- Abstract
Ohio's commitment to vocational education is stronger than ever. Vocational education programs in Ohio reflect the fact that not all high school graduates go on to higher education; job training programs offered in Ohio schools provide young people with marketable job skills. To determine these skills, the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) makes a strong effort to communicate with business and industry and make changes in vocational programs. Ohio's vocational education progrms reflect the state's understanding that the nation's economic performance can be enhanced if job training programs are tailored to meet economic needs. To combat the nation's decline in international trade, vocational education will have to emphasize state-of-the-art technologies and emerging skill areas to produce workers technically equal or superior to foreign workers and emphasize the development of good work attitudes to produce American workers psychologically prepared to meet the highest standards of productivity. Throughout 1986 the ODE will pursue such state-level objectives as meeting vocational education needs of special populations, implementing a statewide core competency testing program, and creating a vocational education leadership academy.
