This qualitative narrative correspondence study investigates older adults' experiences of physical activity (PA) during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns in Aotearoa, New Zealand. This paper presents a reflexive thematic analysis of 501 letters received from 568 participants that discussed PA. Participants described PA as bringing joy and rhythm to daily life under stay-at-home measures. The most frequently discussed forms of PA included exercising, gardening, and housework. Four interconnected conceptual themes identified were as follows: (a) renegotiating environmental relationships, (b) social connection, (c) pleasure and PA, and (d) navigating active aging discourses. This paper emphasizes the important environmental and social motivations for becoming and remaining physically active despite restrictions on movement. Older adults' understandings and performance of PA were heavily shaped by active aging discourses. As such, we suggest that initiatives seeking to promote PA should foreground older adults' feelings of connection, productivity, and pleasure and recognize their diversity. Social groups and the environments they create play a prominent role in the desistance versus persistence of young peoples' criminal offending. Social Identity Mapping (SIM) provides a quantitative method for understanding the social network of young offenders. This exploratory study was guided by two broad research questions: (1) using the SIM task, we wanted to investigate the experiences of young people moving through the Youth Justice System in Aotearoa New Zealand, and (2) through the use of the SIM task combined with qualitative interviews, we wanted to gain novel insight into the influences that important social groups had on young people's behaviour. The participants were nine young people currently working their way through the Youth Justice System in Aotearoa New Zealand. The average number of groups identified in the SIM task was four (range: 3–6), with the most common groups identified being friends, family, and Gisborne (i.e., the town in which participants all lived). Through the semi‐structured interviews, participants noted that they were excluded from some groups (e.g., school) due to their delinquent behaviour. In addition, despite strong motivation to join the workforce and develop a career, participants' social networks and low educational attainment made achieving this goal very challenging. Located within feminist scholarship on sport, leisure and physical cultures, this article explores our attempts to understand what conducting 'research with responsibility' means as White, settler-coloniser, immigrant women researching surfing, place and community in Aotearoa New Zealand. Taking inspiration from Hamilton's 'intersectional reflexivity' and Māori feminist scholars' discussion of (de)colonizing methodologies, we discuss the development of our intersectional, collaborative methodology to understand our relationships to place, community and surfing. This co-ethnographic approach helped us navigate the ethics and challenges of knowledge production in Aotearoa New Zealand, and enabled us to be aware of, and open to, different worldviews and ways of knowing. We argue this methodology has value in developing better recognition of our own privileges; understanding of the intersectional politics-of-place we are part of as researchers, and as community members; and of the assumptions, motivations and values that inform our research practices. Physical activity (PA) is beneficial for both the physical and psychological health of prostate cancer (PCa) survivors. This study identified and examined motives for PA in a cross-section of PCa survivors, including both men in remission and those receiving treatment in the form of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Sixteen PCa survivors from Auckland, New Zealand were individually interviewed. Data were analyzed using an inductive thematic approach. Both groups of men were motivated to engage in PA post-diagnosis to obtain and experience the physical, mental, and cognitive health-related benefits associated with regular PA engagement. Past history of PA was also identified as a motive for current PA for men in remission. These findings provide important insight into how PCa survivors perceive the benefits of PA as a part of their cancer survivorship. Healthcare practitioners, exercise physiologists, and cancer support organizations can use this information to further improve PCa survivors' quality of life and overall cancer survivorship by better promoting PA to these individuals. Cats, including companion cats, inflict extensive harm on wildlife. Using a national survey of 2000 households in New Zealand, we investigated the influence of involvement (an indicator of motivation) on the willingness of cat owners to keep their cats indoors at night. We found that respondents' intentions to protect wildlife, and the frequency with which respondents with cats kept them indoors at night, was influenced by their involvement with cat welfare and their involvement with protecting wildlife, in addition to their attitudes and subjective norms. We also found that keeping cats indoors at night could be characterised as involving approach-avoidance conflict. Our findings have implications for efforts to increase the adoption by cat owners of keeping cats inside at night regarding the attentiveness of cat owners to promotional activities. Our findings suggest that such activities will not be particularly effective in the absence of cat-friendly, inexpensive, practical, and easily maintained devices that enable cats to be kept inside. Importantly, when the adoption of keeping cats inside at night is appropriately characterised as approach-avoidance conflict, our results suggest that promotional activities seeking to persuade cat owners that pet cats cause much greater harm to wildlife than they might believe are most likely to have a limited and likely temporary effect and may even be counterproductive. Background: Mental distress is on the rise for young people, and there are high levels of unmet need for support. Increasingly, young people are engaging with online mechanisms of support to avoid cost and wait times; however, online support does have its limitations. We surveyed young people, 15–30 years of age, in Aotearoa New Zealand to explore their views of digital support for mental health. The aim of this study was to find out from young people what they thought about various types of online support and perceived benefits and drawbacks. Methods: A cross‐sectional online survey promoted through social media advertising was used. Participants included anyone aged 15–30 years living in Aotearoa New Zealand. The survey ran for 10 weeks between February and May 2022. It included demographic questions and asked about (i) use of digital support for mental health; (ii) what digital support is best used for; (iii) best ways of publicising mental health supports to young people; and (iv) where they would choose to get information about mental health support. Questions were a mix of forced choice and free text. Participants could opt to take part in a follow‐up interview. Results: Surveys were completed by 1471 participants; two respondents participated in an interview. A total of 641 participants had used digital support before (44%). The most used forms of digital support were websites (n = 324) and watching videos (n = 260), although these were not necessarily rated as the most helpful. Alternatives that people most wanted to try were podcasts and phone or video consultations with a counsellor or therapist. Drawbacks of digital support included privacy concerns, technical issues, lack of quality and motivation requirements. Benefits