The purpose of this study was to provide a deeper understanding of the challenges early childhood intervention practitioners faced and their commitment to work. Data suggested that participants struggled to manage their roles and responsibilities, the lack of time, resources, and professional support, and growing workloads. In the face of these challenges; however, the majority of the early intervention practitioners reported being ‘very committed’ to their work with children with disabilities. Working long hours, always seeking ways to improve their practice, and keeping themselves abreast of new information and evidence‐based interventions were mentioned as proof of their commitment. This article concludes that as the provision of early intervention services to support early childhood inclusion becomes more prevalent, it is critical that researchers work to identify effective service delivery models and under‐used resources, including the work commitment of the teaching professionals. Popular films often depict pandemics in apocalyptic ways, temporally portraying how day by day, fear increases as a virus takes over the world. The speed of transmission, alongside the virus's seemingly unstoppable global spread, evoke a sense of being engulfed by the extraordinary, creating an experience of time characterised by feelings of intensity and fear, both on and off-screen. In contrast, the lived realities of young New Zealanders during the COVID-19 pandemic speak to a more elongated, 'empty' experience of time that lacks such intensity. Our interviews with New Zealand youth revealed their sense of time as ever-shifting, characterised occasionally by moments of fear and anxiety, but much more so by long hours of boredom and disturbing lack of structure, particularly during lockdowns. This paper draws on Bakhtin's notion of the chronotope, alongside Bergson's insights into lived experiences of time and Deleuze's Cinema books, to compare the emotional temporalities of two leading science fiction pandemic films, 'Contagion' and 'Outbreak', and a range of popular zombie movies, to young New Zealanders' lived experiences of multiple COVID-19 lockdowns. We consider how New Zealand youth (in our interviews, but also on social media) narrate their lived experiences of COVID-19 by drawing upon an 'imaginative repertoire' made up of sci fi films, zombie references and moral ideas of the self, which can help us to better understand how temporality is reshaped during a pandemic, particularly for young people. Train drivers work long hours on 24 h schedules and many factors impact their fatigue risk at work, creating a clear imperative for good rostering practice. Adopting a systems approach, this study investigated the relationship between multiple interrelated factors (train drivers' schedule, sleep, wellbeing, and fatigue) and the perceived influence of these factors on train driving performance and safety using an online survey distributed in Australia and New Zealand. In addition to demographics and work schedule, passenger and freight train drivers (n = 751) answered questions about: (1) Sleep duration; (2) wellbeing, including physical and mental health, the extent to which shiftwork causes sleep, social, domestic, and work problems, and (3) the extent to which ten fatigue, health and wellbeing factors in the work and home environment negatively impact their driving performance. The key factor that emerged from analyses, with the largest and most consistent negative effects (and controlling for other factors) was schedule irregularity. Approved rosters were ranked as having the most important impact on day-to-day driving performance, followed by physical and mental health, and outside work factors. Results also suggested that schedule irregularity may amplify the negative impacts of the roster, impaired physical and mental health, and outside work factors on driving performance. As shift variability and schedule irregularity are often poorly represented in existing industry guidance, these results provide evidence for increased reflection on current fatigue management guidelines for train drivers and suggest a need for greater focus on schedule irregularity through the lens of a systems approach. Background: Many studies have looked at sources of stress in psychiatrists, yet the role played by different factors in the causation of burnout in psychiatrists remains unclear. We had two aims, first, to develop a predictive model for the onset of burnout. Second, we aimed to study the differences in the perception of what caused stress between psychiatrists who rated themselves high on Emotional Exhaustion compared to those who rated themselves as low on Emotional Exhaustion.Methods: A previously described questionnaire that identified stressors relevant to consultant psychiatrists was mailed out to 426 psychiatrists, with 240 replies. Scores on the Emotional Exhaustion dimension of the Maslach Burnout Inventory were available for 131 respondents.Results: Based on an earlier literature review, the Sources of Stress Questionnaire (SOS-Q) used in the study had 45 factors, categorized into predisposing, precipitating, perpetuating and protective factors for burnout in psychiatrists. Of these, factor analysis identified 11 non-correlated factors which were used in the final analysis of this study. Four factors emerged as associated with burnout in psychiatrists in New Zealand: too much work; working long hours; an aggressive administrative environment; and lacking support from management. Two factors negatively correlated with Emotional Exhaustion were a high level of job satisfaction and/or enjoyment, and low pay compared to other countries.Conclusions: Most factors associated with burnout are preventable and can be managed jointly between psychiatrists and administrators. Recognising the increasingly vital yet precarious role that Asian migrant care workers (MCWs) play within Aotearoa New Zealand (Aotearoa) health system, this paper delves into the qualitative exploration of the experiences encountered by Japanese MCWs amidst everyday challenges and injustices during the COVID-19 pandemic in Aotearoa. Gaining in-depth understanding of their lived experiences, encompassing challenges inherent in their care roles and racial/social injustices outside their care roles, holds the potential to establish a sustainable care workforce capable of delivering quality health care while also attracting and retaining MCWs in Aotearoa. Employing the perspective of Critical Migration Studies (CMS), this pilot study explores the hidden costs of