The Cenomanian–Turonian is considered the warmest interval of the last 150 million years. It was characterized by major disturbances to the global carbon cycle, resulting in elevated pCO 2 levels and global temperatures, and witnessed the rise to dominance of angiosperms floras. In this paper, we assess changes of fossil floras during the Cenomanian–Turonian interval based on palynological studies of two distantly-spaced localities in high southern paleolatitudes: the Mata Amarilla Formation of Patagonia, southern South America and the Tupuangi Formation of the Chatham Islands, New Zealand. Richness estimations for each stratigraphic unit and cluster analysis were conducted to assess the vegetation changes. Palynological dominance and the presence/absence of taxa were compiled for these units and compared with others from the Cenomanian of southern Gondwana. We recognize a peak in richness during the Mid-Cenomanian Event in Patagonia, with a fall in richness after the event due to species being displaced by dominant taxa. Several richness peaks are also recognized in New Zealand, but the lack of stratigraphic control prevents correlation with marine-based events. Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 is not recorded in either study area. The inclusion of Gondwanic palynological records demonstrate that the Tupuangi Formation cluster with sites from the Antarctic Peninsula and south-eastern Australia conforming a 'polar cluster'. However, this area has its own palynological signature, constituting a newly proposed Taxodiaceaepollenites Subprovince. The abundances of key plant groups of the Mata Amarilla Formation cluster with those of Bathurst Island (northern Australia), but also show important differences, likely owing to their geographic separation and latitudinal difference. In summary, our paper presents a new scheme for the mid-Cretaceous palynological provinces of Southern Gondwana and provides novel data sets for Patagonia and New Zealand, which can be used as reference points for palynological and paleoecological studies of coeval floras worldwide. • A peak of richness is described for the mid-Cenomanian Event in Patagonia. • After the mid-Cenomanian Event Patagonian palynofloras show a decrease in richness. • Five richness peaks are described for the Cenomanian–Turonian of New Zealand. • The Taxodiaceaepollenites Subprovince is proposed for New Zealand palynofloras. • Angiosperms are small portion of Gondwana palynofloras during Cenomanian–Turonian. Glacial geologic studies in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) mid-latitudes (40-54°S) indicate renewed glacial activity in southern South America (Patagonia) and New Zealand's (NZ) South Island starting at ∼7 kyr, the so-called neoglaciation. Available data indicate that neoglacial advances in these regions occurred during a rising trend in atmospheric CO and CH concentrations, lower-than-present but increasing summer insolation and seasonality contrasts. In this paper we examine the climatological context in which neoglaciations occurred through analysis of the complete Paleoclimate Modelling Inter-comparison Project (PMIP2) database of simulations at 6 kyr for the SH. We observe that the amplitude of the annual insolation cycle in the SH did not change significantly at 6 kyr compared to the pre-industrial values, the largest difference occurring in autumn (MAM, negative anomalies) and spring (SON, positive anomalies). The simulated changes in temperatures over the SH respond to the insolation changes, with a 1-2 month delay over the oceans. This results in a reduced amplitude of the annual cycle of temperature and precipitation over most continental regions, except over Patagonia and NZ, that show a slight increase. In contrast, large-scale circulation features, such as the low and upper level winds and the subtropical anticyclones show an amplified annual cycle, as a direct response to the increased/decreased insolation during the transitional seasons SON/MAM. In the annual mean, there is a small but consistent equatorward shift of the latitude of maximum wind speed of 1-3° over the entire SH, which results in a small increase of wind speed over the South Pacific and Atlantic Oceans north of ∼50°S and a widespread decline south of 50°S. PMIP2 simulations for 6 kyr, indicate that in the annual mean, the SH mid-latitudes were colder, wetter and with stronger winds north of about 50°S. These conditions are consistent with the observed neoglacial advances in the region, as well as with terrestrial paleoclimate records from Patagonia that indicate cooling and a multi-millennial rising trend in Southern Westerly Wind intensity starting at ∼7.8 kyr. Premise of research. The Miocene Punta Basílica Beds (northeast of Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, Argentina) preserved a flora rich in insect herbivory traces. Here we document its insect damage and compare it with three Miocene floras from northwestern Argentina (low-latitude San José and Palo Pintado) and New Zealand (high-latitude Hindon Maar). In addition, comparisons are established for insect damage observed on Miocene Nothofagus in the Punta Basílica flora and the New Zealand Hindon Maar, Double Hill, and Kaikorai