Summary: In 2022, an Athenian red‐figured cup attributed to Makron was returned to Italy by New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The cup had been acquired in fragments, through purchase and gift, from multiple sources over several years, starting with two fragments from the restorer Fritz Bürki in 1978. A second cup, also attributed to Makron, was acquired in a parallel way. The sources for the fragments from both cups point to galleries collectors and donors – Summa Galleries, Frieda Tchachos, Elizabeth Hecht, and Dietrich von Bothmer – who have been associated with other material that has been repatriated to Italy in recent years. It is suggested that some of the incised 'signatures' by Hieron that are found on cups attributed to Makron may have been applied since antiquity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In response to fast-turnaround funding opportunities, collaborations have been forming across the country to address severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) disparities. Here we describe the process, notes from the field, and evaluation results from a new collaboration involving multiple partners, formed in October 2020 in New York City as part of the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics initiative. We used the validated Research Engagement Survey Tool to evaluate the partnership. Results can inform future research and improve engagement efforts aimed at reducing SARS-CoV-2 disparities. Multiple studies have considered whether increased anthropogenic CO2 will affect the wind speeds and turbulence associated with the winter North Atlantic polar‐front jet stream in the upper atmosphere. Key questions are whether any effects can already be seen and, if so, can they be seen independent of computer models of the atmosphere. In this study we use two reanalyses, NCEP/NCAR and the ECMWF ERA5, and two large observational archives, AMDAR/ACARS and the Global Aircraft Data Set (GADS), to try to answer these questions for the period 2002–2020 when automated aircraft observations were plentiful over the North Atlantic. We focus on eastbound, New York to London, flights. No significant increase appears in reanalyses during the last roughly 40 years (1979–2020) which is our best estimate for the modern satellite era. In contrast, for the last roughly 20 years (2002–2020) both the ERA5 reanalysis (2.5% per year) and the GADS archive (1.2% to 1.4% per year) show a statistically significant rise in the wind speed in the North Atlantic jet streak exit region. These results must be considered in the context of atmospheric oscillations, changes to the North Atlantic Track System (NATS), and the effects of aircraft step climbs. We estimate that up to 0.5% of the rise may be due to improvements in the NATS operations and an unknown additional amount may be due to the substantial increase in automated aircraft observations starting in 1997. We also examine the impact of aircraft observations on one's confidence in drawing conclusions from secular changes in the reanalyses. For turbulence, the Light turbulence trends are not statistically significant. Our confidence in the turbulence results is more limited since these observations reflect medium‐term changes in tactical and strategic aircraft operational procedures as well as the underlying prevalence of turbulence. The COVID-19 pandemic has illustrated the importance of infection tracking. The role of asymptomatic, undiagnosed individuals in driving infections within this pandemic has become increasingly evident. Modern phylogenetic tools that take into account asymptomatic or undiagnosed individuals can help guide public health responses. We finetuned established phylogenetic pipelines using published SARS-CoV-2 genomic data to examine reasonable estimate transmission networks with the inference of unsampled infection sources. The system utilised Bayesian phylogenetics and TransPhylo to capture the evolutionary and infection dynamics of SARS-CoV-2. Our analyses gave insight into the transmissions within a population including unsampled sources of infection and the results aligned with epidemiological observations. We were able to observe the effects of preventive measures in Canada's "Atlantic bubble" and in populations such as New York State. The tools also inferred the cross-species disease transmission of SARS-CoV-2 transmission from humans to lions and tigers in New York City's Bronx Zoo. This paper presents a qualitative content analysis of survey data collected from behavioral health care providers from throughout New York regarding the challenges faced as a result of COVID-19. Survey responses from 295 agency and program administrators and staff, representing 238 organizations, were analyzed. Ten themes were identified: business operations, service provision, telehealth, safety, client concerns, staff concerns, supplies, technology, illness/grief/loss, and communication. These themes represent concerns that arose from the rapid transition to widespread use of telehealth, limited technology accessibility for both staff and clients, reduced revenue and billing changes, impact of COVID-19 infection itself and subsequent deaths of clients and staff, and necessary modifications for organizational communication both internally and externally. Background: Pregnancy causes multiple hemodynamic changes that place significant stress on the cardiovascular system. With advancements in medical care, individuals with complex congenital heart disease are living into their childbearing years. Much remains to be understood about the effects and management of pregnancy in individuals with complex congenital heart disease. Case Report: We describe the management and delivery of a 29-year-old pregnant female with repaired tetralogy of Fallot or ventricular septal defect with pulmonary