included ease of access, anonymity and a non‐threatening starting point. Conclusions: Digital support has a place in mental health care, but strong sentiment was expressed in favour of real‐life support. It may also be worth investing in more innovative types of digital support such as online performing arts and podcasts. Introduction: It is now widely recognised that engaging consumers in research activities can enhance the quality, equity and relevance of the research. Much of the commentary about consumer engagement in research focuses on research processes and implementation, rather than dissemination in conference settings. This article offers reflections and learnings from consumers, researchers and conference organisers on the 12th Health Services Research Conference, a biennial conference hosted by the Health Services Research Association of Australia and New Zealand (HSRAANZ). Method: We were awarded funds via a competitive application process by Bellberry Limited, a national not‐for‐profit agency with a focus on improving research quality, to incorporate consumer engagement strategies in conference processes and evaluate their impact. Findings: Strategies included consumer scholarships, a buddy system, designated quiet space and consumer session co‐chairs; the reflections explored in this paper were collected in the funded, independent evaluation. Our insights suggest a need for more structured consumer involvement in conference planning and design, as well as the development of specific engagement strategies. Conclusion: To move toward active partnership in scientific conference settings, our experience reinforces the need to engage consumers as members in designing and conducting research and in presenting research and planning conference content and processes. Ophthalmology education in medical school has historically neglected the impact of autonomous motivation on student learning and wellbeing. This study aimed to understand ophthalmology educators' consideration and application of student motivation in ophthalmology medical education. Lead ophthalmology educators from Australian and New Zealand medical schools participated in an online semi-structured in-depth interview. Interview transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis. Codes were generated and aligned into overarching themes. Six educators participated in the study. Five main themes arose from the transcripts: the lack of explicit consideration of student motivation, implicit consideration of motivation in curriculum design and in teaching practices, the impact of innovation on motivation and the relationship between teacher and student motivation. Participants also commented on trends in ophthalmology education including generalists' confidence in managing ophthalmic disease, the role of fundoscopy in medical education and time pressure on ophthalmology in medical schools. There has only been an implicit instead of explicit consideration of motivation in ophthalmology education in medical school, which leaves an unfulfilled potential for teaching practices to impact the affective along with cognitive and metacognitive aspects of learning. Lower limb robotic exoskeletons can assist movement, however, clinical uptake in neurorehabilitation is limited. The views and experiences of clinicians are pivotal to the successful clinical implementation of emerging technologies. This study investigates therapist perspectives of the clinical use and future role of this technology in neurorehabilitation. Australian and New Zealand-based therapists with lower limb exoskeleton experience were recruited to complete an online survey and semi-structured interview. Survey data were transposed into tables and interviews transcribed verbatim. Qualitative data collection and analysis were guided by qualitative content analysis and interview data were thematically analysed. Five participants revealed that the use of exoskeletons to deliver therapy involves the interplay of human elements – experiences and perspectives of use, and mechanical elements – the device itself. Two overarching themes emerged: the "journey", with subthemes of clinical reasoning and user experience; and the "vehicle" with design features and cost as subthemes, to explore the question "Are we there yet?" Therapists expressed positive and negative perspectives from their experiences with exoskeletons, giving suggestions for design features, marketing input, and cost to enhance future use. Therapists are optimistic that this journey will see lower limb exoskeletons integral to rehabilitation service delivery. Further innovation of design features, marketing, and cost are needed to enhance ongoing development and integration. Routine clinical implementation of lower limb exoskeletons is unlikely at this time in Australia and New Zealand. Research into the use of bereavement photography is limited and the experiences of volunteer photographers remains understudied. For families with perinatal loss, bereavement photography allows for lasting mementos of a child and facilitates the maintenance of continuing bonds. This study investigated bereavement photographers' reasons for volunteering, factors predicting their compassion satisfaction, and the support and retention of volunteer photographers. Utilizing a mixed methods design, 141 Australian and New Zealand volunteer bereavement photographers completed the Volunteer Motivation Inventory. The strongest motivators for volunteering related to Values, Reciprocity and Recognition. The results concur with other research showing altruistic motivation has the greatest influence on becoming a volunteer in end of life services. Moderate to high levels of Compassion Satisfaction were found on the Professional Quality of Life Scale Version 5. Support from the volunteering organization and a higher number of photography sessions with families predicted higher Compassion Satisfaction. Additionally, 31 photographers participated in semi-structured interviews. Motivators for volunteering identified by the thematic analysis were: Giving Back, Being Appreciated, Healing Past Grief, and Satisfaction with the Organization. Overall, the findings suggested that providing sensitive supportive care, experiencing positive interactions with families, feeling supported, and having a sense of purpose led to higher levels of CS. We investigated mean‐level changes in social dominance orientation (SDO) and right‐wing authoritarianism (RWA) during (vs before) New Zealand's nationwide coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) lockdown at a time when New Zealand was led by a left‐leaning government. The number of participants in the study ranged from (Ns = 25,065–24,653). Using propensity score matching to approximate experimental conditions, results show that both ideological motivations decreased slightly during the lockdown but rebounded after restrictions were removed several months later. We also tested whether the lockdown differentially moderated the associations SDO and RWA had with institutional attitudes. Lockdown conditions exacerbated the negative association between SDO and government satistfaction but attenuated the negative association between RWA and government satisfaction. Similar patterns emerged for trust in police and politicians but not trust in science. Although SDO and RWA fluctuated in similar directions during New Zealand's nationwide lockdown, our results indicate that people high in RWA may become more supportive of the government and police under such conditions—even in countries with a left‐leaning political leader helming the pandemic response. Measures such as education, incentives, and regulations are used to change people's behaviour and thereby achieve policy objectives. Understanding and predicting the willingness of people to change their behaviour in response to a policy measure is critical in assessing its likely effectiveness. We apply a dual-process framework of adoption proposed by Bagozzi (2006a, b) that distinguishes between goal setting and goal striving to predict urban trapping of rats. We employ 'involvement', a measure of motivation from the field of marketing, to operationalise two key variables in the dual-process model: goal desire and behavioural desire. We show how the dual-process model predicts urban residents' trapping behaviour and discuss the implications of the model for efforts to promote rat trapping by public agencies. The Baby Care Questionnaire (BCQ) is an established ordinal measure of parenting beliefs about infant care, which includes structure and attunement scales. Rasch analysis is a powerful method to examine and improve psychometric properties of ordinal scales. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties and improve precision of the structure and attunement scales of the BCQ using Rasch methodology. A Partial Credit Rasch model was applied to a sample of 450 mothers from the United Kingdom (n = 225) and New Zealand (n = 225) who completed the BCQ. Initial analyses indicated acceptable reliability of the structure and attunement scales of the BCQ, but some items showed misfit to the Rasch model associated with local dependency issues in both scales. After combining locally dependent items into testlets, both scales of the BCQ met expectations of the unidimensional Rasch model and demonstrated adequate and strong reliability and invariance across countries and person factors such as participants' age and their baby's sex. This permitted the generation of conversion algorithms to transform ordinal scores into interval data to enhance the precision of both scales of the BCQ. In conclusion, using Rasch methodology, this study demonstrated robust psychometric properties of the structure and attunement scales of the BCQ after minor modifications. The ordinal-to-interval conversion tables published here can be used to further enhance the precision of the structure and attunement scales of the BCQ without changing their original response format. These findings contribute to the enhancement of precision in measuring parenting beliefs about infant care. Extant research on students' feedback conceptions has reported effects on performance, but the relationship of feedback conceptions to important motivational factors is not empirically evidenced. This study fills this gap by providing empirical data about students' conceptions of feedback in relation to their motivational beliefs and achievement goals. Measurement and structural modelling analyses were based on undergraduate student data from New Zealand domestic (n = 832) and Chinese (People's Republic of China, PRC) international students (n = 504) in New Zealand universities. Based on cross-ethnic invariant measurement models of conceptions of feedback, motivational beliefs, and achievement goals, a structural equation model uncovered links between feedback conceptions, motivational beliefs, and achievement goals. Specifically, feedback conceptions believing in actively using feedback and the value of teacher comments significantly promoted self-efficacy and task value beliefs, as well as mastery and performance-approach goals. In contrast, maladaptive feedback perceptions (i.e., feedback is ignored or used for judging performance against external standards or relative to others) had a minimal-to-negative impact on motivational beliefs and triggered stronger performance-avoidance goals. This study empirically demonstrates that conceptions of feedback support motivational beliefs and goal approaches consistent with previous claims concerning their self-regulatory role. Objective: To investigate whether the use of a simple baseline measurement predicts venous leg ulcer healing at 12 and 24 weeks. Method: This was a secondary analysis of a cohort of four randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of treatments adjuvant to compression. Self-reported ulcer duration, and measured ulcer length and width, to calculate estimated ulcer area, were used to obtain a Margolis index score. The score created three prognostic strata for likelihood to heal within 24 weeks, and the number of participants healed and time-to-healing were compared. Results: There were a total of 802 participants across the four RCTs—408 (50.9%) in two 12-week trials and 394 (49.1%) in two 24-week trials. The mean age of participants was 63.7±17.6 years, and 372 were female (46.4%). The Margolis index score at baseline was 0 for 320 participants (predicted normal healing); 1 for 334 participants; and 2 for 148 participants (both 1 and 2 predicted slow-to-heal). Overall, 248 (77.5%) of those participants who scored 0 at baseline healed within 24 weeks, compared with 182 (54.5%) of participants who scored 1, and 30 (20.3%) participants who scored 2. The median time-to-healing was 40 (24–62) days, 57 (35–100) days and 86.5 (56–151) days, respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.69 and 0.77, respectively, for the 12 and 24 week trials. Conclusion: A simple baseline index identifies participants with normal or slow-to-heal wounds and could be used to demonstrate prognostic balance between treatment groups in trials. This approach could also be used in clinical practice to assist with managing expectations and for early identification of patients who may best benefit from adjuvant treatments. Improving equity in women's health requires gender-specific and empowering approaches. However, health programs often disempower women by adopting a 'one-size-fits-all' approach that emphasizes diet, exercise and weight loss over other important aspects like sleep and mental wellbeing. This article reports on the design of Next Level Health (NLH), a program that aims to empower women through developing a wide range of health behaviors to support their holistic wellbeing. NLH is grounded by ethics, theory and evidence to support women to make achievable, sustainable changes that are relevant to their everyday lives. Women utilized the NLH framework to develop an integrative health routine across six domains: physical activity, sleep, nutrition, eating behavior, self-care and stress management. The framework guided them to set small, incremental goals that were adaptive to their needs and built from their existing circumstances. Participants reflected on their progress with a facilitator during monthly meetings, accessed a social media support page and received monthly text messages. Health programs remain an essential approach to improving women's health alongside community- and policy-level strategies. The development of NLH exemplifies how evidence may partner with modern health promotion values to inform relevant and ethical program design for women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This study explored demographics and three characteristics of registered dietitians—optimism, perfectionism, and weight bias and whether they affect three components of dietetics practice—dietetics assessment, dietetics recommendations, and dietitian's perception of the client's success. Methods: A self‐administered questionnaire was completed by 92 registered dietitians and student dietitians in New Zealand to assess explicit weight bias. [Correction added on 27 January 2023, after first online publication: in the preceding sentence, '109 registered dietitians' has been updated to '92 registered dietitians'.] Participants were randomised to receive a case study for a condition unrelated to weight accompanied by a photo of a woman with either a smaller or a larger body. Participants