TEACHERS ,SPOKEN English - Abstract
The article discusses how Brooklyn schoolteacher Harry R. Levine defended Brooklynese in a 1951 issue of "High Points," which is the magazine of the New York City Board of Education. Levine says that Brooklynese may not be the best English worldwide, but a lot of it is not unique to Brooklyn. According to Levine, even the educated speakers in England are guilty of the same barbarisms because swallering is quite common among Britons. Examples of how most people in Brooklyn talk are also presented.