atresia. The patient presented at 21 weeks' gestation with New York Heart Association class II symptoms and pulmonary conduit stenosis, with a mean gradient of 52 mmHg. At 36.5 weeks' gestation, she developed severe pulmonary conduit stenosis with a mean gradient of >75 mmHg. The patient was admitted at 37 weeks' gestation for planned delivery. After a successful cesarean section and bilateral tubal ligation, the patient had an uncomplicated postoperative course. She was scheduled for follow-up for severe conduit stenosis at 6 weeks postpartum to discuss management options. Conclusion: Management of a pregnant patient with adult congenital heart disease should involve risk stratification for complications (commonly congestive heart failure exacerbation and arrhythmias) using tools such as the modifiedWorld Health Organization pregnancy risk classification. Based on the risk category, decisions must bemade about frequency of follow-up, anesthesia, and mode of delivery. Patients in moderate to high-risk stratification should bemanaged by a multidisciplinary team at a specialty center, and all patients should undergo an anesthesia consultation prior to delivery. The decision for vaginal or cesarean delivery should bemade on a case-by-case basis with consideration given to patient preference. Patients with asymptomatic moderate to severe pulmonic stenosis can be managed conservatively with appropriate follow-up and cardiac imaging, allowing intervention to be completed after delivery. Immigrant taxi drivers in metropolitan cities are exposed to experiences of discrimination and occupation-based health risks. Given the structural differences in health care systems in the United States and Canada, we investigated the differences in reports of discrimination, health conditions and concern about health conditions between taxi drivers in New York City and Toronto, Ontario. Participants were recruited for a taxi driver Needs Assessment Survey as part of a Taxi Network needs assessment project using a street side convenience sampling technique in New York City and Toronto. The matched sample contained 33 drivers from Toronto and 33 drivers from NYC. All Toronto drivers in our sample reported having health insurance while over a quarter of NYC drivers did not have health insurance. Toronto drivers reported greater everyday and workplace discrimination. Drivers in both cities experienced higher rates than average, and reported concern about, major health conditions. We also found preliminary evidence suggesting a relationship between experiencing discrimination and reporting chronic pain. Our findings suggest the need for future research to more closely examine the associations between discrimination and health among the taxi driver population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. The HIV care continuum outlines the steps from HIV infection to diagnosis, linkage to care, and viral suppression among people living with HIV. We examined data for steps along the HIV care continuum among people living with perinatally acquired infection in New York City using surveillance data. Methods. This study included data for people who acquired HIV infection perinatally and lived in New York City as of December 31, 2014. We defined "in care" as having ≥1 CD4 or viral load test in 2014, "in continuous care" as having ≥2 CD4 or viral load tests ≥3 months apart in 2014, and "virally suppressed" as having a viral load of ≥200 copies per milliliter in the most recent test in 2014. We estimated factors associated with viral suppression from a weighted log-binomial regression model that included sex, race/ethnicity, age, and country of birth as independent variables. Results. As of December 31, 2014, an estimated 1,596 people were living with perinatally acquired HIV infection in New York City. All were diagnosed, 96% were in care, 80% were in continuous care, and 61% were virally suppressed. The multivariable analysis showed significant differences in viral suppression by race/ethnicity and age. Black patients (59%, 534/907) were the least likely of all racial/ethnic groups examined to have a suppressed viral load. By age, compared with 73% (80/109) of children aged 0-12 years who were virally suppressed, 58% (568/987) of adults aged 20-29 years and 56% (54/96) of adults aged 30-39 years were virally suppressed; the adjusted prevalence ratio was 0.80 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.69, 0.92) for those aged 20-29 years and 0.79 (95% CI 0.63, 0.99) for those aged 30-39 years. Conclusion. The low level of viral suppression among people living with perinatally acquired infection found in this study warrants further exploration to identify the best management strategies to improve viral suppression in this population, especially those transitioning from pediatric to adult health care. Objectives. We describe the impact of the Step On It! intervention to link taxi drivers, particularly South Asians, to health insurance enrollment and navigate them into care when necessary. Methods. Step On It! was a worksite initiative held for 5 consecutive days from September 28 to October 2, 2011, at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. Data collected included sociodemographics, employment, health care access and use, height, weight, blood pressure, and random plasma glucose. Participants were given their results, counseled by a medical professional, and invited to participate in free workshops provided by partner organizations. Results. Of the 466 drivers participated, 52% were uninsured, and 49% did not have a primary care provider. Of 384 drivers who had blood pressure, glucose, or both measured, 242 (63%) required urgent or regular follow-up. Of the 77 (32%) requiring urgent follow-up, 50 (65%) sought medical care at least once, of whom 13 (26%) received a new diagnosis. Of the 165 (68%) requiring regular follow-up, 68 (41%) sought medical care at least once, of whom 5 (7%) received a new diagnosis. Conclusions. This study provides encouraging results about the potential impact of an easy-to-deliver, easily scalable workplace intervention with a large, vulnerable population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The current death certification system in the USA fails to accurately track deaths due to adverse medical events. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the under-reporting of deaths due to adverse medical events due to limitations in the current death certification/reporting system, and the benefits of using the term 'therapeutic complication' as the manner of death. Study design: Retrospective review and comparison of death certificates and vital statistical coding. Methods: The manner of death is certified as a therapeutic complication when death is caused by predictable complications of appropriate therapy, and would not have occurred but for the medical intervention. Based on medical examiner records, complications that caused or contributed to deaths over a five-year period were examined retrospectively. These fatalities were compared with deaths coded as medical and surgical complications by the New York City Bureau of Vital Statistics. Results: The Medical Examiner's Office certified 2471 deaths as therapeutic complications and 312 deaths as accidents occurring in healthcare facilities. In contrast, the New York City Bureau of Vital Statistics reported 188 deaths due to complications of medical and surgical care. Conclusions: Use of the term 'therapeutic complication' as the manner of death identified nearly 14 times more deaths than were reported by the New York City Bureau of Vital Statistics. If these therapeutic complications and medical accidents were considered as a 'disease', they would rank as the 10th leading cause of death in New York City, surpassing homicides and suicides in some years. Nationwide policy shifts that use the term 'therapeutic complication' would improve the capture and reporting of these deaths, thus allowing better identification of fatal adverse medical events in order to focus on and assess preventative strategies. South Asian (SA) taxi drivers potentially possess a double epidemiologic risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) due to their ethnicity and occupation. This study investigates SA taxi drivers' knowledge, attitudes, beliefs about general health, CVD and approaches to reduce CVD risk. Five focus groups were conducted with 31 SA taxi drivers in the participants' primary language (Bengali, Hindi, Urdu or Punjabi). Audio-recordings of the sessions were transcribed, translated and entered into ATLAS.ti 6.2 for coding and analysis. SA drivers in an urban setting perceive themselves to be at high risk for CVD because of high work-related stress, physical inactivity, poor diet and poor health care access. Participants attributed their occupation to increasing risk for heart disease; none believed that being SA increased their risk. Interventions to lower CVD risk among SA taxi drivers should be multi-level and involve the individual drivers and the taxi industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses a study conducted to evaluate influence of weight classification on children's ability to meet task constraints, of crossing obstacles of various heights. It highlights the statistical methods used, including, repeated measures (RM) analyses of variance (ANNOVA), and independent "t" tests. Also discussed are findings of the study, revealing that there is difference in the movement time of obese children while stepping over obstacle but not during the base-line trials.

Certain spectrum characteristics have been identified as important for register equalization around the male passaggio, an effect ascribed to formant tuning although descriptions of formant tuning diverge. Eight professional singers sang scales including their passaggio range on different vowels, applying two formant tuning strategies as found in (1) classical and (2) non-classical singing. Formant frequencies were measured using inverse filtering. Results revealed differences between the two strategies. For the classical formant tuning, systematic changes of formant frequencies with pitch were observed. For the highest note sung on /a/, F1 was below the second partial and F2 in the vicinity of the third. Similar spectrum characteristics were achieved by different F1 and F2 values between singers. This paper explores questions of sexual difference and religious belief in relation to recent debates in urban studies and geography on urban encounters. Although it has been widely suggested that increased contact between members of different groups is an important driver for tolerant and respectful intergroup relations, there is need for more careful consideration of the kinds of sites that actually facilitate 'meaningful encounters'. Specifically, we draw on empirical research in Episcopalian churches in New York City and examine how straight-identified parishioners and clergy narrate and perceive their encounters with the city's LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) population. Moving beyond the traditional focus on public space in the literature on cosmopolitan urbanism, we examine how churches serve as 'micropublics' which organize, facilitate, and/or limit encounters with sexual difference. To capture the tension between orthodox theological understandings of human sexuality and lived experiences in a metropolitan context where homosexuality is expressed relatively openly, the discussion focuses in particular on an evangelical case-study parish, where the church leadership is opposed to full LGBT inclusion in the church [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The need