Abstract

An essay is presented examining the Moroccan Gnawa ritual music tradition. Ethnomusicological analysis is offered examining the ways in which the sacred-secular social division are bridged through the performative practices of the musicians. Further discussion is offered through fieldwork between 2006 and 2009, showing how different social distinctions and interactions are reflected in the music's development.