then assessed the client based on data provided, provided recommendations, and rated their perception of the client. Results: Mean (±SD) scores indicated mild fatphobia (2.63±0.39) in participating dietitians. Dietitians presented with the photo of a larger client assessed the client to have lower health and were more likely to provide unsolicited weight management recommendations. Additionally, dietitians rated the larger client as less receptive and motivated, and less likely to understand the recommendations adequately, with a lower ability to comply with and maintain these recommendations. Conclusions: Dietitians and student dietitians in New Zealand may practise in a manner that could be perceived as influenced by negative implicit weight bias, despite the explicit fatphobia scale scores assessing only mild fatphobia. Further research examining the extent of the problem in New Zealand, how it impacts client outcomes, and possible solutions are required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Childhood cancer survivors are vulnerable to long-term treatment-related health conditions, which can lead to poor quality of life. Little data exist on the overall health of long-term Australian and New Zealand childhood cancer survivors or on survivors' motivations for attending survivorship clinics. Methods This study administers a cross-sectional questionnaire to long-term survivors ≥5 years from their primary diagnosis. We compared participant-reported number of late effects by a cancer diagnosis, and identified clinical (eg, treatment) and demographic (eg, age) factors that were associated with late effects burden and engagement in cancer survivorship care. Results A total of 634 participants completed questionnaires (48% male, mean age = 21.7 years). Most participants (79%) reported at least one cancer-related late effect, most commonly fatigue (40%) and memory/learning difficulties (34%). Brain tumor survivors reported a higher total number of late effects than survivors with other diagnoses (mean = 5.7 vs. 3.2, P  < .001). Participants' most commonly reported motivators for engaging in care were to understand problems that may occur later in life because of their cancer and/or treatment (98.5%) and to get reassurance about one's health (97.4%). The proportion of survivors endorsing each motivating factor was similar across cancer diagnoses, with the exception of learning more about insurance and pensions (highest in brain tumor survivors = 80%). In multivariable analyses, survivors were more likely to report being engaged in survivorship care if they were younger (P  < .001), less time had elapsed since their diagnosis (P  < .001), or they reported a higher number of motivating factors (P  = .016). Conclusion Survivors report a range of health problems decades after treatment completion. Understanding the burden of late effects, and motivators for seeking survivorship care to manage these health problems, is important for ensuring that tailored interventions or services are available to meet the needs of this growing population and to design effective models of survivorship care. This article explores the motivation of non-Māori learners of te reo Māori as an L2. Inspired by calls for contextualised investigations of the L2 motivation of learners of LOTEs, our study utilises an ethical self-formation framework [Hennig, B. B. 2010a. "Language Learning and the Self: Exploring Hong Kong Students' Motivation for Learning German as a Third Language from a Foucauldian Ethical Perspective." Doctoral diss., University of Hong Kong. https://bibliography.lib.eduhk.hk/tc/bibs/fdb173c8] to analyse data from semi-structured interviews with 10 learners enrolled in a voluntary course of Māori language for staff at a New Zealand university. Through a discussion of findings associated with three of the framework's axes (ethical substance, mode of subjection and telos), we offer an interpretation of the learners' L2 motivation as linked to a self-directed process aimed at achieving an improved version of themselves, and of this process of self-formation as rooted in personal belief systems about the value of te reo Māori in their personal and professional lives and for New Zealand as a whole. Overall, the ethical self-formation framework emerges as a useful lens for highlighting the links between the learners' L2 motivation, their personal connections with te reo Māori and their sense of membership in an ideal collective New Zealand identity, and for exploring dimensions of the convergence of the personal and the societal in L2 motivation. Egg donation in New Zealand is identity-release, with donor-conceived individuals having the right to access donors' identifying information at the age of 18. It also allows donors and previously unknown recipients to meet prior to donation. Further, donation is altruistic, although reimbursement of costs is possible. In our previous paper we explored the motivations of 21 egg donors in this context and reported that they are motivated to donate as an act of personal gift-giving to recipients who may become known to them through donation, and that they do not want to be compensated for this financially. In this paper, drawing on in-depth interviews, we report on donors' experiences of the donation process and subsequent to donation. Donors understood their donations to be a significant act, both for the recipients and their families, but also for themselves, particularly given the multiple sacrifices which they willingly made. Donors wished for their gift and their role to be valued and acknowledged through being appreciated, informed, involved and supported by recipients and clinics before, during and after their donations. These findings have implications for clinical practice and care, offering insight into how best to support donors prior and subsequent to donation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prior to the emergence of the Omicron variant, we found large regional differences (ƞ2 = 0.19) in the frequency of wearing face masks in New Zealand even though the strength of people's motivation to wear face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19 was similar across regions. These differences were associated with regional differences (as measured by case numbers) in the risk of COVID-19 infection. The emergence of Omicron and its spread throughout New Zealand in conjunction with the cessation of lockdowns offered the opportunity to test whether regional differences in the frequency of mask wearing disappeared once the risk of COVID-19 infection became uniform across the country. It also created an opportunity to investigate differences in people's behaviour with respect to wearing masks in private and in public. The results confirmed that regional differences in the frequency of mask wearing disappeared once Omicron spread through the country. Tourism-related non-profit organizations rely on donations and financial support from private individuals, frequently through membership subscription schemes. This research investigates what motivates membership in a tourism-based conservation context to examine the transferability of existing research in the arts and cultural context. A post-positivist quantitative online survey with qualitative elements was distributed to members of Zealandia, an urban eco-sanctuary in New Zealand. Results identify membership motivation as a multi-dimensional construct, with altruistic motivations related to the cause at its core and inextricably linked with hedonic motivations representing positive on-site experiences. Egoistic motivations were identified as a supplementary factor only in that free entry as a demonstrable benefit allows access to the experience. The organization itself