for mental health resources to provide care to the community following large-scale disasters is well documented. In the aftermath of the World Trade Center (WTC) disaster on September 11, 2001, many local agencies and organizations responded by providing informal mental health services, including disaster mental health training for practitioners. The quality of these programmes has not been assessed, however. The National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University's School of Public Health reviewed disaster mental health training programmes administered by community-based organizations, professional associations, hospitals, and government agencies after September 11. Results indicate that the quality and the effectiveness of programmes are difficult to assess. A wide range of curricula and a widespread lack of recordkeeping and credentialing of trainers were noted. Most of the training programmes provided are no longer available. We examined the characteristics of subway train-related fatalities in New York City between Jan. 1, 2003 and May 31, 2007 in order to determine which factors are useful in differentiating accident from suicide. Subway train-related deaths with homicide and undetermined manners also are included. During this period, there were 211 subway train-related fatalities. The manners of death were: suicide ( n = 111), accident ( n = 76), undetermined ( n = 20), and homicide ( n = 4). The causes of death were blunt trauma ( n = 206) and electrocution ( n = 5). Torso transection and extremity amputation were more frequent in suicides. Antidepressant medications were more frequently detected in suicides, whereas cocaine and ethanol were more frequent in accidents. However, autopsy findings should be weighed in the context of the entire evaluation along with other circumstantial and investigative findings. Context.-Shaken baby syndrome is a controversial topic in forensic pathology. Some forensic pathologists state that shaking alone is insufficient to explain death and that an impact must have occurred even if there is no impact site on the head. Objective.-To examine a large cohort of fatal, pediatric head injuries for patterns of specific autopsy findings and circumstances that would support or dispute pure shaking as the cause of death. Design.-We retrospectively reviewed 59 deaths due to head injuries in children younger than 2 years certified in our office during a 9 year period (1998-2006). The review included autopsy, toxicology, microscopy, neuropathology, and police and investigators' reports. Results.-There were 46 homicides, 8 accidents, and 1 undetermined death from blunt-impact injury of the head. In 10 (22%) of the homicides, there was no impact injury to the head, and the cause of death was certified as whiplash shaking. In 4 (40%) of these 10 deaths, there was a history of shaking. In 5 (83%) of the other 6, there was no history of any purported accidental or homicidal injury. All 8 accidental deaths had impact sites. Of the 59 deaths, 4 (6.7%) had only remote injuries (chronic subdural hematomas, remote long bone fractures) that were certified as undetermined cause and manner. These 4 deaths were excluded from the study. Conclusions.-We describe a subset of fatal, nonaccidental head-injury deaths in infants without an impact to the head. The autopsy findings and circumstances are diagnostic of a nonimpact, shaking mechanism as the cause of death. Fatal, accidental head injuries in children younger than 2 years are rare. The use of deadly force during law enforcement is a matter that compels public scrutiny. There were 42 gunshot deaths caused by police over a 4-year period in New York City. The decedents’ average age was 31 years and ranged from 17 to 64 years. There were 41 males and one female; and 26 Black, nine Hispanic, and seven White decedents. Ethanol and/or drugs of abuse were detected in 78% (31/40) of the decedents. The vast majority of shootings occurred with the police responding to a crime and 90% of the decedents were armed (26 handguns, six knives, one axe, one metal pipe, and one toy gun). Vehicles were used as weapons in two incidents. A total of 177 bullets struck the 42 decedents. Fourteen decedents sustained single gunshot wounds (GSWs), and the remainder had multiple GSWs ranging from 2 to 21. In the majority of the cases in this study, the number of GSWs of the body was three or fewer. Thirteen decedents had at least one GSW of the back or buttocks, accounting for 25 of the total 177 wounds, and four of the 13 had GSWs of only the back. With the exception of the upper extremities, GSWs of all locations were more likely to penetrate than perforate. Although these deaths may be high profile, the certification is typically straightforward and the cause (i.e., GSW) and manner of death (homicide) are readily apparent. Although police shootings in which the decedent was unarmed and/or sustained numerous GSWs are widely reported by the lay press, these types of shootings were not typical in our study. Objectives. We examined trends in perinatal HIV prevention interventions in New York City implemented during 1994 to 2003 to ascertain the success of the interventions in reducing perinatal transmission. Methods. We used data obtained from infant records at 22 hospitals. We used multiple logistic regression to analyze factors associated with prenatal care and perinatal HIV transmission. Results. We analyzed data for 4729 perinatally HIV-exposed singleton births. Of mothers with prenatal care data, 92% had prenatal care. The overall proportion who received prenatal care and were diagnosed with HIV before delivery was 86% in 1994 to 1996 and 90% in 1997 to 2003. Use of prenatal antiretrovirals among mothers who received prenatal care was 63% in 1994 to 1996 and 82% in 1997 to 2003. From 1994 to 2003, cesarean births among the