Aims. In the framework of the multi-wavelength and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) monitoring program TANAMI (Tracking Active Nuclei with Austral Milliarcsecond Interferometry), we study the evolution of the parsec-scale radio emission in radio galaxies in the southern hemisphere and their relationship to the γ-ray properties of the sources. Our study investigates systematically, for the first time, the relationship between the two energy regimes in radio galaxies. In this first paper, we focus on Fermi-LAT-detected sources. Methods. The TANAMI program monitors a large sample of radio-loud AGN at 8.4 GHz and 22.3 GHz with the Australian long baseline array (LBA) and associated telescopes in Antarctica, Chile, New Zealand and South Africa. We performed a kinematic analysis for five γ-ray detected radio galaxies using multi-epoch 8.4 GHz VLBI images, deriving limits on intrinsic jet parameters such as speed and viewing angle. We analyzed 103 months of Fermi-LAT data in order to study possible connections between the γ-ray properties and the pc-scale jets of Fermi-LAT-detected radio galaxies, both in terms of variability and average properties. We discuss the individual source results and draw preliminary conclusions on sample properties including published VLBI results from the MOJAVE (Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments) survey, with a total of fifteen sources. Results. We find that the first γ-ray detection of Pictor A might be associated with the passage of a new VLBI component through the radio core, which appears to be a defining feature of high-energy emitting Fanaroff-Riley type II radio galaxies. We detect subluminal parsec-scale jet motions in the peculiar AGN PKS 0521−36, and we confirm the presence of fast γ-ray variability in the source down to timescales of six hours, which is not accompanied by variations in the VLBI jet. We robustly confirm the presence of significant superluminal motion, up to βapp ∼ 3, in the jet of the TeV radio galaxy PKS 0625−35. Our VLBI results constrain the jet viewing angle to be θ <  53°, allowing for the possibility of a closely aligned jet. Finally, by analyzing the first pc-scale multi-epoch images of the prototypical compact symmetric object (CSO) PKS 1718−649, we place an upper limit on the separation speed between the two mini-lobes. This in turn allows us to derive a lower limit on the age of the source. Conclusions. We can draw some preliminary conclusions on the relationship between pc-scale jets and γ-ray emission in radio galaxies, based on Fermi-LAT-detected sources with available multi-epoch VLBI measurements. We find that the VLBI core flux density correlates with the γ-ray flux, as seen in blazars. On the other hand, the γ-ray luminosity does not show any dependence on the core brightness temperature and core dominance, which are two common indicators of jet Doppler boosting. This seems to indicate that γ-ray emission in radio galaxies is not driven by orientation-dependent effects, as in blazars, in accordance with the unified model of jetted AGN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Australian redback spiders ( Latrodectus hasseltii Thorell, 1870) are invasive, opportunistic predators that threaten New Zealand fauna. Initially recorded in Central Otago in 1981, they were observed in 2012 preying on the endemic, nationally endangered Cromwell chafer beetle ( Prodontria lewisii Broun, 1904) in the species' last occupied habitat, the 81 ha Cromwell Chafer Beetle Nature Reserve (CCBNR). We surveyed the redback spider population over the entire reserve in October (spring) and December (summer) 2013, recording web occupants, web condition, and prey caught. During the 5 weeks between surveys, prey caught in half of the recorded spider webs were monitored each week. We estimated a redback population of between 208 and 371 spiders, an average of between 2.57 and 4.58 spiders per hectare within the CCBNR, with maximum web densities ranging between 8.7 and 10.7 webs per hectare. In the final survey in December, 278 P. lewisii cadavers were found in redback spider webs. Redback spiders occupied a large portion of the habitat to which the Cromwell chafer beetles are restricted. Ten of the 26 prey species recorded in webs were native, including McCann's skink ( Oligosoma maccanni); the first record of skink predation by redback spiders in New Zealand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article offers an overview of the integrated catchment management research programme in Motueka, New Zealand. It states that the research was based on the assumption that achieving ecosystem resilience at a catchment scale requires active measures to develop community resilience. It describes a generic adaptive planning and action process with knowledge management and stakeholder involvement processes.

The article examines the importance of social process and multiple engagement approach in developing collaboration and learning in integrated catchment management (ICM). It focuses on the experience of an ICM research programme based in the Motueka catchment in New Zealand. It highlights the significance of multiple engagement approaches to address different constituent needs and opportunities.

