Wellbeing of international students is an extensively explored topic in international education discourses. A plethora of research has been devoted to general wellbeing of international students. Nevertheless, little is known about international students' spiritual wellbeing which can be pivotal to their adaptation to the new environment. In the context of New Zealand higher education, utilizing an intrinsic single case study design, this study examined spiritual wellbeing experienced by Indian international students. Phenomenographic interviews were conducted with 13 Indian students who were studying management courses at postgraduate level in an institute of technology in a North Island city of New Zealand. Data analysis generated three dimensions (spiritual cognition, spiritual practice, spiritual efficacy) of spiritual wellbeing which were influenced by four strategies of adaptation (connection, isolation, accommodation, integration). This study provided new insights into the experiences of international students which may influence international education in the long run.

In spite of debate, ambiguity, and tension around teacher dispositions, in the past over two decades, the place of dispositions in initial teacher education (ITE) has been widely supported among policy makers and researchers. Specifically, debate on whether dispositions are teachable has largely given way to action to foster dispositions. Adopting a two-cycle participatory action research design, this study explored ways to teach the first-year teacher candidates' dispositions in an early childhood ITE programme in New Zealand. The intervention included eight focus dispositions and corresponding strategies to teach each focus disposition. Data collection methods included student self-assessment surveys, individual and focus group interviews with students and teaching staff, team meetings, and a variety of pedagogical documentation. Ethnographic content analysis generated three themes: legitimacy of the intervention, experiential orientation of the intervention, and effect of the intervention. The study exemplifies how dispositions intervention can be incorporated in ITE programmes.

Background: Despite the efficacy of absolute ethanol (EtOH), its radiolucency introduces several risks in interventional therapy for treating vascular malformations. This study aims to develop a novel radiopaque ethanol injection (REI) to address this issue. Methods: Iopromide is mixed with ethanol to achieve radiopacity and improve the physicochemical properties of the solution. Overall, 82 male New Zealand white rabbits are selected for in vivo radiopacity testing, peripheral vein sclerosis [animals were divided into the following 5 groups (n = 6): negative control (NC, saline, 0.250 ml/kg), positive control (EtOH, 0.250 ml/kg), low-dose REI (L-D REI, 0.125 ml/kg), moderate-dose REI (M-D REI, 0.250 ml/kg), and high-dose REI (H-D REI 0.375 ml/kg)], pharmacokinetic analyses (the blood sample was harvested before injection, 5 min, 10 min, 20 min, 40 min, 1 h, 2 h, 4 h, and 8 h after injection in peripheral vein sclerosis experiment), peripheral artery embolization [animals were divided into the following 5 groups (n = 3): NC (saline, 0.250 ml/kg), positive control (EtOH, 0.250 ml/kg), L-D REI (0.125 ml/kg), M-D REI (0.250 ml/kg), and H-D REI (0.375 ml/kg)], kidney transcatheter arterial embolization [animals were divided into the following 4 groups (n = 3): positive control (EtOH, 0.250 ml/kg), L-D REI (0.125 ml/kg), M-D REI (0.250 ml/kg), and H-D REI (0.375 ml/kg); each healthy kidney was injected with saline as negative control], and biosafety evaluations [animals were divided into the following 5 groups (n = 3): NC (0.250 ml/kg), high-dose EtOH (0.375 ml/kg), L-D REI (0.125 ml/kg), M-D REI (0.250 ml/kg), and H-D REI (0.375 ml/kg)]. Then, a prospective cohort study involving 6 patients with peripheral venous malformations (VMs) is performed to explore the clinical safety and effectiveness of REI. From Jun 1, 2023 to August 31, 2023, 6 patients [age: (33.3 ± 17.2) years] with lingual VMs received sclerotherapy of REI and 2-month follow-up. Adverse events and serious adverse events were evaluated, whereas the efficacy of REI was determined by both the traceability of the REI under DSA throughout the entire injection and the therapeutic effect 2 months after a single injection. Results: The REI contains 81.4% ethanol (v/v) and 111.3 mg/ml iodine, which can be traced throughout the injection in the animals and patients. The REI also exerts a similar effect as EtOH on peripheral venous sclerosis, peripheral arterial embolization, and renal embolization. Furthermore, the REI can be metabolized at a similar rate compared to EtOH and Ultravist® and did not cause injury to the animals' heart, liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys and brain. No REI-related adverse effects have occurred during sclerotherapy of VMs, and 4/6 patients (66.7%) have achieved complete response at follow-up. Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a life-threatening opportunistic pathogen, particularly in pregnant women, infants, and the elderly. Currently, maternal vaccination is considered the most viable long-term option for preventing GBS mother-to-infant infection, and two polysaccharide conjugate vaccines utilizing CRM197 as a carrier protein have undergone clinical phase II trials. Surface immunogenic protein (Sip), present in all identified serotypes of GBS strains so far, is a protective surface protein of GBS. In this study, the type Ia capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of GBS was utilized as a model to develop candidate antigens for a polysaccharide conjugate vaccine by coupling it with the Sip of GBS and the traditional carrier protein CRM197. Serum analysis from immunized New Zealand rabbits and CD1 mice revealed that there was no significant difference in antibody titers between the Ia-Sip group and Ia-CRM197 group; however, both were significantly higher than those observed in the Ia polysaccharide group. Opsonophagocytosis and passive immune protection results using rabbit serum indicated no significant difference between the Ia-Sip and Ia-CRM197 groups, both outperforming the Ia polysaccharide group. Furthermore, serum from the Ia-Sip group had a cross-protective effect on multiple types of GBS strains. The challenge test results in CD1 mice demonstrated that the Ia-Sip group provided complete protection against lethal doses of bacteria and also showed cross-protection against type III strain. Our study demonstrates for the first time that Ia-Sip is immunogenic and provides serotype-independent protection in glycan conjugate vaccines, which also indicates Sip may serve as an excellent carrier protein for GBS glycan conjugate vaccines and provide cross-protection against multiple GBS strains. Aims To examine the relationship between prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and children's behavioural and emotional development in a large generalizable sample of women and their children in Aotearoa New Zealand. Methods Using data from the Growing Up in New Zealand longitudinal cohort, we investigated the relationship between maternal PAE and behavioural and emotional development in 8-year-old children. We explored secondary outcomes including measures of language, executive function, academic achievement, and adaptive behaviour. Results We found no significant differences in the measures of behavioural and emotional development in children 8 years old based on alcohol consumption. No significant differences in behavioural and emotional development were found based on amount of PAE and when PAE occurred, despite controlling for a range of potential confounding factors, such as neighbourhood deprivation and maternal health measures. PAE was associated with significantly higher scores for parent-rated oral language indicating better oral language. In Māori mothers, PAE was significantly associated with an increased risk of higher scores on two of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire subscales. Conclusions We did not find an association between PAE and behavioural and emotional development in children aged 8 years. PAE and behavioural and emotional development are difficult to measure accurately, and the moderating variables between them are complex. Future analyses will require larger cohorts of mothers and their children using precise measures of PAE and outcomes to enable more precise estimates of association. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: While dietary sources of calcium are important for bone health, the intake of milk and milk products decreases as children get older. A free milk in schools program may mitigate this decrease in milk consumption. We evaluated the Fonterra Milk for schools program (a free milk initiative) by determining changes in children's milk consumption and anthropometric measures over a 2-year period. Methods: The evaluation was conducted in children aged 7-9 years in a representative sample of primary schools participating in the free milk program, in Auckland, New Zealand. The primary outcome was the proportion of children meeting the New Zealand guidelines for dairy and milk product consumption over 7 days (=2 servings per day). Changes in anthropometric measures were also assessed as secondary outcomes. Results: Nine schools (N = 511 children) participated in the evaluation. The proportion of children meeting the New Zealand guidelines for milk and milk product consumption over 7 days increased significantly from baseline to 2 years' follow-up (72% vs 94%; p < 0.001). Body mass index z scores did not change significantly between baseline and 2 years' follow-up. Conclusions: The Fonterra Milk for Schools initiative appears to be an effective way of increasing milk/milk product consumption behaviors in school-aged children.