The MLLTRAP is a Penning trap system designed to perform highaccuracy nuclear mass measurements in its final stage aiming to use highlycharged ions. The goal is to reach an accuracy of 10-10, which is required for high-precision fundamental physics studies like the determination of fundamental constants and measurements of electron binding energies for QED at strong fields. The MLLTRAP at the Maier-Leibnitz-Laboratory (Garching) is a new Penning trap facility designed to combine several novel technologies to decelerate, charge breed, cool, bunch and purify the reaction products and perform high-accuracy nuclear and atomic mass measurements. At the new Munich high flux reactor FRM-II, the Munich Accelerator for Fission Fragments (MAFF) is under development. The main objective will be the production and study of new very heavy elements (Z>100). To obtain this goal, intense beams of neutron rich isotopes (7010[sup 14] n/s[sup *]cm[sup 2]) available at the new reactor. The target ion source design is based on the ANUBIS source at OSIRIS in Studvik, optimized for very high neutron fluxes. Using 1 g of [sup 235]U diluted in a graphite target, intensities of several 10[sup 11] ions/s for [sup 91]Kr, [sup 132]Sn, or [sup 144]Cs, e.g., are expected after mass separation. These singly charged ions will be charge bred in an electron cyclotron resonance ion source and then injected into the MAFF-LINAC to reach the energies at the Coulomb barrier. The production of intense ion beams of neutron rich isotopes by thermal neutron induced fission, the development of the target ion source, and the development of the fission target will be presented. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