provided a link between cause and those who value it, positioning itself as a point of belonging and connection that mediates the otherwise intangible connection between people and environment. Through this, members receive a variety of emotional, familial and demonstrable benefits in relation to nature itself, a sense of belonging and contribution, and access to observe the impact of their membership. In doing so, this research illustrates the relevance of organization and cause in encouraging local membership behaviour and continuing support for natural conservation tourist attractions. Nursing is becoming an increasingly stressful occupation, identified by high rates of burnout, compounded by a worldwide nursing shortage. Differing solutions to combat burnout have not provided long-term positive outcomes. This research explored emergency nurses' perspectives and experiences of one potential solution, known as joy in work , or professional joy. A qualitative, descriptive design was used to conduct semi-structured interviews with six registered nurses from two New Zealand emergency departments. Thematic analysis techniques were used. Professional joy was frequently experienced, despite the difficulties faced in the emergency environment. Joy was identified as being like a spark which provided an uplift. The experience of joy positively impacted the nurse, and beyond, and potentially provided a buffer that assisted with mitigating the daily challenges. Recalling or sharing experiences of joy evoked a sense of wellbeing in the nurse, which in turn provided motivation to keep on nursing. This research identified a link between nurse wellbeing, joy and the importance of a healthy work environment. While this study was relatively small, the findings highlight the significant positive impact the experience of joy had on these nurses. The underlying relationship dynamics leading to authority gradients between frontline rail workers are being overlooked despite rail incident investigation reports pointing to the contrary. The aim of this study was to understand how the power disparities across multidisciplinary rail frontline workers can lead to authority gradients from the perspective of network controllers—the group at the apex of the operational hierarchy. A scenario generation technique was used to scaffold interviews with 55 rail network controllers from eight organisations across Australasia and identify how they perceived risky situations with all data thematically analysed. Authority gradient generation was found to be defined through: (1) motivations for network controllers to retain a position of authoritarianism toward train crew and track workers; and (2) behaviours that reinforced a power differential by curtailing their empowerment. Network controllers feared the probability and consequence of error and mistrusted in the capabilities of train crew and track workers, questioning their honesty, levels of competence, and believing they wanted to inherently cut corners. These motivations created a contemptuous regard that bred hostility and disparaging language, and engendered intimidation tactics where network controllers acted punitively and pressured train crew and track workers into compliance. The results from the scenarios point to perceptions of risk as the catalyst for fear and mistrust, with heightened perceptions of risk associated with increased vigilance and hostility across groups. Introduction. Patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) commonly present in primary care. Increasing physical activity reduces symptoms and severity of OSA. Low motivation is a barrier to physical activity in adults with OSA. Aim. To investigate the feasibility and acceptability of an exercise and personalised text messaging programme to enhance motivation and support physical activity behaviour change in adults with OSA. Methods. Participants were recruited from the local Sleep Clinic. Exclusion criteria were unstable angina, and/or poorly controlled hypertension. The intervention comprised three groups, who received either individual exercise prescription, personalised text messages or both over a 24-week period. Participants were allocated to one of the three groups. The primary outcome was feasibility of study design including participant recruitment and retention. Secondary outcomes were a change in 6-min walk distance and exercise self-efficacy over time. Results. Thirty participants were recruited, 17 male and 13 female, with a mean age of 54.6 years. The study design appears feasible and the outcome measures used were acceptable to participants. Recruitment and retention rates were lower than anticipated. A trend towards increased functional exercise capacity was identified in all three groups, along with a corresponding increase in exercise selfefficacy over time. Discussion. Exercise and personalised text messaging both appear to offer an acceptable and feasible means to increase physical activity in adults with OSA. Organisations expect that users will fully incorporate information technology (IT) into their work to achieve the benefit of IT deployment in the post-adoption period. Evidence from previous research shows that these benefits are not determined by the initial use of technology but rather through usage behaviours with which individuals maximise the potential of the technology known as infusion behaviours. Drawing on IT identity and psychological empowerment theories, this study examines the influence of users' IT identity and empowerment on IS infusion behaviours and three qualitatively distinct usage behaviours associated with infusion: extended use, integrated use, and emergent use. A total of 344 survey responses were collected from enterprise systems users in New Zealand. The results suggest that IT identity and empowerment shape IS infusion and its three distinct associated behaviours. This study offers a deeper understanding of how strong identification with IT and psychological empowerment toward the use of IT in work routines are important drivers of IS infusion behaviours in organisations. Crisis intervention services for people experiencing psychological distress and suicidal ideation are frequently described by the people accessing them as failing to meet their needs. This paper reports a prominent finding from a realist evaluation of Taranaki Retreat—a charitable, non‐clinical organisation in New Zealand, which offers free respite for people experiencing acute distress. Using qualitative methods, the study aimed to move beyond vague notions regarding the helpfulness of respite, to a deeper understanding of the contextual factors and mechanisms which generate outcomes for such an intervention. Participant observation, focus groups with staff, semi‐structured interviews with service users, and analysis of service users' case notes were conducted over a six‐month period in 2018. The most prominent finding from the study related to 'genuine care'—care which is interpreted by the recipient as being motivated by a genuine desire to help. We present this finding as to the central mechanism in a wider programme theory developed through the realist evaluation study. We also present five key features of the care participants were offered at Taranaki Retreat which contributed to their common interpretation regarding the motivations behind this care. Upon considering the centrality of this mechanism we conclude that, in designing crisis interventions, greater consideration should be given to how the intervention can demonstrate genuine care. Having highlighted the ways in which the structure of charitable organisations appears conducive for interpretations of genuine care, we further conclude that the provision of comprehensive crisis intervention by