floras. Methodology. Plant-insect interactions were photographed and determined for 209 fossil leaves collected at the Punta Basílica locality. Leaves were censused for the presence/absence of functional feeding types. Pivotal results. Six functional feeding groups and 26 damage types (DTs) were recognized: hole (seven DTs) and margin (five DTs) feeding, skeletonization (six DTs), piercing and sucking (two DTs), mining (three DTs), and galling (three DTs). Nothofagus spp. are the most affected members of the paleoflora. Both of the low-latitude paleofloras compared have lower percentages of damaged leaves than the high-latitude ones; hole and margin feeding, mining, and skeletonization are recognized at all floras. Hole and margin feeding and skeletonization are recognized on Nothofagus leaves and are the most common functional feeding groups; hole feeding on Nothofagus is more prominent at Hindon Maar and Kaikorai than at Double Hill and Punta Basilíca. Additionally, Nothofagus specimens from Hindon Maar and Punta Basílica have evidence of mining, whereas galling is observed only on the New Zealand leaves. The Punta Basílica Nothofagus specimens are the only ones with piercing and sucking. Conclusions. Southernmost Miocene records of leaf herbivory worldwide and the first record from Argentine Patagonia are rich and comprise several functional feeding groups also observed in other Miocene paleofloras from the Southern Hemisphere. Clearly, multiple biotic and abiotic factors explain differences in the intensity of folivory. This report evidences the need for additional studies on herbivory at high-latitude floras. Forest dynamics are driven by top-down changes in climate and bottom-up positive (destabilizing) and negative (stabilizing) biophysical feedbacks involving disturbance and biotic interactions. When positive feedbacks prevail, the resulting self-propagating changes can potentially shift the system into a new state, even in the absence of climate change. Conversely, negative feedbacks help maintain a dynamic equilibrium that allows communities to recover their pre-disturbance characteristics. We examine palaeoenvironmental records from temperate forests to assess the nature of long-term stability and regime shifts under a broader range of environmental forcings than can be observed at present. Forest histories from northwestern USA, Patagonia, Tasmania and New Zealand show long-term trajectories that were governed by (i) the biophysical template, (ii) characteristics of climate and disturbance, (iii) historical legacies that condition the ecological capacity to respond to subsequent disturbances, and (iv) thresholds that act as irreversible barriers. Attention only to current forest conditions overlooks the significance of history in creating path dependency, the importance of individual extreme events, and the inherent feedbacks that force an ecosystem into reorganization. A long-time perspective on ecological resilience helps guide conservation strategies that focus on environmental preservation as well as identify vulnerable species and ecosystems to future climate change. The Hauraki Goldfield of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone, North Island, New Zealand, hosts up to 19 known siliceous hot spring deposits, or sinters, some directly associated with Au–Ag ore bodies, in a Miocene–Pliocene, sub-aerial, calc-alkaline volcanic arc overlying Jurassic meta-sedimentary basement. Sinters are surface expressions of predominately adularia-sericite epithermal systems, potentially linked to Au–Ag mineralised conduits at depth. They provide a paleosurface marker to determine the level of erosion, and help determine zones of thermal fluid upflow and/or lateral outflow. Mapped sinters of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone are mainly affiliated with rhyolite domes, occur along structural corridors of the volcanic arc, and contain characteristic textures, mineralogy and pathfinder elements typical of near-neutral pH alkali chloride fluid discharge derived from convectively circulating magmatic fluids diluted by meteoric waters. Textures and trace element compositions of the Coromandel sinters are similar to those of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand, and the Jurassic Au–Ag mining districts of the Deseado Massif, Argentine Patagonia. Thus, detailed mapping, textural analysis and trace-element studies demonstrate the prospecting potential of siliceous hot spring deposits for locating ore deposits, and in particular to help define proximal to distal positions relative to vent zones at the paleo-surface. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages are described for the first time from the early Eocene of West Antarctica. They come from the lower member (Telm1) of the La Meseta Formation of Isla Marambio (Seymour Island). Two distinctive assemblages, dominated by Nonionellina, Nonionella, Globocassidulina, and Eilohedra, as well as by Globocassidulina, Cribroelphidium, Guttulina, and Lobatula, indicate restricted, shallow marine, nearshore conditions. Their most characteristic species show distinct affinities with Eocene faunas of New Zealand and Patagonia, as well as with stratigraphically younger Antarctic foraminiferal communities.
