This article presents the development of the Master of Science in Administration degree program at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The program, predicated upon the manpower needs for professionals and managers and founded upon the belief that effective management requires both situation-specific knowledge and situation-general skills, grew out of the School of Business Administration while incorporating discipline-based departments from across the campus. It can serve as a model for graduate education in communication, and other disciplines, for any type of institution. The model may be particularly useful to colleges and universities with relatively small graduate programs where department-based degrees may lack the student populations to be self-sustaining.
