This article contributes to the sociology of education and technology by providing a cultural analysis of scepticism towards new technologies in school, using reactions to the telepresence robot 'AV1' as its case. AV1 is designed to connect 'homebound' students with their 'school-based' teachers and classmates. Despite its idealistic purpose, the robot has been met with significant scepticism by Norwegian school workers. To understand why, the article proposes the novel concepts of 'educational purity' and 'technological danger' to highlight the shared beliefs that underlie school workers' concerns. We find that school workers see AV1 as threatening key ideals of schools being pedagogically oriented, physically copresent and bounded institutions -- all concerns that reflect widespread ideas about how technologies tend to (not) function within educational contexts. In highlighting these symbolic tensions between new technologies and schools, the article sets a course for future studies into the cultural sociology of education and technology.

'Homebound' children are unable to attend school for illness-related reasons. To lessen their predicament, schools have begun experimenting with 'telepresence robots' that can enable remote participation. While promising, we know little about the use of telepresence robots in practice. To begin to redress this, we draw on 159 semi-structured interviews to explore the experiences of 37 child users of the robot 'AV1' in Norwegian schools. The children's experiences varied, with some benefitting greatly and others not getting any benefit from using the robot. To explain these variations, we reconstruct the robot's "critical component structure" -- that is, the assembly of sociomaterial elements that determines whether and how the robot works in practice. We also explore the benefits of using the robot when these critical components align. In so doing, we provide in-depth knowledge about the potential and prerequisites of using telepresence robots in schools -- to the benefit of users, producers and scholars of telepresence technology.

Internalizing problems may be associated with poor academic performance and school absenteeism among youth. This study investigated the impact of the EMOTION: "Coping Kids" Managing Anxiety and Depression Program on academic achievement and school adaptation in children. Data were collected in a national cluster-randomized controlled trial at three time points in Norway. Children (N = 688, 8-12 years), who had elevated levels of anxiety or depressive symptoms from 36 schools participated. There were no significant differences between the intervention and control groups post-intervention or at 12-month follow-up regarding academic achievement and school adaptation. Likewise, no significant intervention effects were identified for school-related variables in the anxiety-only, depression-only, or combined (anxiety and depression) groups. The intervention did not have an impact on school functioning. Thus, focusing on school-related challenges and enhanced collaboration with teachers, possibly through a tailored version of the EMOTION program, could be an interesting adaptation of the intervention.

The aim of this article is to review the psychometric properties of the psychological tests that are being used in the Nordic countries during pregnancy and the child's first two years of life. A systematic literature search was performed for 33 identified tests routinely used in health care, using specific review databases as well as PsycInfo, Embase and Medline. The trained authors conducted an overall assessment of quality for each test which was then verified by the editors. A total of 12% of the tests were rated at Level 1 'Low level of quality', 61% at Level 2 'Some evidence of Quality', 15% at level 3 'Good level of Quality' and 12% at Level 4 'High level of quality'. This indicates that the evidence for the psychometric properties is insufficient for many tests used in the Nordic countries for this purpose

Analysing the interaction between classroom dialogue and digital technology is challenging. Studies in this area typically draw on methods developed for the analysis of spoken interactions. This article reports on a new approach for analysing the enacted affordances of digital technology in classroom dialogue. Using examples from cross-country research investigating the Talkwall microblogging platform, involving 20 teachers and over 400 learners aged 11-13 in England and Norway, it outlines a rigorous process for data categorization -- and subsequent inductive and deductive analysis -- that enables holistic and multi-levelled examinations of the role of technology in supporting dialogue. This framework features three cyclical phases for the analysis of teacher -- and student-student interactions: (i) categorizing and organizing complex classroom data; (ii) coding spoken dialogue; (iii) analysing enacted affordances. The significance of this work lies in examining underpinning theory and illustrating a systematic new methodological approach to analysing learning and teaching in classrooms featuring dialogue and technology. This extends traditional notions of the affordances of digital technology by better taking into account the manner in which these are enacted in dialogic classrooms. Critical reflections, exemplifications and recommendations are provided.

Educational activities using microblogging co-located with face-to-face communication might promote productive classroom interactions. However, much depends on how teachers design those activities. This article explores how the educational design of an activity that uses microblogging engages lower secondary school students in classroom interactions that are productive for learning. It presents a study of one teacher's educational design in which students (aged 12-13) in a Norwegian classroom use microblogging to explore distinctions between facts and opinions. Moreover, the authors consider how the students pick up on the educational design. The findings show that an educational design involving microblogging can provide new possibilities to facilitate peer interactions by systematically enabling students to access more of their peers' ideas, produce and discuss collective ideas and participate in exploratory talk. In particular, the use of hashtags proves suitable for facilitating peer interactions with the aim to develop students' critical thinking.

Arts education are understood and implemented by ways of different discourses. Following critical discourse theory, discourses are part of power strategies and they predominantly fight for dominance. What this means is that certain discourses and accompanying practices of arts education may rule and others may be subordinated or neglected. A review of current Norwegian publicly funded arrangements on arts and education shows competing discourses, which seem subordinate to a dominant Eurocentric arts institutional discourse. The general use of high art "quality" as a nodal point in most arrangements supports the argument. Through contemporary practices of social circus outside Europe, such as "Circus du Monde", and by an exemplar project, The Circus Lab, a collaboration between Norway and Portugal, a different discourse of cultural democracy and education (formation) is seen and expressed. This discourse seems to be less visible in the European context of publicly funded arrangements, where professional training, exposition to the cultural canons and audience participation still seem to monitor the comprehension and act as discursive triggers by which policies are governed. Among the consequences are lost opportunities of collaborative practices between the competent adult and the competent child.

While the number of studies of flipped classrooms has increased, they have primarily addressed the efficacy of using such an approach on student outcomes, often failing to account for the classroom activities and learning theories used to design the curriculum. This study begins to fill this gap in the literature by uniting the at-home video and in-class curricular components of the flipped classroom via design heuristics that empower students to critically think about mathematical problems individually before engaging with the task in a collective environment. To that end, we illustrate how elements of the instructional design theory of Realistic Mathematics Education and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy influenced the written and hidden curriculum and how those considerations were then experienced by the students as part of the enacted components of the curriculum. The context of the study is a 2-week classroom teaching experiment covering topics in trigonometry and vectors for 27 calculus students at a Norwegian university.

