This study was conducted from a perspective that adopts a broad vision of mathematical talent, defined as the potential that a subject manifests when confronting certain types of tasks, in a successful way, that generate creative mathematical activity. To analyse this, our study proposes a Praxeological Model of Mathematical Talent based on the Anthropological Theory of Didactics and the notion of mathematical creativity, which defines four technological functions: (1) producing new techniques; (2) optimizing those techniques (3); considering tasks from diverse angles; and (4) adapting techniques. Using this model, this study analyses the creative mathematical activity of students aged 10-12 years displayed as they sought to solve a series of infinite succession tasks proposed to encourage the construction of generalization processes. The setting is a Mathematics Club (a talent-promoting institution). The evaluation of results shows that the Praxeological Model of Mathematical Talent allows the emergence and analysis of mathematical creativity and, therefore, encourages the development of mathematical talent.

HIV infection results in marked alterations in the gut microbiota (GM), such as the loss of microbial diversity and different taxonomic and metabolic profiles. Despite antiretroviral therapy (ART) partially ablating gastrointestinal alterations, the taxonomic profile after successful new ART has shown wide variations. Our objective was to determine the GM composition and functions in people living with HIV (PLWHIV) under ART in comparison to seronegative controls (SC). Fecal samples from 21 subjects (treated with integrase strand-transfer inhibitors, INSTIs) and 18 SC were included. We employed 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, coupled with PICRUSt2 and fecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) quantification by gas chromatography. The INSTI group showed a decreased α-diversity (p < 0.001) compared to the SC group, at the expense of increased amounts of Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Segatella copri, Lactobacillus, and Gram-negative bacteria. Concurrently, we observed an enrichment in Megasphaera and Butyricicoccus, both SCFA-producing bacteria, and significant elevations in fecal butyrate in this group (p < 0.001). Interestingly, gut dysbiosis in PLWHIV was characterized by a proinflammatory environment orchestrated by Pseudomonadota and elevated levels of butyrate associated with bacterial metabolic pathways, as well as the evident presence of butyrogenic bacteria. The role of this unique GM in PLWHIV should be evaluated, as well as the use of butyrate-based supplements and ART regimens that contain succinate, such as tenofovir disoproxil succinate. The text analyzes school practices based on territory, Indigenous knowledge and communal life carried out by teachers, students and elders in Indigenous schools in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Based on ethnographic data from 2014 and 2022 in Indigenous middle schools at the North Sierra of Oaxaca is presented the centrality of territory, relationality, respect and reciprocity in school life; mainly through walks through the community, drawings and texts created by the students and interviews with elders. The intention is to discuss the possibilities of land-based education as a way of perpetuating communal knowledge of territory as a form of Indigenous peoples' resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vulnerability is a concept associated with the effects of social inequities to access health care services. On a hospital level, vulnerable populations must be identified and favored over others. The aims of this study were the analysis of the conceptions and practices of social workers regarding vulnerable patients, and the identification of theoretical elements of vulnerability given by academics. Hospital ethnography and a focus group were implemented. Social workers related vulnerability to the social needs of each patient; however, they state that they have dilemmas to identify a person in a vulnerable condition; these dilemmas are related to social differences and deservingness. Academics indicated that the vulnerability should refer to the lack of access to health services offered by the institution. Academics agree with social workers regarding the importance of considering the overlapped social and individual circumstances in each patient to recognize their vulnerable condition, regardless of belonging to any of the pre-established vulnerable groups. Finally, taking into account the way of conceptualizing vulnerability and how public policy on the identification of vulnerable patients in the hospital has been implemented, these two elements are explained using the palimpsest model, which is a figure of thought that can be applied to analyze the sociocultural significance of this complex issue, as well as other social dynamics. Background: Pterin profiles or molecular analyses of hyperphenylalaninemia (HPA) caused by phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) deficiency or tetrahydrobiopterin deficiency (BH4D) are not always available in low- or middle-income countries, including Mexico, limiting information regarding the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of patients exhibiting BH4D. Objective: To report the genotypes underlying BH4D and the clinical presentation in unrelated Mexican HPA pediatric patients with normal PAH genotypes who attended a single metabolic reference center in Mexico. Methods: Automated Sanger sequencing of the PTS, QDPR, and PCBD1 genes of 14 HPA patients was performed. Predicted effects on protein structure caused by missense variants were assessed by in silico protein modeling. Results and discussion: A high prevalence of BH4D was noted in our HPA cohort (9.8%, N = 14/142). Clinically relevant biallelic genotypes were identified in the PTS (N = 7/14 patients), QDPR (N = 6/14 patients), and PCBD1 (N = 1/ 14 patients) genes. Four novel QDPR variants [c.714dup or p.(Leu239Thrfs*44), c.106-1G>T or p.(?), c.214G>T or p.(Gly72*), and c.187_189dup or p.(Gln63dup)] were identified. In silico protein modeling of six missense variants of PTS [p.(Thr67Met), p.(Glu81Ala), and p.(Tyr113Cys)], QDPR [p.(Cys161Phe) and p.(Pro172Leu)], and PCBD1 [p.(Glu97Lys)] supports their pathogenicity. Progressive neurological symptoms (mainly intellectual and motor impairment and even death in three patients) were noted in all patients with biallelic QDPR genotypes and in 5/7 patients bearing biallelic PTS genotypes. The single homozygous PCBD1 p.(Glu97Lys) patient remains asymptomatic. Conclusion: A higher proportion of BH4D (9.8 vs. 1%--2% worldwide), attributable to a heterogeneous mutational spectrum and wide clinical presentation, was noted in our Mexican HPA cohort, with the PTS-related HPA disorder being the most frequent. Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in pregnancy is associated with birth and developmental alterations in infants. In this study, clinical records of 47 infants whose mothers had Zika during pregnancy or clinical manifestations compatible with Zika were reviewed. A description of the infants' anomalies was established, and a neurodevelopmental assessment was performed on 18 infants, using the Evaluation of Infant Development (EDI for its initialism in Spanish) and DDST-II (Denver Developmental Screening Test II) tests. From his sample, 74.5% of the infants evaluated had major anomalies and 51.9% had minor anomalies. The incidence of major anomalies, related to trimester of pregnancy, was 84.2% for the first trimester, 77.8% for the second trimester, and 37.5% in the third trimester. A similar trend was observed in the frequency of infants without anomalies and was less evident in the incidence of minor anomalies (p = 0.016). Through neurodevelopmental assessments, EDI identified 27.8% of infants as having normal development, while 55.5% of affected infants had developmental delay, and 16.7% were at risk for developmental delay. The DDSST-II showed that 77.7% infants had delay in the gross motor and language area, 88.8% in the fine-adaptative motor area, and 72.2% in the personal–social area. In this work, children of mothers with ZIKV infection during pregnancy may have major or minor anomalies regardless of the trimester of pregnancy in which the infection occurred. Gut microbiota undergoes profound alterations in alcohol cirrhosis. Microbiota-derived products, e.g., short chain fatty acids (SCFA), regulate the homeostasis of the gut-liver axis. The objective was to evaluate the composition and functions of the intestinal microbiota in patients with alcohol-decompensated cirrhosis. Fecal samples of 18 patients and 18 healthy controls (HC) were obtained. Microbial composition was characterized by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, SCFA quantification was performed by gas chromatography (GC), and metagenomic predictive profiles were analyzed by PICRUSt2. Gut microbiota in the cirrhosis group revealed a significant increase in the pathogenic/pathobionts genera Escherichia/Shigella and Prevotella, a decrease in beneficial bacteria, such as Blautia, Faecalibacterium, and a decreased α-diversity (p < 0.001) compared to HC. Fecal SCFA concentrations were significantly reduced in the cirrhosis group (p < 0.001). PICRUSt2 analysis indicated a decrease in acetyl-CoA fermentation to butyrate, as well as an increase in pathways related to antibiotics resistance, and aromatic amino acid biosynthesis. These metabolic pathways have been poorly described in the progression of alcohol-related decompensated cirrhosis. The gut microbiota of these patients possesses a pathogenic/inflammatory environment; therefore, future strategies to balance intestinal dysbiosis should be implemented. Innovation Systems (IS) is a context-specific topic that still presents a challenge to emerging countries. In this perspective, the present study aims to provide a map of current publications regarding Innovation Systems in the context of Latin America. Data shows Brazil is the current leader in publications on the topic, followed by Colombia and Mexico. Innovation systems relations and sectoral innovation systems - agriculture, health, food, and education - are the main focus, while sustainability and other relevant sectors lack proper attention. Challenges and best practices in SMEs regarding its interaction with IS are also key aspects as this type of organization represents around 99% of the companies in this region. Ethnographic fieldwork, which implies the encounter with otherness, is used by medical anthropology to approach the understanding of social problems related to health, illness, care and death. The objective of the work was to carry out an ethical reflection on various conflictive situations experienced by three anthropologists during their research in Mexico, by means of the analysis of their field diaries. To this end, a group and interdisciplinary analysis was carried out from an ethical perspective. The conflicts found were classified as: 1. Ethical dilemmas (such as sincerity vs. concealment of information); 2. Ethical dissonances (such as fairness in informants' access to medical services, access and identity of the anthropologist in the field, limits of the intervention, reciprocity, and the emotions of the researcher); and 3. Others (ethical conflicts such as the observation of medical paternalism and the disciplinary differences between anthropological and medical work). This analysis allowed us to understand, through an ethical-methodological alert, the epistemological, methodological and, mainly, the ethical positions of the researchers who, surreptitiously, guide the construction of the anthropological task. Likewise, the investigation allowed us to glimpse the responsibility of the actions or inactions of the researcher vis a vis of the people observed within a context of health care. Background: Long travel times to reach essential surgical care in Chiapas, Mexico's poorest state, can delay lifesaving procedures and contribute to adverse outcomes. Geographical access to surgical facilities is 1 of the 6 indicators of the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery and has been measured extensively worldwide. Our objective is to determine the population with 2-h geographical access to facilities capable of performing the Bellwether procedures (laparotomy, cesarean delivery, and open fracture repair). This is the first study in Mexico to assess access to surgical facilities, including both the fragmented public sector and the private sector. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, conducted from June 2019 to January 2020, Bellwether capable surgical facilities from all health systems in Chiapas were geocoded and assessed through on-site data collection, Ministry of Health databases, and verified via telephone. Geospatial analyses were performed on Redivis. Results: We identified 59 Bellwether capable hospitals, with 17.5% (n = 954,460) of the state residing more than 2 h from surgical care in public and private health systems. Of those, 22 facilities had confirmed 24/7 Bellwether capability, and 23% (n = 1,178,383) of the affiliated population resided more than 2 h from these hospitals. Conclusions: Our study shows that the Ministry of Health and employment-based health coverage could provide timely access to essential surgical care for the majority of the population. However, the fragmentation of the healthcare system leaves a gap that contributes to delays in care and unmet emergency surgical needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Community school education in Oaxaca is the result of a teachers' movement and the struggle for indigenous rights in the region. In 2004, the Indigenous Community Secondary Schools (7th-9th grade of basic education) began to operate as an alternative indigenous pedagogical model. School practices are based on community participation in school life, the use of the local indigenous language, and educational work through learning projects. In the schooling process, boys and girls resume community practices based on autonomy, reciprocity and collaborative work. Based on an ethnographic study in a community and the accompaniment of more than eleven years of this indigenous educational model, the article discusses the relationship between participation in socio-cultural practices and school appropriation of indigenous children and the construction of their own voice as members of an indigenous community. In this article, we describe and analyze the identification of people as Indigenous by health-care professionals in a hospital in Mexico City. This socially constructed identification is based on a "contrasting identity" of essentialist and stereotyped categories (language, place of origin, cultural practices, and poverty) that promote the normalization of inequity, marginality, and racism. The ambivalence of the invisibility of the indigenous in the health-care context also marginalizes and generates inequity when it comes to the access to healthcare. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

