Background: Mexico reports low follow-up completion rates among women with abnormal cervical cancer screenings. This study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to follow-up adherence among women with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and premalignant cervical lesions in Mexico. Methods: A mixed-methods study was conducted from February to April 2019. Participants included women undergoing follow-up care for high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) and premalignant lesions, along with health personnel from the Women's Healthcare Center (CAPASAM) in Mexico. Quantitative data were obtained from the Women's Cancer Information System and through a questionnaire about factors affecting follow-up adherence. Additionally, the health personnel involved completed a compliance checklist regarding care regulations. Descriptive statistics were used for analysis. Qualitative data were collected via semi-structured interviews with both groups, followed by a content analysis based on identified categories. The Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point System confirmed care process risks. Proposals to enhance the Early Detection Program for Prevention and Control of Cervical Cancer were collected from a CAPASAM health personnel nominal group. Results: Identified barriers to follow-up included low income among CAPASAM users, family provider roles limiting time for appointments, long waits for testing and results delivery, distant facilities, insufficient service hour communication, inadequate health personnel training, and a lack of systematic counseling. Hesitation toward follow-up was also linked to shame, apprehension, uncertainty, test aversion, fear of positive results, and limited cervical cancer and screening knowledge. Patriarchal attitudes of partners and limited access to the now-discontinued PROSPERA government program further discouraged follow-up. Facilitators comprised respectful treatment by CAPASAM staff, no-cost services, health campaigns, and positive user attitudes. Conclusions: The study found more barriers than facilitators to follow-up adherence, highlighting the need for strategies to bolster the Early Detection Program. Fractal dimension (D) can be used to characterise temporal changes of crown architecture of individual trees. Our goal in this study was to analyse seasonal changes in tree crown fractal dimension of two species of deciduous oaks (Quercus castanea and Q. obtusata) coexisting in a natural forest in central Mexico using low cost sampling, and relate these changes to morphological attributes and environmental variables. Every two months, from May 2017 to September 2018, for each oak species, we photographed fixed portions of the crowns of individual trees, measured their trunk diameters, and obtained average temperature and accumulated precipitation data recorded for the sampling date. From the obtained images, we calculated D values by the semivariogram method using three different variability estimators (square increment, isotropic, and transect variation). We identified a positive correlation between D and temperature, and a negative correlation between temperature and crown cover. The fractal dimension (D) of crowns of two deciduous oak species changes according to the tree's phenological stage. D values varied through time in relation to tree crown phenological variation, but not with crown cover dimension. We propose a model of annual D value fluctuation in deciduous trees, characterised by two high complexity peaks and two low complexity valleys, corresponding to the effects on crown cover of annual periods of leaf abscission and development. We summarize the clinical trials (CTs) main characteristics, including members of ethnic minorities from Latin America. We carried out a systematic search in six databases. We made a descriptive synthesis of CTs, summarizing the characteristics, interventions, main findings, results, and conclusions reported. 4411 studies were acquired in search strategy, leaving 24 CTs in the final selection. Of these, ten were randomized, four were non-randomized, and the remainder had other designs. Most of the studies were carried out in the population of infants and children (08), ten of the studies included only women, and two studies included men. Nine studies were conducted in Mexico, with the Mayan ethnic minority being mostly evaluated (05). In only 15 it was mentioned that their research was approved by a research ethics committee. Finally, half of the CTs reported funding from international agencies and third reported funding from government agencies. Our results show that that CTs in ethnic minorities are limited and reduced to a few native peoples of the continent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In September 2017, two strong earthquakes hit the central region of Mexico, producing substantial damage to the historical buildings. A retroactive analysis for assessing the pre-event seismic vulnerability of these constructions allowed for testing the suitability of an existing parameter-based approach based on material and geometrical features. More than 160 adobe buildings in four municipalities of the State of Morelos were surveyed and included in a vulnerability-oriented GIS database. Data were collected on-site and managed by resorting to open-source GIS software combined with a Python-based database management tool and a cloud-based platform for onsite data collection using mobile devices. The parameter-based approach was used for assessing the analytical seismic vulnerability of the buildings and implementing a secondary, more conservative assessment that considers uncertainties associated with the data acquisition process. The capabilities of the database were further used to train a Machine Learning algorithm aimed at overcoming some representativeness limitations of the parameter-based analytical method. This third approach was found to be suitable for assessing the vulnerability of the building typologies addressed in this investigation. The purpose of this study was to compare the characteristics of teaching performance in accordance with the opinion of students of different academic fields and curriculum stages in a Mexican state public university. The sample was composed of 729 randomly-selected courses, distributed over four semester periods. Descriptive and comparative statistical analyses were made. The results determined significant differences when natural-exact sciences were compared with administrative sciences (p = 0.003), and engineering with administrative sciences (p = 0.022) in the overall ratings and by dimension. Moreover, differences were found in the ratings by dimension between the curriculum stages. The study concludes in