care provision, drawing insights from in-depth interviews conducted with 10 Japanese MCWs in late 2022 and early 2023, and presents mixed findings. The data indicates intersecting challenges in their work, including unfair treatment, linguicism, labour market inequality and various forms of social injustices. However, most Japanese MCW participants had developed robust resilience in dealing with these perceived challenges and injustices in Aotearoa, stemming from their previous experiences of gender, cultural and other forms of oppression in their workplace and everyday life in Japan. Background The importance of doctors' working hours has gained significant attention with evidence suggesting long hours and fatigue may compromise the safety and wellbeing of both patients and doctors. This study aims to quantify the working hours of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists ( RANZCOG) specialist trainees in order to better inform discussions of working hours and safety within our region. Methods An anonymous, online survey of RANZCOG trainees was conducted. Demographic data were collected. The primary outcomes were: hours per week at work and hours per week on-call. Secondary outcomes included the frequency of long days (>12 h) and 24-h shifts, time spent studying, staff shortages and opinions regarding current rostering. Results Response rate was 49.5% ( n = 259). Full-time trainees worked an average of 53.1 ± 10.0 h/week, with 11.6% working on-call. Long-day shifts were reported by 85.8% of respondents, with an average length of 14.2 h. Fifteen percent reported working 24-h shifts, with a median duration of uninterrupted sleep during this shift being 1-2 h. Trainees in New Zealand worked 7.0 h/week more than Australian trainees ( P ≤0.001), but reported less on-call ( P = 0.021). Trainees in Western Australia were more likely to work on-call ( P ≤0.001) and 24-h shifts ( P ≤0.001). Conclusion While 53.1 h/week at work is similar to the average Australian hospital doctor, high rates of long days and 24-h shifts with minimal sleep were reported by RANZCOG trainees in this survey. A major issue in international business is why many International Joint Ventures (IJVs) fail to live up to partners' expectations. Research into why IJVs underperform centres on differences between partners' equity, resources, technical knowledge and cultural values, but seldom internal sensemaking conflicts. We address this research gap: specifically, the sense managers make of their own and their partner managers' perceived performance in relation to strategy practices, and the effects of sensemaking upon collaboration. Some IJV studies examine outright organizational failure, but we focus on a common situation where partner firms' expectations about each other's performance are not met. Our case is a major Sino-New Zealand dairy IJV in a Limbo-like state of severe sensemaking discrepancy. Here, managers struggled to perform strategy effectively in a context of mutual misunderstanding and profound miscommunication, rooted in sensemaking differences. Using a strategy practice lens, we explore how this sensemaking discrepancy arose over organizational identity, learning and experience, strategizing, communication and trust. This eroded meaningful cooperation over strategy, leading to disjointed collaboration: a new concept capturing a state of compromised engagement, where the IJV continued operationally, but collaboration became increasingly difficult. We provide a theoretical framework to help understand sensemaking discrepancy in IJVs, based on a reconceptualization of sensemaking discrepancy in terms of own and others' expected and perceived performance. We analysed the responses of 995 Year 13 students from across Aotearoa New Zealand regarding the payment of minimum and living wages. In analysing their Likert scale ratings and written responses, we found the majority of these young adults to be clearly in favour of the living wage being adopted universally. Their justifications for this stance centred around themes of survival, justice, wellbeing, economic balance and reciprocity. We assert that the voices of rangatahi have been missing in the consecutive government reviews of the minimum wage, and that listening to these voices will enhance policymaking in this area. Aims: Investigated the experiences of Māori (the Indigenous peoples of Aotearoa, New Zealand) patients and whānau (extended family network) engaging with acute hospital inpatient services and their priorities for a Māori-centred model of relational care. Design: A qualitative Māori-centred research design using a Thought Space Wānanga (learning through in-depth group discussion, deliberation and consideration) approach. Methods: Two wānanga were conducted between May 2022 and June 2022, with 13 Māori patients who had been acutely hospitalized within the past 12 months and their whānau members. The first wānanga utilized storytelling and journey mapping to collect data. The second wānanga refined the initial themes. Wānanga were audiorecorded and then inductively coded and developed into themes. Results: Thirteen patients and whānau attended the first wānanga, while 10 patients and whānau participated in the second wānanga). Four themes were developed: (1) Whakawhanaungatanga (establishing connections and relationships), (2) Whakamana (uplifting the status and esteem of Māori), (3) Whakawhitiwhiti kōrero (the importance of communicating, discussing and deliberating) and (4) Kotahitanga (working together with purpose) all provide insights into the importance of effectively engaging and connecting with Māori patients and whānau when acutely hospitalized. Conclusions: The experiences and priorities of Māori patients and whānau affirm the international literature, suggesting that Indigenous relational concepts are critical to building relationships, connections and trust. Despite existing healthcare models for working with Indigenous peoples, their poor application contributes to sub-optimal healthcare experiences at all points of their healthcare journey. A relational mode of practice focused on engagement and forming connections better meets the needs of Indigenous peoples engaging with inpatient health services. Implications for the profession and/or patient care: Despite the existence of Indigenous models of care, Indigenous peoples consistently report a lack of engagement and connection when accessing inpatient health services. Without establishing relationships, applying models of care is challenging. Impact (Addressing): • What problem did the