The popular discourse on making and makerspaces is laden with optimistic narratives suggesting that makerspaces act as key institutions that support more inclusive and sustainable forms of local economic development. Despite their popularity, we know little about how makerspaces actually support entrepreneurship and innovation and even less about how they advance the goals of environmental sustainability and social inclusion, particularly in the Canadian context. In an effort to redress these gaps, this paper uses a unique database of makerspaces, complemented with findings from in-depth case studies, to examine the practices of makerspaces in southern Ontario (Canada). Our study finds that while makerspaces offer access to technologies and basic skills training, we find limited evidence that makerspaces generate the promised economic or social outcomes so often attributed to them. Moreover, we find very limited evidence that makerspaces actively seek to be socially inclusive in their membership and programming or encourage environmentally sustainable practices. In other words, the potential of makerspaces, in their current form, to contribute to more inclusive and sustainable forms of local economic and community development is not yet fully realized. Making and maker spaces have attracted increasing attention as potential sites for supporting K-12 student learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and as a means of competency development for computational and design thinking as well as technological literacy. While interest in making and maker spaces is high, little empirical research has been conducted that evaluates student learning through making in K-12 classroom spaces. In this study, we address this gap examining student learning through a making project: the construction of e-textiles, in this case, wearable hats, in a unit delivered in both a series of after-school workshops and as in-class lessons in a school in Ontario, Canada. With the introduction of the new two-year Bachelor of Education program across Ontario, our Faculty of Education has introduced a twenty-hour internship. This internship is meant to provide real-world teaching experience for teacher candidates, who are nearing the end of their formal education. By maker pedagogies, we refer to the inquiry-based, student-directed, constructionist approaches to learning typically used in makerspaces. Makerspaces have gained traction in Ontario classrooms, particularly in the last two years. These spaces and their pedagogies facilitate the development of students' global competencies (Hughes, 2017; Somanath et al., 2016). We welcomed eleven teacher candidates (TCs) into our STEAM 3D Maker Lab as part of their internship course for professional development (PD) to provide them with pedagogical experience in a makerspace environment. Our research focused on exploring how the TCs developed a better understanding of maker pedagogies and the associated tools through this PD. As the internship was created and facilitated by an education graduate student in the lab, we extended the research to also investigate this student's development in identifying and understanding some of the best practices associated with making as learning. Through analysis of the TCs' and graduate student's experiences, we identify some best practices in maker-focused professional development for beginning teachers.
