Irvin H. Blank is one of the earliest non-clinician-scientists who became interested in the skin and produced much knowledge which has important clinical bearing. He came by this interest in the skin along a complicated route. He was trained as a bacteriologist and biochemist working in the leather industry between 1924 and 1931. He was a research associate in the Department of Leather Research, Institute of Scientific Research, University of Cincinnati, Ohio. He has contributed to the knowledge of cutaneous penetration, of epidermal barrier function in health and disease and cutaneous pH control.