favor of considering the particularities of the pedagogical context in the interpretation of ratings, and of using them as a source of information when designing strategies for improving teacher training. Ecoepidemiology is an emerging field that attempts to explain how biotic, environmental, and even social factors influence the dynamics of infectious diseases. Particularly in vector-borne diseases, the study under this approach offers us an overview of the pathogens, vectors, and hosts that coexist in a given region and their ecological determinants. As a result of this, risk predictions can be established in a changing environment and how it may impact human populations. This paper is aimed at evaluating some ecoepidemiological characteristics of Chagas disease in a natural reserve in southeastern Mexico that borders human settlements. We carry out a cross-sectional study in 2022 where we search insects manually and with light traps. We set traps for small mammals and bats and conducted interviews with the inhabitants living around the study site. We identified the presence of Triatoma dimidiata and T. huehuetenanguensis species with a percentage of TcI T. cruzi infection of 68.4% (95% CI: 66.9-69.9). Temperature and humidity were not determining factors for the probability of insect capture. Of the 108 wild mammals (Chiroptera, Rodentia, and Didelphimorphia), none was infected with T. cruzi. Knowledge about Chagas disease in nearby inhabitants is poor, and some characteristics were found on the periphery of dwellings that could offer a refuge for insect vectors. With this information, surveillance strategies can be generated in the study area that reduce the risk of transmission of T. cruzi parasite to humans, and it is expected to motivate the use of this field in future research. The blackfin snook, Centropomus medius, is a valuable fish in American and Mexican markets, mainly from catches. Nonetheless, information and studies about the biology of this species still need to be made available; thus, its aquaculture should be developed. This study aimed to describe the seasonal changes of proximate composition during a reproductive cycle of C. medius, analyzing differences between tissues and their changes related to the reproductive process. The snook specimens were collected in Magdalena Bay, Baja California Sur, Mexico, and measured every month from September 2001 to November 2002. Liver, gonads, muscle tissue, and intraperitoneal fat (IPF) were sampled and weighed. The gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic index (HSI), IPF ratio, and condition factor index (K) were calculated. The biochemical composition was analyzed in the gonad, liver, and muscle. The reproductive period (RP) of wild C. medius in Baja California Sur, Mexico, was from June to December. The spawning period was recorded at summer temperature (25-30°C) and photoperiod (>13 h daylight) starting in September. High GSI values (gonad development), low HSI values (lipid reserve mobilization), low IPF, and low K ratio were related to elevated temperatures. Moreover, variations were observed in protein, total lipid, triglycerides, and glycogen content in muscle, liver, and gonad according to the reproductive phase. A positive correlation was demonstrated between protein contents in muscle, gonad, and K, with lower concentrations during RP, while liver protein composition showed an opposite pattern. Lipids were mainly present in the liver, and the concentration decreased during RP while muscle increased. The results obtained in this study show differences in the proximate analyses in the liver, muscle, and gonads throughout the year concerning different phases of the reproductive cycle, indicating a great dependence of this process on the mobilization of reserves during C. medius reproduction. Building decarbonization strategy with Distributed renewable energy sources (DRES) is applied and extended worldwide for its climate change mitigation benefits, however, it generates debate regarding equity in sharing electric system operation costs. To analyze DRES effects on equity, it is conducted a case study, in which same residential consumer is evaluated in three different markets (Spain, Mexico, Colombia). We analyze not only electrical system technical variables, but we also include society's economic, social, technological, and environmental characteristics. Next, energy, economic, and environmental benefits are obtained in each the three case studies, analyzing the impact of using DERS on equity to recover electric system operating costs. We also evaluate whether tariff mechanisms are equitable to motivate all consumers participation, as well as whether all consumers have equal opportunity for using DERS. We conclude that tariff mechanisms in Mexico and Colombia lead to inequity to recover market operating costs, favoring large consumers with high incomes. Furthermore, tariff mechanisms discourage the use of DERS by small and medium consumers due to economic, social, and technological aspects. Background: The Trypanosoma cruzi parasite is the causal agent of Chagas disease, recognized by the World Health Organization as a neglected tropical disease. Currently there are seven discrete typing units (DTUs) of T. cruzi distributed in America, but there are still gaps about its distribution in some endemic regions. Materials and Methods: Seventeen units isolated from Chiapas and Oaxaca in Mexico were identified by amplification of the C-5 sterol desaturase gene. Results: Three DTUs of T. cruzi, TcI (6), TcII (10), and TcIV (1) were detected by comparing polymorphic sites in specific regions. Conclusions: New DTUs are reported for both states, where TcII was the most common DTU. The genetic characterization of the isolates can help to understand the epidemiology of Chagas disease. Merida is the capital and most inhabited city of Yucatan, Mexico, and like many other cities, it suffered drastic landscape transformations during the Covid-19 pandemic. Urban parks, the focus of this article, are of particular socioenvironmental importance and show some of these impacts. Using a strategic transdisciplinary perspective that facilitates the understanding of the complex socioenvironmental influences transforming urban parks, this study contributes to the theory and methods used to research parks by introducing the landscape of historical ecology as a conceptual framework. The results demonstrate that physical elements in the built environment can serve a peripheral role relative to park space usage and that a dichotomy exists between "green" and "gray" areas in parks' design planning. We also find that the Covid-19 pandemic intensified the gulf separating users' preferences and desire for organic elements from the anemic "green-areas" offered in Merida's public spaces. Significantly, the decisions behind the landscape transformation in these spaces was based on political expediency and consultation with architectural specialists but without input from park users. This research strives to inspire future research to integrate a holistic landscape perspective into urban research, observing the built environment's dynamic transformations with a critical mindset and allowing the social construction of space inside urban parks. The Metropolitan Zone of Mexico Valley (MZMV) in Central Mexico includes the states of Hidalgo, Mexico City, and Mexico. The MZMV is the third most populated area in the OECD. The area is free of vector-borne diseases, and information on vector mosquitoes in the MZMV area in the State of Mexico has not been reported. This study reports mosquito species in the MZMV-State of Mexico from 8 years of larval collection and ovitraps. Species collected in areas not in the MZMV of the State of Mexico are also reported. In the MZMV-State of Mexico, 11,484 mosquitoes from eight species were identified: Ae. aegypti (L.), Ae. albopictus (Skuse), Ae. epactius (Dyar and Knab), Cx. quinquefasciatus (Say), Cx. stigmatosoma (Dyar), Cx. salinarius (Coquillett), Cx. tarsalis (Coquillett) and Cs. particeps (Adams). In non-MZMV areas, 11 species were recorded; Ae. aegypti was most abundant and distributed and Ae. albopictus was at two municipalities. Reported organisms included mosquito vectors of arbovirus, suggesting potential transmission and outbreaks in the MZMV and other areas of the State of Mexico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The biological control of weeds requires the successful introduction and establishment of natural enemies into other regions, to reduce population densities of target species. Potential biocontrol agents are sought in the native region of target weed and should be highly specialized. The gall‐inducing fly Eutreta xanthochaeta Aldrich (Diptera: Tephritidae) is native to Mexico and has been brought into other regions of the world – such as Hawaii (USA), South Africa, and Australia – for the biological control of Lantana camara L. (Verbanaceae), although this not always proved to be successful. Here we investigate the trophic interactions of this fly species with two host plants inhabiting in sympatry, L. camara and Lippia myriocephala Schltdl. & Cham. (Verbenaceae), evaluating its preference through infestation rates, the gall distribution in the plant architecture, as well as the indirect impact upon production of inflorescences affecting the reproductive capacity of the plants. We found that the fly was not monophagous in its native range, and under natural conditions it preferred the wild host L. myriocephala in the presence of L. camara. Moreover, we found that gall formation was linked to changes in the host architecture along with the potential for reproduction, leading to increased terminal buds and a reduction in the inflorescences produced on the twigs where galls develop. Lantana camara consists of both horticultural hybrids and wild varieties resulting in unresolved taxonomic ambiguities. Hence, there may be adaptive limitations of this fly to distinct geographic races or climatic conditions in the various regions, which needs further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Olive ridleys (Lepidochelys olivacea) are the most common sea turtle found in the Gulf of California. Unfortunately, the bacterial flora of nesting olive ridley turtles is still unknown. We conducted a study to identify, characterize, serotype, and determine the antibiotic resistance of potentially pathogenic bacteria isolated from olive ridley turtles nesting in northwestern Mexico. Bacteria were isolated and identified from the oral cavity and cloaca of 47 postnesting turtles. Escherichia coli and Vibrio parahaemolyticus were characterized, and antibiotic resistance testing was performed. One hundred bacteria belonging to 21 species were isolated, 53 from the oral cavity and 47 from the cloaca, the most prevalent being Pseudomonas aeruginosa, followed by Aeromonas hydrophila, Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and E. coli, among others. Moreover, two to three different bacterial species were found co-colonizing both anatomical sites in some turtles. E. coli phylogroups B1, A, F, and unknown were identified as diarrheagenic E. coli (enteroaggregative and enteropathogenic E. coli). O1, O4, K8, K12, OUT, and KUT of V. parahaemolyticus serogroups were identified, also comprising pathogenic and nonpathogenic strains. Finally, 100% of the bacterial species tested were antibiotic resistant, and both MDR and XDR strains were found. In conclusion, olive ridley turtles are colonized by a diversity of bacterial species with a high rate of antibiotic resistance, some with pathogenic potential to turtles, representing a health risk factor for the species. The destructive and empirical methods commonly used to estimate carbon pools in forests managed timber are time-consuming, expensive and unfeasible at a large scale; satellite images allow evaluations at different scales, reducing time and costs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the tree biomass (TB) and carbon content (CC) through satellite images derived from Sentinel 2 in underutilized stands in southern Mexico. In 2022, 12 circular sites of 400m2 with four silvicultural treatments (STs) were established in a targeted manner: 1st thinning (T1), free thinning (FT), regeneration cut (RC) and unmanaged area (UA). A tree inventory was carried out, and samples were obtained to determine their TB based on specific gravity and CC through the Walkey and Black method. The satellite image of the study area was downloaded from Sentinel 2 to fit a simple linear model as a function of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (10 m pixel-1) showing significance (p≤0:01) and a adjusted R² = 0.92. Subsequently, the TB and CC (t ha-1) were estimated for each ST and managed area. The total managed area (3,201 ha-1) had 126 t TB ha-1 and 57 t C ha-1. Of the areas with STs, the area with FT showed the highest accumulation of TB (140 t ha-1) and C (63 t ha-1) without showing differences (p>0:05) with respect to those of the UA, which presented 129 t TB ha-1 and 58 t C ha-1. The satellite images from Sentinel 2 provide reliable estimates of the amounts of TB and CC in the managed stands. Therefore, it can be concluded that an adequate application of STs maintains a balance in the accumulation of tree C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Triatomine bugs are natural vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, which causes Chagas disease or American trypanosomiasis. The role of