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the radix of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (RAS) is mainly used to replenish and invigorate the blood circulation. This study investigated anti-platelet aggregation activities were used by New Zealand rabbits, and high-performance liquid chromatography data were obtained to determine the spectrum–effect relationship for different commercial grades of RAS. Plasma and urine metabolites were examined using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry-based metabolomics to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the role of these metabolites in a rat model of blood deficiency (BD). Plasma and spleen metabolites were additionally examined using ultra-performance liquid chromatography plus Q-Exactive tandem mass spectrometry-based lipidomics to clarify the mechanisms of RAS in treating BD. The third grade of RAS exhibited the best activity in replenishing and invigorating blood in vitro and in vivo. Ferulic acid, ligustilide, senkyunolide I, uridine, and guanine are quality markers of anti-platelet aggregation activity. Based on the metabolomics results, 19 potential biomarkers were screened in plasma, and 12 potential metabolites were detected in urine. In lipidomics analyses, 73 potential biomarkers were screened in plasma, and 112 potential biomarkers were screened in the spleen. RAS may restore lipid metabolism by regulating disorders of glycerophospholipid and sphingolipid metabolism, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, amino acid metabolism (thereby improving energy metabolism), and arachidonic acid metabolism (thereby promoting blood circulation). These results provide a deeper understanding of the effects of different grades of RAS and a scientific reference for the establishment of grading standards and for the clinical use of RAS. Tertiary institutions internationally aim to increase student diversity, however are struggling to achieve equitable academic outcomes for indigenous and ethnic minority students and detailed exploration of factors that impact on success is required. This study explored the predictive effect of admission variables on academic outcomes for health professional students by ethnic grouping. Kaupapa Maori and Pacific research methodologies were used to conduct a quantitative analysis using data for 2686 health professional students [150 Maori, 257 Pacific, 2279, non-Maori non-Pacific (nMnP)]. The predictive effect of admission variables: school decile; attending school in Auckland; type of admission; bridging programme; and first-year bachelor results on academic outcomes: year 2-4 grade point average (GPA); graduating; graduating in the minimum time; and optimal completion for the three ethnic groupings and the full cohort was explored using multiple regression analyses. After adjusting for admission variables, for every point increase in first year bachelor GPA: year 2-4 GPA increased by an average of 0.46 points for Maori (p = 0.0002, 95% CI 0.22, 0.69), 0.70 points for Pacific (p < 0.0001, CI 0.52, 0.87), and 0.55 points for nMnP (p < 0.0001, CI 0.51, 0.58) students. For the total cohort, ethnic grouping was consistently the most significant predictor of academic outcomes. This study demonstrated clear differences in academic outcomes between both Maori and Pacific students when compared to nMnP students. Some (but not all) of the disparities between ethnic groupings could be explained by controlling for admission variables.

Bridging/foundation programmes are often provided by tertiary institutions to increase equity in access and academic performance of students from under-served communities. Little empirical evidence exists to measure the effectiveness of these bridging/foundation programmes on undergraduate academic outcomes. This research identifies the predictive effect of academic outcomes achieved within a bridging/foundation programme, targeted towards indigenous and ethnic minority students, on first-year degree-level outcomes. Overall performance within the bridging/foundation programme was positively associated with increasing Grade Point Average (GPA), "Core 4" GPA and passing all courses in first year. However, mixed associations were identified between feeder bridging/foundation courses and their intended first year course counterparts. These findings support the continued provision of bridging/foundation education; however, curricular reform within the bridging/foundation programme was required. Key developments included: restructuring course delivery; increasing constructive alignment across the curriculum; increasing cultural content within western science-orientated courses; introduction of cross-curricular assessment and use of additional innovative teaching and learning activities. Additional challenges remain for degree programmes to explore how they can change in order to better support indigenous and ethnic minority student success within first-year tertiary study.

Background: Mechanical ventilation can cause acute atrophy and injury in the diaphragm, which are related to adverse clinical results. However, the underlying mechanisms of ventilation-induced diaphragm dysfunction (VIDD) have not been well elucidated. The current study aimed to explore the role of cellular senescence in VIDD. Methods: A total of twelve New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into 2 groups: (1) spontaneously breathing anaesthetized animals (the CON group) and (2) mechanically ventilated animals (for 48 h) in V-ACV mode (the MV group). Respiratory parameters were collected during ventilation. Diaphragm were collected for further analyses. Results: Compared to those in the CON group, the percentage and density of sarcomere disruption in the MV group were much higher (p < 0.001, both). The mRNA expression of MAFbx and MuRF1 was upregulated in the MV group (p = 0.003 and p = 0.006, respectively). Compared to that in the CON group, the expression of MAFbx and MuRF1 detected by western blotting was also upregulated (p = 0.02 and p = 0.03, respectively). Moreover, RNA-seq showed that genes associated with senescence were remarkably enriched in the MV group. The mRNA expression of related genes was further verified by q-PCR (Pai1: p = 0.009; MMP9: p = 0.008). Transverse cross-sections of diaphragm myofibrils in the MV group showed more intensive positive staining of SA-βGal than those in the CON group. p53-p21 axis signalling was elevated in the MV group. The mRNA expression of p53 and p21 was significantly upregulated (p = 0.02 and p = 0.05, respectively). The western blot results also showed upregulation of p53 and p21 protein expression (p = 0.03 and p = 0.05, respectively). Moreover, the p21-positive staining in immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry in the MV group was much more intense than that in the CON group (p < 0.001, both). Conclusions: In a rabbit model, we demonstrated that mechanical ventilation in A/C mode for 48 h can still significantly induce ultrastructural damage and atrophy of the diaphragm. Moreover, p53-dependent senescence might play a role in mechanical ventilation-induced dysfunction. These findings might provide novel therapeutic targets for VIDD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of bevacizumab in 3 different application methods, subconjunctival injection (SCI), hyaluronic acid retardant (HAR), and eye drop (ED), on attenuating scar formation in the filtering bleb. Methods: Trabeculectomy (TRAB) was performed on New Zealand rabbits. TRAB rabbits were intervened with bevacizumab SCI, HAR, ED, or mitomycin C, respectively. Intraocular pressure (IOP) of 1, 7, 14, and 28 days after TRAB was recorded, and the bleb survival rate was analyzed. Bleb height, area, and vascularization were evaluated using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) at 7, 14 and 28 days after surgery. A histopathology examination of the bleb tissue was performed. The expression levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A, interleukin (IL)-1α, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were measured by Western blot. Results: Bevacizumab significantly reduced postoperative IOP and increased the survival of the filtering bleb, especially in the ED group. Less vascularization was shown in the SCI, HAR, and ED groups. Histopathological results showed the fewest levels of scarring and fibrosis in the ED group. The local VEGF-A, IL-1α, and TNF-α expression levels after bevacizumab ED were decreased, combined with suppression of TGF-β1 and α-SMA. Conclusions: Postoperative use of bevacizumab EDs was an effective application method for improving surgical outcomes after TRAB in rabbits. Background: Endometrial fibrosis may cause infertility. Accurate evaluation of endometrial fibrosis helps clinicians to schedule timely therapy. Purpose: To explore T2 mapping for assessing endometrial fibrosis. Study Type: Prospective. Population: Ninety‐seven women with severe endometrial fibrosis (SEF) and 21 patients with mild to moderate endometrial fibrosis (MMEF), diagnosed by hysteroscopy, and 37 healthy women. Field Strength/Sequence: 3T, T2‐weighted turbo spin echo (T2‐weighted imaging) and multi‐echo turbo spin echo (T2 mapping) sequences. Assessment: Endometrial MRI parameters (T2, thickness [ET], area [EA], and volume [EV]) were measured by N.Z. and Q.H. (9‐ and 4‐years' experience in pelvic MRI) and compared between the three subgroups. A multivariable model including MRI parameters and clinical variables (including age and body mass index [BMI]) was developed to predict endometrial fibrosis assessed by hysteroscopy. Statistical Tests: Kruskal–Wallis; ANOVA; Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho); area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC); binary logistic regression; intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). P value <0.05 for statistical significance. Results: Endometrial T2, ET, EA, and EV of MMEF patients (185 msec, 8.2 mm, 168 mm2, and 2181 mm3) and SEF patients (164 msec, 6.7 mm, 120 mm2, and 1762 mm3) were significantly lower than those of healthy women (222 msec, 11.7 mm, 316 mm2, and 