Research on implementation of school-based transdiagnostic interventions, conducted by personnel from the municipal services is limited. We investigated facilitators and barriers regarding implementation of EMOTION, an intervention targeting symptoms of anxiety and depression in children 8-12 years. Trained health- and childcare professionals completed one questionnaire before (N = 63) and a separate questionnaire after running an EMOTION group (N = 66). Twelve of the group leaders were interviewed to provide additional information regarding implementation. Results indicated that factors such as a perceived need for the intervention and positive attitudes from the group leaders facilitated implementation. Hindering factors were related to time constraints, workload, unsupportive leaders, and lack of cooperation from the schools. Allocating resources to implementation specifically could promote future use of the program.

This qualitative case study of emergent practices in a multi-paradigmatic field at one department in Norway explores how performance metrics in science intra-act with staff composition and resource allocation, potentially affecting paradigm trends. Inspired by agential realism, we discuss four key metrics as the material core of an assemblage through which Academe is iteratively enacted. Separately, together, and in concert with other metrics and practices, these play major roles in steering disciplinary development. Our empirical material consists of official documents, bibliometric outputs, and auto-ethnographic observations. Metrics and the practices and institutions they measure are iteratively co-emergent. Responses to the assemblage include hyper-cooperation, cooptation, and resistance. Effects are not uniform and may add to discrimination according to field and position status. Emphasis on international publication may also lead to increasing distance between social sciences and the local society they are entrusted to study. Recently, we and other colleagues have become concerned that performance metrics may also be contributing to paradigm bias in hiring procedures.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and natural history of POLG disease in the Norwegian population. Methods: A national, population‐based, retrospective study using demographic, clinical, and genetic data of patients with genetically confirmed POLG disease. The patients were diagnosed between 2002 and 2022, and were included into the Norwegian POLG Patient Registry. Patients were stratified according to age at disease onset (early <12 years, juvenile to adult 12–40 years, late ≥40 years) and resident region. Results: Ninety‐one patients were included. The point prevalence of POLG disease was 1:149,253. Birth prevalence was 1:48,780. Median age at clinical onset was 16 years (range: 2 months to 70 years). Onset occurred early in 35% (32 out of 91), juvenile‐adult in 55% (50 out of 91) and late in 10% (9 out of 91). A distinct seasonal pattern in disease onset was observed, with 57% (52 out of 91) presenting between May and August. Forty‐five patients (49%) had acute exacerbations that required intensive care, and this affected 72% of those in the early‐onset group. The mortality rate was 54% (49 out of 91), with a median time from disease onset to death of 3 years (range: 1 month to 36 years). Interpretation: We provide the point prevalence and birth prevalence of POLG disease in the first nationwide study in which epidemiological and clinical data were integrated. Seasonal variations in clinical onset may offer valuable insights into disease mechanisms and modifying factors. The Nordic countries are often perceived as a coherent group representing the Nordic model of welfare states, with a strong emphasis on the public provision of universal welfare and a strong concern with social equality. But today we see a change in the Nordic model as part of a global knowledge economy. The aim of this article is to examine education in the five Nordic countries utilising three dimensions of political change: deregulation, marketisation and privatisation. We also analyse the parallel changes in relation to segregation and differentiation in education. The analysis shows that the themes related to deregulation seem to show fairly similar patterns and structures in all contexts. The emerging differences were discovered mainly in the themes of marketisation and privatisation. Institutional segregation emerges in all Nordic countries to different extents along the lines of these three processes, and we observe a simultaneous social segregation and differentiation with an ambiguous connection to them. Based on these findings, the question of what is left of the "Nordic model" could be raised.

The 8200-year BP cooling event is reconstructed in part from sediments in the Norwegian and North Seas. Here we show that these sediments have been reworked by the Storegga tsunami – dated to the coldest decades of the 8.2 ka event. We simulate the maximum tsunami flow velocity to be 2–5 m/s on the shelf offshore western Norway and in the shallower North Sea, and up to about 1 m/s down to a water depth of 1000 m. We re-investigate sediment core MD95-2011 and found the cold-water foraminifera in the 8.2 ka layer to be re-deposited and 11,000 years of age. Oxygen isotopes of the recycled foraminifera might have led to an interpretation of a too large and dramatic climate cooling. Our simulations imply that large parts of the sea floor in the Norwegian and North Seas probably were reworked by currents during the Storegga tsunami. Tsunamis can disturb sea floor sediments. This study shows that climate records of the famous 8200-year-old cold spell inferred from Norwegian Sea sediments are likely contaminated by tsunami waves from the giant Storegga Landslide. Unhealthy aging poses a global challenge with profound healthcare and socioeconomic implications. Slowing down the aging process offers a promising approach to reduce the burden of a number of age-related diseases, such as dementia, and promoting healthy longevity in the old population. In response to the challenge of the aging population and with a view to the future, Norway and the United Kingdom are fostering collaborations, supported by a "Money Follows Cooperation agreement" between the 2 nations. The inaugural Norway–UK joint meeting on aging and dementia gathered leading experts on aging and dementia from the 2 nations to share their latest discoveries in related fields. Since aging is an international challenge, and to foster collaborations, we also invited leading scholars from 11 additional countries to join this event. This report provides a summary of the conference, highlighting recent progress on molecular aging mechanisms, genetic risk factors, DNA damage and repair, mitophagy, autophagy, as well as progress on a series of clinical trials (eg, using NAD+ precursors). The meeting facilitated dialogue among policymakers, administrative leaders, researchers, and clinical experts, aiming to promote international research collaborations and to translate findings into clinical applications and interventions to advance healthy aging. Background: There is a paucity of data on whether parents' macrosomia (birthweight ≥4500 g) status influences the risk of macrosomia in the offspring. The role of maternal overweight in the generational effect of macrosomia is not known. Objective: To estimate the risk of macrosomia by parental birthweight at term and evaluate if this risk varied with maternal body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) early in pregnancy. Methods: We used data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway on all singleton term births (37–42 gestational weeks) during 1967–2017. The primary exposure was parental macrosomia, and the outcome was macrosomia in the second generation. The secondary exposure was maternal BMI. We used binomial regression to calculate relative risk (RR) with a 95% confidence interval. We assessed potential unmeasured confounding and selection bias using a probabilistic bias analysis and performed analyses with and without imputation for variables with missing values. Results: The data included 647,957 singleton parent‐offspring trios born at term. The prevalence of macrosomia was 3.2% (n = 41,396) in the parental generation and 4.0% (n = 25,673) in the offspring generation. Macrosomia in parents was associated with an increased risk of macrosomia in offspring, with the RR for both parents were born macrosomic being 6.53 (95% confidence interval [CI] 5.31, 8.05), only mother macrosomic 3.37 (95% CI 3.17, 3.57) and only father macrosomic RR 2.22 (95% CI 2.12, 2.33). These risks increased by maternal BMI in early pregnancy: if both parents were born macrosomic, 17% of infants were macrosomic among mothers with normal BMI. If both parents were macrosomic and the mothers were obese, 31% of offspring were macrosomic. Macrosomia‐related adverse outcomes did not differ with parental macrosomia status. Conclusions: Parents' weight at birth and maternal BMI appear to be strongly associated with macrosomia in the offspring delivered at term gestations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, leisure was reserved for the few. By the end of the twentieth century, however, most workers had a regulated normal working time of 40 or fewer hours per week, annual paid leave, and overtime compensation. In this paper, I investigate which political parties brought forth these changes – which party constellations supported or opposed working-time reforms and argue that sector and class differences drive party preferences. Lower-class and urban middle-class workers demanded regulation as demand for leisure increased with income. In contrast, employers and farmers opposed such reforms. Accordingly, the study argues that socialist and social-liberal parties were inclined to support leisure-securing working-time reforms, whereas conservative and farmer parties opposed them. Due to their linkages with workers and farmers, liberal parties may be divided into a rural constituency that tends to oppose working-time reforms and an urban constituency that supports them. I test these expectations using parliamentary data: 65 roll-call votes from Norway between 1880 and 1940, combined with analysis of major reforms and legislative appeals. Finally, I undertake a generalization test using country-level reform data from 33 democracies between 1880 and 2010. The Social Skills Improvement System-Rating Scales (SSIS-RS) is a multi-informant instrument assessing social skills and problem behavior in children and adolescents. It is a revised version of the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS). A Norwegian translation of the SSRS has been validated, but this has not yet been done for the Norwegian translation of the SSIS-RS. This study compared the Norwegian versions of the SSRS and the SSIS-RS administered to samples of children (aged 8-12 and 13-16 years) and their parents and teachers (n = 599). The results indicated moderate to strong relations between the common subscales across all forms of the two instruments and acceptable to excellent internal consistency across all common subscales. We conclude that the SSIS-RS is a good instrument for measuring social skills and problem behavior among children and adolescents in Norway.

