Purpose: This mixed-methods study aimed to examine the conversation techniques used by parents of young children with hearing loss (HL) during dinnertime at home. Parents' usage rates of open- and closed-ended language elicitation, reformulation, imitation, directives, and explicit vocabulary instruction were examined in relation to children's receptive vocabulary and basic-concepts skills. Method: Twenty-minute dinnertime segments were extracted from naturalistic, daylong recordings of 37 preschoolers with HL who used listening and spoken language. The segments were hand-coded for parents' use of conversation techniques. Children's receptive vocabulary and basic concepts were assessed using standardized measures. Results: Parents' use of conversation techniques varied widely, with closed-ended elicitation and directives used most frequently during dinner. Explicit vocabulary instruction was correlated with general receptive vocabulary and basic-concepts skills. Thematic analysis of the conversations revealed common themes, including concrete topics and sibling speakers. In addition, parents who used many techniques often introduced abstract conversation topics; electronic media was present in all conversations with few techniques. Conclusions: Parents of preschoolers with HL may benefit from specific coaching to elicit language and introduce new vocabulary during home routines. These techniques may help develop their children's receptive language.

The researchers investigated the effects of adult language input on the quantity of language, vocabulary development, and understanding of basic concepts of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children who used listening and spoken language. Using audio recording and Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA) software, the study involved 30 preschool DHH children who used spoken language as their communication modality and 11 typically hearing same-age peers. The children's language and the language spoken to them during all waking hours over a 2-day period (16 hours per day) were recorded and analyzed quantitatively and were compared to the children's performance on the Boehm Test of Basic Concepts and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test. The results highlight the relationship between the quantity of adult language and the language, vocabulary, and basic concept knowledge of DHH preschool children who use listening and spoken language.

We explored the notion of what constitutes literacy, particularly as it pertains to individuals who are blind or with visual impairments, including those that do not use Braille as their primary way to access and produce text. Four groups of stakeholders participated in the study: a) college students who were blind or with visual impairments, b) literacy specialists, c) teachers of individuals who were blind or with visual impairments, and d) professionals who were blind or with visual impairments. We interviewed each participant individually. We found a very complex understanding of what constituted literacy but a general consensus as to what literacy meant across those participants. We concluded that Braille was not the only viable approach to accessing text and legitimated audition as another feasible mode of literacy with contemporary technological advances. We also offered recommendations as to how this might be accomplished.

Purpose: Studies document the substantial underutilization of mental health services by US Latinos in young adulthood. Rates of service use are higher in childhood, raising questions about whether mental health service use during childhood may facilitate access to services later in life. This article examines the extent to which utilization of mental health services in childhood is predictive of utilization in young adulthood among US Latinos., Methods: Data come from the Boricua Youth Study, a longitudinal study of Puerto Rican youth at two sites (South Bronx, New York, and the standard metropolitan area of San Juan, Puerto Rico). Data were collected in three waves during childhood (ages 5-13; surveyed 1 year apart), with an approximately 11-year follow-up in young adulthood (ages 16-29). In childhood, parents reported on youth mental health service use (Waves 1-3). In Wave 4, as youth transitioned to young adults (N = 2004), they reported on their past year mental health service use., Results: Whereas 30.2% of parents reported their child received mental health services, only 3.5% of young adults reported mental health service use in the past year. After controlling for young adult disorders and their severity, childhood disorders were associated with increased likelihood of mental health service use in young adulthood. Childhood mental health service use was also associated with young adult service use; however, this association attenuated when controlling for childhood disorders., Conclusion: Findings suggest the importance of specifically considering childhood disorders in understanding mechanisms for improving access to mental health services among Latino young adults.

Students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) increasingly attend local public schools, in which speech and language clinicians (SLCs) may lack experience with the individualized needs of a heterogeneous student population. This study explored the experiences of SLCs with students who are DHH in three different types of educational settings. Fourteen SLCs were interviewed and discussed a case study. Responses were transcribed, data coded, and emergent themes identified. Analysis was verified through triangulation of data and trustworthiness strategies. Results indicated that the skill sets of SLCs working with children who were DHH were dependent on contextual factors, such as educational placement and communication mode used, and that development of these skills requires direct experience, collaboration, and structural supports. Institutions across the deaf education spectrum should consider forming alliances to improve information-sharing and collaborative learning in order to improve service delivery in all settings., (© The Author(s) 2019.
