Objective: To develop a Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) for the El Saltillo community, in Jilotepec, State of Mexico, with risk mapping purposes. Design/Methodology/Approach: A Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) was developed based on sociodemographic indicators, housing characteristics, and the conditions of the production systems. The information sources for the SVI indicators were obtained from official Basic Geostatistical Area (AGEB) censuses and from an online survey carried out in the community under study. The SVI was cross-referenced with data from four previously published natural hazard studies for risk mapping purposes. Results: The methodological proposal uses equal weight index statistical techniques to develop the SVI. Using online surveys is a clearly viable option for research studies that require to obtain more detailed data on housing characteristics, as well as the population's perception of certain changes in precipitation and temperature patterns that are happening in their community and the measures, they take to face these natural phenomena. Study Limitations/Implications: Online surveys are relatively recent, which implies the need to design and implement validation and sampling mechanisms for the results. Findings/Conclusions: Risk mapping enabled the territorial visualization and identification of the communal vulnerability conditions, which facilitates a conceptual approach to the social reality of the population and will allow the formulation of potential future scenarios of climate change and the implementation of public policies. The idea that discussions about justice ought to offer practical political guidance has gained force in recent years. In this context, Sen's Idea of Justice (2009) aims at fulfilling this role. I assess to what extent Sen's comparative approach to justice succeeds in providing a useful conceptual framework to reduce injustice in practice, as it claims. Using the context of poverty in Mexico, and the social programme Oportunidades/Prospera as illustration, I argue that Sen's approach remains insufficient to guide injustice-reduction actions effectively. First, I note that despite enhancing individual's capabilities, these social improvements have not translated into a more just social reality overall. Second, I associate these shortcomings to the failure of capability-enhancing policies in accounting for the relational reproduction of injustice. Therefore, I conclude that to reduce injustice, we need to broaden the scope of injustice-reduction policies to address the ways in which injustice is reproduced through social interactions. This research aims to better understand how the notion of cultural heritage in Mexican legislation is –and has been– used and abused, and its starting point is the legal environment of the cultural sphere as well as documents deriving from federal legislation. Through a qualitative approximation and an analysis of national and international regulations, a current landscape was sketched out of a social reality that is linked to social representations of the Mexican cultural heritage. Field research work in general corresponds to a determining phase of the process of direct knowledge of social actors and their collective dynamics that are usually permeated by harmonious coexistence, problems, conflicts, contradictions and, in some cases, by cultural, psychological, gender, and symbolic aggression and violence. In any situation, the researcher who enters the field to carry out ethnography or to do fieldwork with the use of various techniques and instruments of observation and data collection, faces very complex realities such as those of the global pandemic of Covid-19 that has modified personal, family, social, community and public life, as well as the direct relationship with social actors and research spaces. In this sense, the article contributes to the construction of knowledge about fieldwork based on the question: How can we investigate social reality in times of pandemic? The methodology consisted of the systematization of fieldwork experiences in postgraduate courses in Mexico from 2020 to 2021. It is concluded that it is necessary to rethink orthodox research projects, methodologies, techniques and instruments, prioritizing the emerging online social inquiry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Buena Risa Social Club is a humoristic-musical performance by Cuban-Mexican singer-songwriter Alejandro García Villalón ("Virulo"), who presented it at the Café Antropía in León de Los Aldama, Guanajuato, Mexico, on November 30, 2018. Considering the few studies carried out on his performative compositions, for the present essay a live sound recording of the musical event was used, the segmentation of the show, analysis of the literary-musical discourse, and an interpretation of the data obtained during the fieldwork. For this approach, methodological tools from the ethnomusicology of performance were used in its link to phenomenology and hermeneutics. This enabled an understanding of the creative mechanisms used by Virulo to subjectively exercise a critique of the prevailing social reality in Cuba, Mexico, and the United States from a sited perspective. Crime scene investigation reports, like other kids of official bureaucratic documents, serve an important purpose in the functioning of modern states. This article examines crime scene investigation reports from a city in southeastern Mexico pseudonymously calledLa Ciudad. The article combines textual discourse analysis of police suicide investigation reports with ethnographic analysis of police investigative practices to ask, how do law enforcement documents showcase the interactions between law enforcement agents and citizens? In what way can ethnographic analysis highlight and supplement the strengths and limitations of law enforcement documents as prisms of social reality? The complex and contested relationship between representatives of a Mexican law enforcement agency and the citizenry it claims to protect is visible in the documents it produces. The ethnographic material further deepens the reader's understanding of the ways in which law enforcement agents and common citizens form relationships based on negotiation and distrust. This article discusses how the construction and institutionalization of social representations in Tepoztlán, Mexico, have influenced the definition of tourism in this community. We propose the concept of an intimate experience economy to analyze the forms of institutionalization that places, practices, symbols, and relationships have and how they together generate what most people consider authentic experiences, recreation, and comfort. This article explores the difference and interplay between the border as legal/political fact and the borderland as complex social/cultural reality through the development and application of the theoretical concepts of moral geography and moral entrepreneur. I argue that these concepts provide a bridge between macro, structural views of 'the production of (borderland) space' as used by critical geographers and the more experiential orientation suggested by geographers and anthropologists in studies of cultural landscapes and 'place-making'. My particular concern is to apply and illustrate this argument through the ethnography of the desert borderlands straddling Arizona (USA) and Sonora (Mexico), but it is potentially useful in other contexts. Research for this risk perception study was carried out in the community of Juan Barragán, Municipality of Tonila, State of Jalisco, Mexico, located 8.4 km from the cone of the Colima volcano, asleep since 1913, beginning to wake up in 1999, promising to reach the violence of the high risk phase. The interaction of the population, the authorities and scientists or experts, actors on the volcanic risk stage, with their intermixed knowings, contributes to creating a collective perception. As a starting point, the population, using its own ways of thinking, reinterpreted "expert" knowledge and the guidelines recommended by the authorities, resulting in intersubjective life experience processes. Approaching the symbolic universes of what is social, this study will seek the role that meanings play in the population's actions, entering their reality through their words, reaching their thoughts and feelings, as an important phase in the research process itself, establishing a bridge between what the subjects perceive in their daily life and the actions they develop based on their own conception of the world. This paper reviews some of the particularities of the social reality of a group of professors who train teachers. Such aspects reveal diverse characteristic traits, and permit an understanding of the genesis of training processes. For this purpose, a direct line has been drawn to the origin and education of their parents, followed by indicators of gender, age, and incorporation into the subsystem. Lastly, the relations among the professors' positions are distinguished; at times, these relations show more homogeneity than differences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses an unfinished Mexican film ¡Que viva México! by a Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein. This film deals with visual influences of Mexican culture. The film is scripted on cultural renaissance after the revolutionary period, cultural politics, social reality and Rites of Realism. A trace of disruptive charge of montage can be found by reading the grain of the film.

