The article focuses on the legal and environmental challenges posed by PFAS chemicals, which have become ubiquitous due to their durability and resistance. Topics include the origins and widespread use of PFAS, their serious human health and environmental impacts, and the evolving landscape of PFAS litigation and regulatory measures, with a particular focus on Minnesota's role and the significant legal actions taken against major PFAS manufacturers.

Factors were explored that predicted whether teachers sustained the use of a validated reading intervention. Seventy-three teachers from 37 schools in 3 states were asked in interviews whether they continued to use Kindergarten Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (KPALS) 1 year after their involvement in the program. A logistic regression model was created with teachers' yes/no responses as the dependent variable and with predictors identified as important to sustainability. Findings were consonant with current theoretical models of sustainability. The logistic regression model captured many key elements of teachers' decisions to sustain. Strongest predictors were teacher perceptions of the effectiveness of KPALS and degree of external technical support given them. (Contains 6 figures and 4 tables.)

Background: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a common cause of hip pain and a known risk factor for hip osteoarthritis (OA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) at a young age. Unfortunately, little is known about the specific factors associated with an increased risk of OA. Purpose: To (1) report the overall rate of symptomatic hip OA and/or THA in patients with FAI without surgical intervention and (2) identify radiographic features and patient characteristics associated with hip OA. Study Design: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A geographic database was used to identify all patients with hip pain and radiographs between 2000 and 2016. Chart review was performed to identify patients with FAI. Patient medical records were reviewed to obtain demographic information, clinical history, physical examination findings, imaging details, and treatment details. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to determine the rate of hip OA. Univariate and multivariate proportional hazard regression models were performed to determine risk factors for OA. Results: The study included 952 patients (649 female; 303 male; 1104 total hips) with FAI. The majority of hips had mixed type (n = 785; 71.1%), 211 (19.1%) had pincer type, and 108 (9.8%) had cam type. Mean age at time of presentation was 27.6 ± 8.7 years. Mean follow-up time was 24.7 ± 12.5 years. The rate of OA was 13.5%. THA was performed in 4% of patients. Male sex, body mass index (BMI) greater than 29, and increased age were risk factors for OA (male sex: hazard ratio [HR], 2.28; P <.01; BMI >29: HR, 2.11; P <.01; per year of increased age: HR, 1.11; P <.01.). Smoking and diabetes mellitus were not significant risk factors. No radiographic morphological features were found to be significant risk factors for OA. Conclusion: At mean follow-up of 24.7 years, 14% of hips had symptomatic OA and 4% underwent THA. BMI greater than 29, male sex, and increased age at the time of presentation with hip pain were risk factors for hip OA. The cohort consisted of a large percentage of mixed-type FAI morphologies, and no specific radiographic risk factors for OA were identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Ménière's disease (MD) is a constellation of otologic symptoms that includes aural fullness, tinnitus, hearing loss, and episodic vertigo. Even though the criteria for diagnosing the disorder was set forth in 1972, the causes are still not well understood. The purpose of this study was to describe the relationships between tests of hearing and vestibular function and length of time patients diagnosed with unilateral MD have experienced symptoms. Method: The charts of 254 patients with definite unilateral MD from the Mayo Clinic database were retrospectively reviewed. In order to be included, patients must have reported active MD diagnosis within the previous 5 years. Main outcome measures were results for audiometry, cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials, ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials, caloric test findings, video head impulse test, and sinusoidal harmonic acceleration. Results: Results indicate there is a significant effect of the duration of MD symptoms reported by the patient and findings on some tests of hearing and vestibular function. Specifically, pure-tone average, caloric paresis, and rotational chair phase were all positively correlated with duration of symptoms. Rotational chair gain was found to have an inverse relationship with time. We did not find that video head impulse test gain or certain vestibular evoked myogenic potential measures were significantly correlated with the reported duration of patient symptoms. Conclusions: Our results suggest that, although the duration of symptoms reported by the patient does correlate with a number of vestibular and hearing tests, the relationships are relatively weak. The number of attacks and severity of symptoms should be investigated to determine if they are better predictors of laboratory testing results in the patient with MD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
