Background and Objectives: During the First World War, 10% of New Zealand's population served in the armed forces, and around one in five of those were killed. In commemoration of 100 years since WW1, this study uses retrospective data to report on the oral health of NZ service personnel. Methods: 325 Pakeha, 165 Maori and 150 Samoan male recruits who served in the NZ Expeditionary Force between 1914 and 1918 were randomly selected and their personnel files accessed through Archives New Zealand. Results: The oral health of recruits was described as 'good' for 44%, 'pass' for 38%, 'pass with false teeth' for 5% and 'poor' for 13%. Dental health was documented at enlistment for a decreasing proportion of soldiers as the war progressed, dropping from 96% during 1914-15, to 54% in 1916 and 22% in 1917-18 (p<0.001). Significantly more soldiers who enlisted in 1917-18 had poor dental health (44%) than those who enlisted during 1916 (20%) and 1914-15 (8%) (p<0.001). By ethnicity, Maori had the best dental health, followed by Samoan and Pakeha recruits (p<0.001). On average, dental health was poorer among the lower ranks and among recruits of low socio-economic status; and soldiers from major cities had better oral health than those from rural areas; however, these differences were not statistically significant in this sample. Conclusions: Enlistment criteria appear to have been loosened as the war progressed, perhaps to accept more soldiers into service. Background and Objective Modeling of periodontal bone regeneration in a large animal enables better examination of the spatial and temporal regulation of osteogenesis and the remodeling of the healing defect. RANK, RANKL and osteoprotegerin ( OPG) are known to be important regulators of bone healing. The aim of this study was to create periodontal defects surgically in a large animal model and to examine bone regeneration and the expression of RANK, RANKL and OPG proteins in the defect site during bone regeneration. Material and Methods Periodontal defects were made in the furcation of the second mandibular premolar of sheep. Wound healing was examined 6 h, and 1, 4 and 6 wk after surgery and in control tissue. The teeth and defect region were decalcified and paraffin embedded. Immunohistochemistry for RANK, RANKL and OPG was conducted. Osteoclasts were identified using TRAP staining. Results The defects were examined at different time points after surgery and by 6 wk the defect region had fully regenerated with new bone, albeit less dense than that in the unwounded controls. RANK-positive osteoclasts were present at the edge of the wound from week 1 and were found within the defect at week 6, corresponding to osteoclast activation and bone remodeling. RANKL staining increased from week 1 compared with unwounded tissue, and peaked at 4 and 6 wk, as the osteoblast numbers increased. At the same time, OPG immunostaining was high in controls and at week 6, suggesting that it may act to block RANKL and control the bone remodeling within the defect. Conclusion Distinctive temporal and spatial expression patterns for RANK, RANKL and OPG proteins were observed during healing of surgically created periodontal wounds in a sheep model. Digital x-ray systems offer advantages over conventional film systems, yet many dentists have not adopted digital technology. Objectives: To assess New Zealand dental practitioners' use of--and preferences for--dental radiography systems. Design: Cross-sectional survey. Setting: General and specialist dental practice. Participants and methods: Postal questionnaire survey of a sample of 770 dentists (520 randomly selected general dental practitioners and all 250 specialists) listed in the 2012 NZ Dental Council Register. Main outcome measures: Type of radiography systems used by dentists. Dentists' experiences and opinions of conventional film and digital radiography. Results: The participation rate was 55.2%. Digital radiography systems were used by 58.0% of participating dentists, most commonly among those aged 31-40 years. Users of digital radiography tended to report greater satisfaction with their radiography systems than users conventional films. Two-thirds of film users were interested in switching to digital radiography in the near future. Reasons given by conventional film users for not using digital radiography included cost, difficulty in integrating with other software systems, concern about potential technical errors, and the size and nature of the intra-oral sensors. Conclusion: Many dental practitioners have still not adopted digital radiography, yet its users are more satisfied with their radiography systems than are conventional film users. The Tuatara, Sphenodon, is a small reptile currently restricted to islands off the coast of New Zealand where it feeds mainly on arthropods. A widely held misconception is that 'Sphenodon does not have real teeth' and instead possesses 'serrations on the jaw bone'. One hatchling and one adult dentary were examined under SEM. Two longitudinal ground sections 100-µm thick were prepared through a lower canine tooth and its supporting tissues. There was clear evidence of aprismatic enamel (primless enamel) containing dentine tubules crossing the EDJ, dentine, cementum and a basal-bone attachment. Enamel increments averaged ∼3 µm/day and extension rates were ∼30 µm/day. The base of the tooth consisted of basal attachment bone that graded from few cell inclusions to lamella or even Haversian-like bone with evidence of remodeling. A string of sclerosed pulp-stone like structures filled the pulp chamber and were continuous with the bone of attachment. Bone beneath the large central nutrient mandibular (Meckel's) canal was quite unlike lamella bone and appeared to be fast growing and to contain wide alternating cell-rich and cell-free zones. Bone cells were rounded (never fusiform) and had few, if any, canaliculi. The dentine close to the EDJ formed at about the same rate as enamel but also contained longer period increments ∼100 µm apart. These were spaced appropriately for monthly lunar growth bands, which would explain the basis of the banding pattern observed in the fast growing basal bone beneath the Meckel's canal. To investigate a health promotion strategy to improve oral health among former refugees in New Zealand. Former refugees were recruited (n = 63) and answered a questionnaire about their oral home care, smoking, sugar consumption and use of dental services. Participants then joined either focus group sessions to co-design oral health educational material (n = 39) or to be dentally examined for oral hygiene, periodontal health, gingivitis and dental caries and receive motivational instructions to improve their oral health habits (n = 20). Health messages using dual-language leaflets (covering oral home care, smoking, diet and access to services) were subsequently individually delivered monthly to all participants via a mobile phone application. After 6 months, follow-up questionnaires were sent to all participants and those who had been dentally examined were re-examined. Half of those who did not brush twice daily at baseline (54.1%) had increased brushing to at least twice daily by follow-up; 76.9% of those who consumed sugary drinks at least twice daily, reduced their sugar intake. No smokers quit smoking, however, 52.4% reported reducing the number of cigarettes or engaging in smoking cessation activities. Among those who had been dentally examined, plaque scores, gingivitis and periodontal pocketing all decreased significantly. Culturally and linguistically tailored oral health promotion interventions led to improved oral health behaviours for this group of former refugees over a 6 months follow-up period.