entire sample increased from 15% to 55%. During 1997 to 2003, the perinatal HIV transmission rate among the entire sample was 7%; 45% of mothers of infected infants had missed opportunities for perinatal HIV prevention. During 1997 to 2003, maternal illicit drug use was significantly associated with lack of prenatal care. Lack of prenatal, intrapartum, and neonatal antiretrovirals; maternal illicit drug use; and low birthweight were significantly associated with perinatal HIV transmission. Conclusions. Interventions for perinatal HIV prevention can successfully decrease HIV transmission rates. Ongoing perinatal HIV surveillance allows for monitoring the implementation of guidelines to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV and determining factors that may contribute to perinatal HIV transmission. Analyses of deaths due to therapeutic complications (TCs) provide important quality of care information for medical providers. In New York City, 463 deaths were investigated by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner and certified with TC as the manner of death in 2003. The TC manner of death is used for fatalities due to predictable complications of appropriate medical therapy. All death certificates and select autopsy, hospital, and investigation reports were reviewed. Data concerning cause of death, contributing conditions, age, race, and sex were extracted. The types of complications and the causes of death were classified into various types of surgical and nonsurgical categories of complications. These included: postoperative infections, pulmonary emboli, and technical and medication complications. The use of TC as a manner of death has benefits and limitations. Without the TC option, one is forced to certify certain deaths (e.g., penicillin anaphylaxis) either as natural or accident. The TC option allows easy identification and tracking of medical complications for public health purposes and also allows more consistent reporting of natural and medical-accidental deaths. In general, complications that occur during emergency surgeries/procedures for natural disease, tend to be certified with a natural manner. The "but for" test may be used to distinguish natural from TC deaths. There are criteria for distinguishing TC from accidents and homicides. TCs that occur during treatment of a potentially life-threatening injury, are superceded by the manner dictated by the circumstances of the initiating injury. In 1997, the F. W. Olin Foundation of New York established the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, Needham, MA, with the mission of creating an engineering school for the 21st century Over the last five years, the college has transformed from an idea to a functioning entity that admitted its first freshman class in fall 2002. This paper describes the broad outlines of the Olin curriculum with some emphasis on the electrical and computer engineering degree. AbstractThe Office of School Food and Nutrition Services of the New York City Board of Education identified three areas as potential bottlenecks in implementation of its HACCP program: the critical control point analysis, training, and oversight of implementation. Each area was addressed in a nonstandard way. Menu items were grouped on the basis of food-handling processes they had in common. The critical control point analysis was then performed on those process groups rather than on individual menu items, and that approach greatly reduced the work with-out compromising the analytical process. The most obvious implementation challenge, training of 10,000 staff members, was addressed through delegation. It was determined that all supervisory staff down to the person in charge of each site needed a fairly broad understanding. In turn, those staff would provide more specific training to their subordinates. Finally, because of the size and speed of the implementation effort, effective implementation oversight was critical. A HACCP Monitoring Team was formed, not only to pro-vide oversight, but also to serve as an extension of the training program. This team will provide immediate refresher training when deficiencies are identified and will give positive reinforcement for compliance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the influence of correctional philosophy upon correctional architecture and describes the decisive influence of correctional architecture upon correctional policies. The penitentiary program was saved in 1820 by a stalwart prison warden and two architects. The warden was Elam Lynds, who established the famous Auburn System of prison discipline at the state prison in Auburn, New York, and who was aided and abetted by his architect-builder John Cray. In the Auburn System, prisoners were housed in inside cells and worked together in congregate work-shops under the silent rule. The Progressive Prison represents a natural swing of the pendulum away from the harsh cruelty of the old penology, and it somehow fills the vacuum caused by the decline in prison industries due to the opposition of free labor and capital to the sale of prison products on the open market. Security deals with three basic elements-- escape, contraband, and disorder. Hence maximum, medium, and minimum risks deal not only with escape, but also with contraband and disorder. The so-called bad psychological effect of walls on prisoners is a myth of Progressive Penology. With regard to prisoner personnel, once having determined security, it is good philosophy not to deal with prisoners according to the crimes which they have committed or the activities which the institution offers, however various these may be. The small group principle is reflected in housing, dining, recreation, and all important activities. Evidence of the emphasis on both acculturation and problem-solving is shown in the architecture.
