Abstract

The article presents an update from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on an outbreak of Pseudomonas fluorescens bloodstream infections that was associated with the use of syringes that were preloaded with heparin intravenous catheter flush. The article describes the investigation of cases of the bloodstream infections in patients in Michigan and South Dakota who contracted the infections 3 months after the recall of the syringes in question. The article states that the patients developed delayed onset cases of Pseudomonas fluorescens bloodstream infections from past exposure to contaminated flush.
