This study seeks to identify traditional games, its uses and importance to the overall development (physical, mental, social, moral and intellectual) of the child. The study is participatory in approach and qualitative in nature. The work is based on the psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud who opined that during play, the child expresses negative emotions which they have no control in their everyday lives. Freud sees play in terms of catharsis-purgation of emotions. It is his contention that playing provides a safe haven for the child to discharge these emotions and gain control, since play is intrinsically motivated. It is supported by the psychosocial theory of Lev Vygostsky, who views play as a significant tool for children's development. According to him, children make meaning of their environment through play and that play helps to develop 85% of a child's brain during the first five years of their life. The data for the study were collected using two methods, namely: practical experiment with the pupils and the participatory approach involving the researcher and primary three and four pupils of Police Children's School, Oji River, Enugu State. The data from the various games played were assessed and analyzed using explanation analysis from the different practical sessions. Ten traditional games were selected and used by the researcher for the experiment. The researcher concludes that a child's imaginative and problem-solving abilities are enhanced when they participate and play together as a group. The work therefore recommends the application and use of the traditional games in the education of the child as this will invariably lead to the production of a sound individual capable of contributing to the growth of our nation, Nigeria. The traditional perceptions of disease causation often reinforce the feelings of stigmatization and discrimination towards individuals who have recovered from an illness. This study investigated the existing social practices with regard to stigmatization and discrimination against COVID-19 survivors in Southwest Nigeria. Using the Psychoanalytic Theory, this phenomenological qualitative study utilized the snowball sampling method and an in-depth interview to sample 25 COVID-19 survivors in Southwest Nigeria. Collected data for this study were analyzed thematically, using content analysis with the aid of the ATLAS.ti software. Findings from the study indicated that COVID-19 survivors generally experience sympathy, hostility, mockery, and social exclusion. Basically, the nature and type of stigmatization experienced by the survivors were psychological in nature. Reactions towards stigmatization manifested in negative emotions, such as suicidal thoughts and emotional outbursts. The study recommended the use of effective mediums to enlighten the public about the dangers inherent in discrimination against survivors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study investigated the prevalence of isolated sleep paralysis (ISP) among workers; and the relationship between examination stress and ISP among 183 undergraduates in the week of examination, compared with 61 control students. The correlation between ISP experience and psychological distress and distressing life conditions was explored using Goldberg's General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and a life events scale. It was found that 153 (35.5%) subjects admitted having ISP at least twice in the past year. There was no significant difference in prevalence between workers and students. There was non-significant tendency for students under examination stress to report higher frequencies of ISP. ISP was significantly associated with GHQ-12 and life events scores. The findings are similar to African-American reports. An illustrative case was cited to support the psychoanalytic view of ISP as a manifestation of an inhibition that serves to ward off forbidden impulses. It is hoped that the awareness of ISP promoted by these studies will empower therapists to help people who suffer from the psychic distress associated with ISP whilst demystifying the enigma of ISP among those who seek help at religious faith healing centres, where supernatural beliefs concerning ISP are encouraged.

This work identified an important attitude of Nigerians namely that behaviour is controlled from outside including deviant behaviour. Furthermore, there is always some external situation which has some relationship, no matter how remote to mental illness. On the other hand very often psychic distress is often communicated through the body. There is an unconscious link between somatic complaint and the underlying psychological and social problem. Most types of mental illness in Nigeria are expressed through the body and are felt to be caused from outside. A psychological model is described which makes conscious the link between the bodily discomfort and the underlying social or psychological problem. The model also tries to find the outside situation which is attributable to present mental illness. Through social work the problem can be resolved or through psychotherapy accepted as unchangeable and real.