3960 mm3). Endometrial T2 and ET of SEF patients were significantly lower than those of MMEF patients. Endometrial T2, ET, EA, and EV were significantly correlated to the degree of endometrial fibrosis (rho = −0.623, −0.695, −0.694, −0.595). There were significant strong correlations between ET, EA, and EV in healthy women and MMEF patients (rho = 0.850–0.908). Endometrial MRI parameters and the multivariable model accurately distinguished MMEF or SEF from normal endometrium (AUCs >0.800). Age, BMI, and MRI parameters in univariable analysis and age and T2 in multivariable analysis significantly predicted endometrial fibrosis. The reproducibility of MRI parameters was excellent (ICC, 0.859–0.980). Data Conclusion: T2 mapping has potential to noninvasively and quantitatively evaluate the degree of endometrial fibrosis. Typhoon‐induced landslides are widespread, damaging and deadly. In this study, we elucidated their spatiotemporal features through investigations in Southeast coastal China and proposed a numerical model that involves typhoon wind load, preferential infiltration and root reinforcement. The wind load is calculated through a combination of the autoregressive method and a multi‐degree‐of‐freedom tree swaying mode, transmitting to the slope through the wind–tree interaction. Taproots of trees are modelled as piles, and root–soil interfaces are modelled as preferential infiltration boundaries. Using the numerical model, we quantitatively assessed the impacts of wind load, rainfall infiltration and root reinforcement on the slope stability and compared results with cases in Waipaoa and Wairoa (New Zealand). Results suggest that the impacts of trees depend heavily on meteorological and geological conditions. Trees play a destabilizing role in Southeast China during a typhoon but a stabilizing role in the cases in New Zealand. For slopes in Southeast China with a thick soil layer (>root depth), strong wind load and preferential flow resulting from root–soil interfaces, rather than slope surface infiltration, significantly decrease the slope stability in a short time. Slope failure occurred in all scenarios that account for the preferential infiltration, and its combination with a Force 14 typhoon wind load can fail the slope at 10 h after the typhoon initiation. Differently, tree roots in cases in New Zealand can penetrate through the thin soil layer (<1 m) and provide considerable additional resistance to stabilize the slope. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2-D SWE) has been proven to detect hyperlipidemia-induced elastic abnormality in the corpus cavernosum. This study investigated cytological factors affecting the elasticity of the corpus cavernosum in rabbits with hyperlipidemia using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). Male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into a hyperlipidemia group (high-cholesterol diet) and a control group (standard diet). Penile 2-D SWE was performed to detect the elastic abnormality in the corpus cavernosum. ScRNA-seq was performed to observe cellular changes in the corpus cavernosum of rabbits with hyperlipidemia. Immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and histological examinations were conducted to verify the results of scRNA-seq. Two-dimensional SWE revealed that the Young's modulus of the corpus cavernosum was significantly greater in the hyperlipidemia group than that in the control group (p < 0.001). Histological findings revealed extracellular matrix accumulation within the corpus cavernosum, with stronger staining of collagen types I and Ⅲ. ScRNA-seq revealed that fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, and endothelial cells were the major cell types in the corpus cavernosum. A novel subtype of fibroblasts (myofibroblast) was discovered in the hyperlipidemia group, which was verified by immunofluorescence staining and gene ontology analysis. Fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells were three cellular sources for myofibroblasts. Myofibroblasts are activated and proliferate and secrete large amounts of collagen fibers in the corpus cavernosum during hyperlipidemia, leading to abnormal Young's modulus detected by 2-D SWE and their recognition as a new factor affecting the hyperlipidemia-induced elastic abnormality of the corpus cavernosum. Aims: To examine the frequency of promotions on breakfast cereals and drinks in a major New Zealand supermarket chain, determine the healthiness of promoted versus non‐promoted products, and quantify the effects of promotions on sales. Methods: Weekly data on product promotions and sales were collected in six Auckland supermarkets for 198 breakfast products over 12 weeks. The healthiness of products was determined using the Health Star Rating system, and the effect of promotions on sales was estimated using linear mixed models. Results: On average, 47% of breakfast products in a given week were promoted using on‐shelf tickets, 12% in weekly mailers, and 9% via promotional displays. The healthiness of promoted and non‐promoted breakfast products was comparable. In relation to weekly sales of non‐promoted products, all three promotional strategies had substantial (2 to 2.5 times higher sales) and statistically significant (P < 0.001) effects on product sales. Conclusion: Promotions are frequently used and effective at increasing sales. Marketing strategies focusing solely on promoting healthier products could be an important nudging strategy to improve the healthiness of supermarket food purchases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Highlights: Animal models are applied to evaluate the biosecurity and biocompatibility of the zinc-ion batteries with the electrolytes of different zinc salts. Leakage scene simulations and histological analysis are employed in investigating the tissue response after battery implantations, in which ZnSO4 exhibits higher biosecurity. Sn hetero nucleus is introduced to stabilize the zinc anode, which not only facilitates the planar zinc deposition, but also contributes to higher hydrogen evolution overpotential. Biocompatible devices are widely employed in modernized lives and medical fields in the forms of wearable and implantable devices, raising higher requirements on the battery biocompatibility, high safety, low cost, and excellent electrochemical performance, which become the evaluation criteria toward developing feasible biocompatible batteries. Herein, through conducting the battery implantation tests and leakage scene simulations on New Zealand rabbits, zinc sulfate electrolyte is proved to exhibit higher biosecurity and turns out to be one of the ideal zinc salts for biocompatible zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). Furthermore, in order to mitigate the notorious dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution in mildly acidic electrolyte as well as improve their operating stability, Sn hetero nucleus is introduced to stabilize the zinc anode, which not only facilitates the planar zinc deposition, but also contributes to higher hydrogen evolution overpotential. Finally, a long lifetime of 1500 h for the symmetrical cell, the specific capacity of 150 mAh g−1 under 0.5 A g−1 for the Zn–MnO2 battery and 212 mAh g−1 under 5 A g−1 for the Zn—NH4V4O10 battery are obtained. Objective: To investigate whether the use of a simple baseline measurement predicts venous leg ulcer healing at 12 and 24 weeks. Method: This was a secondary analysis of a cohort of four randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of treatments adjuvant to compression. Self-reported ulcer duration, and measured ulcer length and width, to calculate estimated ulcer area, were used to obtain a Margolis index score. The score created three prognostic strata for likelihood to heal within 24 weeks, and the number of participants healed and time-to-healing were compared. Results: There were a total of 802 participants across the four RCTs—408 (50.9%) in two 12-week trials and 394 (49.1%) in two 24-week trials. The mean age of participants was 63.7±17.6 years, and 372 were female (46.4%). The Margolis index score at baseline was 0 for 320 participants (predicted normal healing); 1 for 334 participants; and 2 for 148 participants (both 1 and 2 predicted slow-to-heal). Overall, 248 (77.5%) of those participants who scored 0 at baseline healed within 24 weeks, compared with 182 (54.5%) of participants who scored 1, and 30 (20.3%) participants who scored 2. The median time-to-healing was 40 (24–62) days, 57 (35–100) days and 86.5 (56–151) days, respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.69 and 0.77, respectively, for the 12 and 24 week trials. Conclusion: A simple baseline index identifies participants with normal or slow-to-heal wounds and could be used to demonstrate prognostic balance between treatment groups in trials. This approach could also be used in clinical practice to assist with managing expectations and for early identification of patients who may best benefit from adjuvant treatments. Objective: Our aim was to evaluate the capacity of the human salivary histatin-1-functionalized methacrylic gelatin scaffold to control osteochondral tissue regeneration and repair in vivo in rabbits with major temporomandibular joint dimensional abnormalities. Materials and Methods: In order to compare human salivary histatin-1-functionalized methacrylic gelatin scaffolds to the Blank and Gel-MA hydrogel groups, scaffolds were implanted into osteochondral lesions of a critical size (3 × 3 mm) in the anterior region of the condyle of the temporomandibular joint in New Zealand white rabbits. At 4 weeks after implantation, the repair was evaluated using macroscopic examination, histology, and micro-CT analysis. Results: In the comparison of the composite scaffold group with the Blank and Gel-MA groups, analysis of the healed tissue revealed an improved macroscopic appearance in the composite scaffold group. Regeneration was induced by host cell migration in the Hst1/Gel-MA scaffold group. Conclusions: The current study offers a viable method for in vivo cartilage repair that does not require cell transplantation. