Dynamic simulation is a powerful tool for accurately evaluating the thermal demands of buildings and assessing the impact of energy refurbishment actions on their final consumption. Conversely, semi-stationary models are widely adopted in commercial applications for its simplified approach, which reduce calculation times, resulting in standardized results showing a certain deviation with respect to the real energy This paper presents the energy and economic comparison between the dynamic simulation and semi-stationary approaches for the calculation of primary energy demand of residential buildings. The semi-stationary method, used by the legislation to calculate the buildings energy label, is based on an energy performance parameter, not representative of the real energy demand. Conversely, an approach based on dynamic simulation provides a more reliable estimation of the primary energy demand. The main novelty of this paper is to numerically prove that the energy and economic savings calculated by means of software based on the current legislation may be overestimated. In this work, the dynamic simulation of the building-plant system is performed by TRaNsient SYstem Simulation (TRNSYS) program. Each building apartment is divided in thermal zones, where the internal heat gains are defined in detail. The semi-stationary simulation of the building-plant system is performed according to the Italian standard UNI TS 11300. The models allow one to evaluate the yearly primary energy demand, along with the energy bill and CO 2 emissions. A specific case study is developed for a residential building located in Naples (Italy). The models are used to calculate the building energy demand for several scenarios, considering different thermal transmittances of the building elements. A centralized solar hybrid heating and cooling system satisfying the thermal, cooling and sanitary water demands of a typical Italian small district composed of six residential buildings situated in Naples (southern Italy) is modelled, simulated and analysed through the software TRNSYS over a period of 5 years. The plant is based on the operation of solar thermal collectors coupled with seasonal borehole storage; the solar field is also composed of photovoltaic solar panels connected with electric energy storage. An adsorption chiller powered by solar energy is adopted for cooling purposes, while a condensing boiler is used as an auxiliary unit. The performance of the proposed system has been assessed from energy, environmental and economic points of view and contrasted with the operation of a typical Italian heating and cooling plant, highlighting the following main results: saving of primary energy consumption up to 40.2%; (decrease of equivalent CO2 emissions up to 38.4%; reduction of operating costs up to 40.1%; and simple pay-back period of about 20 years. Abstract This paper analyses the energy, environmental and economic performance of a future scenario where electric vehicles are connected to efficient buildings powered by building integrated flat-plate photovoltaic/thermal collectors, equipped with electric energy storage. The produced renewable electricity and thermal energy are exploited for building electrical and thermal applications. The surplus of produced electricity is stored into the electrical battery and used to charge the electric vehicle. The proposed system is modelled and dynamically simulated within the TRNSYS environment, where special attention is paid to the design of suitable system control strategies, aiming at optimizing the exploitation of the solar energy for electricity and heating purposes. To this aim, a sensitivity analysis is also carried out to find out the optimal system configuration. A case study analysis, relative to the weather zone of Naples (South Italy), is conducted to evaluate the energy, economic and environmental feasibility of the investigated scenario. Simulation results show that, with respect to a reference system, a remarkable reduction of electricity from the grid is achieved, corresponding to a primary energy saving equal to 57.66%. In this paper four different air conditioning systems designed for a building located in Naples, are investigated. The first plant is based on distributed energy conversion systems: twelve boilers and twelve chillers. In the second solution the space heating demand is satisfied by a centralised boiler while the cooling load is met by a centralised chiller. The third option consists of a trigeneration plant. The fourth configuration is composed by an electric heat pump satisfying space heating and cooling and a centralised boiler used for domestic needs. Dynamic simulations have been carried out to compare the energy and environmental performance of the centralised systems with those achieved by the distributed one. Besides, as further loads, for the third option, two electric vehicles charged by the cogenerated electricity surplus are compared to diesel cars. The results show that the best energy and environmental performance are achieved by the cogenerator-based system, with a primary energy demand of 120.6 MWh/y and equivalent dioxide carbon emissions of 25.2 t/y in the configuration without vehicles. This result is also confirmed with electric and diesel vehicles. Abstract In this paper the design and the energy performance investigation of a new flat-plate solar thermal air collector prototype is presented. The adoption of cost-effective materials and simple design solutions represent the main novelties of the proposed device when compared to existing commercial collectors. In addition, the prototype is suitably designed to be integrated into the building envelope (façade), which is a key feature for the market uptake of building integrated solar thermal systems. The paper includes the description of the dynamic simulation model, developed for the energy and economic performance analyses of the whole building-prototype system. The simulation model, implemented with a computer code written in MatLab, is able to predict both active (hot air production for building space heating) and passive (winter free heating and summer overheating) effects due to the building integration of the proposed solar collector. By such tool, indoor comfort investigations can also be carried out. The dynamic simulation models of both the building and the collector prototype were successfully validated. In order to show the features of the developed simulation code, a suitable case study was carried out. It refers to an office space, part of a high-rise