The shift to successful online learning requires online assessment strategies that could facilitate the learning and teaching process and determine the achievement of learning outcomes. This study examined how students' achievement was assessed in an online learning environment during the COVID-19 pandemic and how the College of Education (COE) responded to the shift to online assessment strategies. A mixed-method design using questionnaires and interviews was conducted to collect data from academic staff at COE at Sultan Qaboos University. The study sample consisted of (n=60) academic staff who agreed to answer the research questionnaire. Moreover, the researchers interviewed four academic staff who were experts in online assessment and teachers of practical courses. The interview data were analysed and corroborated with evidence from documents issued by the COE and SQU. The study's findings showed that the academic staff applied various online assessment strategies to measure the learners' achievement. The most applied online assessment strategies were individual projects, presentations, online discussions, and written assignments. The study also found that the COE took measures to enhance its online assessment procedures, including developing an online assessment policy, providing professional development programs, workshops and webinars, and encouraging its staff to conduct further studies to improve online learning practices. Based on the findings, the study suggested some educational implications and recommendations.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are projected to become the largest contributor of clean electricity generation worldwide. Maintenance and cleaning strategies are crucial for optimizing solar PV operations, ensuring a satisfactory economic return of investment. Nanocoating may have potential for optimizing PV operations; however, there is insufficient scientific evidence that supports this idea. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of nanocoating on the performance of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels installed in Al Seeb, Oman. A further study was also carried out to observe the influence of coating layers on the performance of PV panels. One SiO2 nanocoated solar panel, another regularly cleaned PV panel, and a reference uncleaned panel were used to carry out the study. The site of the study was treeless and sandy, with a hot and dry climate. A data logger was connected to the solar PV panel and glass panel to record the resulting voltage, current, temperature, and solar radiation. It was observed that nanocoated PV panels outperformed both regular PV panels and uncleaned PV panels. Nanocoated PV panels demonstrated an average efficiency of 21.6%, showing a 31.7% improvement over uncleaned panels and a 9.6% improvement over regularly cleaned panels. Although nanocoating displayed high efficiency, regular cleaning also contributes positively. Furthermore, even though nanocoated PV panels outperformed the other two panels, it is important to note that the performance difference between the regular cleaned PV panels and the nanocoated PV panels was small. This indicates that regular cleaning strategies and nanocoating can further contribute to maintaining a more efficient solar PV system. Coating in many layers was also observed to influence the performance of PV panels insignificantly, mainly the fourth layer coating appeared to have formed sufficient mass to retain heat. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the accuracy of renal point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) performed by emergency physicians in detecting hydronephrosis in patients with renal colic. Methods: This prospective cross-sectional diagnostic study was conducted at the Emergency Department (ED) of Sultan Qaboos University Hospital from February 2017 to February 2018. All adult patients with suspected renal colic and who could give informed consent were included. The emergency physicians performed POCUS on both kidneys and graded hydronephrosis as none, mild, moderate or severe. The POCUS grade was compared to the non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) grade. Results: A total of 303 participants were enrolled in the analysis. The majority of the study population comprised adult males (247 [81.5%]), and the mean age was 39 years. Among the samples, 71.3% of the patients exhibited a degree of hydronephrosis based on CT findings. Ultrasounds performed by emergency physicians had a sensitivity of 75.8% (95% CI: 69.5-81.4), specificity of 55.2% (95% CI: 44.1-65.8), a positive likelihood ratio of 1.69 (95% CI: 1.32-2.16) and a negative likelihood ratio of 0.43 (95% CI: 0.32-0.59) for hydronephrosis using CT as the criterion standard. Conclusion: When evaluating patients with suspected renal colic, a bedside renal POCUS performed by emergency physicians has a moderate sensitivity to detect hydronephrosis and grade its severity. Purpose: Vertical Farming (VF) is a technique of growing food in vertically stacked layers or vertically inclined surfaces. Theoretically, it has the capability of growing any crops, fruits, or vegetables. The modern techniques of vertical farming through a controlled environment can support the growth