Eight South American geographic populations of the parthenogenic, proovigenic, koinobiont parasitoid Microctonus hyperodae Loan (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Euphorinae) were introduced to New Zealand to assist management of the pasture pest Listronotus bonariensis (Kuschel) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Geographic variation in fecundity has been suggested as a reason for the populations' differential successes in establishing in New Zealand. This study investigated whether geographic variation in fecundity was due to corresponding variation in pre-oviposition egg load (other possible sources of fecundity variation include searching efficiency, egg survival and female longevity). Variation in egg load accounted for that in fecundity, but also showed that the variation in fecundity was not as great as it had first appeared. Geographic variation in egg load did not explain the pattern of population establishment observed in New Zealand. Egg load was proportional to parasitoid size and this relationship was stronger in populations originating from west, rather than east, of the Andes. Soil erosion is a significant environmental issue worldwide. It affects water quality, biodiversity, and land productivity. New Zealand government agencies and regional councils work to mitigate soil erosion through policies, management programmes, and funding for soil conservation projects. Information about cost-effectiveness is crucial for planning, targeting, and implementing erosion mitigation to achieve improvements in sediment-related water quality. While there is a good understanding of the costs of erosion mitigation measures, there is a dearth of literature on their cost-effectiveness in reducing sediment loads and improving water quality at the catchment level. In this study, we estimate the cost-effectiveness of erosion mitigation measures in meeting visual water clarity targets. The analysis utilizes the spatially explicit SedNetNZ erosion process and sediment budget modelling in the Manawatū-Whanganui Region and region-specific mitigation costs. The erosion mitigation measures considered in the analysis include afforestation, bush retirement, riparian retirement, space-planted trees, and gully tree planting. We modelled two scenarios with on-farm erosion mitigation implemented across the region from 2021 to 2100, resulting in a 48% and 60% reduction of total sediment load. We estimate the marginal costs to achieve the visual national bottom line for water clarity, as assessed by the length of waterways that meet the clarity targets. We also estimate the marginal costs of improving average water clarity, which can be linked with non-market valuation studies when conducting a cost-benefit analysis. We find that gully tree planting and space-planted trees are the most cost-effective mitigation measures and that riparian retirement is the least cost-effective. Moreover, cost-effectiveness is highly dependent on current land use and the biophysical features of the landscape. Suspended fine sediment has a significant impact on freshwater quality variables such as visual clarity (VC). However, freshwater quality is related to the attributes of the catchment sources contributing fine sediment to the stream network. Here, the extent to which an array of sources defined spatially according to erosion process and geological parent material may be discriminated and classified based on sediment-related water quality (SRWQ) attributes that potentially affect VC was examined. Erosion sources were sampled across two New Zealand catchments representing six types of erosion and eight parent materials. Erosion source measurements focused on particle size, organic matter content, and light beam attenuation (which is convertible to VC). The source data were analysed to: 1) evaluate source variability using a combination of Kruskal-Wallis and principal component analysis; 2) reclassify sources using a Random Forest model; and 3) demonstrate how erosion source affects VC for a range of theoretical sediment concentrations (SC) using a simple empirical model. The results indicate that SRWQ attributes show significant variation across erosion sources. The extent to which attributes differed between sources often related to whether there was a strong association between a specific erosion process and parent material. The 19 a priori source classifications were reduced to 5 distinct sources that combined erosion process and parent material (i.e., bank erosion-alluvium; mass movement-ancient volcanics; mass movement-sedimentary; surficial erosion; gully-unconsolidated sandstone). At low SC, the impact of erosion source on VC became most evident ranging from 2.6 to 5.6 m at SC of 5 g m -3 . Animals used for sport, recreation and display are highly visible and can divide community attitudes. The study of animal welfare and ethics (AWE) as part of veterinary education is important because it is the responsibility of veterinarians to use their scientific knowledge and skills to promote animal welfare in the context of community expectations. To explore the attitudes of veterinary students in Australia and New Zealand to AWE, a survey of the current cohort was undertaken. The survey aimed to reveal how veterinary students in Australia and New Zealand rate the importance of five selected AWE topics for Day One Competences in animals used in sport, recreation and display and to establish how veterinary students' priorities were associated with gender and stage of study. The response rate (n = 851) across the seven schools was just over 25%. Results indicated little variation on ratings for topics. The topics were ranked in the following order (most to least important): Pushing of animals to their physiologic/behavioral limits; ownership/responsibility; euthanasia; educating the public; and behavior, selection, and training for sport and recreation displays. In contrast to related studies, ratings were not associated with stage of study and there were few differences associated with gender. More females rated the pushing of animals to physiologic/behavioral limits as extremely important than did males ( p < .001). The role of veterinarians in advocating for and educating the public about the welfare of animals used in sport, recreation and display merits further discussion.

Purpose: The aim of this work was to assess the safety and efficacy of the VWING Vascular Needle Guide to assist in cannulation of difficult or impossible to access fistulae using the buttonhole cannulation technique., Methods: VWING devices were surgically implanted into patients with difficult to access fistulae. A nondevice site and a device site were used to access the fistula and perform dialysis over a six month period. The device site utilized the buttonhole cannulation technique. The performance of each access site was recorded., Results: VWING devices were implanted in nine patients. A total of 387 cannulations took place over 1367 study days. The device site was successfully used 94% of the time compared to 77% for the nondevice site. Cannulation success was comparable between the device and nondevice sites. Ease of insertion, pain during insertion and complication rates were also comparable. No interventions were required at the device site to maintain access compared with four interventions for the nondevice access site., Conclusions: The VWING performed as intended by facilitating required repeated access to the vascular system and access for hemodialysis treatment. The study has demonstrated that the VWING is a potential solution for access to difficult to cannulate fistulae.

Eight South American geographical populations of the parasitoid Microctonus hyperodae Loan were collected in South America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay) and released in New Zealand for biological control of the weevil Listronotus bonariensis (Kuschel), a pest of pasture grasses and cereals. DNA sequencing (16S, COI, 28S, ITS1, beta-tubulin), RAPD, AFLP, microsatellite, SSCP and RFLP analyses were used to seek markers for discriminating between the South American populations. All of the South American populations were more homogeneous than expected. However, variation in microsatellites and 16S gene sequences corroborated morphological, allozyme and other phenotypic evidence of trans-Andes variation between the populations. The Chilean populations were the most genetically variable, while the variation present on the eastern side of the Andes mountains was a subset of that observed in Chile.