charitable organisations should be further explored and supported. Engaging and motivating learners to successfully complete their studies are crucial elements for the success of distance educators around the world. The researchers' AIM newsletter, which is formatted in accordance with motivational learning theory, has been delivered to first-year learners in economics at Open Polytechnic of New Zealand from 2010 to 2022. AIM is an acronym for Academic content, Information for the course, and Motivation--three critical elements that are required to meet the challenges of effective online course facilitation. This paper uses Keller's IMMS to evaluate the learner's perspective of the AIM newsletter. Results show that learners consider AIM newsletter attracts the learner's attention and provides relevant links between theory and current world examples, linking the learner's own experiences, increasing their confidence in the course, and providing overall satisfaction with the learning experience. Objective: Psychotherapy for anorexia nervosa (AN) is complex and multifaceted, with little known about likely effective components of treatments. The current study explored the spoken content of specialist supportive clinical management (SSCM) for AN, a treatment with evidence of effectiveness in several randomized clinical trials. Method: One hundred seventy‐eight therapy sessions constituting all ten therapist–patient dyads of those who completed SSCM treatment in the original clinical trial of SSCM, were transcribed verbatim. Themes were developed and content analyzed using qualitative content analysis of complete therapy sessions by four analysts, with 10% of sessions cocoded for interrater agreement. Results: Over three quarters of session content was within the clinical management theme, the largest subtheme relating to normalizing eating, followed by weight, mechanics of SSCM, and encouragement of self‐care. Approximately 20% of total content was in the supportive psychotherapy theme, half about relationships. The relative proportion of clinical management content remained high, decreasing during the last five sessions. Those achieving good outcome did not have a lower ratio of clinical management to supportive psychotherapy content. Discussion: The current study revealed strong clinical management focus on core symptoms of AN—normalization of eating and weight gain—throughout SSCM for AN. Public Significance: Six clinical trials have found SSCM to be effective in treating AN. Content of SSCM sessions in the original trial was classified using qualitative content analysis. Study findings revealed strong clinical management focus on core AN symptoms—normalization of eating and weight gain—throughout SSCM, with the ratio of clinical management to supportive psychotherapy greater for those with a good outcome. This study examines the unique effects of hospitality employees' perceptions of two types of motivation factors (intrinsic and extrinsic-hygiene) on their turnover intention and service-oriented organizational citizenship behavior (SOCB). Further, the study investigates the moderating role of power distance on the impacts of these two types of employee motivation factors. A series of hierarchical multiple regression analyses were performed to test the research hypotheses using the responses to a structured survey of 203 hospitality employees in New Zealand. The findings demonstrate that hospitality employees' perception of extrinsic-hygiene motivation factors has a stronger influence on their turnover intention while their perception of intrinsic motivation factors has a more salient impact on the exhibition of SOCB. The moderating role of power distance was found in the effect of hygiene factors on turnover intention (stronger in low power distance), that of intrinsic factors on turnover intention (stronger in low power distance), and that of intrinsic factors on SOCB (stronger in high power distance). In this paper, we explored the influence of sources of motivation on young women's career choice in secondary schools in New Zealand and their interest in construction-related careers. We employed internal sources of motivation – Maslow's hierarchy of needs; and external sources of motivations – individual in close association with young women and social media to achieve this aim. These factors were supported by past research in career choice and the construction industry. A questionnaire survey was carried out on young women in a secondary school in Auckland, New Zealand and statistical analysis using ANOVA and Pearson's correlation was used to ascertain correlations and their level of significance. We found that mothers and self-actualization needs were the most important external and internal sources of motivation for young women to make a career choice. Concerning the construction-related careers investigated, we found that the perception of their friends, information circulated on social media and being safe (Security needs) influenced the young women's interest in pursuing a quantity surveying career. On the other hand, the desire to be socially accepted (Social needs) deterred young women from choosing construction management as a future career. The result of this study showed that young women's perception of construction-related careers depends on the career itself. It suggests that there may be careers that will be perceived positively by young women and therefore, should be explored. The results of this study are essential as they provide insights into a current issue for the construction industry. Purpose: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a recognised adverse consequence of cancer and its treatment. This qualitative sub-study was undertaken as part of a larger prospective longitudinal study in which recruitment and retention were very high. The aim was to gain an understanding of participants reasons for ongoing participation, at a time of heightened stress related to a new diagnosis of aggressive lymphoma and the rapid commencement of treatment.Methods: This qualitative descriptive sub-study included semi-structured interviews with twenty-seven participants. Interviews were recorded and transcribed, and a thematic descriptive approach was used to analyse the data.Results: Twenty-seven interviews were completed. Four themes described participants' motivation to consent and continue with the study. These included ease of participation, personal values, self-help and valued additional support. Participants understood the requirements of the study, and data collection occurring during hospital visits was perceived to be convenient. Interviewees confirmed that the study fulfilled desire to "help others". Although testing was intense and challenging, it provided feedback on current functioning and was described by some as a "welcome distraction" and enjoyable. Finally, interaction with the study nurse was perceived as an additional beneficial oversight and support.Conclusion: Achieving sustained participation in a prospective study with patients undergoing treatment is facilitated where the logistical demands of data collection are minimised; a clinician from the service is included; the tasks are seen as inherently interesting; and care is taken to provide empathic support throughout.Trial Registration: Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry ACTRN12619001649101. It is widely acknowledged that the rate of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) reported by men who sexually offend is elevated relative to the general population. The idea of a "sexually abused-sexual abuser" (SA-SA) cycle is one possible explanation for the relationship between CSA and subsequent sexual offending. The current study explored why sexually abused