This study examined the characteristics of adults with autism spectrum disorder who have undergone a forensic examination and explored any relationships between the diagnosis and the offence. The reports described 41 men and 7 women. The autism spectrum disorder was diagnosed late (mean age: 25.3?years), and 22 of the 48 cases were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder for the first time by the forensic experts. The education level and employment status were low. Family networks were close, but social networks outside the family were limited. Co-morbid diagnoses were common, and more than half of the group knew their victims. The examined individuals constitute a vulnerable and heterogeneous group, as do offenders within other diagnostic categories. Unlike most others who commit criminal acts, the majority of the individuals with autism spectrum disorder in this study showed no evidence of substance abuse, had a close relationship to their victims and were willing to confess to the accused crime. No clear association between the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder and the criminal act were identified, but in most cases, autism spectrum disorder characteristics, such as idiosyncratic comprehensions and obsessions appeared to be related to the motive for the offence.

The article looks into the consequences for recruitment of Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development's recommendations that universities should manage their resources strategically to foster excellence. Using institutional ethnography as described by Dorothy Smith in a sociology department in Norway, it shows how strategic recruiting for excellence resulted in nominating candidates who were not able to teach the sociology program. Operationalizing potential for excellence as the number of (international) publications in the last 5 years resulted in nominating candidates with narrow fields of expertise who had been offered favorable conditions to publish internationally. When academic quality is translated into the number of international publications in the last 5 years, it undermines the policy of gender equity in academia by ruling out women who use paid parental leave to have children during their PhD period. The focus on publications in English also threatens to marginalize sociology's contribution to public debate and national policy.