sylvatic triatomine species as vectors of T. cruzi in Mexico remains to be fully understood. Our research on the epidemiology of Chagas disease in Southeastern Mexico involved sampling triatomines in rural settings. Materials and Methods: A triatomine was collected in a peridomestic environment of a rural dwelling in the state of Chiapas. The triatomine was identified morphologically as an adult female Eratyrus cuspidatus Stal. Results: Microscopic analysis revealed flagellate forms of T. cruzi in the feces of the E. cuspidatus collected. This was confirmed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Amplification of the mini-exon gene showed that the T. cruzi infecting E. cuspidatus corresponded to lineage I. Conclusions: This is the first report from Mexico of E. cuspidatus found infected in a human dwelling, which represents an important adaptation process to inhabit human environments. The topic of acid-base chemistry is one of the oldest in general chemistry courses and it has been almost continuously in academic discussion. The central purpose of documenting the knowledge and beliefs of a group of ten Mexican teachers with experience in teaching acid-base chemistry in high school was to know how they design, prepare and organize their classes inside and outside the classroom, from which a set of teaching-learning sequences will be developed, essentially to train new teachers. We decided to document Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), by means of two methodological tools from Loughran, Mulhall and Berry: Content Representation (CoRe), and Pedagogical and Professional experience Repertoire (PaP-eR). In this article, we relate only the first of these tools. It was also important to document concepts, skills and attitudes, so we have made the analysis based on these three items. The main finding was to construct a Canonical PCK including the central concepts of pH and strength in the topic of acid-base chemistry from the main phrases included in the Content Representation answered by those outstanding Mexican teachers. We chose the topic of "acid-base chemistry" because there are numerous examples of its importance related to sustainability (among them acid rain or acidification of oceans), everyday issues (including stomach acidity, antacids, health troubles with the pH of blood and urine), or problems with the longevity of books related to the acidity of paper. Also, it is of fundamental importance because the students often present many alternative conceptions about it.

In this study, a new species of whitefly Aleuropleurocelus tecomastans Sanchez-Flores and Carapia-Ruiz sp. nov. was found in the municipality of Acapulco State of Guerrero, Mexico on the underside of Tecoma stans (L.) leaves. Using a general method of moments (GMM) aggregate production function adjusted for spatial autocorrelation, Russian regions 2001–2019 are found to exhibit no β convergence/divergence before 2009, 1% convergence 2009–2014 and then none again 2015–2019. Both human and physical capital contribute to aggregate growth as neoclassical theory predicts. Spatial autocorrelation suggests the measurement of spatial regional interdependence in Russia is more complex than in the U.S., EU or Mexico with the standard use of adjacent borders or railroad distances data not capturing regional interdependency. At the beginning of 2020, Russia's regions had not transitioned to intensive instead of extensive growth making regional growth stagnation and no further convergence likely in the decade to come. Biofilms as living microorganism communities are found anywhere, and for the healthcare sector, these constitute a threat and allied mechanism for health-associated or nosocomial infections. This review states the basis of biofilms and their formation. It focuses on their relevance for the biomedical sector, generalities, and the major advances in modified or new synthesized materials to prevent or control biofilm formation in biomedicine. Biofilm is conceptualized as an aggregate of cells highly communicated in an extracellular matrix, which the formation obeys to molecular and genetic basis. The biofilm offers protection to microorganisms from unfavorable environmental conditions. The most frequent genera of microorganisms forming biofilms and reported in infections are Staphylococcus spp., Escherichia spp., and Candida spp. in implants, heart valves, catheters, medical devices, and prostheses. During the last decade, biofilms have been most commonly related to health-associated infections and deaths in Europe, the United States, and Mexico. Smart, functional polymers are materials capable of responding to diverse stimuli. These represent a strategy to fight against biofilms through the modification or synthesis of new materials. Polypropylene and poly-N-isopropyl acrylamide were used enough in the literature analysis performed. Even smart polymers serve as delivery systems for other substances, such as antibiotics, for biofilm control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Taxonomic and functional diversity metrics have been used together to describe functional patterns through species richness in a given area or region. Many scientists have shown that these two metrics can be positively correlated; nevertheless, other studies have found the opposite. In either case, the usefulness of both metrics has helped to develop more reasoned conservation strategies in areas where biodiversity loss is occurring at an accelerated rate. In this study, we calculated metrics of both taxonomic and functional diversity in amphibian and reptile communities located in a variety of vegetation types (xeric scrub, pine forest, pine-oak forest, cloud forest, oak forest, and tropical dry forest) in the state of Durango. Using species richness (157 species: 36 amphibians and 121 reptiles) for the state of Durango, we found that the amphibian communities present in pine forest and pine-oak forest showed high values of taxonomic diversity (high Delta + values), meaning that the communities in these vegetation types are composed of a complex network of families and genera. The same result was true of reptiles present in oak forest, tropical dry forest, and xeric scrub. The communities formed by the snakes showed high values of functional richness, functional evenness, and functional dispersion in all vegetation types, as did the lizard communities present in xeric scrub. This indicates that the ecological functions of lizards and snakes (i.e., predators; pest controllers; links in the trophic chain) are an integral element of the functioning of these ecosystems. These results showed that vegetation types with greater taxonomic and functional diversity in amphibians and reptiles are sites that promote the sustainability of an ecosystem in particular ways, making them more suitable for conservation of these vertebrates. The information from this study can be useful in developing protection programs and implementing conservation strategies for several biological groups in particular areas of Durango and the Sierra Madre Occidental, helping to ensure the permanence of the remarkable biota of northern Mexico. Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) have biological relevance as vectors of several pathogens. To ensure periodic entomological monitoring it is necessary to have efficient and accurate tools for an adequate taxonomic identification. There are only few studies on phylogenetic analyses of phlebotomine sand flies from Neotropics, based mostly on morphological and/or molecular data, which makes the delimitation of intra- and interspecific variability of species challenging. Here we generated new molecular information on sand fly species distributed in endemic areas of leishmaniasis in Mexico, using mitochondrial and ribosomal genes, and incorporating morphological information available. Specifically, we established their phylogenetic relationships, and estimated their divergence time. Our study provides molecular information for 15 phlebotomine sand fly species from different areas of Mexico, contributing to the genetic inventory and phylogenetic relations among Neotropical species of the subfamily Phlebotominae. Mitochondrial genes proved to be suitable markers for the molecular identification of phlebotomine sand flies. However, the incorporation of additional nuclear gene information could increase the significance of phylogenetic inferences. A new species of whitefly, Aleuroglandulus avilai Carapia-Ruiz n. sp., found in La Muralla, Putla, Guerrero, México on the underside of Justicia salicifolia Blume leaves, was described. Microphotographs of morphological structures of puparia and a key to species of the genus Aleuroglandulus from Mexico were provided. Taxonomic differentiation with related species was discussed. The growth in our knowledge of the diversity of the herpetofauna of Mexico has occurred over the period of approximately 445 years from the work of Francisco Hernández to that of a broad multinational array of present-day herpetologists. The work of this huge group of people has established Mexico as one of the most significant centers of herpetofaunal biodiversity in the world. This status is the result of a complex orography, in addition to diverse habitats and environments and the biogeographic history of Mexico. The current herpetofauna consists of 1,421 native and introduced species, allocated to 220 genera, and 61 families. This figure is comprised of 1,405 native species and 16 non-native species (as of April 2023). The non-native species include two anurans, 13 squamates, and one turtle. The level of endemism is very high, presently lying at 63%, with this level expected to increase with time. Species richness varies among the 32 federal entities in the country, from a low of 50 in Tlaxcala to a high of 492 in Oaxaca. Amphibian species richness by state-level can be envisioned as comprising three levels of low, medium, and high, with the lowest levels occurring in the Peninsula of Baja California, a group of seven states in north-central and central Mexico, and a group of three states in the Yucatan Peninsula, with the highest levels occupying the southern states of Guerrero, Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, and the medium level in the remaining states of the country. Reptile species richness also can be allocated to three categories, with the lowest level occupying Baja California Sur, a group of central states, and the states of the Yucatan Peninsula, and the highest level found in a cluster of the states of Veracruz, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. Lake Texcoco in Mexico is a remarkable place for observing how human and natural relationships evolve through time in a landscape. Since the opening of the watershed and the draining of the lake, there have been various attempts to exploit the area, although few have succeeded. This study highlights the importance of historical analysis in identifying socio-natural processes that have historically influenced lake use, degradation, management, and conservation. The novelty of this study lies in its application of a historical political ecology approach to understand the evolving dynamics between power relations and the ecology of the former Lake Texcoco in Mexico Valley. By examining both the ecological and political-economic history of the lake, this study reveals how conflicts related to natural resource management in the past have influenced the ecological dynamics of the present. Overall, this study presents a unique perspective on the socio-natural history of Lake Texcoco, demonstrating the potential of using historical political ecology to understand the long-term effects of environmental change. This paper explores the convergence hypothesis of Mexican states with the national level and with one another from 1940 to 2015. Interpreting convergence as catching‐up, we also capture other types of regular evolution, namely, invariance of the income gap over time, permanent absence of the gap, and steadily increasing gap (deterministic divergence). As a tool of econometric analysis, we use a novel model that describes convergence by asymptotically decaying trends and covers other types of evolution as particular cases. The results obtained suggest one or other type of regularity to be peculiar to roughly ca. 40% of income gaps both with the national level and between states. However, convergence is observed only in 6% to 15% of cases. Regarding convergence at the national level, an additional analysis by three 50‐year subperiod shows that in many cases the type of evolution changes for the same state from one subperiod to another. Analyzing convergence between states, we find that convergence between neighboring states is more frequent than between other states; however, the effect of the neighborhood is not too strong. Objective: In tropical, subtropical and arid zones, heat stress is the main cause of productivity reduction in cattle. When climate stressors occur, animals become thermal adapted through differential expression of some genes, including heat shock proteins (HSP) family. The aim of this study was to determine levels of expression of HSP60, HSP70, and HSP90 genes in Simmental cattle raised in tropical environments of Mexico. Methods: In this study, expression of HSP60, HSP70, and HSP90 genes was analyzed in 116 Simmental cattle from three farms with tropical climate located in western Mexico. Animals were sampled twice a day, in the morning and noon. Gene