study address? Internationally, healthcare systems are consistently ill-equipped to deliver culturally safe care for Indigenous and marginalized peoples, evident in ongoing health inequities. Like other reports of Indigenous experiences of health services, Māori express dissatisfaction with care delivery in an acute inpatient setting. This study investigated Māori patients and whānau experiences engaging with acute hospital inpatient services and their priorities for a Māori-centred model of relational care. • What were the main findings? Māori patients and whānau recounted negative experiences with healthcare professionals lacking effective relationships and trust. Satisfaction occurred when engagement with health care professionals resembled Indigenous cultural rituals of encounter that considered their holistic, collective and dynamic worldviews. Previous models of relational care, while helpful, are not Indigenous and so do not address their needs, such as engagement as a mode of practice (how) to achieve this. • Where and on whom will the research have an impact? This research impacts Indigenous peoples' health outcomes, particularly Māori, and nurses and clinicians working and interacting within acute inpatient and other hospital settings. Indigenous research methods support co-constructing knowledge for translation into practical outcomes through transformational practices, policies and theory development. A survey sent to fellows of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) aimed to document issues affecting gender equity in the anaesthesia workplace. A response rate of 38% was achieved, with women representing a greater proportion of respondents (64.2%). On average women worked fewer hours than men and spent a larger percentage of time in public practice; however, satisfaction rates were similar between genders. There was a gender pay gap which could not be explained by the number of hours worked or years since achieving fellowship. The rates of bullying and harassment were high among all genders and have not changed in 20 years since the first gender equity survey by Strange Khursandi in 1998. Women perceived that they were more likely to be discriminated against particularly in the presence of other sources of discrimination, and highlighted the importance of the need for diversity and inclusion in anaesthetic workplaces. Furthermore, women reported higher rates of caregiving and unpaid domestic responsibilities, confirming that anaesthetists are not immune to the factors affecting broader society despite our professional status. The overall effect was summarised by half of female respondents reporting that they felt their gender was a barrier to a career in anaesthesia. While unable to be included in statistics due to low numbers, non-binary gendered anaesthetists responded and must be included in all future work. The inequities documented here are evidence that ANZCA's gender equity subcommittee must continue promoting and implementing policies in workplaces across Australia and New Zealand. It is generally understood and expected that clergy care for others; however, one often forgets that clergy also need attention. Unless clergy take time to care for their own needs, they may not be as effective in supporting others. Even very competent clergy may suffer huge physical, mental, emotional and spiritual strain whilst trying to sustain their callings. Many clergy experience high levels of anxiety and stress and may burn out within the ministry because they have life's priorities out of balance. Among the key concepts impacting on clergy well-being are the need for balance and boundaries, the body's need for adequate rest, the rationale for Sabbath and sabbaticals, and the appropriate use of time. Ordained clergy in the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand, and Polynesia were invited to participate in an anonymous online survey to investigate these issues as well as find out their understanding of self-care. Many participants acknowledged the importance of self-care and know what should be done, however, it is evident that many clergy work very long hours and don't take enough time to rest, rejuvenate, and be restored. This article reports on findings from a multi-method study on long working hours and their impact on family life. It draws on data from the New Zealand 2006 Census, a review of the literature, and a small qualitative study involving in-depth interviews with 17 families with dependent children in which at least one partner was working long hours. The study found that parents' working hours were driven by the requirements of their jobs, income, and the cultures of their workplaces, as well as the satisfaction work provided. Many parents felt unable to reduce their hours, despite believing that their hours had a variety of negative impacts on family life. A number of factors mediated the impact of long hours of work, including the availability of extended family for childcare and support; having flexible work arrangements and control over hours of work (including both the number of hours and when hours were worked); and how satisfied spouses were with both the number of hours of paid work and the impact of these hours on the availability of the long-hours worker to spend time with children and to do a share of the household chores. Recent research highlights significant risks associated with health professionals working long hours—risks to their health and safety, to the safety and quality of care provided to patients, and to public safety. This article undertakes a review of the various instruments used to regulate working hours in health systems, using six countries (Australia, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and the European Union as primary comparators. The review demonstrates differences in the instruments used to regulate the issue in these countries and in the economic, social, and cultural factors that limit instrument choice and moderate instrument effectiveness. The global tourism industry has been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the World Tourism Organization predicting the possible loss of 1.1 billion international visitors and 1.2 trillion in export revenues. Media coverage has also highlighted the job losses across tourism organizations worldwide. Until recently, tourism was New Zealand's biggest export earner, employing 8% of the country's total workforce. However, a negative perception of tourism as both a subject of study and as a career presents challenges for the New Zealand tourism industry, which