This article analyses the perceived impact of international migration on host rural communities from the perspectives of local stakeholders. Based on in‐depth interviews conducted in two rural locales in Norway, we identify a consensus about the indispensability of international labour migrants for the demographic and economic sustenance of the host rural communities. At the same time, the perspectives of stakeholders convey a complex picture of labour migration. The perceived impact of international migration is related to the tempo of migration and to the prior local history of migration that affects how it is represented and handled locally. Depending on the context, international migration may be treated as a common‐place phenomenon or as a force that profoundly affects the conception of the local community. Our findings illustrate a socio‐spatial variation of responses to international migration locally and suggest the emergence of new local social divisions along the growing superdiversity of rural communities. The objective of the study was to compare the use of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication among children and adolescents in Scandinavia 2010–2020. Using aggregated prescription data for individuals aged 5–19 years, we calculated annual prevalence proportions of ADHD medication (users/1000 inhabitants) for each country, overall and stratified by age and sex. Overall, use of ADHD medication increased during 2010–2020 in all countries. The increase was pronounced in Sweden reaching 35 users/1000 inhabitants in 2020 (119% increase), whereas it reached 22/1000 in Denmark and Norway (equivalent to a 38% and 16% increase, respectively). Methylphenidate was the most frequently used drug and Sweden had the highest use reaching 25/1000 in 2020 compared to 16/1000 and 18/1000 in Denmark and Norway, respectively. Lisdexamfetamine use increased steadily and was also highest in Sweden (13/1000 in 2020). In 2020, atomoxetine use was higher in Sweden (4.6/1000) and Denmark (4.5/1000) compared to Norway (2.2/1000). From 2015, use of guanfacine increased in Sweden reaching 4.4/1000 in 2020 but remained low in Denmark (0.4/1000) and Norway (0.7/1000). Use of dexamphetamine was low (ranging from 0.47 to 0.75/1000 in 2020) in the three countries. ADHD medication use was highest in Sweden across all age groups. In all countries, the prevalence was higher in males compared to females. In conclusion, use of ADHD medication among children and adolescents in Scandinavia is increasing. Introduction: Persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) are common after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). There is a need to explore contributing factors to exacerbation of symptoms during physical activity, exercise intol- erance, in adult population with PPCS to provide effective rehabilitation Objective: Explore differences in demographic, injury-related, psychological, and physical functioning factors in patients with and without exercise intolerance tested on the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test (BCTT). Explore if these factors are associated with PPCS-burden in patients with exercise intolerance. Study design: Cross-sectional study of the baseline population in a randomized controlled trial: ClinicalTrials. gov:NCT05086419 Methods: Study population: 103 patients (57% female, mean age 37 years, SD:11) with mTBI and self-reported exercise intolerance recruited from the TBI outpatient clinic, Oslo University Hospital. Type of assessments: Exercise intolerance measured by BCTT (% of HRmax). Dependent variable: Rivermead Post- concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ). Independent variables: age, sex, days since injury, exercise intolerance, depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7), fatigue (FSS), physical activity level (IPAQ). Results: Among the 103 patients, 81 (79%) tested exercise intolerant on the BCTT. The exercise intolerant group was younger (35.8 years, sd:10.6 vs. 41.4, sd:10.2, p=.029), had more co-morbidities (proportion: 69% vs 50%, p=0.09) and had shorter time since injury (days: 212 sd:113 vs. 288 sd:123, p=.013). All test parameters for the BCTT were significantly poorer for the exercise intolerant group. Headache (59%) and dizziness (36%) were the most frequently reported symptoms during BCTT. A multiple regression analysis with backward selection showed that female sex (b=3.49), days-since-injury (b=0.015), GAD-7 (b=0.58) and PHQ-9 (b=1.04) were significantly associated (p<.05) with higher PPCS-burden on the RPQ (adjR2= .46, p<.001), whereas exercise intolerance was not. Conclusions: Exercise intolerance was confirmed with BCTT for the majority of mTBI patients with self-reported exercise intolerance. Anxiety and depression was the strongest factors explaining PPCS-burden in patients with exercise intolerance after mTBI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to evaluate the global functional outcomes after moderate-to-severe traumatic injury at 6 and 12 months and to examine the sociodemographic and injury-related factors that predict these outcomes. A prospective cohort study was conducted in which trauma patients of all ages with a New Injury Severity Score > 9 who were discharged alive from two regional trauma centres in Norway over a one-year period (2020) were included. The Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended (GOSE) score was used to analyse the functional outcomes. Regression analyses were performed to investigate the predictors of the GOSE score. Follow-up assessments were obtained from approximately 85% of the 601 included patients at both time points. The mean (SD) GOSE score was 6.1 (1.6) at 6 months and 6.4 (1.6) at 12 months, which corresponds to an upper-moderate disability. One-half of the patients had a persistent disability at 12 months post-injury. The statistically significant predictors of a low GOSE score at both time points were more pre-injury comorbidity, a higher number of injuries, and higher estimated rehabilitation needs, whereas a thorax injury with an Abbreviated Injury Scale ≥ 3 predicted higher GOSE scores. A high Glasgow Coma Scale score at admission predicted a higher GOSE score at 6 months. This study strengthens the evidence base for the functional outcomes and predictors in this population. Cognitive and behavioural problems may be predominant in the clinical picture of myotonic dystrophy (DM1) in childhood. This can lead to a diagnostic delay and thus prevent optimal therapeutic measures. To obtain an overview of children with DM1 in our health region and study their cognitive and behavioural function, quality of life and neurological status. Patients diagnosed with DM1 were recruited to this cross-sectional study through local habilitation teams of our health region. Neuropsychological testing and physical examination were performed for the majority. For some patients information was retrieved from medical records and through telephone interviews. A questionnaire was administered regarding quality of life. 27 subjects <18 years diagnosed with DM1 were identified, giving a frequency of DM1 of 4.3/100 000 in this age group. Twenty consented to participate. Five had congenital DM1. Most of the participants had only mild neurological deficits. Two with congenital type had hydrocephalus requiring a shunt. Ten, whereof none with congenital DM1, had a cognitive function within normal range. Three were diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, and additional three were reported with autistic traits. Many parents reported social and school problems for their child. Intellectual disability and varying degrees of autistic behaviour were quite common. Motor deficits were most often mild. A strong focus regarding support at school and in social communication is needed for children growing up with DM1. • Prevalence of DM1 below the age of 18 was 4.3 per 100 000. • Most of the non-congenital DM1 had cognitive function within normal range. • Social and school problems were common according to parents. • Autistic spectrum disorder or autistic traits were reported in close to one third. This article analyses how library, archive and museum professionals legitimize the use of scarce societal resources for maintaining their respective organizations, with a special emphasis on their role as public-sphere infrastructure. Drawing on data from a survey among professionals in libraries, archives and museums in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, the authors investigate whether professionals across these institutions have similar expectations of their organizations to serve as public spheres. The analysis is contextualized with references to current library, archive and museum legislation across the three countries. The authors conclude that there are many similarities across the three countries, although national library, archive and museum legislation differs. The cross-national measurement invariance of the teacher and classmate support scale was assessed in a study of 23202 Grade 8 and 10 students from Austria, Canada, England, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, and Slovenia, participating in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) 2001/2002 study. A multi-group means and covariance analysis supported configural and metric invariance across countries, but not full scalar equivalence. The composite reliability was adequate and highly consistent across countries. In all seven countries, teacher support showed stronger associations with school satisfaction than did classmate support, with the results being highly consistent across countries. The results indicate that the teacher and classmate support scale may be used in cross-cultural studies that focus on relationships between teacher and classmate support and other constructs. However, the lack of scalar equivalence indicates that direct comparison of the levels support across countries might not be warranted. (Contains 7 tables.)

Too often ethical boards delay or stop research projects with vulnerable populations, influenced by presumed rather than empirically documented vulnerability. The article investigates how participation is experienced by those bereaved by suicide. Experiences are divided into 3 groups: (a) overall positive (62%), (b) unproblematic (10%), and (c) positive and painful (28%). The positive experiences are linked to processes of meaning-making, gaining new insight, and a hope to help others. Objective factors concerning the gender of participants, their relationship to the deceased, the method of suicide, and time since loss were largely unrelated to their experience of the interview.

When we speak of quality in drama education, we apply different educational and aesthetic criteria. For example, improvised drama practices such as process drama, are closely associated to John Dewey's constructivist philosophy. What makes a drama qualitatively "good" within such a framework differs radically from criteria that are familiar in conflicting philosophies, such as empiricist epistemology and classicist aesthetics. Dewey offers a cultural theory that does not separate knowing in arts from knowing in education. This implies a link between constructivist epistemology and a corresponding aesthetic theory, which produces a specific set of qualitative criteria. By reporting from a case of drama teaching and research, I examine how constructivist thinking affects the aesthetic, education and research in ways of structure and approach, design and aims. Experiential forms of drama are valued as potential models for constructivist education and a corresponding aesthetics. From the perspective of the agent, the aesthetic experience results from an interactive media process, and this is also educational.

