This article is an edited summary of a panel discussion that took place at the 2003 Symposium on Stakeholder Democracy held by the International Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility at Nottingham University in November 2003, from which the preceding five articles emanate. The two main aims of this article are to delineate disciplinary perspectives on stakeholder democracy and to evaluate the prospects for a multi-or inter-disciplinary view on the concept. The discussion reveals that different disciplines can accommodate ideas of stakeholder democracy and can provide specific insights into its meaning and practical relevance. However, the introduction of the concept largely remains partial and contested across the disciplines. Multi-disciplinarity is presented as offering considerable potential for further theoretical and practical development in stakeholder democracy, but the panellists raised important considerations around the conditions under which disciplinary borders should be crossed in advancing such knowledge.
