The article examines the geographic distribution of Pfiesteria spp. in Tasman Bay's well-flushed estuaries and Canterbury's brackish lakes in New Zealand. Pfiesteria piscicida and P. shumwayae were present throughout the sampling areas as determined by polymerase chain reaction-based detection assays. Furthermore, the two species occurred in a wide range of salinities and temperatures, but their presence were not considered an immediate risk to fish or human health.