Objective: To analyze sex differences among adult, never-treated patients referred for central stimulant treatment of ADHD. Method: Data for 600 consecutive patients from northern Norway referred for evaluation by an expert team during 7 years were analyzed. General background information, diagnostic and social history, and symptom profiles were compared between previously never-treated men and women. Results: The sex ratio was skewed. Of the previously untreated patients, more than 20% fell outside society's ordinary vocational activities or social benefit system. Most patients had the combined form, one third the inattentive type, and only 2% the hyperactive/impulsive subtype. Abuse and criminality were more common among men, and affective, eating, and somatization disorders were more common among women. Otherwise few sex differences were found. Conclusion: AD/HD symptom intensity and subtypes did not differ between the sexes and was unrelated to age. Symptom intensity was linked with criminality, abuse, and other psychiatric problems, differentially for the two sexes. (Contains 5 tables.)

This article discusses how to analyze educational reforms in which information and communications technology (ICT) is used as a central catalyst to change practises. We explore the relationship between theoretical conceptualizations and empirical findings drawing on the work of Larry Cuban and Yrjo Engestrom. We claim that reform research has traditionally been too preoccupied with looking for the intended changes. One problem with this "top-down" approach is that it conceals changes that happen at the microlevel. As a result, we are left with little understanding of how educational practises change in relation to ICT reform interventions at the interactional level. As an illustrative case, we draw on the analysis of a reform program that focused on the use of ICT in teacher education and show how this reform took place and examine what was interactionally accomplished across the institutions that took part. Background: The objective of the study was to calculate the prevalence of inmates with intellectual disabilities (ID), and identify historical, medical and criminological characteristics of a certain impact. Methods: A random sample of 143 inmates from a Norwegian prison cross sectional sample was studied. The Hayes Ability Screening Index (HASI) was validated with the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI). Results: The prevalence of inmates with ID, IQ less than 70, was 10.8%. Some essential characteristics of inmates with ID were more frequent medication for mental disorders, a higher number of imprisonments, less drug abuse and less education than the other inmates. The results indicated that the HASI is a valid tool for screening of ID for the Norwegian inmates. Conclusions: The prevalence of ID in Norwegian inmates is significant, measured by WASI and HASI. Identification, rehabilitation and care, concerning an intellectual handicap, are mostly absent in the Norwegian criminal justice system.

Using Vygotsky's notion of double stimulation as an analytical tool, we discuss the complex relationship between tasks, tools, and agency in CSCL environments. Empirically we examine how learners in a Norwegian senior high school class learning English as a foreign language approach and respond to an open-ended and collectively oriented task using a wiki. Our findings show that collectively oriented knowledge and language production takes place locally in small groups as well as in the larger collective of the class, and that learners find it difficult to maintain awareness of both levels of activity. However, when facing a breakdown in the wiki application, learners sustained strategies that carried many of the characteristics of collective production. We argue that there is a need to further theorize the task-tool relationship in activities involving collective knowledge production and that we need to align pedagogical as well as technological designs in order to give support for such efforts.