even before the pandemic was struggling to attract workers. Previous research has found that the often-vocational nature of tourism education contributes to tourism's reputation as a less credible academic subject. This research, conducted prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, identifies the perceptions New Zealand secondary school tourism students have about a tourism career and the study of tourism and the implications for education, industry and government. A qualitative, feminist, case study methodology was used to research the feminist leadership of three women principals of coeducational secondary schools. Information was collected by interviewing and observing the three feminist principals, interv iewing 24 staff, and collecting documents. Research indicated that being student focused was central to the practice of feminist educational leaders. This thesis explored how they were able to remain student focused in a New Zealand, neo-liberal, educati on context with increased financial, accountability and marketing responsibilities. By resisting and appropriating the opportunities and demands created by the reforms, the feminist principals were, to some extent, able to resist the pressure to be less student focused. However, in doing so they worked very long hours. Their personal value systems and the school context were also important influences on their practice. Background: Pharmacist prescribers have comprehensive pharmacotherapy knowledge that can be useful for management of complex health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, yet the number of pharmacist prescribers working in New Zealand primary care is low. Aim: To explore the experiences of pharmacist prescribers in supporting type 2 diabetes management in New Zealand primary care. Methods: Qualitative research design using semi-structured interviews with six pharmacist prescribers working in NZ primary care. Thematic analysis guided this study and themes were finalised with the wider research team. Results: Three major themes were identified: team approach, health inequity and the role of a pharmacist prescriber. This study found that pharmacist prescribers may improve health equity by providing advanced pharmacotherapy knowledge within a wider primary care team to support complex patient needs and understanding the wider social determinants of health that impact effective diabetes management. Participants reportedly had more time to spend with patients (than GPs or nurses) and could also contribute to improving health outcomes by directly educating and empowering patients. Conclusion: The views of pharmacist prescribers have seldom been explored and this study suggests that their role may be under-utilised in primary care. In particular, pharmacist prescribers can provide specialist prescribing (and often mobile) care, and may contribute to improving health outcomes and reducing inequity when used as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Technology has made life more complex, and mobile working (mWork) captures the way employees' smart‐device use (e.g. smartphones, laptops etc.) can facilitate working during family time at home and what the effects of this use are. Engaging in mWork is expected to be detrimental to employee outcomes. In this study, mWork is explored as it relates to turnover intentions and work–family and family–work conflict, with conflict expected to mediate the influence on turnover. Furthermore, given the potential dynamics from gender and parental status, these are both included as moderators, and ultimately a moderated mediation model is tested. Using data from 419 New Zealand employees just after New Zealand's lockdown finished in May 2020, there is overall strong support found for the direct and mediation hypotheses. Overall, mWork influences turnover intentions by blurring the line between work and personal life (leading to higher work–family and family–work conflict), and these also influence turnover intentions. Background: Emergency service workers (ESW) are known to be at increased risk of mental disorders but population-level and longitudinal data regarding their risk of suicide are lacking. Method: Suicide data for 2001–2017 were extracted from the Australian National Coronial Information Service (NCIS) for two occupational groups: ESW (ambulance personnel, fire-fighters and emergency workers, police officers) and individuals employed in all other occupations. Age-standardised suicide rates were calculated and risk of suicide compared using negative binomial regression modelling. Results: 13 800 suicide cases were identified among employed adults (20–69 years) over the study period. The age-standardised suicide rate across all ESW was 14.3 per 100 000 (95% CI 11.0–17.7) compared to 9.8 per 100 000 (95% CI 9.6–9.9) for other occupations. Significant occupational differences in the method of suicide were identified (p < 0.001). There was no evidence for increased risk of suicide among ESW compared to other occupations once age, gender and year of death were accounted for (RR = 0.99, 95% CI 0.84–1.17; p = 0.95). In contrast, there was a trend for ambulance personnel to be at elevated risk of suicide (RR = 1.41, 95% CI 1.00–2.00, p = 0.053). Conclusion: Whilst age-standardised suicide rates among ESW are higher than other occupations, emergency service work was not independently associated with an increased risk of suicide, with the exception of an observed trend in ambulance personnel. Despite an increased focus on ESW mental health and wellbeing over the last two decades, there was no evidence that rates of suicide among ESW are changing over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New Zealand has demonstrated strong support for Ukraine since the Russian invasion of February 2022. From logistical support to infantry training, the NZDF has been a key player in helping to deliver on the New Zealand government's general statements of support. Though located far from the conflict, New Zealand's traditional values of support for international law, democracy and collective security in the face of external aggression have all been major drivers for these deployments. But certain other drivers, such as recent problems with recruitment and retention in the armed forces, are perhaps lesser known but also important in rounding out an understanding of why and how New Zealand has responded to the situation. Purpose: The study maps workplace stakeholders' perceptions of living wage (LW) impacts in New Zealand. Empirical findings inform an inaugural model of LW impacts