expression was evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction using probes marked with fluorescence. The MIXED procedure of SAS with repeated measures was used for all statistical analysis. Results: HSP60 gene expression differences were found for sex (p = 0.0349). HSP70 gene differences were detected for sampling hour (p = 0.0042), farm (p<0.0001), sex (p = 0.0476), and the interaction sampling hour×farm (p = 0.0002). Gene expression differences for HSP90 were observed for farm (p<0.0001) and year (p = 0.0521). HSP70 gene showed to be a better marker of heat stress than HSP60 and HSP90 genes. Conclusion: Expression of HSP70 gene in Simmental herds of the tropical region of western México was different during early morning and noon, but the expression of the HSP60 and HSP90 genes was similar. This study aims to identify the effect of board diversity on environmental policy in Latin American companies. This research focuses on 11 industrial sectors in Brazil, Mexico, and Chile that took into consideration a broader extension of environmental policy, involving practices regarding resource use, emissions reduction, and innovation. Drawing on corporate governance (CG) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) relationships, a regression analysis was conducted with 1214 firm‐year observations from 181 companies. Our results indicate that the predominantly weak CG in Latin America might favour the use of manipulative environmental policy decisions. Board diversity does not have a relevant influence on CSR activities, as environmental issues are only taken into account so far as the cost of natural resources, while issues such as environmental innovation and reducing emission are not part of the agenda. In Brazil and Chile, independent directors have no significant effect on environmental policy decisions, while in Mexico, a less independent board grants managers greater discretion to establish an environmental policy, whereas in all three countries, board gender diversity has no significant effect. The theoretical insights drawn from this study reinforce that board composition, as an internal CG mechanism, is insufficient to overcome the institutional voids and give protagonist to sustainability issues in Latin America, reiterating the need for more robust CG mechanisms to coerce CSR. This research studied the performance of tin titanate (SnTiO3, SnT) and cellulose-based composites for the removal of clonazepam (CZP) drug by physical adsorption. The cellulose was extracted from a plant named tithonia tubaeformis, which is considered as weed in the crop fields of Mexico. The analysis by microscopy revealed that the SnTiO3 powders are formed by a mixture of coalesced grains and nanotubes with lengths in the range of 97–633 nm. Furthermore, the X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the SnT powders present a mixture of cassiterite and rutile phases. Experiments for the CZP removal from drinking water were carried out, and several parameters such as initial drug concentration (1–10 mg/L), amount of SnT adsorbent per liter of contaminated solution (10–50 mg/L), and pH (3–10) were varied in order to study their influence on the CZP removal percentage. Essentially, we found that the SnT dosage of 50 mg/L produced the most efficient and fastest CZP removal, since 94.3% of CZP was removed after only 10 min of reaction. Moreover, a piece of cellulose (Cell) was decorated with 50 mg of SnT powder to form the Cell+SnT composite, and this was able to remove a maximum of 80.5% of CZP after 180 min of reaction. If the amount of SnT powder deposited on the Cell+SnT composite is raised up to 100 mg, the composite can remove 95.5% of CZP. The adsorption capacity was also calculated for the SnT powders and Cell+SnT composite and found that it was 6.3 times higher for the SnT powders. Furthermore, the Raman spectra recorded for the Cell+SnT composites demonstrated the presence of surface defects, which acted as adsorption centers for the CZP molecules. The results of this investigation demonstrate that eco-friendly and low-cost floatable composites can be used for the removal of pharmaceutical contaminants, which is an advantage over adsorbent powders. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the preventive services for cervical cancer (CC) control programs in Mexico, which will result in increased mortality. This study aims to assess the impact of the pandemic on the interruption of three preventive actions in the CC prevention program in Mexico. Methods: This study is a retrospective time series analysis based on administrative records for the uninsured population served by the Mexican Ministry of Health. Patient data were retrieved from the outpatient service information system and the hospital discharge database for the period 2017-2021. Data were aggregated by month, distinguishing a pre-pandemic and a pandemic period, considering April 2020 as the start date of the pandemic. A Poisson time series analysis was used to model seasonal and secular trends. Five process indicators were selected to assess the disruption of the CC program, these were analyzed as monthly data (N=39 pre-pandemic, N=21 during the pandemic). HPV vaccination indicators (number of doses and coverage) and diagnostic characteristics of CC cases were analyzed descriptively. The time elapsed between diagnosis and treatment initiation in CC cases was modeled using restricted cubic splines from robust regression. Results: Annual HPV vaccination coverage declined dramatically after 2019 and was almost null in 2021. The number of positive Papanicolaou smears decreased by 67.8% (90%CI: -72.3, -61.7) in April-December 2020, compared to their expected values without the pandemic. The immediate pandemic shock (April 2020) in the number of first-time and recurrent colposcopies was -80.5% (95% CI:-83.5, -77.0) and -77.9% (95%CI: -81.0, -74.4), respectively. An increasing trend was observed in the proportion of advanced stage and metastatic CC cases. The fraction of CC cases that did not receive medical treatment or surgery increased, as well as CC cases that received late treatment after diagnosis. Conclusions: Our analyses show significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic with declines at all levels of CC prevention and increasing inequalities. The restarting of the preventive programs against CC in Mexico offers an opportunity to put in place actions to reduce the disparities in the burden of disease between socioeconomic levels. Introduction: The steep population decline of the emblematic monarch butterfly is caused mainly by the reduction of food sources for caterpillars and adults, as well as disturbance in its overwintering forests. Although feeding at the overwintering sites in Mexico