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most prevalent type of retinal vasculopathy and the most widespread cause of preventable blindness in adults. Excessive increases in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and vascular endothelial growth factor are major initiators and drivers of DR progression, respectively. However, current DR treatment options remain limited, particularly for early DR. Nanotechnology‐mediated antioxidant strategies are gaining increasing popularity to treat ocular diseases. Quercetin has excellent ROS scavenging efficiency but poor stability and low bioavailability in physiological environments. In this study, ultrasmall Fe‐Quer nanozymes (NZs) formed by coupling quercetin with low‐toxic iron ions are reported that can mimic the activities of three important antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase, thereby exhibiting excellent water dispersion and efficient ROS scavenging ability. In vitro and in vivo assays validate the effects of Fe‐Quer NZs against inflammation, oxidative stress damage, microvascular leakage, and angiogenesis, particularly their vascular protective effect in early DR. Transcriptomic analysis further reveals a potential multitarget‐specific therapeutic mechanism of Fe‐Quer NZs against DR. These observations open avenues for Fe‐Quer NZs, composed of molecules of a natural product and metal ions with artificial NZ activity, as microvascular protective agents for DR and other ROS‐related diseases. Based on gain and loss spiral principles from Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, we examined change‐related reciprocal relations between three key resources (i.e. self‐esteem, sense of belonging and perceived social support) and job insecurity. We adopted a latent change score (LCS) approach and examined the loss and gain spirals with a seven‐wave longitudinal dataset from the New Zealand Attitudes and Values Study (N = 6518). The LCS models indicated that: (1) self‐esteem predicts decreased job insecurity, but not vice versa, (2) sense of belonging predicts decreased job insecurity, but not vice versa and (3) there is a change‐related reciprocal relationship between perceived social support and job insecurity. Inconsistent with the primacy of resource loss proposed by COR theory, we also confirm that the effects of self‐esteem, sense of belonging and perceived social support on changes in job insecurity (i.e., gain spirals) are stronger than the effects of job insecurity on changes in these three resources (i.e., loss spirals). These findings provide a cautionary note to previous research based on cross‐sectional or lagged designs and using regression or (traditional or random intercept) cross‐lagged analyses. We investigate the tidal displacement signals of two principle semidiurnal ( M 2 ) and diurnal ( O 1 ) tidal constituents in New Zealand. We calculate the predicted loading displacements using the latest ocean tide models and Earth models. The results show that, for the M 2 constituent, the tide models FES2014b and TPXO9-Atlas have subtle differences, and the vector differences between the Earth models shows that the regularity of the influence of the Earth model is weak. The vector difference of O 1 constituent have significant spatial coherence (about 0.2 mm). The residuals of M 2 constituent in the up component subtract about 0.2 mm across the entire areas after considering the anelastic dispersion. We find that the clear regional-scale spatial coherence of the residuals exists in both constituents in all models even if spatial water density and compressibility have been considered. However, the spatial coherence of residuals disappears when the network-mean value removed, and the reduction of RMS for O 1 constituent is close to the theoretical error of body tide (about 0.5 mm). We also find that for the different ocean tide models, part of the differences in residuals between the observations and predictions would be attributed to the choice of geocentric reference frame. Objective: There is lack of an internal fixation following resection of a dumbbell tumor by hemi‐laminectomy and facetectomy that achieves adequate stability with less trauma. Unilateral fixation and reconstruction (unilateral pedicle screw and contralateral lamina screw fixation combined with lateral mass reconstruction, UPS + CLS + LM) may be an ideal technique to address this problem. A biomechanical comparison and a case report were designed to evaluate its spinal stability and clinical effect. Methods: Seven fresh‐frozen human subcervical specimens were used for the biomechanical testing. The conditions tested were: (1) intact; (2) injured (single‐level hemi‐laminectomy and facetectomy); (3) unilateral pedicle screw (UPS) fixation; (4) UPS fixation combined with lateral mass (LM) reconstruction (UPS + LM); (5) UPS fixation and contralateral lamina screw fixation (UPS + CLS); (6) UPS + CLS + LM; (7) UPS fixation and contralateral transarticular screw fixation (UPS + CTAS); (8) bilateral pedicle screw (BPS) fixation. Range of motion (ROM) and neutral zone (NZ) were obtained at C5‐C7 segment under eight conditions. In addition, we report the case of a patient with a C7‐T1 dumbbell tumor that was treated by UPS + CLS + LM technique. Results: Except left/right lateral bending and right axial rotation (all, p < 0.05), ROM of UPS + CLS + LM condition in other directions was similar to that of BPS condition (all, p > 0.05). There was no significant difference between UPS + CLS + LM and the UPS + CTAS condition in other directions of ROM (all, p > 0.05), except in left/right axial rotation (both, p < 0.05). Compared to UPS + CLS condition, left/right lateral bending ROM of UPS + CLS + LM condition were significantly reduced (both, p < 0.05). UPS + CLS + LM condition significantly reduced ROM in all directions compared to UPS and UPS + LM condition (all, p < 0.05). Similarly, except lateral bending (p < 0.05), there was no difference in NZ in other directions between UPS + CLS + LM and BPS condition (both, p > 0.05). There was no significant difference between UPS + CLS + LM and UPS + CTAS condition in NZ in all directions (all, p > 0.05). Axial rotation NZ of UPS + CLS + LM condition was significantly reduced compared to UPS + CLS condition (p < 0.05). Compared to UPS and UPS + LM condition, NZ of UPS + CLS + LM condition was significantly reduced in all directions (all, p < 0.05). The patient's imaging examination at 3 months postoperatively indicated that the internal fixation did not move and the graft bone was seen with fusion. Conclusion: After resection of a dumbbell tumor in the cervical spine, UPS + CLS + LM technique is a reliable internal fixation method to provide sufficient immediate stability and promote postoperative bone fusion. Purpose. We investigate the associations between incivility from multiple sources (i.e., doctors, supervisors, fellow nurses, and patients/visitors) and nurse turnover intentions. We take a self-determination perspective to explore whether psychological needs for autonomy, belongingness, and competence explain the relationship between incivility and turnover intentions. Finally, we examine whether incivility from doctors, supervisors, fellow nurses, and patients/visitors may primarily relate to one of the three basic psychological needs and whether the autonomy need may have the strongest relationship with turnover intentions. Design. A three-wave time-lagged design was used. Each measurement point was separated by one workweek. New Zealand nurses were asked to evaluate their workplace incivility at Time 1, three basic psychological needs at Time 2, and turnover intentions at Time 3. Findings. Supervisor incivility directly related to turnover intentions. The autonomy need was the only significant mechanism underlying the relationships of incivility from doctors, supervisors, and fellow nurses with turnover intentions. In addition, doctor incivility related to the autonomy need, patient/visitor incivility was not significantly related to any psychological needs, and incivility from fellow nurses and supervisors related to psychological needs for belongingness and autonomy. Originality. This study takes a multifoci perspective to examine nurse incivility from multiple sources. The novelty lies in the introduction of self-determination theory to the understanding of workplace incivility. Finally, we turn the spotlight on the importance of examining whether incivility from different sources may be primarily related to different psychological needs and whether the autonomy need plays a key role in turnover intentions. Background: The incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) has increased steadily over the past few decades. Elucidating its global burden will facilitate more effective disease management and improve patient outcomes. We explored the disease burden, risk factors, and trends in incidence and mortality in NHL globally. Methods: The up-to-date data on age-standardized incidence and mortality rates of NHL were retrieved from the GLOBOCAN 2020, CI5 volumes I-XI, WHO mortality database, and Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019, focusing on geographic disparities worldwide. We reported incidence and mortality by sex and age, along with corresponding age-standardized rates (ASRs), the average annual percentage change (AAPC), and future burden estimates to 2040. Results: In 2020, there were an estimated 545,000 new cases and 260,000 deaths of NHL globally. In addition, NHL resulted in 8,650,352 age-standardized DALYs in 2019 worldwide. The age-specific incidence rates varied drastically across world areas, at least 10-fold in both sexes, with the most pronounced increase trend found in Australia and New Zealand. By contrast, North African countries faced a more significant mortality burden (ASR, 3.7 per 100,000) than highly developed countries. In