Prior research suggests that parenting affects children's relationships, including those with teachers, although there is variation across individuals in such effects. Given evidence suggesting that oxytocin may be particularly important for the quality of social relationships, we tested the hypotheses (a) that change in parenting from 4 to 6 years of age influences and predicts change in the student-teacher relationship from 6 to 8 years of age and (b) that this effect is moderated by a polymorphism related to the child's oxytocin receptor gene ("OXTR"), rs53576. In 2 studies, participants included, respectively, 652 socioeconomically diverse Norwegian children from a community sample (50.8% male; mean age of 54.9 months at first assessment) and 559 such children from 8 different U.S. locales (49.0% male; approximately 54 months at the first assessment). Norwegian results showed that change in parenting predicted change in student-teacher relationships, but only in the case of children homozygous for the A allele of rs53576 and in a manner consistent with differential-susceptibility theory: for AA carriers, when parenting changed for the worse, so did children's relationship with teachers, whereas when parenting changed for the better, the teacher-child relationships improved accordingly. Such G×E findings could not be replicated in the American sample. Results are discussed in terms of 2 contrasting models of Person-×-Environment interaction (differential susceptibility and diathesis stress) and potential reasons for failure to replicate.

Current evidence suggests that conflicted student-teacher relationships may increase behavior problems in children and vice-versa, but this may be due to confounding. We therefore analyzed their relation applying a within-person approach that adjusts for all time-invariant confounding effects, involving samples from Norway (n = 964, 50.9% females) and the USA (n = 1,150, 48.3% females) followed from age 4–12 years with similar measures. Increased parent-reported behavior problems forecasted increased student-teacher conflict to a similar extent in both countries (β = 0.07, p =.010), whereas teacher-reported behavior problems predicted increased student-teacher conflict more strongly in Norway (β = 0.14, p =.001) than in the US (β = 0.08, p =.050). Increased teacher-child conflict also predicted increased parent-reported (β = 0.07, p =.010), but not teacher-reported, behavior problems in both countries. Peer problems are linked to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and the serotonin system is thought to be involved in ADHD-related behavior. Hence, from a Gene × Environment perspective, the serotonin transporter 5-HTTLPR may play a moderating role. In two large community samples, the moderating role of 5-HTTLPR was examined related to more hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms (HI symptoms) predicted by more peer problems. In Study 1, involving 642 Norwegian children, results indicated that for s-allele carriers only, caregiver-reported peer problems at age 4 predicted more parent-reported HI symptoms at age 6. Purpose: The adjunctive ablation of areas of complex fractionated electrogram (CFE) to pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is an emerging strategy for patients with non-paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). We studied the long-term outcomes of this approach., Methods: Sixty-six patients (mean age 58 ± 9, 86.4 % male) with non-paroxysmal AF underwent ablation procedures consisting of PVI plus extensive CFE ablation. Post-ablation atrial tachycardia (AT) was also targeted if presented. All patients were followed up regularly on an ambulatory basis by means of ECG and Holter recordings., Results: After a mean follow-up period of 40 ± 14 months and 1.7 ± 0.7 procedures, 38 patients (57.6 %) were free of arrhythmias, 15 (22.7 %) displayed clinical improvement and 13 (19.7 %) suffered recurrences of persistent AF/AT. Females displayed poorer long-term outcomes than males (arrhythmia-free 22.2 vs. 63.2 %, p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that long duration of uninterrupted AF prior to the procedure was an additional predictor of long-term failure (odds ratio 1.49, p < 0.01). ROC analysis (area under curve 0.80; p < 0.001) estimated 3.5 years as the optimal cut-off point for predicting long-term failure (sensitivity 85 %, specificity 74 %). The cumulative data showed a significantly higher percentage of arrhythmia-free patients when the duration of AF had been ≤ 2 years (69.7 %) and ≤ 4 years (68.9 %) than when it was > 4 years (33.3 %; p < 0.01)., Conclusions: PVI + CFE ablation in non-paroxysmal AF appears to provide a reasonable proportion of arrhythmia-free patients during long-term follow-up. Poorer long-term results can be expected among female patients and those with an uninterrupted AF duration of > 4 years.
