Introduction Life cycle costing is an important management tool that takes into account the implications of planning, acquiring, operating, maintaining, and disposing of an asset during its complete life cycle. A major hindrance to the procurement of expensive equipment in developing countries is the lack of a reliable framework combining and integrating all the equipment life cycle aspects into procurement process. Methods The study was conducted from the data collected from the bids that were received for procurement of two robotic track-based central laboratories which were installed at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. The procurement was done as per the guidelines laid down under General Finance Rules (GFR) 2017 following the two bid systems: technical bid and price/commercial bid. Results A complete financial analysis of the robotic laboratory was done that involved gathering of all the pertinent financial information into one place and then using that data to analyze the feasibility of the bid. The life cycle costs of both the labs were calculated by assuming the life of equipment as 10 years and by factoring in cost of equipment including 5-year warranty, comprehensive maintenance from years 6 to 10, indicative cost of all reagents for 10 years, and indicative cost of all other consumables for 10 years. Conclusion Results showed that the cost of equipment alone should not be the sole predictor of making purchase decisions of equipment. Further research may additionally explore differences between processes being followed in government versus private organizations, as well as national guidelines and subnational practices. Presence of Chlamydia trachomatis in endocervix was determined in 2466 women attending a tertiary care hospital in New Delhi, India over a period of 16 years, using a monoclonal-based direct immunofluorescence assay, tissue culture isolation, and a conventional PCR assay. Chlamydia antigen could be detected in 391 out of 2466 (15.85%) of patients studied; in 27.27% women with PID, 16.74% women with cervicitis, 16.03% women with infertility, and 12.06% women with adverse pregnancy outcomes, respectively. There was a statistically significant decreasing trend in Chlamydia antigen positivity between the years 1994-1999 and 2000-2004; the apparent decline in antigen positivity between the years 2000-2004 and 2005-2010 was not statistically significant. Antigen detection assay detected equal number of positives as the PCR assay; tissue culture isolation demonstrated lower positivity. In a few representative specimens from cervicitis patients, genotyping was done using RFLP pattern analysis of C. trachomatis MOMP gene amplified by PCR assay, all of these belonged to Chlamydia trachomatis serovar E. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is the apex super-specialty, quaternary referral hospital of India. Its outpatient departments (OPDs) handle over 2.5 million patients every year, a large proportion of whom travel up to 2500 km for treatment because specialist facilities are not available in their regions. We conducted a descriptive study of 58 AIIMS faculty staff members, using a self-administered questionnaire followed by interviews with selected faculty members. During the year 2006, a total of 2,566,492 patients attended the various OPDs at the AIIMS, of whom 1,427,466 (56%) were old patients, i.e. they attended the OPD for follow-up. The questionnaire responses revealed that 55 (95%) of the respondents routinely provided follow-up medical advice to their patients using the telephone, email and/or letters. Only 3 (5%) respondents stated that they did not use any such means for follow-up of their patients. Most of the respondents identified benefits in the use of telemedicine and did not envisage any major difficulties in using it for the follow-up of patients. If appropriate tele follow-up facilities were available, probably more than one million OPD visits could be avoided annually at the AIIMS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is an important fruit vegetable, commercially cultivated in the tropics and subtropics. However, the most serious constraint on eggplant production is damage caused by eggplant shoot and fruit borer (ESFB). The development of resistant transgenic plants, using an insecticidal crystal protein gene, is an available crop protection option. A CrylAc gene obtained from the National Research Center for Plant Biotechnology (NRCPB), New Delhi, India, was transformed via Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer into an improved inbred line of eggplant (IVBL-9). Hypocotyls proved to be the most effective and suitable explants, with a transformation frequency of 17.3% and 2.9 shoots per explant. PCR and Southern blot analyses confirmed the presence of a single copy insertion of the CrylAc gene in seven independent transgenic plants. The insertion of a single copy of the gene was also confirmed by segregation analysis of T1 seed from T0 plants. ELISA analyses revealed the presence of the CrylAc protein, and quantitative estimates confirmed significant levels of CrylAc protein (2.46 4.33 ng ml-1 leaf extract) expressed in all seven transformed plants. High levels of expression of this insecticidal protein resulted in significant larval mortality and in the reduced growth of any surviving larva on transformed eggplant tissue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