the past decades, the pace of increase in incidence and mortality accelerated, with the highest AAPC of 4.9 (95%CI: 3.6-6.2) and 6.8 (95%CI: 4.3-9.2) in the elderly population, respectively. Considering risk factors, obesity was positively correlated with age-standardized incidence rates (P< 0.001). And North America was the high-risk region for DALYs due to the high body mass index in 2019. Regarding demographic change, NHL incident cases are projected to rise to approximately 778,000 by 2040. Conclusion: In this pooled analysis, we provided evidence for the growing incidence trends in NHL, particularly among women, older adults, obese populations, and HIV-infected people. And the marked increase in the older population is still a public health issue that requires more attention. Future efforts should be directed at cultivating health awareness and formulating effective and locally tailored cancer prevention strategies, especially in most developing countries. Purpose: Rotator cuff tendon–bone healing often leads to scarring and low biomechanical strength, resulting in a tendency to re-tear. This study examined whether combining autologous osteochondral transplantation and periosteum transplantation increases fibrocartilage transition zone regeneration and improves biomechanical fixation. Methods: A total of 48 New Zealand white rabbits were divided into the periosteum, autologous osteochondral, combination of autologous osteochondral and periosteum, and control groups. The supraspinatus tendon was cut from the greater tuberosity and repaired by different transplants. A total of 12 rabbits were used for histological examination (haematoxylin and eosin staining, Masson's staining and Safranin-O staining) at 4, 8 and 12 weeks after the repair, and 36 rabbits were used for biomechanical tests (maximal failure load and stiffness). Results: At 4 weeks following the operation, each group had a large tendon–bone gap with a small number of disordered collagen fibres. At 8 weeks, the tendon–bone gap was smaller than that before the operation, and the tendon–bone gap in each experimental group was smaller with neater and denser collagen fibres and chondrocytes than in the control group, with the osteochondral combined periosteum group having the best results. At 12 weeks, the typical tendon–bone transitional structure was observed in the osteochondral combined periosteum group, and more collagen fibres and chondrocytes were generated in each group. The osteochondral combined periosteum group had the largest staining area and the largest amount of cartilage. The maximum tensile strength and stiffness of each group increased over time. There was no significant difference in each group's maximum tensile strength and stiffness at 4 weeks after the operation. However, the maximum tensile strength and stiffness of the osteochondral combined periosteum group at 8 and 12 weeks after operation were significantly higher than those of other groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Histological and biomechanical results show that autologous osteochondral transplantation combined with periosteum transplantation can effectively promote the regeneration of fibrous cartilage in the tendon–bone junction of the rotator cuff. The paper offers a neo-Marxist framework of interculturalisation to accommodate the increasing cultural diversity in the internationalisation of higher education with specific reference to Chinese students in New Zealand. At present, there are few official strategies in place to provide for the needs of international students in New Zealand universities. Tolerance is often promoted to cope with differences in general, but this notion is not sufficient to embrace and encourage cultural diversity in higher education. The paper reviews neoliberal and neo-Marxist perspectives of interculturalism/interculturalisation. In order to move beyond mere tolerance of cultural diversity, which is seen as a problem to be overcome, the paper concludes that a national and institutional policy for internationalisation in higher education should be underpinned by neo-Marxist principles of interculturalism.

This paper presents a model of practice for analysing the internationalisation of higher education, and for better providing teaching service and support to both the internal and external other. It is derived from the theoretical analysis of the rationales, concepts and developments of the internationalisation of higher education, and from a New Zealand case study that exemplifies the current trend in the internationalisation of higher education--a shift from aid to trade. In the paper, the author examines the impacts of globalisation and the knowledge economy on the shifting currency of the rationales. The paper concludes that, because of increasing numbers of resident immigrant students, "the international (other)" is no longer beyond national borders but is within them. Therefore, universities would do well to revisit neglected social and cultural dimensions in the provision of higher education services.

The RT3 is a relatively new triaxial accelerometer that has replaced the TriTrac. The aim of this study was to validate the RT3 against doubly labeled water (DLW) in a free-living, mixed weight sample of adults. Total energy expenditure (TEE) was measured over a 15-day period using DLW. Activity-related energy expenditure (AEE) was estimated by subtracting resting energy expenditure and thermic effect of feeding from TEE. The RT3 triaxial accelerometer was worn over 14 consecutive days. TEE and AEE were estimated using the RT3 proprietary equation. Thirty-six adults ages 18-56 years (56% women) with an average weight of 75.9 kg (SD = 14.8) completed all measurements. Compared to DLW, the RT3 underestimated TEE by 539 kJ (4%) and AEE by 485 kJ (15%) on average. The RT3 provided a relatively accurate assessment of free-living activity-related energy expenditure at the group level and generally underestimated total and activity-related energy expenditure compared to DLW. This article discusses the concept and the rationales for the internationalisation of higher education. In particular, the impacts of globalisation and the knowledge economy upon the internationalisation of higher education are examined. The study suggests that the internationalisation of higher education is becoming increasingly dominated by economic imperatives that focus on exporting education and generating income from overseas students. What is currently overlooked is that "internationalisation" is occurring not only beyond but also within national borders. A practice model is proposed for helping higher education institutions analyse the internationalisation of higher education from four rationales to develop more inclusive internationalisation policies and strategies. This paper investigates intercultural communication and its significance to higher education. The paper briefly discusses culture, subculture and the meeting of cultures. It also provides a brief survey of developments in intercultural communication research. With reference to New Zealand, the paper further points to some limitations of intercultural communication theories, but meanwhile acknowledges the significance of these theories to higher education. The author argues that adopting interculturalism based on the principles of equality and respect at the national and institutional levels is more crucial than merely mastering some intercultural competencies or applying some intercultural communication models outlined in intercultural communication theories. This article critiques the notion of multiculturalism, which aims to assimilate minority cultures into a dominant culture rather than genuinely accept their "differences". Therefore, the author proposes interculturalism as a policy for the multicultural campus because it values equitable treatment of all cultures. Recent years have witnessed an influx of international students into New Zealand's higher education institutions. The author asks whether these institutions have adequate strategies to accommodate the increasing cultural diversity on campus. Through a comparative analysis of multiculturalism and interculturalism, the author sees interculturalisation as an emancipatory process that should be supported, as it emphasises non-discriminative cultural reciprocity based on equality and respect. Background: A healthy lifestyle program that appeals to, and supports, overweight and obese New Zealand (NZ) European, Māori (indigenous) and Pasifika men to achieve weight loss is urgently needed. A pilot program inspired by the successful Football Fans in Training program but delivered via professional rugby clubs in NZ (n = 96) was shown to be effective in weight loss, adherence to healthy lifestyle behaviors, and cardiorespiratory fitness in overweight and obese men. A full effectiveness trial is now needed. Aims: To determine the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of Rugby Fans In Training-NZ (RUFIT-NZ) on weight loss, fitness, blood pressure, lifestyle change, and health related quality of life (HRQoL) at 12- and 52-weeks. Methods: We conducted a pragmatic, two-arm, multi-center, randomized controlled trial in NZ with 378 (target 308) overweight and obese men aged 30–65 years, randomized to an intervention group or wait-list control group. The 12-week RUFIT-NZ program was a gender-sensitised, healthy lifestyle intervention delivered through professional rugby clubs. Each intervention session included: i) a 1-h workshop-based education component focused on nutrition, physical activity, sleep, sedentary behavior, and learning evidence-based behavior change strategies for sustaining a healthier lifestyle; and 2) a 1-h group-based, but individually tailored, exercise training session. The control group were offered RUFIT-NZ after 52-weeks. The primary outcome was change in body weight from baseline to 52-weeks. Secondary outcomes included change in body weight at 12-weeks, waist circumference, blood pressure, fitness (cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal), lifestyle behaviors (leisure-time physical activity, sleep, smoking status, and alcohol and dietary quality), and health-related quality of life at 12- and 52-weeks. Results: Our final analysis included 200 participants (intervention n = 103; control n = 97) who were able to complete the RUFIT-NZ intervention prior to COVID-19 restrictions. At 52-weeks, the adjusted mean group difference in weight change (primary outcome) was -2.77 kg (95% CI -4.92 to -0.61), which favored the intervention group. The intervention also resulted in favorable significant differences in weight change and fruit and vegetable consumption at 12-weeks; and waist circumference, fitness outcomes, physical activity levels, and health-related quality of life at both 12 and 52 weeks. No significant intervention effects were observed for blood pressure, or sleep. Incremental cost-effective ratios estimated were $259 per kg lost, or $40,269 per quality adjusted life year (QALY) gained. Conclusion: RUFIT-NZ resulted in sustained positive changes in weight, waist circumference, physical fitness, self-reported physical activity, selected dietary outcomes, and health-related quality of life in overweight/obese men. As such, the program should be recommended for sustained delivery beyond this trial, involving other rugby clubs across NZ. Background: Because of the low regeneration efficiency and unclear underlying molecular mechanism, tooth regeneration applications are limited. In this study, we explored the influence of residual periodontal ligament on the dentin regeneration potential of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) in the jaw. Methods: To establish a tooth regeneration model, the incisors of New Zealand white rabbits were extracted while preserving residual periodontal ligament, followed by the implantation of DPSCs. After 3 months, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to observe the volume, morphology and microstructure of regenerated tissue. Histological staining and immunostaining analyses were used to observe the morphological characteristics and expression of the dentin-specific proteins DMP1 and DSPP. To explore the mechanism, DPSCs and periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) were cocultured in vitro, and RNA was collected from the DPSCs for RNA-seq and bioinformatic analysis. Results: The results of micro-CT and stereomicroscopy showed that the number of sites with regeneration and the volume of regenerated tissue in the DPSCs/PDL group (6/8, 1.07 ± 0.93 cm3) were larger than those in the DPSCs group (3/8, 0.23 ± 0.41 cm3). The results of SEM showed that the regenerated dentin-like tissue in the DPSCs and DPSCs/PDL groups contained dentin tubules. Haematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemical staining indicated that compared with the DPSCs group, the DPSCs/PDL group showed more regular regenerated tissue and higher expression levels of the dentin-specific proteins DMP1 and DSPP (DMP1: P = 0.02, DSPP: P = 0.01). RNA-seq showed that the coculture of DPSCs with PDLSCs resulted in the DPSCs differentially expressing 427 mRNAs (285 upregulated and 142 downregulated), 41 lncRNAs (26 upregulated and 15 downregulated), 411 circRNAs (224 upregulated and 187 downregulated), and 19 miRNAs (13 upregulated and 5 downregulated). Bioinformatic analysis revealed related Gene Ontology function and signalling pathways, including extracellular matrix (ECM), tumour necrosis factor (TNF) signalling and chemokine signalling pathways. Conclusions: Residual periodontal ligament in the extraction socket promotes the dentin regeneration potential of DPSCs in the jaw. The magnesium alloy was made into orthopedic steel plates to repair tibial fractures of New Zealand white rabbits and to explore the biocompatibility, degradation behavior, and mechanical properties of the magnesium alloy plates in repairing fractures in vivo. Fifty-four rabbits were randomly divided into experimental, control, and sham-operated groups. Tibial fractures in the experimental and the control groups were fixed with magnesium alloy and titanium alloy plates, respectively, and only bone tunnels were established without any implants in the sham-operated group. The concentrations of serum alanine transaminase, creatinine (CREA), creatine kinase (CK), and magnesium ion were measured before and 1 day, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 weeks after operation, respectively, to evaluate the biocompatibility of magnesium alloy plates. The corrosion products and components were observed using a scanning electron microscope with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy system, and the corrosion rate was observed by weight loss testing. Then the degradation behavior of magnesium alloy plate was analyzed. Analysis of mechanical properties of magnesium alloy plates was done by four-point bending tests. There were no statistically significant differences in serum alanine transaminase, CREA, or CK at each time point among the three groups (P > 0.05). The degradation behavior of the magnesium alloy plates increased with the longer implantation time. The four-point bending test results indicated that the mechanical properties of magnesium alloy plates decreased gradually during the degradation. The results showed that magnesium alloy plates implanted into rabbit tibias degrade gradually with the implantation time, and the mechanical properties of the magnesium alloy weaken gradually during the degradation. To investigate the role of tracheal wall injury in the development of benign airway stenosis in rabbits. Prospective study. We injured the tracheal walls of 28 New Zealand white rabbits using four different methods. Experimental group: Group A (n = 7, mild injury of tracheal mucosa by ordinary brush under bronchoscopy); Group B (n = 7, severe injury of tracheal mucosa by nylon brush under tracheotomy); Group C (n = 7, tracheal cartilage was injured by vascular clamp after tracheotomy); Group D (n = 7, the tracheal cartilage was injured with vascular forceps and the tracheal mucosa was injured with a nylon brush after tracheotomy). Bronchoscopy was performed on each experimental rabbit at 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks after operation. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and endobronchial optical coherence tomography (EB-OCT) were performed at 4 weeks, and the rabbits were sacrificed after the examination. Their gross and histological findings were comparatively determined whether the experimental rabbit stenosis was established. No airway stenosis was observed in group A. In group B, 28.57% of experimental rabbits developed tracheal stenosis (granulation tissue proliferation was observed in rabbits No. 2 and No. 6 at 1, 2 and 3 weeks after operation, and the tracheal scar contracture was observed in No.6 rabbit at 4 weeks after operation). Fourteen rabbits in group C and group D had tracheal stenosis caused by granulation tissue proliferation at 1, 2 and 3 weeks after operation. At the fourth week after operation, 71.43% of experimental rabbits had tracheal stenosis due to granulation tissue hyperplasia, 7.14% of experimental rabbits had tracheal stenosis due to scar contracture and granulation hyperplasia, and 21.43% of experimental rabbits had tracheal stenosis due to scar contracture. EB-OCT scan showed that the cartilage layer with low signal reflection band was discontinuous. The injury of cartilage is the key factor of benign airway stenosis. Acute injury of airway mucosa alone is unlikely to cause airway stenosis, but combined with cartilage injury may aggravate airway stenosis. EB-OCT can clearly identify the airway layers of rabbits, which is helpful to evaluate the damage of tracheal cartilage and mucosa. The liver is the most complex vascular anatomy of all human organs, with extremely rich blood flow and fragile texture. Massive liver bleeding usually occurs after traumatic liver injury, causing severe systematic issues. Thus, bleeding control is critical in hindering mortality rates and complications in patients. In this study, non-compression hemostasis materials based on chitosan lactate particles (CLP) were developed for handling liver bleeding after injuries. CLP showed good blood biocompatibility and antibacterial performance against S. aureus. Taking advantage of the vital capacity of CLP to promote red blood cell and platelet adhesion, CLP exhibited in vivo homeostasis properties as non-compression hemostasis materials for traumatic liver injury, both in SD rats, New Zealand rabbits, or in beagles. Background: Understanding which group of patients with type 2 diabetes will have the most glucose lowering response to certain medications (which target different aspects of glucose metabolism) is the first step in precision medicine. Aims: We hypothesized that people with type 2 diabetes who generally have high insulin resistance, such as people of Mā ori/Pacific ethnicity, and those with obesity and/or hypertriglyceridemia (OHTG), would have greater glucoselowering by pioglitazone (an insulin sensitizer) versus vildagliptin (an insulin secretagogue). Methods: A randomised, open-label, two-period crossover trial was conducted in New Zealand. Adults with type 2 diabetes, HbA1c>58mmol/mol (>7.5%), received 16 weeks of either pioglitazone (30mg) or vildagliptin (50mg) daily, then switched to the other medication over for another 16 weeks of treatment. Differences in HbA1c were tested for interaction with ethnicity or OHTG, controlling for baseline HbA1c using linear mixed models. Secondary outcomes included weight, blood pressure, side-effects and diabetes treatment satisfaction. Results: 346 participants were randomised (55% Mā ori/Pacific) between February 2019 to March 2020. HbA1c after pioglitazone was lower than after vildagliptin (mean difference -4.9mmol/mol [0.5%]; 95% CI -6.3, -3.5; p<0.0001). Primary intention-to-treat analysis showed no significant interaction effect by Mā ori/Pacific