multi-use building, simulated as located in three different weather zones (Freiburg, Naples and Almeria). The examined solar collector is modelled as vertically integrated into the building façade, and three different orientations (East, South-East and South) were taken into account. Interesting results for the energetic, economic and occupants comfort points of view are obtained. By taking into account an initial cost of the system of about 5 k€, the primary energy savings achieved by the proposed system against the traditional buildings range between 1.9 and 8.0 MWh/y (depending on the selected weather zone and backup system). This paper proposes a novel approach in order to accurately calculate the savings due to heat metering. The approach is based on a detailed dynamic simulation of building-plant systems. The building is geometrically modelled in Google Sketchup and linked to the TRNSYS environment, including an extremely detailed model for the simulation of building thermo-physical behavior. All the models are validated using the data provided by the occupants. The model allows one to evaluate the yearly energy demand, energy supplied by radiators, heat gains, etc. A specific case study is developed for a residential building located in Naples (South Italy). The developed model is used to calculate the building energy demand for 3 scenarios: centralized heating system not equipped with heat metering; centralized heating system with thermostatic valves and not equipped with heat metering; centralized heating system with thermostatic valves and equipped with heat metering. Abstract: In this paper the integration of vegetable oil-fed reciprocating engines with solar thermal collector is investigated, seeking to design a novel polygeneration system producing: electricity, space heating and cooling and domestic hot water, for a university building located in Naples (Italy), assumed as case study. The polygeneration system is based on the following main components: concentrating parabolic trough solar collector, double-stage LiBr–H2O absorption chiller and a reciprocating engine fed by vegetable oil. The engine operates at full load producing electrical energy which is in part consumed by the building lights and equipments, in part used by the system passive loads and the rest is eventually sold to the grid. In fact, the engine is grid connected in order to perform a convenient net metering. The system was designed and then simulated by means of a zero-dimensional transient simulation model, developed using the TRNSYS software. The simulation tool developed by the authors allows one to analyze the results for different time basis (minutes, days, weeks, months and years), from both energetic and economic points of view. Worldwide, the design, renovation, and sustainable management of port buildings play a crucial role for sustainability. In this framework, a computer simulation of a building's thermal behaviour is an almost mandatory tool for making informed decisions. However, the development of a building energy model is a challenging task that could discourage its adoption. A possible solution would be to exploit an existing Building Information Modeling (BIM) model to automatically generate an accurate and flexible Building Energy Modeling (BEM) one. Such a method, which can substantially improve decision-making processes, still presents some issues and needs to be further investigated, as also detectable from the literature on the topic. In this framework, a novel workflow to extrapolate BIM data for energy simulation is proposed and analysed in this paper. Here, the BIM to BEM approach was tested as a useful tool for the maritime industry to improve the implementation of effective energy-saving measures. Specifically, in order to prove the capabilities of the proposed method, a maritime passenger station in Naples was chosen as case study and investigated by comparing different strategies to reduce the annual primary energy consumption. The optimal level of modelling detail required by a trustable building energy assessment was also investigated. By the proposed method, interesting primary energy savings (ranging from 24 to 41%) are achieved and CO2 emissions avoided (ranging from 16 to 34 tons CO2/year) for the investigated building, proving the potential of this approach. Definitely, this paper proves the validity of the proposed methodology and emphasizes its numerous benefits towards the achievements of the most modern sustainability standards. This paper presents a thermodynamic, economic, and environmental analysis of a renewable polygeneration system connected to a district heating and cooling network. The system, fed by geothermal energy, provides thermal energy for heating and cooling, and domestic hot water for a residential district located in the metropolitan city of Naples (South of Italy). The produced electricity is partly used for auxiliaries of the thermal district and partly sold to the power grid. A calibration control strategy was implemented by considering manufacturer data matching the appropriate operating temperature levels in each component. The cooling and thermal demands of the connected users were calculated using suitable building dynamic simulation models. An energy network dedicated to heating and cooling loads was designed and simulated by considering the variable ground temperature throughout the year, as well as the accurate heat transfer coefficients and pressure losses of the network pipes. The results were based on a 1-year dynamic simulation and were analyzed on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis. The performance was evaluated by means of the main economic and environmental aspects. Two parametric analyses were performed by varying geothermal well depth, to consider the uncertainty in the geofluid temperature as a function of the depth, and by varying the time of operation of the district heating and cooling network. Additionally, the economic analysis was performed by considering two different scenarios with and without feed-in tariffs. Based on the assumptions made, the system is economically feasible only if feed-in tariffs are considered: the minimum Simple Pay Back period is 7.00 years, corresponding to a Discounted Pay Back period of 8.84 years, and the maximum Net Present Value is 6.11 M€, corresponding to a Profit Index of 77.9% and a maximum Internal Rate of Return of 13.0%. The system allows avoiding exploitation of 27.2 GWh of primary energy yearly, corresponding to 5.49∙103 tons of CO2 avoided emissions. In