This article focuses on a community-initiated intervention to reduce HIV and STD transmission among Latino men, who have been disproportionally affected in the U.S. Community-based participatory research was used in partnership with HoMBReS, a sexual risk reduction intervention, in the fast-growing Latino community in predominantly rural Chatham County in central North Carolina. This study employs an innovative strategy using lay health advisors (LHAs) working within existing social networks, behavior change models employing social cognitive theory and empowerment education and strong partnership approaches to develop, implement, assess, revise, and distribute an HIV/STD prevention intervention. LHA training and lessons learned from the training are described. HoMBReS is an ongoing intervention pilot study.
