An essay is presented which discusses the changing role of education in the 21st-century considering the decline of the automotive industry in Detroit, Michigan. It suggests the need to build a high-quality education system designed to meet the demands of the information age in order to rebuild Detroit and the city's middle class population. Also tackled are the economic consequences of inadequate education including increased wage and tax revenue, reduced healthcare costs and reliance on social welfare programs.