Background: Previous studies have demonstrated that the trauma population has needs for rehabilitation services that are best provided in a continuous and coordinated way. The discharge destination after acute care is the second step to ensuring quality of care. There is a lack of knowledge regarding the factors associated with the discharge destination for the overall trauma population. This paper aims to identify sociodemographic, geographical, and injury-related factors associated with discharge destination following acute care at trauma centers for patients with moderate-to-severe traumatic injuries. Methods: A multicenter, population-based, prospective study was conducted with patients of all ages with traumatic injury [New Injury Severity Score (NISS) > 9] admitted within 72 h after the injury to regional trauma centers in southeastern and northern Norway over a 1-year period (2020). Results: In total, 601 patients were included; a majority (76%) sustained severe injuries, and 22% were discharged directly to specialized rehabilitation. Children were primarily discharged home, and most of the patients ≥ 65 years to their local hospital. Depending on the centrality of their residence [Norwegian Centrality Index (NCI) 1–6, where 1 is most central], we found that patients residing in NCI 3–4 and 5–6 areas sustained more severe injuries than patients residing in NCI 1–2 areas. An increase in the NISS, number of injuries, or a spinal injury with an Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) ≥ 3 was associated with discharge to local hospitals and specialized rehabilitation than to home. Patients with an AIS ≥ 3 head injury (RRR 6.1, 95% Confidence interval 2.80–13.38) were significantly more likely to be discharged to specialized rehabilitation than patients with a less severe head injury. Age < 18 years was negatively associated with discharge to a local hospital, while NCI 3–4, preinjury comorbidity, and increased severity of injuries in the lower extremities were positively associated. Conclusions: Two-thirds of the patients sustained severe traumatic injury, and 22% were discharged directly to specialized rehabilitation. Age, centrality of the residence, preinjury comorbidity, injury severity, length of hospital stay, and the number and specific types of injuries were factors that had the greatest influence on discharge destination. Introduction: Even though there is a clear agreement among researchers that psychological factors are a vital part of a football player's performance, the topic has not been investigated thoroughly. The present study aimed to examine the predictive value of psychological factors on female football players' match performance. Methods: A sample of 156 players from the top two leagues in Norway completed the following questionnaires: Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire 2 (PMCSQ-2), Big Five Inventory (BFI-20), Self-Regulated Learning questionnaire, and Grit-S and Sport Mental Toughness Questionnaire (SMTQ). Match performance data were collected from the online database of the performance analysis company InStat. Results: Results from a linear mixed model analysis showed that perceived mastery climate and extraversion were the only significant predictors of performance. Other relevant indicators, such as mental toughness, self-regulated learning, and grit, did not predict performance. Introduction: The burden of perinatal mental health problems was expected to increase during the COVID‐19 pandemic. We prospectively investigated the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on the mental health of pregnant and postpartum women in Norway and explored associations with their sociodemographic characteristics and personality traits. Material and methods: Sociodemographic information and the self‐reported impact of pandemic on wellbeing of pregnant women was collected using an online survey. To assess women's mental health, two validated questionnaires, the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder‐7 item Scale (GAD‐7), were used prenatally and postnatally. Personality traits were evaluated using HumanGuide, a web‐based ipsative psychological evaluation instrument. Results: 772 women were included prenatally, of which 526 also responded to the survey 4–6 weeks postnatally. The median age was 29 years, 53.6% of the women were nulliparous when enrolled, and 35.1% worked in the healthcare sector. The median EPDS (6.0; interquartile range [IQR] 3.0–10.0 vs 6.0; IQR: 3.0–10.0) and the median GAD‐7 (5.0; IQR 2.0–9.0 vs 5.0; IQR 2.0–9.0) were similar pre‐and postnatally. Prenatally, the proportion of women scoring ≥13 on EPDS and ≥10 on GAD‐7 was 14.5% (112/772) and 21.5% (166/772), whereas the postnatal figures were 15.6% (82/526) and 21.5% (113/526), respectively. The differences were not significant (P = 0.59 and P = 0.99). Being <25 years of age, being on pre‐pregnancy psychotherapy or psychotropic medication, frequent voluntary isolation, perception of maternity care not proceeding normally, avoiding seeking medical assistance due to fear of infection and having negative economic consequences during the COVID19 pandemic significantly increased the risk of both anxiety (GAD‐7 ≥10) and depression (EPDS ≥13). Nullipara had a higher risk of anxiety, whereas being a healthcare worker had a lower risk. The personality trait factors Power (P = 0.008), Quality (P = 0.008), Stability (P < 0.001) and Contacts (P < 0.001) were significant predictors of depression among pregnant women, whereas the Quality (P = 0.005) and Contacts (P = 0.003) were significant predictors of anxiety. Conclusions: During the initial phase of the COVID‐19 pandemic, the prevalence of depression (EPDS ≥ 13) and anxiety (GAD‐7 ≥ 10) was 14.5% and 21.5%, respectively, among Norwegian pregnant women. Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide and the leading cause of cancer related deaths among women. The high incidence and mortality of breast cancer calls for improved prevention, diagnostics, and treatment, including identification of new prognostic and predictive biomarkers for use in precision medicine. Material and methods: With the aim of compiling a cohort amenable to integrative study designs, we collected detailed epidemiological and clinical data, blood samples, and tumor tissue from a subset of participants from the prospective, population-based Norwegian Women and Cancer (NOWAC) study. These study participants were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in North Norway before 2013 according to the Cancer Registry of Norway and constitute the Clinical and Multi-omic (CAMO) cohort. Prospectively collected questionnaire data on lifestyle and reproductive factors and blood samples were extracted from the NOWAC study, clinical and histopathological data were manually curated from medical records, and archived tumor tissue collected. Results: The lifestyle and reproductive characteristics of the study participants in the CAMO cohort (n = 388) were largely similar to those of the breast cancer patients in NOWAC (n = 10 356). The majority of the cancers in the CAMO cohort were tumor grade 2 and of the luminal A subtype. Approx. 80% were estrogen receptor positive, 13% were HER2 positive, and 12% were triple negative breast cancers. Lymph node metastases were present in 31% at diagnosis. The epidemiological dataset in the CAMO cohort is complemented by mRNA, miRNA, and metabolomics analyses in plasma, as well as miRNA profiling in tumor tissue. Additionally, histological analyses at the level of proteins and miRNAs in tumor tissue are currently ongoing. Conclusion: The CAMO cohort provides data suitable for epidemiological, clinical, molecular, and multi-omics investigations, thereby enabling a systems epidemiology approach to translational breast cancer research. Objectives: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of movement disorders usually diagnosed in childhood. A substantial proportion are thought to be caused by antenatal events. Abnormalities of the umbilical cord and placenta are associated with an increased risk of adverse neonatal outcomes, but it is unclear whether these conditions also carry an increased risk of CP. We aimed to determine whether abnormalities of the umbilical cord or placenta are associated with CP and assess if these associations differ by sex of the child or gestational age at birth. Methods: We performed a national cohort study by linking data from The Medical Birth Registry of Norway with other national registries. All liveborn singletons born between 1999 and 2017 (n = 1 087 486) were included and followed up until the end of 2019. Diagnoses of CP were provided by the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme and the Norwegian Patient Register. We used generalized estimating equations and multilevel log binomial regression to calculate relative risks (RR), adjusted for year of birth, and stratified analyses were carried out based on sex and gestational age at birth. Exposures were abnormal umbilical cord (velamentous or marginal insertion, single umbilical artery (SUA), knots and entanglement), and placental abnormalities (retained placenta, placental abruption and previa). Results: A total of 2443 cases with CP (59.8% males) were identified. Velamentous cord insertion (adjusted RR (aRR), 2.11 (95% CI, 1.65–2.60)), cord knots (aRR, 1.53 (95% CI, 1.15–2.04)) and placental abnormalities (placenta previa (aRR, 3.03 (95% CI, 2.00–4.61)), placental abruption (aRR, 10.63 (95% CI, 8.57–13.18)) and retained placenta (aRR, 1.71 (95% CI, 1.32–2.22))) carried an increased risk of CP. Velamentous cord insertion was associated with CP regardless of gestational age or sex. A retained placenta was associated with a 2‐fold increased risk for CP in males, while the associations of SUA and cord knot with CP were significant only among females. Conclusions: The detection of placental and umbilical cord abnormalities may help identify children at increased risk of CP. The associations between placental or umbilical cord abnormalities and the risk of CP do not vary substantially with gestational age at birth or sex of the child. © 2023 The Authors. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in all Nordic countries which, though similar in demographics and healthcare systems, have noticeable differences in lung cancer survival. Historically, Denmark and Finland have had higher lung cancer incidences and lower survival than Norway and Sweden. All four countries have national cancer registries. Data in these registries are often compared, but their full potential as a source of learning across the Nordic countries is impeded by differences between the registries. In this paper, we describe and compare the Nordic registries on lung cancer–specific data and discuss how a more harmonized registration practice could increase their usefulness as a source for mutual learning and quality improvements. We describe and compare the characteristics of data on lung cancer cases from registries in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Moreover, we compare the results from the latest annual reports and specify how data may be acquired from the registries for research. Denmark has a separate clinical lung cancer registry with more detailed data than the other Nordic countries. Finland and Norway report lung cancer survival as relative survival, whereas Denmark and Sweden report overall survival. The Danish Lung Cancer Registry and the Swedish Cancer Registry do not receive data from the Cause of Death registries in contrast to the Finnish Cancer Registry and the Cancer Registry of Norway. The lung cancer registries in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden have high level of completeness. However, several important differences between the registries may bias comparative analyses. One of four marine cores of glacial sediments collected from a water depth of about 1200 m at Vestnesa Ridge (west of Svalbard) contained small fragments of coal, charcoal and moss. This material was restricted to a single level, and 14C dating of bivalves both above and below indicates an age of c. 18.0–15.5 kyr BP. Chemical analyses of the coal indicate that the provenance area was from the northern part of Andøya, North Norway. The moss fragment was identified as Aulacomnium turgidum, which is a wellknown species from the northern part of Andøya, which was an ice-free refugium with tundra vegetation during the Weichselian maximum. One small piece of charcoal with reasonably well-preserved cell structures is derived from burnt Salix sp. These findings are important, because they demonstrate the presence of drift ice carrying organic material from the northern part of Andøya towards the west coast of Svalbard during Heinrich event H1, an event of extensive ice-rafting in the Nordic seas. This also implies that some components of the vascular plant communities growing on Svalbard today, might originally have been imported as seeds floating on sea ice, before stranding along the coast of Svalbard. The plant colonization of Svalbard can thus have started already during Heinrich event H1. The finding of charcoal can only be explained by a fire due to lightning and not by campfire, because the first human population arrived in northern Norway at a much later time (probably during Preboreal). Objective: To explore risk profiles of the different types of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH >500ml or severe PPH >1500ml) and their recurrence risks in a subsequent delivery. Methods: With data from The Medical Birth Registry of Norway and Statistics Norway we performed a population-based cohort study including all singleton deliveries in Norway from 1967–2017. Multilevel logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratio (OR), with 95% confidence interval (CI), with different PPH types (PPH >500ml or PPH >1500ml (severe PPH) combined with retained placenta, uterine atony, obstetric trauma, dystocia, or undefined cause) as outcomes. Result: We identified 277 746 PPH cases of a total of 3 003 025 births (9.3%) from 1967 to 2017. Retained placenta (and/or membranes) was most often registered as severe PPH (29.3%). Maternal, fetal, and obstetric characteristics showed different associations with the PPH types. Male sex of the neonate was associated with reduced risk of PPH. This effect was strongest on PPH due to retained placenta (adjusted OR, (aOR): 0.80, 95% CI 0.78–0.82), atony (aOR 0.92, 95% CI: 0.90–0.93) and PPH with undefined cause (aOR 0.96, 95% CI: 0.95–0.97). Previous cesarean section showed a strong association with PPH due to dystocia (aOR of 13.2, 95% CI: 12.5–13.9). Recurrence risks were highest for the same type: PPH associated with dystocia (aOR: 6.8, 95% CI: 6.3–7.4), retained placenta and/or membranes (aOR: 5.9, 95% CI: 5.5–6.4), atony (aOR: 4.0, 95% CI: 3.8–4.2), obstetric trauma (aOR: 3.9, 95% CI: 3.5–4.3) and PPH of undefined cause (aOR: 2.2, 95% CI: 2.1–2.3). Conclusion: Maternal, fetal and obstetric characteristics had differential effects on types of PPH. Recurrence differed considerably between PPH types. Retained placenta was most frequently registered with severe PPH, and showed strongest effect of sex; delivery of a boy was associated with lower risk of PPH. Background: Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common reasons for disability globally. Digital interventions are a promising means of supporting people to self-manage LBP, but implementation of digital interventions has been suboptimal. An artificial intelligence-driven app, selfBACK, was developed to support self-management of LBP as an adjunct to usual care. To better understand the process of implementation from a participant perspective, we qualitatively explored factors influencing embedding, integrating, and sustaining engagement with the selfBACK app, and the self-perceived effects, acceptability, and satisfaction with the selfBACK app. Methods: Using a qualitative interview study and an analytic framework approach underpinned by Normalization Process Theory (NPT), we investigated the experiences of patients who participated in the selfBACK randomized controlled trial (RCT). Interviews focused on the motivation to participate in the RCT, experiences of using the selfBACK app, and views about future intended use and potential of using digital health interventions for self-management of LBP. Participants were purposively sampled to represent diversity in age, sex, and implementation reflected by a proxy measure of number of app-generated self-management plans during the first three months of RCT participation. Results: Twenty-six participants aged 21–78, eleven females and fifteen men, with two to fourteen self-management plans, were interviewed between August 2019 and April 2020. A broad range of factors influencing implementation of selfBACK within all constructs of NPT were identified. Key facilitating factors were preferences and beliefs favoring self-management, a friendly, motivational, and reassuring supporter, tailoring and personalization, convenience and ease of use, trustworthiness, perceiving benefits, and tracking achievements. Key impeding factors were preferences and beliefs not favoring self-management, functionality issues, suboptimal tailoring and personalization, insufficient time or conflicting life circumstances, not perceiving benefits, and insufficient involvement of health care practitioners. Self-perceived effects on pain and health, behavior/attitude, and gaining useful knowledge varied by participant. Conclusions: The high prevalence of LBP globally coupled with the advantages of providing help through an app offers opportunities to help countless people. A range of factors should be considered to facilitate implementation of self-management of LBP or similar pain conditions using digital health tools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A significant share of new technology-based ventures exit through trade sale at an early stage of firm development. While trade sale is an important exit route for entrepreneurs and investors, and a potential source of new innovations and technology for acquiring firms, we have limited knowledge about the factors that help to effectively achieve a trade sale. We employ a unique dataset tracking the population of research-based spin-offs in Norway and conduct in-depth case studies of nine trade sales. Building on 52 interviews and other secondary data, we inductively develop propositions outlining three dimensions that lead to a successful trade sale—potential synergies, credible alternatives, and uncertainty reduction. We show that these enablers of trade sales are not only linked to the focal venture but also related to the idiosyncratic dyad with the buyer, reflecting both the potential for and likelihood of trade sale. Consequently, our study contributes to the literatures on entrepreneurial exit and academic entrepreneurship by mapping the important but under-explored area of trade sale as an exit mode. To what extent organized employers and trade unions support social policies is contested. This article examines the case of work-family policies (WFPs), which have surged to become a central part of the welfare state. In that expansion, the joint role of employers and unions has largely been disregarded in the comparative political economy literature. The article posits that the shift from Fordist to knowledge economies is the