Beetles of the family Tenebrionidae, particularly those of the subfamily Pimeliinae, are highly diverse and abundant in desert ecosystems. The sensitivity of the many wingless species to geographical and ecological isolation makes them ideal candidates for studying effects of climatological and/or geophysical changes on organismal diversity. Our study focuses on Brinckia , the only genus of the subtribe Hypomelina adapted to coastal sand dune hummocks (nabkhas) and restricted to that environment along the Namib Desert and the transitional Namib south of the Orange River. Today, Brinckia appear to be common along the coast, albeit with different species, wherever the absence of shifting sand dunes enables the beach hummocks to form, mainly around Salsola and Zygophyllum species. Therefore, past diversification can probably be directly attributed to temporary extinctions of this habitat in certain coastal regions. The presumed center of origin and diversification of Brinckia is on the Gariep Karoo coastline between Port Nolloth and Lüderitz. Our molecular phylogenetic analysis suggests that the first split within Brinckia occurred ∼2.3 Ma, i.e., relatively recently, and may be associated with aridification that occurred at that time due to global climate change. However, subsequent speciation is more likely the result of the emergence of extensive dune fields, which may have been responsible for temporary habitat degradation in the supralittoral zone. More recent, recurrent and ongoing diversification since the mid-Pleistocene transition, as observed for tenebrionids along the coast of the Atacama and Peruvian deserts, is not typical of Brinckia and supports the stability of their coastal habitat despite glacial climate oscillations. To investigate whether the sensitivity to environmental temperature varies between nocturnal and diurnal species of tenebrionid beetle, the metabolic rates of three diurnal species (Onymacris plana Peringuey, Onymacris rugatipennis Haag and Physadesmia globosa Haag) and three nocturnal species (Epiphysa arenicola Penrith, Gonopus sp. and Stips sp.) of beetles from the Namib Desert are measured over a range of temperatures (15-40 °C) that are experienced by these beetles in their natural habitat. The diurnal species O. plana, O. rugatipennis and P. globosa exhibit temperature-independent metabolic rates (mean Q10 = 1.2) within temperature ranges that are ecologically relevant for diurnal desert beetles (30-40 °C). Onymacris plana, in particular, has a 20-40 °C rate-temperature slope (0.007 log10 mL O2 h-1 g-1 °C-1; Q10 = 1.1) that is less than half that of the other five beetle species (0.022-0.063 log10 mL O² h-1 g-1 °C-1; Q10 ranges from 1.3-1.9), suggesting that O. plana is more metabolically independent of temperature than the other nocturnal and diurnal tenebrionids being investigated. Animals with metabolic rates that are decoupled from body temperature (or ambient temperature) may have an ecological advantage that allows them to exploit thermal and spatial niches during extreme temperature conditions. A systematic classification of Namib Desert darkling beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) based on morphological characters is complicated as strong selection pressures exerted by desert conditions have led to a suite of convergent morphological characteristics. Here we present a first and preliminary insight into the relationships within the tribes Zophosini, Eurychorini and Adesmiini using molecular methods. We analysed partial sequences of the mitochondrial genes cytochrome oxidase II and cytochrome b of 16 individuals comprising 12 species. Minimum Evolution, Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian inference were applied for analysing sequence data. The genus Pimelia was used as outgroup and for calibrating divergence time estimates. Overall, results supported phylogenies constructed on morphological characters. The proposed monophyly of the artificially defined tribe Zophosini did receive sufficient support. Speciation events in Namibian darkling beetles likely occurred during periods of aridification about 35 Mya, 16 Mya and 5-10 Mya. Those periods could be related to geological events and climate change due to the glaciation of Antarctica and the development of the Benguela current. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In the Namib Desert fog represents an alternative water source. This is utilised by Darkling beetles (Tenebrionidae) that employ different strategies for obtaining the fog water. Some dig trenches in the sand, while others use their own bodies as fog collectors assuming a characteristic fog-basking stance. Two beetle species from the genus Onymacris have been observed to fog-bask on the ridges of the sand dunes. These beetles all have smooth elytra surfaces, while another species with elytra covered in bumps is reported to have specialised adaptations facilitating water capture by fog-basking. To resolve if these other beetles also fog-bask, and if an elytra covered in bumps is a more efficient fog water collector than a smooth one, we examined four Namib Desert beetles; the smooth Onymacris unguicularis and O. laeviceps and the bumpy Stenocara gracilipes and Physasterna cribripes. Here we describe the beetles' fog-basking behaviour, the details of their elytra structures, and determine how efficient their dorsal surface areas are at harvesting water from fog. Results: The beetles differ greatly in size. The largest P. cribripes has a dorsal surface area that is 1.39, 1.56, and 2.52 times larger than O. unguicularis, O. laeviceps, and S. gracilipes, respectively. In accordance with earlier reports, we found that the second largest O. unguicularis is the only one of the four beetles that assumes the head standing fog-basking behaviour, and that fog is necessary to trigger this behaviour. No differences were seen in the absolute amounts of fog water collected on the dorsal surface areas of the different beetles. However, data corrected according to the sizes of the beetles revealed differences. The better fog water harvesters were S. gracilipes and O. unguicularis while the large P. cribripes was the poorest. Examination of the elytra microstructures showed clear structural differences, but the elytra of all beetles were found to be completely hydrophobic. Conclusions: The differences in fog water harvesting efficiency by the dorsal surface areas of beetles with very different elytra surface structures were minor. Dehydration of Onymacris unguicularis (Haag) for 10 days at 27°C resulted in a weight loss of 14.9%, and a 37% decrease in haemolymph volume. Although there was an overall decrease in the lipid content during this period, metabolic water production was