Marrying too old, too young, or not at all could elicit scorn from all sides: family, friends and neighbours. The same could occur when a partner was much younger or older. During modernization new societal norms on marriage are supposed to have emerged and to have become more pervasive, as individual access to and timing of marriage became less dependent on family fortunes and family strategies. In this article, life courses of more than 15,000 Dutch individuals are studied in order to answer the question: was their timing of marriage and choice of partner related to (changing) life scripts -- and what social or cultural groups were the carriers of these scripts -- or still predominantly determined by family dynamics? Using data from the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study, this paper compares the partners of economically successful women with those of women who have fared less well on the labor market. First, socioeconomic and attitudinal within-couple homogamy is investigated. Second, hypotheses derived from social capital theory and companionate theory are tested to examine how socioeconomic and attitudinal characteristics of male partners are related to women's economic success. Economically successful women tend to have high-income men, suggesting an accumulation of favorable material resources. Men's supportive behavior rather than their attitudes contribute to their wives' economic success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT The paper investigates the process of partner choice and the specific role of geographical distance in this process. This focus on the spatial component is a unique and new approach to address the topic. By adopting a qualitative approach, the decision-making process preceding partner choice is captured, including the preferences people have for partners, the norms influencing partner choice, and the places people go to meet potential partners. In a Dutch village, focus groups were organised around the topic. The results show that place is crucial in partner choice. Partners from close by are preferred as that is convenient and as they are seen as trustworthy persons. Spatial perceptions of people and places, based on perceived local cultural differences, affect the distance at which partners are found. The rural setting of the study, including mostly less educated participants, revealed that opportunities and norms are more important in partner choice in such a case, whereas preferences play a minor role. Local cultural diversity, from diverse reformed denominations to spatial perceptions of the mentality of people in nearby communities, affects patterns of social interaction. This study describes (1) the association between husbands' and wives' employment statuses and occupations in the Netherlands, (2) establishes possible trends in the association, and (3) explores to what extent the association can be attributed to educational homogamy. We use 12 waves of the Dutch Labor Force Survey (1994–2006), and use log-linear models to analyze the associations between the labor market positions of spouses. Overall, we find positive associations, implying that favorable positions are accumulated within households. For couples with children, the association between spouses' employment status is negative, which means that they divide paid labor. Over birth cohorts, the association between spouses' employment statuses becomes stronger, and between spouses' occupational success remains stable. Education is an important contributor to the occupational association, but still half of the association between spouses' success cannot be attributed to spouses' education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the spatial homogamy in the Netherlands. It explores the study on the role of geographical distance in partner choice in the country. It states that the spatial homogamy was measured by distance calculation before cohabitation between partners. The study shows that geography and demographic factors has influencing person to engage in spatial homogamy, and as the age increases, there is also an increase in spatial homogamy. Spatial pattern homogamy were also offered. The study also shows that partners founds an increasing shorter distance as urbanisation increases. Tables and charts are presented.

In this article, we investigate partner selection in The Netherlands, in the period 1840-1939, with particular attention to local homogamy. Our multivariate models show that local homogamy is closely related to the size of the local marriage market. Also, illiteracy, low social status, high age at marriage and widowhood increase homogamy. Communities that were isolated by water or by the national border tended to be more homogamous. On the other hand, inmigrant men were very likely to marry a woman in another municipality. The presence of a railroad broke down the isolation of marriage markets. Finally, local homogamy declined in the late 19th and early 20th Century, which can probably be related to the increase of education, travel and communication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines long-term trends in the pattern of age homogamy among first marriages, using vital registration data on all first marriages contracted between 1850 and 1993 in the Netherlands. After discussing the main mechanisms that could account for trends in age differences, we show that age differences between spouses narrowed considerably between 1850 and 1970. In this study, the timing of the first childbirth is studied using information about characteristics of both partners. Empirical research on factors influencing fertility behavior usually focuses on characteristics of women only. However, although couple homogamy with regard to religion and education is high, it is far from complete. Heterogamous couples are especially interesting, because they can be expected to agree less among themselves about the timing of first childbirth than homogamous couples do. In this study, the context specificity of the determinants of childbearing has examined by comparing couples with and without cohabitation experience. The sociocultural specificity is studied using data from the Netherlands and Flanders. Results from hazard models based on a representative sample of young couples show, in general, that in Flanders a sphere-of-interest rule of decision making and in the Netherlands an egalitarian rule are at play in the decision on the timing of the first birth among couples. Contextual differences show that more specific theories on factors influencing the family formation process are needed.

In this paper, we test for a trend toward secularization in Dutch society between 1938 and 1983, using religious assortative marriage as an indicator. use loglinear modelling techniques similar to those used in mobility analysis to control for the sizes of the denominations. In addition, spatial dispersion is controlled by repeating the analysis for provinces in the years 1938, 1963 and 1983. Blau's macro-sociological theory of intergroup relations is used to provide a theoretical foundation for the research techniques used. This is supplemented by a specification of the mechanisms through which macro-Sociological factors such as industrialization can influence individual decisions, resulting in religious assortative marriage. In marriage for members of the orthodox protestant Re-Reformed church and for Catholics followed a similar trend: more or less constant until the end of the 1950th, a sharp drop during the 1960s, and a more gradual decline after 1973. However, in marriage among members of the liberal protestant Dutch Reformed Church fluctuation slightly with no apparent trend. This provides qualified support for the proposition that religion has become less salient in Dutch society during the l960s and 1970s. The analysis per province shows that in 1938 and 1963, despite a substantial loss of information, the patterns found at the aggregated level were replicated at provincial level. In this article, we examine the influence of individual attributes (education, parental education, religious homogamy of parents, religious homogamy of respondent and spouse, frequency of attending religious services, and denomination) and contextual characteristics (cohort and period effects of secularization) on the risk of leaving a faith, using life-event data from the Dutch Family Survey 1992-1993. This approach allows a stronger test of the direction of causality, and enables us to disentangle life-cycle, period, and cohort effects. The results show that education, parental education, and marrying a non-religious spouse significantly increase the risk of becoming unchurched. With regard to the influence of both one's own and one's parent? education, it appears that up to the level of higher secondary education (HAVO) each higher level of education linearly increases the risk of becoming unchurched. Also, the results show a non-linear life-cycle effect: people are more likely to leave their faith when they are in their late teens. In this article we raise the question whether there is a relationship between the labour-market status of partners in the Netherlands in 1985-6. Possible explanations for such a relationship are represented by three hypotheses, namely the shared restrictions hypothesis, the spouse selection hypothesis, and the influence hypothesis. The explanations mentioned are tested for four types of labour-market status, namely employed, unemployed, disabled, and doing housework. Our analyses indicate that a relationship between the labour-market statuses of partners does exist and that the hypotheses provide sufficient explanation for the observed (non)-employment homogamy. For disablement homogamy and (un)employment homogamy we find hardly any indication that shared restrictions, spouse selection, or mutual influence play an important role. After controlling for these possible explanations it remains the case that unemployed and disabled persons more often have an unemployed or disabled partner and less often have an employed partner.