and contingent factors at individual, organisation, sector/industry and national levels. Design/methodology/approach: Data from a national employee survey, semi-structured interviews with business sector representatives, and staff in two LW organisation cases were subjected to thematic content analysis. Findings: Informants emphasised anticipated LW impacts amid complex workplace and regulatory dynamics. Employers/managers stressed its cost effects. However, employees, human resource (HR) advocates and other LW proponents highlighted employee "investment" impacts that improve worker productivity and societal circumstances. Research limitations/implications: This study highlights the need for further context-sensitive LW analysis. An initial model of LW impacts provides a framework for comparative and longitudinal work in other national contexts. Practical implications: The proposed model categorises perceived LW effects and can inform policy development. Findings also stress a need for cross-agency initiatives to address LW concerns, including a key role for HR. Social implications: The findings highlight perceptions of a LW impacting within and beyond the workplace. Whilst higher-quality management is seen to encourage better-informed decisions about "going living wage", a LW's positive socio-economic impacts require multi-lateral initiatives, suggesting that those initiatives are is part of wider obligations for policy makers to encourage decent living standards. Originality/value: This study provides a much-needed and inaugural focus on the intertwined workplace and wider impacts of a LW, extending extant econometric analyses. New Zealanders can cross borders freely, work and live in Australia indefinitely thanks to the Trans‐Tasman Travel Agreement. This paper uses a recently developed decomposition method to decompose the weekly wage gap at various quantiles on the wage distribution between New Zealand‐born (NZ‐born) and Australian‐born workers, and between NZ‐born workers, migrants from other English speaking countries (OESC), and from non‐English speaking countries (NESC) to determine how free and regulated migration influences migrants' performance in the Australian labour market. We found that NZ‐born workers earned higher weekly wages than both Australian‐born and NESC workers but earned lower wages than OESC migrants. Differences in endowment were primarily responsible for the wage gaps between NZ‐born and Australian‐born workers and between NZ‐born and OESC migrants. However, differences in returns to worker and job characteristics are mainly responsible for the wage gap between NZ‐born and NESC migrants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Globally, women are a minority in the engineering profession. Various initiatives are adopted by employers to support women's career progression and retention in the profession. This paper examines the effectiveness of the common initiatives. Focus groups were conducted with 25 New Zealand based female engineers to explore their experiences and perceptions of women in engineering initiatives. Women discussed the effectiveness, and unintended consequences, of the initiatives. Their responses were coded using the NVivo software to identify key themes, which were then categorized using the universal/selective/indicated model. The findings show that universal initiatives which encompass men and women are well supported with few unintended consequences. These initiatives (e.g., subconscious bias training) focus less on changing or supporting women and more on changing the environment. In contrast, selective initiatives (e.g., female leadership programs) which focus on women, had mixed support and more unintended consequences. Specifically, they emphasize societal stereotypes that men are a better fit for the role of engineer and that women need help to adapt to the male-dominated environment. In this article we utilize grounded theory to explore women's experiences in the unique construction industry context that followed the 2010 Canterbury (New Zealand) earthquakes. Data were obtained from 36 semi-structured interviews conducted with women working in a variety of occupations in the construction industry. We identify three inter-related categories: capitalizing on opportunity, demonstrating capability and surface tolerance, which together represent a response process that we label "deferential tailoring". The deferential tailoring process explains how women intentionally shape their response to industry conditions through self-regulating behaviours that enables them to successfully seize opportunities and manage gender-related challenges in the working environment. Our findings challenge existing research which suggests that women adopt submissive coping strategies to conform to androcentric norms in the construction industry. Instead, we argue that the process of deferential tailoring can empower women to build positive workplace relationships, enhance career development, and help shift perceptions of the value of their work in the industry. Purpose: This paper explores the economic and social effects of human capital investment in the 20th century. As well as drawing on census data and statistical yearbooks in Australia and Aoteoroa/New Zealand, the paper develops its argument by an intersection of scholarly work in sociology, economics and the history of education to consider the effects of increased human capital investment on economic growth but also on the experiences of childhood, work discipline and the present climate crisis. Design/methodology/approach: This paper considers the implications of what economic historian Claudia Goldin has described as the "human capital century" for the history of school and university education. By reconsidering education in the settler colonies, especially Australia and Aoteoroa/New Zealand, as "stimulus", this helps explain key aspects of contemporary human capital investment, which the paper argues should be understood as constituted by children's and young people's free labour at school, university and across the economy. Findings: This research argues that children's and young people's free labour, performed in educational institutions, constitutes a large portion of Australia and Aoteoroa/New Zealand's national investment in human capital. At key points, this investment has acted as an economic stimulus, promoting surges of profitability. The effects were not confined to young people. Systematised, educational expansion also became the foundation of environmental degradation, labour market exploitation