vs other ethnicity (1.5mmol/mol [0.1%], 95% CI -0.8, 3.7), and per-protocol analysis (-1.2mmol/mol [0.1%], 95% CI -4.1, 1.7). An interaction effect (-4.7mmol/mol [0.5%], 95% CI -8.1, -1.4) was found by OHTG status. Both treatments generated similar treatment satisfaction scores, although there was greater weight gain and greater improvement in lipids and liver enzymes after pioglitazone than vildagliptin. Conclusions: Comparative glucose-lowering by pioglitazone and vildagliptin is not different between Mā ori/Pacific people compared with other New Zealand ethnic groups. Spinal cord reperfusion injury as a secondary damage after primary spinal cord injury is an important factor causing nerve cell damage. In this study, we aim to investigate the effects and mechanisms of tanshinone (TAE) in the rabbit spinal cord during ischemia-reperfusion. New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups: sham-operated group (5 rabbits), ischemia-reperfusion group (0.9% TAE was administered intraperitoneally 30 min before ischemia, and 4 groups of 5 rabbits each according to different time periods of reperfusion: group A reperfused for 0.5 h, group B reperfused for 2 h, group C reperfused for 8 h, and group D reperfused for 24 h), and TAE group (an ischemia-reperfused for 24 h). Group A was reperfused for 0.5 h, group B for 2 h, group C for 8 h, group D for 24 h, and group TAE (TAE was applied 30 min before ischemia reperfusion, grouped as ischemia-reperfusion group). The expression of JNK (c-Jun NH2-terminal Kinase) and phosphorylation-JNK (p-JNK) in spinal cord tissues of each group were detected by Western blot. Light and electron microscopy showed that early apoptosis started in group B in the ischemia-reperfusion group, while early apoptosis appeared only in group D in the tanshinone intervention group. Western blot showed that p-JNK expression started in group B in the ischemia-reperfusion group and gradually increased with the prolongation of ischemia time, while p-JNK expression only increased in group D in the tanshinone intervention group. In the tanshinone intervention group, p-JNK was activated only in group D and its activity was less than that in the ischemia-reperfusion group; the protein expression of JNK did not change significantly in both groups. Spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion can cause spinal cord injury by activating the signaling molecule JNK (MRPKs family), and early tanshinone intervention can partially inhibit this injury. Background: In molecular biology studies, the selection of optimal reference genes is of vital importance for accurately quantifying gene expression. The purpose of the present study was to screen the most stable reference genes in different muscle tissues of New Zealand white rabbits and Yufeng yellow rabbits. Methods and results: Results indicated that the most stable reference genes in the muscle tissues of New Zealand white rabbits were HPRT1, ACTB and PPIC, while HPRT1, PPIC, and RPL13A were the most stable reference genes in muscle tissues of Yufeng yellow rabbits. However, in the longissimus dorsi muscle and the abdominal wall muscle of both varieties, the most stable reference genes were HPRT1, RPL13A, and SDHA. In the quadriceps femoris muscle, the most stable reference genes were ACTB, HPRT1, and SDHA. Furthermore, the relative abundance of MYOG, MYH3 and MSTN was used to confirm the suitability and reliability of the selected most stable reference genes and the most unstable reference gene. Results revealed the same expression patterns of these myogenic genes when normalized according to the most stable genes, while normalization against the unstable reference gene altered the observed expression patterns. Conclusions: Taken together, our results demonstrated that the most stable reference genes varied among different muscle tissues and different breeds of rabbits. However, HPRT1, PPIC and SDHA presented high stability among all examined reference genes; thus, the combined analysis of HPRT1/ PPIC/ SDHA gene provides the best reference for RT-qPCR in muscle tissues of New Zealand white rabbits and Yufeng yellow rabbits, while HPRT1 is a better choice than other reference genes when using a single reference gene to assess target gene expression. Background: Corneal neovascularization (CNV) is an important disease that causes blindness. Secretogranin III (Scg3) has emerged as a new influencing factor of neovascularization. This study analyzed the Scg3 antibody's inhibitory effect on CNV and and explored its preliminary mechanism.Methods: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were treated with Scg3 and anti-Scg3. Cell proliferation, wound healing migration and tube formation assays were performed. Healthy adult New Zealand rabbits were randomly selected to be alkali burned and establish the corneal neovascularization (CNV) model. The rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups (the high concentration group, low concentration group and control group). Different doses of anti-Scg3 and PBS were administered to the rabbits. Clinical examinations, immunostaining, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and western blotting analyses were performed postoperatively.Results: In the in vitro study, the Scg3 antibody mixture inhibited Scg3-induced endothelial cell proliferation and angiogenesis. In the in vivo study, significant CNV was observed in the control group. Confocal microscopy also revealed considerable active neovascularization in the control group. There was no obvious CNV growth in the high concentration group. Additionally, CD31, LYVE1 and CD45 expression was significantly inhibited after treatment with a high concentration of Scg3 antibody. The qPCR and western blotting analyses revealed that the levels of ERK in the low concentration group and high concentration group were higher than those in the control group at 7 days and 14 days. The levels of VEGF in the control group were significantly increased compared with those in the high concentration group. In all three groups, the levels of Akt were not significantly different at any time point.Conclusion: The expression of Scg3 could affect the growth of HUVECs in vitro. Treatment with a high concentration (0.5 µg/mL) of Scg3 antibody reduced the inflammatory response and inhibited the growth of corneal neovascularization after corneal alkali burn injury in rabbits. The wedge-tailed green pigeon (Treron sphenurus) has a protective value in the evolution of the family Columbidae. In this study, the complete mitogenome of T. sphenurus from Baise City, China, which represents the first sequenced species of the genus Treron in Tribe Treronini, is reported. This was accomplished using PCR-based methods and a primer-walking sequencing strategy with genus-specific primers. The mitogenome was found to be 18,919 bp in length comprising 37 genes, including 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, and one control region. In terms of structure and composition, many similarities were found between the T. sphenurus and Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae (New Zealand pigeon) mitogenomes. This was further supported by phylogenetic analysis showing that T. sphenurus has a close evolutionary relationship with H. novaeseelandiae. The complete mitogenome of T. sphenurus reported here is expected to provide valuable molecular information for further studies on the phylogeny of the genus Treron and for analyses of the taxonomic status of the family Columbidae. Little is known about the Paleocene in the southern Pacific Ocean due to scarce marine records. Here, we present a systematic geochemical investigation using biomarkers, carbonate content, and carbon isotopes of a set of early Paleocene deep-sea cores from International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 378 Site U1553. The results provide a new Paleocene biomarker profile for the Campbell Plateau, New Zealand. The occurrence and distribution of a series of hopenes, ββ hopanes, sterenes and biomarker-based maturity parameters indicate that these organically-lean sediments are in an early diagenetic stage, with an equivalent vitrinite reflectance of approximately 0.4%. Biomarker data (e.g., gammacerane index and homohopane index), carbonate carbon isotopes (−27.9 ‰ to +2.0 ‰) combined with onboard data (sulphur and methane contents) indicate that the redox properties of the Paleocene southern Pacific Ocean changed from an oxidising-anoxic transition zone to a more reducing marine environment (water depth > 1000 m). The sources of the organic matter are diverse, including algae, bacteria, diatoms, dinoflagellates, and higher plants, but are dominated by aquatic organisms. Our new biomarker record bridges a Paleocene biosphere knowledge gap in the high latitude South Pacific. • First biomarker profile from Paleocene southern Pacific Ocean is established. • Depositional model indicates an oxidising-anoxic marine slope environment with aquatic organisms-dominated organic matter source. • These organically-lean sediments have an equivalent vitrinite reflectance of 0.4%. Takatāpui/LGBTIQ+ people's housing experiences are poorly understood in Aotearoa, New Zealand, including those of young people. We use data from an online survey to investigate experiences of homelessness, involuntary mobility, and housing-related discrimination amongst Takatāpui/LGBTIQ+ youth (n = 334). Multiple linear regression analysis shows a significant relationship between homelessness scores and experience of state care, involuntary mobility, and housing discrimination. Furthermore, these young people had high rates of poverty (57% reporting an annual income below NZD 20,000), involuntary mobility (56%), housing-related discrimination (55%), and lifetime experiences of homelessness (31%). These findings highlight the difficulties that Takatāpui/LGBTIQ+ young people face in the housing market, emphasising the need for targeted programs and policies to meet their needs and prevent homelessness from