The article discusses a study of the prevalence and outcomes of same-day discharge among older patients undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in the U.S. between November 2004 and December 2008. The Duke University Medical Center institutional review board in North Carolina has approved the study. Death and rehospitalization were included in the primary end points assessed for the analysis. Results stress the variability of same-day discharge among older patients undergoing elective PCI across PCI facilities. Also noted is the lack of association between a same-day discharge strategy and increased risk for death or readmission.