insufficient to maintain total body water (TBW). Rehydration resulted in increases in body weight (6.2% of initial weight), TBW (to normality), and haemolymph volume (sub-normal at the end of rehydration). Despite an increase of 44.0 mg in the wet weight of O. unguicularis after drinking for 1h, there was little change in the water content at this time, although the total lipid content increased significantly. Increases in haemolymph osmolality, sodium, potassium, chloride, amino acid and total sugar concentrations during dehydration were subject to osmoregulatory control. No evidence of an active amino acid-soluble protein interchange was noted during dehydration or rehydration. Haemolymph trehalose levels were significantly increased at the end of rehydration (relative to immediate pre-rehydration values), indicating de novo sugar synthesis at this time. Osmotic and ionic regulation was evident during rehydration, but control of OP during haemolymph-dilution is poor and accomplished largely by the addition to the haemolymph of free amino acids and solute(s) not measured in this study. There was little mobilization of sodium and chloride ions from storage sites at this time. The lesser osmoregulatory ability of Onymacris unguicularis and perhaps earlier susceptibility to osmotic stress, a significantly high normal blood glycerol level (relative to other diurnal adesmiine tenebrionids), and a water storage mechanism associated with synthesis of fat, probably all contribute to the development of fog-basking behaviour in this species. Simple Summary: The Namib Desert has a large diversity of darkling beetle species. All these beetles are flightless and feed on plant detritus. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the respiration strategies used by these beetles are linked to their ecology and behaviour. Three beetle species, which are all active during the day, in direct sunshine, running across the sand surface, but found in different parts of the desert, were chosen for this study. All three beetle species used intermittent breathing. They held their breath for several minutes and released CO2 in pulses. The large beetle species, which runs rapidly on the dune slip face when air temperatures are high, used evaporative cooling to prevent over-heating. The water used in the cooling comes from their respiratory surfaces and is replenished from metabolising food and drinking water droplets left on vegetation after a fog event. The two smaller beetle species, which inhabit the gravel plains, limit the area of the respiratory surface exposed to the atmosphere, which reduces body water loss. These two beetle species are not known to drink water, and thus have a greater need to conserve their body water. The respiratory physiology of three diurnal ultraxerophilous tenebrionid beetles inhabiting either the dune slipface or gravel plain in the Namib Desert was investigated. The role of the mesothoracic spiracles and subelytral cavity in gas exchange was determined by flow-through respirometry. All three species exhibited the discontinuous gas exchange cycles with a distinct convection based flutter period and similar mass specific metabolic rates. There was variation in their respiration mechanics that related to the ecology of the species. The largest beetle species, Onymacris plana, living on the dune slipface, has a leaky subelytral cavity and used all its spiracles for gas exchange. Thus, it could use evaporative cooling from its respiratory surface. This species is a fog harvester as well as able to replenish water through metabolising fats while running rapidly. The two smaller species inhabiting the gravel plains, Metriopus depressus and Zophosis amabilis, used the mesothoracic spiracles almost exclusively for gas exchange as well as increasing the proportional length of the flutter period to reduce respiratory water loss. Simple Summary: Rain seldom falls in the extremely arid Namib Desert in Namibia, but when a certain amount falls, it causes seeds to germinate, grass to grow and seed, dry, and turn to litter that gradually decomposes over the years. It is thought that such periodic flushes and gradual decay are fundamental to the functioning of the animal populations of deserts. This notion was tested with litter-consuming darkling beetles, of which many species occur in the Namib. Beetles were trapped in buckets buried at ground level, identified, counted, and released. The numbers of most species changed with the quantity of litter, but some mainly fed on green grass and disappeared when this dried, while other species depended on the availability of moisture during winter. Several species required unusually heavy rainfalls to gradually increase their populations, while others the opposite, declining when wet, thriving when dry. All 26 beetle species experienced periods when their numbers were extremely low, but all had the capacity for a few remaining individuals to repopulate the area in good times. The remarkably different relationships of these beetles to common resources, litter, and moisture, explain how so many species can exist side by side in such a dry environment. Noy-Meir's paradigm concerning desert populations being predictably tied to unpredictable productivity pulses was tested by examining abundance trends of 26 species of flightless detritivorous tenebrionid beetles (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) in the hyper-arid Namib Desert (MAP = 25 mm). Over 45 years, tenebrionids were continuously pitfall trapped on a gravel plain. Species were categorised according to how their populations increased after 22 effective rainfall events (>11 mm in a week), and declined with decreasing detritus reserves (97.7–0.2 g m−2), while sustained by nonrainfall moisture. Six patterns of population variation were recognised: (a) increases triggered by effective summer rainfalls, tracking detritus over time (five species, 41% abundance); (b) irrupting upon summer rainfalls, crashing a year later (three, 18%); (c) increasing gradually after series of heavy (>40 mm) rainfall years, declining over the next decade (eight, 15%); (d) triggered by winter rainfall, population fluctuating moderately (two, 20%); (e) increasing during dry years, declining during wet (one, 0.4%); (f) erratic range expansions following heavy rain (seven, 5%). All species experienced population bottlenecks during a decade of scant reserves, followed by the community cycling back to its earlier composition after 30 years. By responding selectively to alternative configurations of resources, Namib tenebrionids showed temporal patterns and magnitudes of population fluctuation more diverse than predicted by Noy-Meir's original model, underpinning high species diversity.
