The article reports on a workshop on the representation of Native North Americans, held from April 12-15, 2012, in Zürich, Switzerland. Topics discussed included literary narratives by and about Native Americans, stereotypes of Native Americans in European ethnography and popular culture, and the representation of Native American history and culture in museums. Keynote speeches were delivered by Gerald McMaster and Deborah Madsen.

This article presents a response to the essay "Land and Literacy'" by Stephanie Fitzgerald and Hilary E. Wyss, published in this issue. The author reflects on the relationships between contemporary and historical Native American literature and examines how the past, present and future are written about in Native American literature and understood in Native American culture. It examines how an understanding of the interrelationships between land, writing and literacy can inform 21st century Native American literary studies.