The article focuses on an empirical study of a minority ethnic group from the state of Hidalgo, Mexico-the Tepehuas from Huethuetla and Barrio Aztlán. The objective of the study was to reflect on their social reality, focusing on aspects such as cosmovision, funeral rituals, and kinship. Their local and ethnic identity is explored. The work discusses discourse and associated practices in the analysis of indigenous communities with the aim of reflecting on the reality and production of those communities. The questions about what being Tepehua means and what being indigenous means are discussed.

The article examines the association between the English language, the American communication media and the perceptions of Mexican social issues by Mexican border and interior residents. The spread of the English language into Mexican national territory and its impact on the national culture of Mexico has been an important concern for the Mexican government. The Mexican cinema was often employed as a tool for sensitizing the Mexican population regarding the effects of the English language and U.S. culture on Mexican society. Continued exposure to foreign or imported mass media increases the chances that a foreign social reality will be accepted as ideology and world view. Given the sharing of a national border, it was not unexpected to find that Mexican border residents utilize communication media in English and from the United States more than interior residents of Mexico. Findings support the general observation that proximity to the United States enhances the opportunity for a Mexican border resident to utilize communication media in English and from the United States. Compared to the interior resident, the border resident has access to a communication media network in English and from the United States that does not have to be imported into the country.

The purpose of this article is to examine the validity of Max Weber's theory of domination as applied to Latin America and its social and political structures.The article concentrates on the advantages and risks involved when using the concept of patrimonialism to explain the authoritarian regimes of Latin American societies. To do this, the author examines how this concept has been applied for the study of the political organisation in different countries during various periods of time: the colonial era, the nineteenth century and contemporary societies.Focused on terminological analysis, the paper shows the conceptual problems of classical sociological theory when used for the study of social realities that were not at all central preoccupations for the original European writers. The author points out two main causes for the ambiguities and multiple meanings of concepts 1) the partial and fragmented reception of Weberian sociology in Latin America and 2) certain confusion already present in Weber's studies. El artículo habla de la paz y sus arquitectos que la construyen con justicia, enfocando en el caso de Chiapas, México. Los indígenas de Chiapas y otras partes del país han vivido muchos años de opresión y represión, políticamente y económicamente. Después del comienzo del conflicto armado en Chiapas, la revista "Xipe-Totek" mantuvo su posición de destacar la realidad social, económica y política de México y buscar soluciones a los problemas que afligieron el país. Durante estas épocas, si un indígena quería aprender e ir a la universidad, tendría que abandonar su cultura y adoptar nuevas tradiciones que son partes de la cultura dominante.