and a relentless increase in service-sector productivity that is worn on professional bodies. Productivity increases have been associated with reduced professional autonomy as a managerial class coerced professionals into working harder, though often under the guise of working "smarter" – a fiction that encouraged or coerced even greater personal investment in collective human capital. This investment of personal time, effort and selfhood by children and the professionals they grew into can thus be seen, in Marxian terms, as a crucial vector of capitalist exploitation in the 20th century. Practical implications: The paper concludes by suggesting that a reduction of managerial influence in educational settings would improve learner and professional autonomy with improved labour and environmental conditions. Originality/value: The paper makes a unique contribution to the history of education by exploring education as stimulus as a key component of education's role in 20th and 21st century capitalism. We explore the wellbeing of employees (via insomnia and job burnout) due to the importance of a healthy workforce. High Performance Work Systems (HPWS) have been argued as playing a central role, and the present study explores a path model whereby HPWS influences job burnout (emotional exhaustion, cynicism) and then insomnia. Further, work-life balance (WLB) is included as a theoretically derived moderator which might attenuate relationships. These relationships are tested using a sample of 306 employees with time-lagged data, using moderated mediation analysis. The findings show that HPWS is significantly related to all constructs, and while burnout mediates HPWS effects, there remain significant indirect effects. Further, WLB predicts all wellbeing outcomes and interacts with HPWS towards cynicism, and then acts as a boundary condition on the moderated mediation model. Ultimately, we find the indirect effect of HPWS on insomnia (through cynicism) becomes weaker as employee WLB gets stronger. The findings suggest that managing employee wellbeing is a complex process working through various factors, although HPWS appear to play a key role with WLB. The implications for HR are discussed. This paper explores the temporal dimensions in and consequences of migration from the perspective of how they are involved in both promoting and undermining cosmopolitan attitudes and practices amongst mobile subjects. Drawing on qualitative research with new Chinese migrants to New Zealand, the paper explores how their process of becoming cosmopolitan to participate in intercultural interactions is constructed differently in relation to momentary, everyday, remembered and imagined times/temporalities embedded in their lives. In particular, the paper asks whether and how migrant individuals navigate through temporal dissonance occurred across the migratory process by engaging in or retreating from cosmopolitanism. Essentially, this paper develops a temporally-sensitive theoretical approach to unpack how time and temporalities function in the migration process, especially how they articulate with the possibilities of migrant individuals encountering diversity and obtaining a sense of home in the host society, thus contributing to studies of cosmopolitanism and time in migration. This paper addresses the historical geography of British child migration to New Zealand between 1949 and 1954; a period that marked the 'beginning of the end' of centuries of state-sanctioned emigration of unaccompanied, poor, British children. This particular child migration programme was executed under the dual motivations of boosting the New Zealand economy through population increase, whilst 'rescuing' British children living in poverty. This paper seeks to explore the concept of the commodification of children through an historical account based on thematic analysis of New Zealand newspaper articles published between 1910 and 2017. This analysis demonstrates the way newspaper stories both reflect social discourse – in this instance concerning the desirability of the hosting of British child migrants – and act as a socio-technical device that shapes them – marketing the children to potential host families. This paper takes a critical, historical employment relations approach to present an original contribution to research on sustainable tourism employment. The research is focussed on a gendered analysis of (un)sustainable employment practices in the New Zealand tourist hotel sector from 1950 to 2000, specifically concentrating on the role of the Hotel Workers Union and the broader post-war corporatist and neo-liberal economic, political and social policies that affected tourism work during this period. After presenting a detailed historical narrative in the findings, the paper argues that by uncovering the influences of global, national and organisation level change on sustainable labour we can gain meaningful, new perspectives on employment in this sector. Climate change represents complexity for farmers in that events resulting from climatic changes can be concurrently abrupt, extreme, persistent, and can span boundaries. This can create complexity and difficulty for organisations in terms of how they make sense to act. To understand sensemaking processes, we explored climate change by studying a drought event. Relying on qualitative methods and a sample of dairy farmers in New Zealand who experienced a drought event over the decade 2003–2013, findings suggest that dairy farmers made sense by their: (1) embedded, immersive experience on farms; (2) use of ecological material; and (3) community interaction. Our findings extend insight into sensemaking processes, particularly in the areas of routine perspectives, the use of natural material objects, and the social nature of making sense. Implications are relevant to practitioners who work in farm associations, extension services and policy-making who have roles requiring them to communicate about climate change to farmers. What makes something a stressor within clinical students' education is unclear. Medical students moving from a predominantly protected classroom environment to a situated–work environment provided an ideal transition point to explore the criteria that might make a learning experience a stressor and whether these stressors hinder or challenge learning. Data on the stressors associated with learning experiences in clinical education were collected from New Zealand undergraduate medical students. Free text comments, in a survey-based questionnaire were supplemented by focus group