Profiles gay Latin-American playwright, Edwin Sánchez, whose latest play, 'Diosa,' is in its world premiere run through May 11 at Connecticut's Hartford Stage and was inspired by the life of Rita Hayworth. Diosa is the tale of a young Hispanic woman named Josefa who finds success as a Hollywood diva. Born in Puerto Rico, raised there and in New York City, Sánchez settled in New York in the 1980s to pursue acting but was offered only stereotypical ethnic roles, like drug dealers and pimps. Soon after finding a boyfriend, partner of 21 years Alden Thayer, he found his niche in writing. Though there's nothing overtly gay about Diosa, Sánchez says gay audiences will be drawn into the play by its theme of self-acceptance.