has long been considered unimportant, observations show that butterflies feed inside and outside of their forests on sunny days. Nectaring close to the hibernation colonies may be relevant for their conservation, as their reserves decline faster in disturbed forests. However, there are no systematic studies on nectar sources in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, Michoacán, Mexico. Aims: In this study, we identified and quantified the main plant species visited by butterflies for nectaring in the Reserve. Methods: We collected systematic observational data on the flora and butterfly visits in three sanctuaries, around colonies formed between February and March of the 2019–2020 season. Results: Butterflies fed on 29 plant species from 10 families. Most had white, yellow or blue flowers, were somewhat synanthropic and had their main flowering season in winter. The most visited species were Salvia mexicana and S. plurispicata, which were also the most abundant. By individual plant, Prunus serotina, Crataegus mexicana, Buddleja sessiliflora, Verbesina oncophora and Roldana albonervia were the most visited. Discussion/Implications for insect conservation: The results point to possible interventions in support of the butterflies. The visited species are generally easy to encourage or cultivate and could be promoted in the surrounding agricultural areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Mexico ranks fifth worldwide in the number of deaths due to COVID-19. Identifying risk markers through easily accessible clinical data could help in the initial triage of COVID-19 patients and anticipate a fatal outcome, especially in the most socioeconomically disadvantaged regions. This study aims to identify markers that increase lethality risk in patients diagnosed with COVID-19, based on machine learning (ML) methods. Markers were differentiated by sex and age-group. Methods: A total of 11,564 cases of COVID-19 in Mexico were extracted from the Epidemiological Surveillance System for Viral Respiratory Disease. Four ML classification methods were trained to predict lethality, and an interpretability approach was used to identify those markers. Results: Models based on Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) yielded the best performance in a test set. This model achieved a sensitivity of 0.91, a specificity of 0.69, a positive predictive value of 0.344, and a negative predictive value of 0.965. For female patients, the leading markers are diabetes and arthralgia. For males, the main markers are chronic kidney disease (CKD) and chest pain. Dyspnea, hypertension, and polypnea increased the risk of death in both sexes. Conclusions: ML-based models using an interpretability approach successfully identified risk markers for lethality by sex and age. Our results indicate that age is the strongest demographic factor for a fatal outcome, while all other markers were consistent with previous clinical trials conducted in a Mexican population. This article studies the role played by anthropologist Roger Bartra in the introduction to Mexico in the 1960s of Karl Marx’s hitherto virtually unknown text Formen, or Precapitalist Economic Forms, and specifically of one of the concepts presented therein: the Asiatic mode of production (AMP). To this end, the history of the early Mexican reception of the Formen is reconstructed and the importance of the concept of AMP for the development of a Marxism that recognizes the diversity of historical developments is explained. It also analyzes Roger Bartra’s use of the AMP to examine ancient American societies and his role as editor in disseminating this concept and the Formen in the Mexican intellectual field. High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the main risk factor for cervical cancer (CC) development, where the continuous expression of E6 and E7 oncoproteins maintain the malignant phenotype. In Mexico, around 70% of CC cases are diagnosed in advanced stages, impacting the survival of patients. The aim of this work was to identify biomarkers affected by HPV-16 E6 and E7 oncoproteins that impact the prognosis of CC patients. Expression profiles dependent on E6 and E7 oncoproteins, as well as their relationship with biological processes and cellular signaling pathways, were analyzed in CC cells. A comparison among expression profiles of E6- and E7-expressing cells and that from a CC cohort obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) demonstrated that the expression of 13 genes impacts the overall survival (OS). A multivariate analysis revealed that the downregulated expression of RIPOR2 was strongly associated with a worse OS. RIPOR2, including its transcriptional variants, were overwhelmingly depleted in E6- and E7-expressing cells. Finally, in a Mexican cohort, it was found that in premalignant cervical lesions, RIPOR2 expression decreases as the lesions progress; meanwhile, decreased RIPOR2 expression was also associated with a worse OS in CC patients. This study reports the capture of a partial albino scalloped hammerhead Sphyrna lewini in Puerto Madero, Chiapas, Mexico. The specimen was a neonate female that measured 491 mm total length and had a total weight of 800 g. This is the first report of an albino scalloped hammerhead Sphyrna lewini in the Pacific Ocean and the second in the world. The presence of albinism could be the result of multifactorial events, although anthropogenic stressors such as excessive fishing pressure and marine pollution might be involved. Tar spot complex (TSC) is a major fungal disease of maize in Mexico and several Central and South American countries. The causal agents of the disease are Phyllachora maydis and Monographella maydis. Yield losses of up to 58% associated with this disease have been reported previously. The majority of commercial maize germplasm in the United States is considered highly susceptible to TSC. In order to accelerate the disease resistance improvement process, genes for resistance to TSC and molecular markers linked to these genes, need to be identified and characterized. Here, we used an association mapping technique to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for TSC resistance using genome‐wide association study (GWAS)‐based genotyping‐by‐sequencing (GBS) and Diversity Arrays Technology Sequencing (DArTseq) single‐nucleotide polymorphisms. An association mapping panel of 228 CIMMYT maize lines was used for the GWAS. One major QTL explaining 27.66% of the phenotypic variance and four minor QTLs explaining 10.18%, 12.72%, 10.14% and 13.38% of the phenotypic variance, respectively, were identified by the GBS‐based association mapping. Two QTLs were identified by DArTseq‐based association mapping explaining 1.07% and 18.29% of the phenotypic