men went on to sexually offend, through qualitative interviews with 41 SA-SAs attending a community treatment programme in New Zealand. Most of them gave externalising reasons for offending (including anger and revenge towards others, and deviant arousal). There was an even split between those who did/did not see a relationship between their own victimisation and their offending. Of those who perceived this connection, sexualisation, externalisation, and normalisation were themes underlying their motivation to offend. Individuals around the world believe global climate change is a major threat, with media attention and polling suggesting young adults may decide to go childfree as a result. Yet, there is limited research on the link between environmental concern and reproductive attitudes. The purpose of this research was to explore how climate change-related concerns affect reproductive attitudes and motivations to remain childfree. Two studies were conducted: study 1 consisted of a content analysis of reader comments on articles discussing going childfree in response to climate change, and study 2 featured semi-structured interviews conducted in New Zealand and the USA. The impact of future children on the planet, in the context of overpopulation and overconsumption, was a major theme in both studies. Perspectives of doom and hope emerged simultaneously, indicating how climate anxiety influences reproductive attitudes. Study findings point at implications for public policy makers regarding this largely neglected perspective on climate change adaptation and mitigation and potential psychological and societal effects. Objective: To use secondary data from the Taking Charge after Stroke study to explore mechanisms for the positive effect of the Take Charge intervention on physical health, advanced activities of daily living and independence for people after acute stroke. Design: An open, parallel-group, randomised trial with two active and one control intervention and blinded outcome assessment. Setting: Community. Participants: Adults (n = 400) discharged to community, non-institutional living following acute stroke. Interventions: One, two, or zero sessions of the Take Charge intervention, a self-directed rehabilitation intervention which helps a person with stroke take charge of their own recovery. Measures: Twelve months after stroke: Mood (Patient Health Questionnaire-2, Mental Component Summary of the Short Form 36); 'ability to Take Charge' using a novel measure, the Autonomy-Mastery-Purpose-Connectedness (AMP-C) score; activation (Patient Activation Measure); body mass index (BMI), blood pressure (BP) and medication adherence (Medication Adherence Questionnaire). Results: Follow-up was near-complete (388/390 (99.5%)) of survivors at 12 months. Mean age (SD) was 72.0 (12.5) years. There were no significant differences in mood, activation, 'ability to Take Charge', medication adherence, BMI or BP by randomised group at 12 months. There was a significant positive association between baseline AMP-C scores and 12-month outcome for control participants (1.73 (95%CI 0.90 to 2.56)) but not for the Take Charge groups combined (0.34 (95%CI −0.17 to 0.85)). Conclusion: The mechanism by which Take Charge is effective remains uncertain. However, our findings support a hypothesis that baseline variability in motivation, mastery and connectedness may be modified by the Take Charge intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Working holidays have emerged as an alternative form of travel that provides the opportunity to work to subsidise a holiday. Existing studies are limited, particularly those focused on working holidaymakers from Latin America. Utilising the push-pull framework, this study explores the motivations of Latin Americans undertaking working holidays and the reasons for selecting New Zealand as a working holiday destination. Thematic analysis of the data collected from sixteen Latin American working holidaymakers revealed six push factors for undertaking a working holiday and five pull factors for selecting New Zealand as their destination. The findings from this study contribute to current understandings of working holidaymakers, particularly from Latin America. While the results support earlier studies of working holidays, Latin American working holidaymakers' interest in exploring business opportunities in destinations is a novel study finding. Objective: As a follow‐up to the first national survey of advance care planning uptake in New Zealand, which demonstrated a low level of plan completion, this study seeks to better understand the motivators and barriers associated with uptake. Methods: Using a qualitative approach and a purposeful sampling method, nine interviewees participated in semi‐structured interviews exploring in further depth their knowledge, attitudes and activities in relation to planning for end‐of‐life care. Thematic analysis was applied to the transcripts and several key themes identified. Results: The five key themes were Knowledge of Advance Care Planning; Incomplete Planning; Relational Autonomy; Focus on Family; and Still Time to Plan. Conclusion: A stepped process to encourage planning uptake is suggested, with legal and financial steps preceding the making of more personal values–based decisions salient to a serious diagnosis. To explore the perceptions and experiences of caregivers of preschool children with weight issues referred from New Zealand's preschool check (the B4 School Check) to a healthy lifestyle programme. Second, to understand determinants of engagement with the programme for families post referral. Semi-structured focus groups and interviews were conducted with caregivers of preschool children referred from the national preschool check (the B4 School Check) to the Whānau Pakari healthy lifestyle programme. A purposeful sampling approach ensured the opinions of Māori (New Zealand's indigenous population) and non-Māori caregivers were included. Those who engaged and did not engage with the programme were included from across Taranaki (a semi-rural region of New Zealand). Focus groups and interviews were run separately for Māori and non-Māori participants. Thematic analysis yielded one sub-theme related to caregiver perceptions of weight: societal beliefs about childhood weight, and three sub-themes related to determinants of engagement: referral experience, competing life demands, and caregiver resistance to and motivation for accepting external support. A negative referral experience to Whānau Pakari often resulted in caregivers declining to engage with the programme. Themes were similar across both Māori and non-Māori caregivers. This study confirmed that caregiver perceptions influence their acceptance and management of their child's weight issues. The experience of the referral to a healthy lifestyle programme is important for determining future engagement, and is likely to be facilitated by providing improved training and support to health professionals around discussing childhood weight issues with caregivers of young children. This study examined whether perceived barriers, benefits, and motives for physical activity differed based on allocation to 2 different types of primary-care activity-prescription programs (pedometer-based vs. time-based Green Prescription). Eighty participants from the Healthy Steps study completed a questionnaire that assessed their perceived barriers, benefits, and motives for physical activity. Factor analysis was carried out to identify common themes of barriers, benefits, and motives for physical activity. Factor scores were then used to explore between groups differences for perceived barriers, benefits, and motives based on group allocation and demographic variables. No significant