European Union Countries, local authorities have developed their own Sustainable Energy Action Plan aiming at planning the urban strategies to achieve the European Union and national 2020 energy targets. This document is used for detecting and deploying the energy measures which each municipality should adopt in order to reduce the environmental impact of the municipality activities. Further efforts are expected to define the strategies for achieving 2050 goals. In this framework, this work deals with the dynamic estimation energy saving actions for small districts located in different Italian weather zones (Naples and Turin, located in South and North Italy, respectively). The data of the Sustainable Energy Action Plan were used to develop suitable dynamic models, implemented in TRNSYS environment, including different buildings of selected districts. In particular, all the buildings were modelled by means of the Type 56 of TRNSYS, coupled to the Google SketchUp TRNSYS3d plug-in. By means of Type 56, it is possible to take into account and simulate the buildings geometry, envelope, windows, lighting, machineries heat gains schedule as well as the buildings users' occupation and activity. Given the loads, several energy efficient renovation alternatives based on the adoption of air-to-air conventional and carbon dioxide heat pumps, evacuated thermal collectors and photovoltaic panels, as well as the envelope renovation of all the public and private buildings of the district, are proposed and compared. Results, obtained by detailed dynamic energy and environmental analyses, can be used as guidelines for the local authorities to implement suitable energy efficiency actions of existing buildings in order to reduce both the thermal energy and carbon dioxide emissions due to the building space heating/cooling, domestic hot water and electricity. The proposed renewable layout for Naples case study achieves a primary energy savings of 58% with a payback period of 4 years. This paper focuses on the energy and economic analysis of the Building To Vehicle To Building (V2B2) concept, conducted through a comprehensive parametric and sensitivity analysis. The idea behind this novel vehicle to building energy management is to exploit the use of electric vehicles as energy vectors to exchange electricity among buildings with the aim to accelerate the development of a novel zero energy paradigm, while promoting the deployment of renewable energy sources, accelerating the widespread usage of electric vehicles, and streamlining the regulation of charging stations in our future communities. In order to evaluate the potentials of the proposed schemes, a comprehensive parametric analysis is conducted to size the design and operating parameters which maximize the self-production and self-consumption of building integrated renewable energy technologies at a cluster level. The paper investigates the energy and economic performance of different V2B2 energy management schemes including a residential building, an office building, and an electric vehicle, which feature a basic cluster of human-linked energy consumers. The study is conducted by means of a novel in-house developed dynamic simulation tool, suitably enhanced to model the system operation. Numerical results, obtained for a representative weather zone (Mediterranean climate of Naples, South-Italy), show that through the V2B2 scheme, a remarkable exploitation of off-site renewable energy production is achieved, producing a significant reduction of fossil fuel consumption from the grid. Electric air-conditioning systems driven by electricity from a wind turbine can be defined as wind electric and cooling systems according to the definition of solar-activated air-conditioners. They can potentially contribute to reduce primary energy demand and CO2 emission in the civil sector. In this paper, mini wind turbines are considered coupled with a ground source heat pump in order to serve an office building for air-conditioning and supply the electricity surplus for the pure electric load of the user. Different plant configurations are considered. First of all, assessments with two kinds of wind turbines (5–5.5 kW), vertical and horizontal axis, are performed, also considering the coupling with one and two identical wind generators. Secondly, to better use on-site electricity, a parametric study is proposed taking into account different battery storage system sizes (3.2–9.6 kWh). Finally, the plant is simulated in two locations: Naples and Cagliari. Simulation results demonstrate that the source availability mainly affects the system performance. In Cagliari, the primary energy reduction per kWh of final energy demand (for pure electric load, space heating, and cooling) is equal to 1.24, 54.8% more than in Naples. In addition, the storage system limits the interaction with the power grid, lowering the exported electricity from about 50% to about 27% for Naples and from 63% to 50% for Cagliari. This paper focuses on the experimental validation of a building energy performance simulation tool by means of a comparative analysis between numerical results and measurements obtained on a real test room. The empirical tests were carried out for several months under variable weather conditions and in free-floating indoor temperature regime (switched off HVAC system). Measurements were exploited for validating an in-house simulation tool, implemented in MatLab and called DETECt, developed for dynamically assessing the energy performance of buildings. Results show that simulated indoor air and surface room temperatures resulted in very good agreement with the corresponding experimental data; the detected differences were often lower than 0.5 °C and almost always lower than 1 °C. Very low mean absolute and percentage errors were always achieved. In order to show the capabilities of the developed simulation tool, a suitable case study focused on innovative solar radiation high-reflective coatings, and infrared low-emissivity materials is also presented. The performance of these coatings and materials was investigated through a comparative analysis conducted to evaluate their heating and cooling energy saving potentials. Simulation results, obtained for the real test cell considered as equipped with such innovative coatings and material, show that for the weather zone of Naples a 5% saving is obtained both in summer and in winter by simultaneously adopting a high-reflectance coating and a low- emissivity plaster for roof/external walls and interior walls, respectively.