impetus for the social partners' support for WFPs. If women make up an increasing share of high-skilled employees, employers start favoring WFPs to increase their labor supply. Similarly, unions favor WFPs if women constitute a significant part of their membership base. Yet the extent to which changes in preferences translate into policy depends on the presence of corporatist institutions. These claims are supported with statistical analyses of WFPs in eighteen advanced democracies across five decades and an in-depth case study of Norway. In this article, possible ethnic bias in access to the national Danish police-based Victim Offender Mediation (VOM) programme is investigated. The analyses of this project show that the VOM personnel informants believe that ethnic minority offenders are underrepresented in this VOM programme. Also, numerous examples of essentialist views on ethnicity and culture emerge among police personnel in the interview and observation data. Yet interestingly, the national VOM participation rates in penal cases analysed for this article show that while young male ethnic minority immigrants are underrepresented in VOM some years, young male ethnic minority descendants are actually overrepresented in VOM meetings. Predicting plant–pollinator interaction networks over space and time will improve our understanding of how environmental change is likely to impact the functioning of ecosystems. Here we propose a framework for producing spatially explicit predictions of the occurrence and number of pairwise plant–pollinator interactions and of the species richness, diversity and abundance of pollinators visiting flowers. We call the framework 'MetaComNet' because it aims to link metacommunity dynamics to the assembly of ecological networks.To illustrate the MetaComNet functionality, we used a dataset on bee–flower networks sampled at 16 sites in southeast Norway along with random forest models to predict bee–flower interactions. We included variables associated with climatic conditions (elevation) and habitat availability within a 250 m radius of each site. Regional commonness, site‐specific distance to conspecifics, social guild and floral preference were included as bee traits. Each plant species was assigned a score reflecting its site‐specific abundance, and four scores reflecting the bee species that the plant family is known to attract. We used leave‐one‐out cross‐validations to assess the models' ability to predict pairwise plant–bee interactions across the landscape.The relationship between observed occurrence or absence of interactions and the predicted probability of interactions was nearly proportional (GLMlogistic regression slope = 1.09), matching the data well (AUC = 0.88), and explained 30% of the variation. Predicted probability of interactions was also correlated with the number of observed pairwise interactions (r = 0.32). The sum of predicted probabilities of bee–flower interactions were positively correlated with observed species richness (r = 0.50), diversity (r = 0.48) and abundance (r = 0.42) of wild bees interacting with plant species within sites.Our findings show that the MetaComNet framework can be a useful approach for making spatially explicit predictions and mapping plant–pollinator interactions. Such predictions have the potential to identify areas where the pollination potential for wild plants is particularly high, and where conservation action should be directed to preserve this ecosystem function. Background: For decades there has been a continuous increase in the number of people receiving welfare benefits for being outside the work force due to mental illness. There is sufficient evidence for the efficacy of Individual Placement and Support (IPS) for gaining and maintaining competitive employment. Yet, IPS is still not implemented as routine practice in public community mental health services. Knowledge about implementation challenges as experienced by the practitioners is limited. This study seeks to explore the experiences of the front-line workers, known as employment specialists, in the early implementation phase. Methods: Qualitative data were collected through field notes and five focus group interviews. The study participants were 45 IPS employment specialists located at 14 different sites in Northern Norway. Transcripts and field notes were analysed by thematic analyses. Results: While employment specialists are key to the implementation process, implementing IPS requires more than creating and filling the role of the employment specialist. It requires adjustments in multiple organisations. The new employment specialist then is a pioneer of service development. Some employment specialists found this a difficult challenge, and one that did not correspond to their expectations going into this role. Others appreciated the pioneering role. IPS implementation also challenged the delegation of roles and responsibilities between sectors, and related legal frameworks related to confidentiality and access. The facilitating role of human relationships emphasised the importance of social support which is an important factor in a healthy work environment. Rural areas with long distances and close- knit societies may cause challenges for implementation. Conclusion: The study provides increased understanding on what happens in the early implementation phase of IPS from the employment specialists' perspective. Results from this study can contribute to increased focus on job satisfaction, turnover and recruitment of employment specialists, factors which have previously been shown to influence the success of IPS. The greatest challenge for making "IPS efficacy in trials" become "IPS effectiveness in the real world" is implementation, and this study has highlighted some of the implementation issues. Introduction: Cesarean section is the single most important risk factor for postpartum infection. Where the rest of the world shows increasing trends, the cesarean section rates are low in Norway and risk factors for infection after cesarean section may differ in high and low cesarean section settings. The goal of this study was to examine independent risk factors for surgical site infection after cesarean delivery in a setting of low cesarean section rates. Material and methods: We conducted a hospital‐based case‐control study at Haukeland University Hospital. We included women who presented to our hospital with surgical site infection after cesarean section during the years 2014–2016 (n = 75). Controls were selected at a ratio of 2:1 (n = 148). Cases and controls were compared with respect to maternal and pregnancy characteristics using uni‐ and multivariable logistic regression models. Main outcome measures were anticipated risk factors for surgical site infection. Results: The occurrence of surgical site infection was 0.4% and 5.4% after elective and emergency cesarean section, respectively. Compared to women without surgical site infection, women with surgical site infection were almost thrice more obese before pregnancy (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.2–7.0), four times more likely to have preexisting psychiatric conditions (OR 4.4, 95% CI 1.1–17.6), and five times more likely to receive blood transfusion (OR 5.1, 95% CI 1.4–18.8). Signs of infection during labor was a marginally significant risk factor for surgical site infection (OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.0–5.4). Conclusions: Emergency cesarean section was a significant risk factor for surgical site infection. Pregestational obesity, preexisting psychiatric conditions, and blood transfusion during or following delivery, were independent risk factors for surgical site infection. Signs of infection during labor was a marginally significant risk factor. Women with either of these risk factors should be carefully monitored and evaluated for signs of infection in the postpartum period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Studies on the family aggregation of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) are scarce and with inconsistent results, and to what extent current birthweight influences recurrence between relatives remains to be studied. Further, family aggregation of PPH has been studied from an individual, but not from a public heath perspective. We aimed to investigate family aggregation of PPH in Norway, how birthweight influences these effects, and to estimate the proportion of PPH cases attributable to a family history of PPH and current birthweight.Material and Methods: Using data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway, Statistics Norway, and Central Population Registry of Norway we identified individuals as newborns, parents, grandparents, and full and half-siblings, and studied 1 002 687 mother-offspring, 841 164 father-offspring, and 761 011 both-parents-offspring pairs. We used multilevel logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (OR) with 95% CI.Results: If the birth of the mother but not of the father involved PPH, then the OR of PPH (>500 mL) in the next generation was 1.44 (95% CI 1.39-1.49). If the birth of the father but not of the mother involved PPH, then OR was 1.12 (95% CI 1.08-1.16). These effects were stronger in severe PPH. Recurrence between siblings was highest between full sisters (OR 1.47, 95% CI 1.41-1.52), followed by maternal half-sisters, paternal half-sisters, and partners of full brothers. A family history of PPH or birthweight of 4000 g or more accounted for ≤5% and 15% of the total number of PPH cases, respectively.Conclusions: A history of PPH in relatives influenced the recurrence risk of PPH in a dose-response pattern consistent with the anticipated proportion of shared genes.
