Abstract

This article focuses on a sixteenth-century armor ascribed to Anne de Montmorency, constable of France, and is currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The armor was among the pieces offered at a major sale of works of art from Wilton House in Wiltshire, England held by Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge of London on July 5-10, 1917. The article also investigates the association between the armor and King Henry VIII of England. A detailed description and analysis of the armor is included.

Abstract

The article reviews the collection of 14th-century Japanese armor of the Department of Arms and Armor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The article focuses specifically on the rare "yoroi" type armor, an early form of lamellar armor which is believed to have belonged to the founder of the Ashikaga shogunate, Takauji Ashikaga. The article discusses the typical features of Japanese body armor which are were usually formed of lacquered leather and iron lames. The museum acquired the armor from the private collection of Bashford Dean, professor of vertebrate zoology at Columbia University.

Doyle New York's "Asian Works of Art" on September 14 featured a Chinese Jiaquing mark-and-period moulded white glazed porcelain vase as their top lot of the sale. A gui from the Chinese Western Zhou period was sold at Christie's "Property from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections" sale. It also mentions "The Samurai Sale" at Bonhams wherein armours and their fittings sell consistently unlike the swords.