variance, respectively. The COVID-19 pandemic generated a new challenge of our time with different scenarios. For this reason, this work aimed to identify changes in the diet and lifestyle of Mexicans during the COVID-19 lockdown. This study was based on a Google online survey, which contained questions about eating habits, physical activity, and sleep behavior before and during the COVID-19 lockdown. It was conducted from 2 June to 4 July 2020 and included 1004 participants (698 women and 306 men 18 years old and above). The subjects reported the increased frequency of consumption of meat, vegetables, fruits, eggs, legumes, fast food, and alcoholic drinks during the lockdown. Furthermore, subjects reported sleeping more hours than usual and negative changes in sleep quality (insomnia, nightmares, and leg pain or cramps). There was a reduction in practicing 30 min of intense physical activity during the week. On the other hand, there was an increase in the number of hours spent in front of the screen. Participants over 36 years of age performed less physical activity during the COVID-19 lockdown. These results indicated that it is vital to develop national strategies to promote healthy lifestyle habits in the population during pandemic lockdown measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Symptomatic irreversible pulpitis is a common dental disease for which root canal treatment (RCT) has been the standard treatment. However, in many countries, RCT is considered a high-cost treatment that is not covered by public healthcare services; this forces patients to have dental extraction as their only option to relieve pain. In the last decade, several investigations have provided evidence that an alternative treatment known as full pulpotomy (FP) could be an alternative for patients who could not afford the cost of an RCT. Nevertheless, evidence is lacking on the success rate that could be obtained if it is performed in a public dental care clinic (PDCC). The present investigation has two main objectives. To be the first approach of a multicentric feasibility study to find out whether an FP performed by a general practice dentist (GPD) in a PDCC could be suitable and establish its success rate and patient satisfaction. Patients attending a PDCC with symptoms of irreversible pulpitis were invited to participate. FP was performed and followed up at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. The treatment success was assessed by combining three variables, patient satisfaction, clinical, and radiographic outcomes. Forty-one patients from 17 to 78 years old received the intervention. In total, 97.5% were completely satisfied with the treatment and were considered successful since none of the clinical or radiographic variables were present in any of the follow-ups. An FP performed by a GPD in a PDCC could be suitable as a routine treatment for symptomatic irreversible pulpitis due to the excellent success rate and patient satisfaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work proposes two optimization models for the optimal management (generation, conversion and distribution) of electricity in a macroscopic system divided into geographical regions; the resulting model is applied to the national system for the distribution of electricity in Mexico. The formulations are based on the concept of an energy hub. The first model is a linear programming model which represents the operation of the system during one hour. It provides the optimal decisions to satisfy demands at minimum cost. Such a basic model is then extended into a mixed-integer linear multiperiod model (MILP) which is applied to a 24-hour scenario. Further, the MILP multiperiod model also considers the interactions among transmission regions existing in each of the geographical regions. In particular, this last model considers the regions of the National Transmission Network in Mexico as well as the available storage and the electricity generation facilities owned by the private sector. The MILP model consists of 21,773 constraints; its optimal results suggest that power plants operating with combined cycle contribute with 50 % of the power generation; hydroelectric power plants contribute with approximately 18 %. The current practical goal of 30 % of renewable energy generation can be achieved through the installed capacity. The species Aeromonas lusitana was first described in 2016 with five strains recovered from untreated water and vegetables from Portugal. Since then, no further records exist of this species. During a surveillance study on the presence of Aeromonas in fish farms in Mexico, a new strain (ESV-351) of the mentioned species isolated from a rainbow trout was recovered. It was identified because it clustered phylogenetically with the type strain of A. lusitana based on the analysis of the rpoD gene sequences. In the present study, phenotypic characteristics, antimicrobial resistance profiles, and the presence of putative virulence genes of this novel strain (ESV-351) were determined in parallel to the five isolates from the original species description. Phenotypic differential characteristics exhibited by A. lusitana ESV-351 depicted an evident similarity to the characteristics exhibited by the other evaluated strains. However, the novel strain was positive for the production of indole using conventional methods, while the rest of the strains, including the type strain, were negative for its production. Furthermore, intermediate resistance to ampicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and cephalothin was detected in both the novel and the type strain. Five different virulence-related genes were detected in the novel strain and in the previously described strains, with the type strain exhibiting the highest number of virulence-related genes. In addition to this, the genome of the novel strain (ESV-351) was sequenced and compared with the genomes from the type strain (A. lusitana CECT 7828T) and other Aeromonas spp. The genomic analysis defined Aeromonas tecta as the closest species to A. lusitana with a highly similar number of predicted proteins. The genomic size, the number of protein-encoding genes and the number of different tRNAs, among other characteristics, make it possible to propose that the ESV-351 strain could potentially have the capacity to adapt to different environments. Genome comparison of the ESV-351 strain with the type strain revealed that both possess a similar sequence of the citrate synthase gene. In addition to this finding, the chromosomal region containing the citrate synthase locus of the novel strain exhibits some similarity to the chromosomal region in the genome of the A. hydrophila type strain and other known human pathogens, such as Vibrio cholerae.