and harvest of a crop irrespective of the season and climatic conditions. The newer modern techniques of VF have further reduced the dependency on sunlight, soil, and water. This paper analyses the appropriateness of vertical farming for developing countries like Oman. Design/Methodology/Approach: This paper is based on secondary data and establishes the arguments in favor and against vertical farming. Findings: The findings support the need for vertical farming and suggest that it is very appropriate for the urban setups, where it reduces the transportation cost and facilitates the availability of fresh and pesticide-less food products Research Limitations: The major limitation of this paper is that it only accounts the secondary information, the empirical investigation is missing. Managerial Implications: This paper implies government policies, allied agencies, and the agricultural sector. Originality/Value: This paper is an original paper based on secondary data, providing a conceptual model for Oman, on which very limited studies in the given context is available. Aim: This study is a longitudinal multicenter study which aims to find the prevalence, the demographic data, survival and mortality rates of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in Oman. Method: All Omani patients, pediatrics and adults diagnosed with SLE, who fulfill either the 1997 American College of Rheumatology or Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics classifications criteria for SLE were included from January 2006 till February 2020. Results: In total 1160 patients were included in this cohort. Data analysis showed that patient's ages ranged from 2‐82 years with female predominance and female‐to‐male ratio of 7:1 (87.7% female,12.3% male). The mean prevalence of SLE among different age groups was 38.8 (range 5‐63 per 100 000 inhabitants). The mortality rate was found to be 5%. Male patients had significantly higher mortality rate than females (7.6% vs 5.4%, P value =.04). Sepsis was the commonest cause of mortality (34%). The coexistence of systemic sclerosis correlates significantly with death (P =.002). Survival analysis in our data showed 5, 10, 20, 40‐year survival rates of 100%, 100%, 99% and 90% respectively for antinuclear antibody (ANA) positive patients and lower survival rate for ANA negative patients with 5,10, 20, 40‐year survival rates of 100, 99%, 99% and 75%, respectively. Conclusion: This study showed that the mean prevalence of SLE in Oman to be 38.8 (range 5‐63) per 100 000 inhabitants. The 40‐year survival rate among patients with positive ANA was found to be 90%, while patients with negative ANA had worse survival outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work proposed a business administration strategy for risk management in the activities of universities. Comprising description of actions from recognizing real and potential risks. Data set have been collected and configured to analyze and process several university unites based on a set of criteria that have been developed and tested. The application of the proposed solution will enable the HEI for forecasting and quantitative measurement of risks related to university activities. Aimed at preventing the occurrence of education risks through a clear description of procedures and mechanisms of risk management. The developed university criteria’s could be used as a standard for institutions to evaluate their risk management system. The proposed approach could improve risk management in education institutions by 24%. The real-world innovation of this work involves theoretical and methodological development of conceptual requirements for improving the management processes at universities, based on the application of risk management methods. Objectives: Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has surpassed open surgical repair in the management of blunt traumatic aortic injuries (BTAIs) over the past two decades. It is a less morbid procedure associated with lower mortality. We sought to determine the outcomes of early versus delayed TEVAR of BTAI in our population. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected registry that looked at patients presenting with an image-proven diagnosis of BTAI at three tertiary health care facilities in Muscat, Oman. Forty consecutive patients were identiied between January 2012 and July 2017, of which four were excluded for incomplete data. he remaining 36 patients were divided based on the timing of repair into early (< 7 days) or delayed (≥ 7 days) repair. In both cohorts, variables analyzed included patient demographics, mechanism of injury, injury severity score, need for blood products transfusion, use of anti-impulse medications, anticoagulation, intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and total hospital stay. Primary endpoints included: in-hospital mortality, TEVAR-related morbidity, and the need for reintervention. Results: Our study subjects were young with a mean age of 33.5±14.8 and 29.9±11.0 years in the early and delayed repair cohorts, respectively. Motor vehicle collisions accounted for the majority of cases (82.6% and 76.9% in early and delayed repair, respectively). horacic injuries were the most commonly associated injuries in both early