The article reports that based on an analysis of the Container Recycling Institute about 8 billion beer and soda containers were recycled in 2005 through New York's bottle bill and recycling programs. However, only about 68 million water bottles and other nondeposit containers were recycled. The supporters of the state bottle bill are calling on the Legislature to update the law to include bottled water, iced tea and other noncarbonated beverages. Laura Haight of the New York Public Interest Research Group, said that billions more bottles and cans have ended up littered.