data. Using inductive thematic analysis with grounded theory, themes were generated about the characteristics of stressors; referred to here as stressor criteria. These stressor criteria were then classified according to their impact on perceived learning. Under the broad headings of the nature of the learning task, external factors, internal factors, and social interaction; 12 stressor criteria groupings were defined. Some of these criteria were a positive challenge to learning (e.g. legitimacy of the task, novelty of the learning, social interactions) and others a hindrance. Not all stressors hinder learning. Instead, and depending on their nature, many result in perceived assistance to learning. Stressors hindering learning need to be recognised by the teacher, especially those that can be converted from a hindrance to an assistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and associated interventions resulted in changes in both the demand and supply of mental health services and necessitated agile adaptation and innovation from service providers. Aims: The aim of this study was to explore what innovative solutions were adopted in response to COVID-19 and the pandemic control measures, what opportunities and challenges were associated with these innovations, as well as to critically reflect on the longer-term sustainability of the innovations in the context of Aotearoa/New Zealand mental healthcare. Materials and methods: We used thematic analysis to analyse the data from the 23 in-depth interviews with helpline employees and general practitioners from 18 service providers that regularly engage in mental healthcare. Results: Two key themes related to COVID-19 and the pandemic control measures were identified from respondents’ accounts. These were “Technological innovations” and “Process innovations” where providers noted types of innovative solutions, and opportunities and challenges associated with those. The themes culminated in a meta theme “Sustainability of changes to service delivery” that appeared consistently in each theme and asks to consider how sustainable these innovative solutions might be in the long-term. Namely, sustainability of innovation was questioned in respect to the (a) innovative solutions being the emergency solutions with little or no impact analysis, (b) “returning back to normal” due to limited future funding and innovation as a sunk cost, and (c) sporadic and inconsistent innovation between service providers that does not contribute to quality and continuity of care from the systems perspective. Conclusion: COVID-19 and the measures of pandemic control were associated with an increase in innovative solutions from service providers. There were both opportunities and challenges associated with these innovative efforts and the sustainability of innovation was questioned. Future research about COVID-19 related innovation of service provision should focus on service user experiences and empirically measure the innovation safety and efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The benefits of dialysis in the older population remain highly debated, particularly for certain dialysis modalities. This study aimed to explore the dialysis modality utilization patterns between in‐centre haemodialysis (ICHD), peritoneal dialysis (PD) and home haemodialysis (HHD) and their association with outcomes in older persons. Methods: Older persons (≥75 years) initiating dialysis in Australia and New Zealand from 1999 to 2018 reported to the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant (ANZDATA) registry were included. The main aim of the study was to characterize dialysis modality utilization patterns and describe individual characteristics of each pattern. Relationships between identified patterns and survival, causes of death and withdrawal were examined as secondary analyses, where the pattern was considered as the exposure. Results: A total of 10 306 older persons initiated dialysis over the study period. Of these, 6776 (66%) and 1535 (15%) were exclusively treated by ICHD and PD, respectively, while 136 (1%) ever received HHD during their dialysis treatment course. The remainder received both ICHD and PD: 906 (9%) started dialysis on ICHD and 953 (9%) on PD. Different individual characteristics were seen across dialysis modality utilization patterns. Median survival time was 3.0 (95%CI 2.9–3.1) years. Differences in survival were seen across groups and varied depending on the time period following dialysis initiation. Dialysis withdrawal was an important cause of death and varied according to individual characteristics and utilization patterns. Conclusion: This study showed that dialysis modality utilization patterns in older persons are associated with mortality, independent of individual characteristics. Summary at a glance: This large multinational (ANZDATA) registry study of older individuals identified variability in the modality utilization patterns following dialysis initiation (i.e. in‐centre haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or a combination inclusive of home haemodialysis) and differences in outcomes when evaluating the pattern of initiation. Our current food system is failing to deliver on equitable health outcomes, wellbeing and food security and the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand has high inequities and one the highest levels of childhood obesity nationally. This articlereports baseline quantitative data from 2087 students (aged 9 or 13) from 41 primary and secondary schools, including schools participating in the Ka Ora, Ka Ako Healthy School Lunch programme. Students answered an online survey covering food security, general wellbeing (WHO-5), eating behaviours and physical activity and were measured/weighed for body size. 16.8% of students experienced food insufficiency in the home and 31.3% of 13-yr-olds did not eat breakfast. Overall, only 12.9% met the national vegetable intake guidelines and 39.6% met fruit intake guidelines. Students in high advantage schools (decile 8–10) were twice as likely to meet the vegetable intake guidelines. 47.1% of 13-year old girls were at risk of reduced wellbeing. 