differences were found in factor scores based on allocation. Demographic variables relating to the existence of chronic health conditions, weight status, and older age were found to significantly influence perceived barriers, benefits, and motives for physical activity. Findings suggest that the addition of a pedometer to the standard Green Prescription does not appear to increase perceived motives or benefits or decrease perceived barriers for physical activity in low-active older adults. Initiatives to increase the use and normalisation of te reo Māori throughout wider society in Aotearoa involve more Pākehā learners and users of te reo Māori. This study explores language motivations of Pākehā (New Zealand Europeans) who have begun learning te reo Māori as a second language through interviews with 13 Pākehā participants with varying levels of Māori language proficiency. Findings from this small-scale qualitative study indicated that some participants viewed Māori culture as a contributing factor to their concept of a national identity, inclusive of biculturalism. Furthermore, motivations to reject negatively framed colonial derived narratives about Māori, and reduce levels of cultural ignorance by Pākehā participants toward Māori, were discussed. Results of this study brought to light distinct language motivations of Pākehā compared with other second language learners of non-indigenous languages. Seeing other Pākehā learners of te reo provided participants with a sense of permission to learn, feelings of language achievability and social approval for the behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study employed a large-scale cross-sectional survey (n=443) to identify the structural relations among regulatory styles (motivations), identity changes and second language (L2) possible selves of Chinese students undertaking tertiary study in New Zealand. Three specific models were tested. Specifically, ideal L2 model revealed that integrated regulation had a substantial (positive) effect on ideal L2 self and had a small but significant indirect effect on ideal L2 self through additive identity change; ought-to L2 model showed that introjected regulation had a positive and substantial contribution to both split identity change and ought-to L2 self; and dreaded L2 self model demonstrated that external regulation had a positive and large contribution to dreaded L2 self. The models delineate the dynamic and interactive process of L2 learning development, which helps L2 learners to develop their identity and self so that they may develop an adaptive identity and a positive L2 self in their future L2 study. The necessity of developing effective and innovative primary prevention strategies is a pressing objective in stemming the harm caused by the production and consumption of child sexual exploitation material (CSEM). Digital media interventions – including search engine advertisements – hold promise as prevention tools to deflect potential users away from CSEM and redirect them to therapeutic services. This study aimed to establish an evidence base for effective advertising in this context by creating mock-up helpline advertisements and testing them in focus groups and interviews with staff and clients of New Zealand's major treatment service providers for harmful sexual behavior. Prior to testing these advertisements in situ (on online platforms), this paper reports on a foundational creative and qualitative investigation of effective advertisements – what imagery, text, and design features are most likely to succeed in diverting people away from seeking CSEM and encouraging them to reach out to a helpline? The findings of this study offer deeper understanding of the mindset, emotions, and barriers to reaching out that are experienced by onset CSEM users, as well as suitability of certain imagery and text for advertising in this context, and thereby contribute to strengthening primary prevention efforts in combatting CSEM consumption. Investor sentiment is an important aspect of behavioural finance, which provides explanation of anomalies to the asset's intrinsic values. Sentiments can easily affect individual investors. Historically, Australia is regarded as rich in resources but poor in capital, and this motivates the paper to further study and compare the effects of investor sentiment on performance returns. Aggregate and cross-sectional effects, as well as predictive regression analysis to forecast the relationships, while controlling for the macroeconomic variables, are used by employing Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) and trade volume as sentiment proxies. Contrary to some studies with aggregate stock markets, it is discovered that in the short term, investor sentiment poses a positive impact with strong predictive power on the forecast of portfolio returns but not so much in the long run, which supports the classical theories of rational investors. In both Australian and New Zealand markets, the sentiment proxies also cannot predict the returns portfolios with dividends in the long/short portfolio and book-to-market ratio long/short portfolio. Construct: The MUSIC® Inventory measures the construct of academic motivation across five factors: empowerment, usefulness, success, interest, and caring. The factors are defined in terms of the degree the student perceives that they have control over their environment, that the coursework is useful to their future, that they can succeed in the course, that the course and instructional methods are interesting, and that the teacher cares about their wellbeing and their success respectively. Background: A valid measure of medical students' academic motivation would provide medical teachers with a method for evaluating the motivational aspect of their course and provide focus for changes in teaching and learning to improve medical student engagement. While the MUSIC® Inventory structure has been validated in the tertiary setting and with several professional programs, it has not been validated with medical students. The aim of this study was to use both classical test theory and Rasch modeling to assess the reliability and confirm the structure of the five-factor model of the MUSIC® Inventory with medical students. Approach: One-hundred-fifty-two medical students completed the 26-item inventory. Descriptive statistics, internal consistency, correlations between factors, confirmatory factor analysis, and Rasch analysis using the rating scale model were performed to determine reliability and validity. Findings: The five factors showed good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha.87 –.92). Correlations between factors were moderate to high (r =.38 –.89). Confirmatory factor analysis highlighted inconsistencies in factor loadings of three of the items hypothesized to measure interest. Rasch analysis using the rating scale model showed that all items for each factor had good item fit (0.65 – 1.37). Person separation (2.28 – 2.85) and reliability (.84 –.91) scores indicated that the scales were able to differentiate different levels of respondents. Item separation (2.25 – 6.97) and reliability scores (.83 –.98) indicated that the items of the scales were being differentiated by the respondents. Conclusions: Rasch analysis indicates that the five factors of academic motivation measured by the MUSIC® Inventory account for the response patterns in data from medical students. However, while the factors of empowerment, usefulness, success, and caring showed expected reliability and validity using classical analysis, three of the interest items cross-loaded on to the usefulness factor. Possible reasons may include ambiguity of language for the items or medical students' conception of usefulness and interest.
