Purpose: This study aimed to develop knowledge of how the follow-up regarding overweight and obesity among children in primary school is experienced by the PHN and how the guidelines may be used to improve health services in this follow-up. Methods: We analysed semi-structured interviews of 9 PHNs using qualitative content analysis. Results: Two themes emerged: Following up with children with overweight and obesity is an important but challenging duty; The PHNs call for clearer guidelines. Following five sub-themes: PHNs strive to adhere to the guidelines, show compassion in the follow-up, have difficulty handling parents' feelings and reactions, feel alone with the responsibility, and have suggestions for clearer guidelines. Conclusions: PHNs call for enough resources to communicate the results of the child's weight in a sufficient form. PHNs and families should establish common goals. The PHN should avoid one-way communication but meet the parents' concerns and needs. This requires the PHN to focus on building a secure relation to the child and the families, as described by Peplau. Guidelines must include instructions and tools on how to communicate and meet the family's concerns. Political action and increased funding could strengthen the follow-up and thereby prevent more obesity among children, which can be a predictor of poorer health outcomes later in life. Background: Mental health problems among adolescents is a global challenge. During the transition to adolescence, physiological, psychological, and social changes occur, leading to increased vulnerability. Thus, adolescent boys are less likely to seek help for mental health problems, which makes them an undetected group. The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of adolescent boys' experiences of mental health and school health service. Methods: An inductive, qualitative design was chosen using three focus group interviews and three individual interviews. The study included 18 adolescent boys in 7th grade, in a school located in a medium-sized municipality in Norway. The interviews were analysed with qualitative content analysis. The consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) were followed in this study. Results: The overall theme "barriers towards seeking help", and three categories— navigating stigma and privacy concerns; perceptions of self-responsibility; and lacking knowledge of mental health problems and help-seeking—described the adolescent boys experiences. The awareness and willingness to seek help were present, but there are barriers preventing the adolescent boys from acting on that willingness. Conclusions: Lack of knowledge and a non-permissive culture for mental health problems among adolescents contributes to decreased help-seeking behaviour among adolescent boys. The school health service is the most related health service for adolescents and should focus on being available and strengthening empowerment and mental health literacy through the development and implementation of interventions to promote mental health. Background: Previous research indicates a link between what nurses receive for themselves and their remaining in practice. In Norway, school nurses tend to remain in practice, but what it is they receive for themselves has been scarcely studied. The aim of this study, therefore, was to describe and interpret what it is school nurses receive for themselves that influences their remaining in practice. Method: The study has a qualitative design with a hermeneutic approach. Data were collected through individual interviews on two separate occasions with 15 Norwegian school nurses. The data were analysed using a phenomenological hermeneutic method. Results: Two themes demonstrate what it is the school nurses receive for themselves: (1) 'Gaining interesting workdays for yourself' and (2) 'Attaining pleasure for yourself'. Each theme has two sub-themes. The first theme involved the school nurses 'having an attractive scope of practice' and 'having varied tasks'. The second theme involved 'being trusted' and 'being given a response'. The study themes can be comprehensively understood as an expression of what the school nurses identify as the main locus of the good work-life. The school nurses' remaining seems to revolve around what it is they receive on their own behalf: an affirmation for their ordinary life and what they do as a nurse. Conclusion: This study highlights that what school nurses receive on their own behalf may influence their remaining in practice. It adds to previous research with a more specific understanding of nurses remaining in practice by stating that in identifying the main locus of the good work-life, the school nurses received affirmation for their ordinary life and what they do as a nurse. Thus, it is important that nurses identify the main locus of a good work-life for themselves, as receiving affirmation for what they do in their ordinary workdays may influence their remaining in practice. Registration of clinical trial and registration identification number: The study was approved by the Norwegian Centre for Research Data (project 59195). Aim: This study aims to describe and interpret what it is school nurses strive to achieve for themselves in order to remain in practice. Design: A qualitative study with a hermeneutic approach. Method: The data were collected by means of in‐depth interviews with 15 Norwegian school nurses on two separate occasions and analysed using a phenomenological hermeneutic method. Results: The analysis resulted in the following themes: (1) trusting your own professional ability, (2) aspiring to appreciation and (3) accomplishing self‐care. These themes were reflected in the school nurses' choices and actions and were regarded as an expression of what was of value to them as a nurse. Thus, the nurses' realizing what they strived to achieve for themselves can comprehensively be understood as a good of higher value for their remaining in nursing practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study explored experiences Norwegian public health nurses (PHNs) have with using interventions from the Public Health Intervention Wheel (PHIW). Design and Sample: The researchers used both quantitative and qualitative measures to explore how Norwegian PHNs use PHIW interventions in their practice. Data were gathered from six focus group meetings with 15 school and 16 family health nurses in Norway. Method: Instruments included: (a) demographic data form, (b) the Public Health Intervention Questionnaire developed by the researchers, and (c) focus group questions. Results: Following discussion of PHIW interventions in focus groups, PHNs reported they had a clearer understanding of each intervention and they had performed activities in their practice consistent with each of the Wheel interventions. Conclusion: Descriptions of the Wheel interventions provided the PHNs with the terminology and language to identify and explain their work in public health nursing practice. Although there are some differences between the United States and Norway in the structure of public health nursing practice, the PHIW is a framework that is applicable to the work of PHNs in Norway. Scand J Caring Sci; 2010; 24; 791-798 Bullying may have a number of negative health impacts on children. Previous studies have mainly explored negative health consequences related to being bullied. A different approach is to explore how these phenomena are related to the school child's quality of life (QOL). The role of the school nurse is to promote health and prevent sickness, and school nurses therefore need knowledge of what promotes or threatens QOL in children. No previous research has explored how bullied children envisage their dream day or a day with good QOL. There is a need for more qualitative research on how school children experience being bullied and the kind of help they need from their school, and school nurse, to realize their dream day. The aim of this study was to explore how school children experience bullying in their everyday lives, what constitutes their dream day and what kind of help they need. An explorative qualitative design was chosen, and data were collected through focus group interviews. Data collection was conducted throughout 2007 and during the spring of 2008. The sample consisted of 17 school children, aged 12-13 years, in four different groups. An interview guide was used, and the group responses were audio-taped, transcribed and coded into themes. The data were analysed according to Kvale's three contexts of interpretation within a phenomenological and hermeneutic framework. Four main themes were identified: teasing and fighting, emotional reactions to being left alone or excluded, the need for friends to achieve the dream day and stopping the bullying immediately. The participants said that being bullied made them feel helpless, lonely and excluded. They wanted the bullying to be recognized, assistance from the school staff to stop the bullying, and to be included by their peers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