and delayed repair cohorts. Compared to early repair, the delayed repair cohort had a higher incidence of exploratory laparotomies, but the diference was not statistically signiicant (p = 0.161). here were four incidences of cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs) post-TEVAR; three in the early repair cohort and one in the delayed repair cohort (p = 1.000). here was no statistically signiicant correlation between let subclavian total or partial coverage and the incidence of CVA (p = 0.220) and type 1 (p = 0.466) or type 2 endoleak (p = 0.102). he early repair cohort had a longer but not statistically signiicant ICU stay (7.8±6.8 vs. 5.3±10.7, p = 0.386). Prolonged ICU stay was associated with more blood transfusion requirement (p < 0.001), and higher respiratory (p = 0.010) and gastrointestinal complications (p = 0.026). Conclusions: he short-term outcomes for TEVAR of BTAI continue to show its feasibility in managing BTAI in severely injured patients. here was no clear statistical signiicance in mortality and morbidity comparing early versus delayed repair. - We report on the first meteorite search campaign in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The geology and proximity of our search region suggest that it is the north-western extension of the Oman meteorite fields. We found 26 ordinary chondrites, bringing the total number of official meteorites from the UAE to 28. The campaign was organized and conducted in close cooperation with the UAE government and the main masses of the meteorites remained in the country where they will become part of an exhibition. The bulk composition of five meteorite and three soil samples indicates an uptake of U, Mo, Sr, Ba, Li, and Pb from the soil into the meteorites during terrestrial weathering. Terrestrial ages determined from 14C decay of 21 meteorites range from recent falls to 24.4 ka, with two meteorites having >37 ka and approximately 39 ka, respectively. Weak correlations between weathering degree, meteorite bulk chemical composition, and terrestrial age suggest highly localized weathering conditions, possibly related to abundant occurrences of sabkhas in the search region. Abstract: Waste spent catalyst is generated in Oman as a result of the cracking process of petroleum oil in the Mina Al-Fahl and Sohar Refineries. The disposal of spent catalyst is of a major concern to oil refineries. Stabilized spent catalyst was evaluated for use in road construction as a whole replacement for crushed aggregates in the sub-base and base layers and as a partial replacement for Portland cement in masonry blocks manufacturing. Stabilization is necessary as the waste spent catalyst exists in a powder form and binders are needed to attain the necessary strength required to qualify its use in road construction. Raw spent catalyst was also blended with other virgin aggregates, as a sand or filler replacement, for use in road construction. Compaction, unconfined compressive strength and leaching tests were performed on the stabilized mixtures. For its use in masonry construction, blocks were tested for unconfined compressive strength at various curing periods. Results indicate that the spent catalyst has a promising potential for use in road construction and masonry blocks without causing any negative environmental impacts. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Objectives: This research aims to investigate the prevalence, epidemiological characteristics, mortality rates, survival rates and the rate of malignancy in patients diagnosed with inflammatory myopathies (IIM) in Oman., Methods: This is a longitudinal study, that covered a span of 16 years at eight rheumatology centres in Oman. The study included all adults and paediatric patients diagnosed with different types of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) and who fulfil either the Bohan classification criteria or the 2017 EULAR/ACR classification criteria., Results: The study included a total of 116 patient with an average age of 38.78 (±17.61 SD) years. The most prevalent form of myositis was found to be dermatomyositis (DM) 48 (41.38%), followed by polymyositis (PM) 36 (31.03%) and juvenile myositis (JDM) 18(15.52%). However, inclusion body myositis and necrotising myopathy were relatively rare conditions. The prevalence rates for DM, PM and JDM were determined as 2.2, 2.2, and 1.14 per 100,000 population respectively. Cardiac complications were observed in 14.66% of cases. Among the individuals studied, a history of malignancy was present in around 1.72% of cases. ANA antibodies were present in 71.55% of the cases, anti-Jo 1 and anti-RNP/SM antibodies were detected in 8.62%, and Anti-Ro antibodies in 24.14%. The overall mortality rate was found to be 6.90% with a rate of 11.1% among JDM cases. The five-year survival rates for PM, DM and JDM were found to be 94.4%, 91.7% and 89.0% respectively. These rates decline over a 10-year period to 67%, 69% and 83.3% respectively., Conclusions: The study highlights the prevalence, mortality, and survival rates of IIM in Oman. Patients with JDM had a higher mortality rate. This underscores the significance of using novel healthcare strategies to improve clinical outcomes and meet special requirements for this group of patients.
