In this article the author examines the development, design and construction of government-funded public baths in New York City during the period 1891-1915. A number of issues are addressed including the importance of social class and status in the development of such buildings, the need for social reforms to cure the ills brought about by rapid industrialization and urbanization of the immigrant classes and the shift in the use of the baths as places for institutional bathing to recreational swimming.