54.6% of students had a healthy weight and 44.5% experienced overweight or obesity; in low advantage (decile 1–3) schools 64.4% experienced overweight or obesity. The data form a baseline for an evaluation of multiple public health initiatives underway in Hawke's Bay to improve food environments and nutritional wellbeing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A growing body of research indicates both positive and negative effects of grandparent childcare; effects that are largely dependent upon the context and intensity of the care are required. Here, we suggest that context to be inclusive of cultural background. Drawing on the indigenous methodological framework, talanoa, the views of 13 Pacific Island grandparents in relation to themes of grandparent childminding are explored, as well its proximity to perceptions of elder abuse. A cultural analysis reveals that traditions specific to the Pacific way of life may lead to increased risk of prolonged childcare. The participants in this study felt that prolonged childminding deprived them of time which could be used to benefit them and their community in the long run. It was viewed as a form of disrespect, as older people are revered and held in high regard in decision making activities from the Pacific worldview. The participants embraced their roles as the knowledge holders of cultural treasures; responsible for teaching children and grandchildren their genealogy and language, and for upholding the protocols of their cultural heritage. Background: Demand for mental health services in New Zealand and internationally is growing. Little is known about how psychiatrists are faring in this environment. This study aimed to investigate wellbeing of psychiatrists working in the public health system in New Zealand, identify the main risk factors for work-related stress, gauge perceptions of how workload has changed over time, assess job satisfaction and whether individuals intend or desire to leave their work. Methods: Psychiatrists working in New Zealand who were also members of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists were invited to participate in an online survey. Main outcome measures were degree of burnout and stress experienced at work. Supplementary measures included perceived workplace demands and levels of support. Predictor variables included perceptions of changes to workloads over time, degree of job satisfaction and intentions to leave work. Logistic regression assessed characteristics associated with burnout and job satisfaction as well as intentions to leave work. Free text comments were analysed thematically alongside quantitative trends. Results: 368/526 responded (70% response rate). 34.6% met the criteria for burnout and 35.3% scored with high work stress. There were no significant patterns of association with demographic variables but significant correlation with all but one predictor variable; having experienced a change to the demands of the on-call workload. 45% agreed they would leave their current job if able and 87% disagreed that they are working in a well-resourced mental health service. Respondents emphasised the impact of growing workloads and expressed concerns about their ability to provide optimal care in these circumstances. Conclusions: High burnout appears to affect one in three psychiatrists in New Zealand. Many attribute their feelings of burnout to demand for their services. These findings may assist with better workforce planning for psychiatry and emphasises potential consequences of demand for and poor resourcing of mental health services for the retention and wellbeing of doctors in psychiatry worldwide. Abstract: Background: The relationship between long working hours and harmful alcohol consumption reported in the literature is equivocal. Objective: This study aimed to investigate this relationship in a methodologically rigorous fashion. Design and participants: A cross-sectional analysis of a large cohort study of Australian and New Zealand nurses and midwives was undertaken. Methods: Psychometrically robust standardised assessments of alcohol consumption and problems and other key variables were elicited using an electronic survey. Crude and adjusted logistic regression models using complete case and multistage multiple imputed data were employed. Results: The study included 4419 participants, 3552 from Australia and 867 from New Zealand. Long working hours were common, with 33.2% working 40–49h/week and 7.5% working ≥50h/week. Overall, 13.9% engaged in harmful daily drinking. Significant associations between long working hours and harmful daily alcohol consumption was seen in crude and adjusted complete case and imputed logistic regression models. In the adjusted model with imputed data, the odds of harmful daily drinking increased by 1.17 (95% confidence interval: 1.01, 1.36) between <40h/week and 40–49h/week groups, and between 40–49h/week and ≥50h/week groups. Conclusions: Many nurses and midwives engaging in harmful daily drinking and work long hours. Since the late 1970s, the average hours worked by full-time employees in Australia has increased. Unless these long working hours can be curbed, workforce policies and programmes aimed at prevention, supportive and empathetic intervention, and recovery need to be instigated; both to protect patients and the nurses and midwives themselves. The working hours of surgical trainees are a subject of international debate. Excessive working hours are fatiguing, and compromise performance, learning and work-life balance. However, reducing hours can impact on continuity of care, training experience and service provision. This study defines the current working hours of Australasian trainees, to inform the working hours debate in our regions. An online survey was conducted of all current Australasian trainees. Questions determined hours spent at work (AW) and off-site on-call (OC) per week, and roster structures were evaluated by training year, specialty and location. The response rate was 55.3%. Trainees averaged 61.4 ± 11.7 h/week AW, with 5% working ≥80 h. OC shifts were worked by 73.5%, for an average of 27.8 ± 14.3 h/week. Trainees of all levels worked similar hours ( P= 0.10); however, neurosurgical trainees worked longer hours than most other specialties ( P < 0.01). Tertiary centre rotations involved longer AW hours ( P= 0.01) and rural rotations more OC ( P < 0.001). Long days (>12 h) were worked by 86%; median frequency 1:4.4 days; median duration 15 h. OC shifts of 24-h duration were worked by 75%; median frequency 1:4.2 days; median sleep: 5-7 h/shift; median uninterrupted sleep: 3-5 h/shift. This study has quantified the working hours and roster structures of Australasian surgical trainees. By international standards, Australasian trainee working hours are around average. However, some rosters demand long hours and/or induce chronic sleep loss, placing some trainees at risk of fatigue. Ongoing efforts are needed to promote safe rostering practices.