occurring. In 2020, the Australian and New Zealand flux research and monitoring network, OzFlux, celebrated its 20th anniversary by reflecting on the lessons learned through two decades of ecosystem studies on global change biology. OzFlux is a network not only for ecosystem researchers, but also for those 'next users' of the knowledge, information and data that such networks provide. Here, we focus on eight lessons across topics of climate change and variability, disturbance and resilience, drought and heat stress and synergies with remote sensing and modelling. In distilling the key lessons learned, we also identify where further research is needed to fill knowledge gaps and improve the utility and relevance of the outputs from OzFlux. Extreme climate variability across Australia and New Zealand (droughts and flooding rains) provides a natural laboratory for a global understanding of ecosystems in this time of accelerating climate change. As evidence of worsening global fire risk emerges, the natural ability of these ecosystems to recover from disturbances, such as fire and cyclones, provides lessons on adaptation and resilience to disturbance. Drought and heatwaves are common occurrences across large parts of the region and can tip an ecosystem's carbon budget from a net CO2 sink to a net CO2 source. Despite such responses to stress, ecosystems at OzFlux sites show their resilience to climate variability by rapidly pivoting back to a strong carbon sink upon the return of favourable conditions. Located in under‐represented areas, OzFlux data have the potential for reducing uncertainties in global remote sensing products, and these data provide several opportunities to develop new theories and improve our ecosystem models. The accumulated impacts of these lessons over the last 20 years highlights the value of long‐term flux observations for natural and managed systems. A future vision for OzFlux includes ongoing and newly developed synergies with ecophysiologists, ecologists, geologists, remote sensors and modellers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To study the effects of different structures (solid/hollow) and pore diameters (300/600 μm) on bone ingrowth. Methods: Porous titanium alloy scaffolds (3.2 * 10.5 mm) were printed using electron beam melting. The implants were divided into either Hollow or Solid Group. The upper half of each implant was printed with a pore diameter of 600 μm while the bottom half was printed with a pore diameter of 300 μm. Visualization of the structural morphology was done using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Cell proliferation was evaluated with the cell counting kit-8 assay and live/dead staining assay. The different lateral femoral condyles of 15 New Zealand rabbits were implanted with different groups of scaffolds. The rabbits were randomly sacrificed at the 4th, 8th, and 12th week postoperatively. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone volume fraction (BV/TV) evaluation was completed by quantitative Micro-Computed Tomography (Micro-CT). Tissue histology were stained with toluidine blue to observe bone ingrowth under an optical microscope, and the percentage of new bone area were calculated using Image Pro-Plus 6.0. Results: SEM images showed a significant decrease in residual powder in the hollow implant and cell studies showed no obvious cytotoxicity for the Ti6Al4V scaffolds. Micro-CT reconstruction revealed high levels of new bone formation around the scaffolds. The trabeculae around the implants showed a gradual increase with each week, and new bone filled the scaffold pores gradually. BMD, BV/TV, and tissue histology revealed the 300 μm pore diameter is more conducive to bone ingrowth than the 600 μm (p <.05). Conclusion: Our study revealed that Ti6Al4V implants with hollow structure could reduce the residual metal powder and implants with 300 μm pore diameter were more effective on bone formation than a 600 μm. INTRODUCTION: Connections between environmental factors and mental health issues have been postulated in many different countries around the world. Previously undertaken research has shown many possible connections between these fields, especially in relation to air quality and extreme weather events. However, research on this subject is lacking in New Zealand, which is difficult to analyse as an overall nation due to its many micro-climates and regional differences. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study and subsequent analysis is to explore the associations between environmental factors and poor mental health outcomes in New Zealand by region and predict the number of people with mental health-related illnesses corresponding to the environmental influence. METHODS: Data are collected from various public-available sources, e.g., Stats NZ and Coronial services of New Zealand, which comprised four environmental factors of our interest and two mental health indicators data ranging from 2016 up until 2020. The four environmental factors are air pollution, earthquakes, rainfall and temperature. Two mental health indicators include the number of people seen by District Health Boards (DHBs) for mental health reasons and the statistics on suicide deaths. The initial analysis is carried out on which regions were most affected by the chosen environmental factors. Further analysis using Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average(ARIMA) creates a model based on time series of environmental data to generate estimation for the next two years and mental health projected from the ridge regression. RESULTS: In our initial analysis, the environmental data was graphed along with mental health outcomes in regional charts to identify possible associations. Different regions of New Zealand demonstrate quite different relationships between the environmental data and mental health outcomes. The result of later analysis predicts that the suicide rate and DHB mental health visits may increase in Wellington, drop-in Hawke's Bay and slightly increase in Canterbury for the year 2021 and 2022 with different environmental factors considered. CONCLUSION: It is evident that the relationship between environmental and mental health factors is regional and not national due to the many micro-climates that exist around the nation. However, it was observed that not all factors displayed a good relationship between the regions. We conclude that our hypotheses were partially correct, in that increased air pollution was found to correlate to increased mental health-related DHB visits. Rainfall was also highly correlated to some mental health outcomes. Higher levels of rainfall reduced DHB visits and suicide rates in some areas of the country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents experimental and numerical investigations into the web crippling behaviour and load-carrying capacity of stainless steel built-up I-section members under End-Two-Flange (ETF) concentrated transverse loading. An experimental programme was conducted on 23 austenitic and duplex stainless steel built-up I-section specimens, with each consisting of two identical press-braked channel sections assembled back-to-back by means of self-tapping screws. Following the experimental programme, a numerical modelling programme was performed, where finite element models were firstly developed to replicate the tests and then used to conduct parametric studies. Based on the test and numerical data, the existing design rules for stainless steel built-up I-section members failing by web crippling, as set out in the current European, American and Australian/New Zealand design standards, were assessed. The comparisons indicated that the European and Australian/New Zealand design standards resulted in overly conservative and rather scattered failure load predictions, while the American design standard led to less scattered failure load predictions, but with many predictions on the unsafe side. Therefore, an improved design approach was proposed and shown to provide substantially improved failure load predictions for stainless steel built-up I-section members under End-Two-Flange loading. • The web crippling behaviour of stainless steel built-up I-sections under ETF loading was studied. • Tests were conducted on 23 stainless steel built-up I-section specimens. • FE models were developed and validated against test results and then used for parametric studies. • The existing codified design rules were assessed and a new design approach was proposed. Precision farming is about managing within-field spatial variability by applying appropriate inputs with the right amount, at the right place, and at the right time. This typically leads to the delineation of site-specific management zones that represent different yield potentials. However, a focus on spatiotemporal interactions is generally lacking. This technical note explores the viability of predicting spatial yields within fields, in the small-field arable production commonly practiced in New Zealand, using supervised machine learning algorithms. The methods used are multiple linear regression (MLR), feed-forward backpropagation neural network (FFNN), classification and regression tree (CART), random forest (RF), XGBoost, and Cubist, using predictors compiled from a range of spatiotemporal factors, including soil electrical conductivity (EC), soil organic matter (OM), elevation, rainfall, growing degree days, and solar radiation. Despite poor results (R2 = 0.06 to 0.50) for predicting the spatial yield of each year, the RF, XGBoost, and Cubist models demonstrated greater capability for modeling spatiotemporal interactions than the previously tested FFNN and MLR. The inclusion of consistently calibrated yield data for additional years and more related variables (e.g., soil moisture and canopy cover) could improve the models. The results of these modeling analyses could lead to the delineation of dynamic yield management zones for improving the precision of mid-season fertilizer prescriptions to improve yield.