More than 300 buildings were severely damaged during the 19 September 2017 earthquake (Mw = 7.1) occurred in Morelos, Mexico. One of the most common structural deficiencies detected was the use of ground level parking that produced soft-story buildings. These structures suffered severe damaged or collapsed. A field visit after the earthquake allowed to collect information about typologies of the damaged buildings and a great number of seismic ground motions. This study analyzes the seismic capacity and demands of typical existing building with a soft-story structure, based on the information collected in Mexico City, and subjecting the building to a family of real accelerograms recorded in this area during the earthquake occurrence. To enhance the seismic capacity of these structures, and to reduce their seismic vulnerability, a retrofit technique based on the addition of energy dissipation devices is analyzed. Results show the most efficient retrofit techniques and the strength and stiffness parameters required to improve the expected seismic behavior of this type of structures, and their applicability to mitigate damage in future earthquakes. The Zn-Pb-Ag(-W) skarn deposits at Zacatepec (or Mɨɨygɨxy) in Oaxaca are associated with rocks of the Sierra Madre del Sur (SMS) magmatic province, and located in its easternmost part, in southern Mexico. This region consists of Eocene to Miocene calc-alkaline hypabyssal and volcanic rocks, with intermediate to felsic compositions that intrude or overlie Cretaceous carbonate sequences. Prograde mineralization in the Zacatepec skarn deposits was dated by means of the 40Ar/39Ar method in a sample of the granitic hypabyssal body, with which the formation of these deposits is directly associated. The isochron ages thus yielded are 17.52 ± 0.14 Ma for biotite and 17.33 ± 0.40 Ma for hornblende. Such ages are in accordance with several other magmatic-hydrothermal deposits (epithermal, skarn, and porphyry-type deposits) that are hosted by Miocene rocks in central Oaxaca state. Deposits in the region with known ages for Miocene hypabyssal rocks with which they are closely related are Taviche, Lachigalla, Cobre Grande, Aurena, Natividad, Altagracia-Águila-Arista, Santa Margarita-Azucena, and Guielavazar. The plausible ages for these ore deposits determine a time bracket between < 23.8 and < 13.01 Ma (early to middle Miocene) that can be considered as favorable for the finding of magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits. The latter can be tentatively used to define a new metallogenic period that corresponds to a new metallogenic province, for which the rocks derived from the Miocene magmatism of the SMS constitute the metallotect. Although such metallogenic activity has not been altogether overlooked, no previous papers have focused on its relevance and extent in space and time. Therefore, this province constitutes the fifth Miocene mineralized region known in Mexico, besides the southernmost Sierra Madre Occidental, the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, the Gulf of California, and the alkaline province in Chiapas. In this work we estimated the budgetary impact of the samples produced by the biobank of the "Instituto Nacional de Cancerología" (BT-INCan) to set a recuperation fee from the perspective of the Health Ministry of Mexico. The study is an observational retrospective review of the direct medical costs (DMCs) of the processes involved in cryopreservation of the samples collected, on a per sample basis, including materials, laboratory tests, personnel, and administrative costs. Materials and labor costs were determined by information collected from the BT-INCan. DMCs were provided depending on the type of sample: plasma, tissue and biopsy; they were calculated according to the process required to preserve them. Sensitivity analysis was performed using bootstrap. Recuperation costs ranged from 130 to 155 USD. Costs were considered on a 5-year time frame for the maintenance per sample, which is the average time that a sample is kept in the BT-INCan. The cost analysis is perceived as an approximation to the most adequate recuperation fee per sample needed to guarantee the correct development of the BT-INCan. This work provides a basis and valuable information about costs, to enable several health institutions to strategically plan and manage a biobank or even motivate to establish their own biobank. The aim of this article was to describe and analyze the doctor–patient relationship between fibromyalgia patients and rheumatologists in public and private health care contexts within the Mexican health care system. This medical anthropological study drew on hospital ethnography and patients’ illness narratives, as well as the experiences of rheumatologists from both types of health care services. The findings show how each type of medical care subsystem shape different relationships between patients and doctors. Patient stigmatization, overt rejection, and denial of the disease’s existence were identified. In this doctor–patient-with-fibromyalgia relationship, there are difficult encounters, rather than difficult patients. These encounters are more fluid in private consultations compared with public hospitals. The doctor-centered health care model is prevalent in public institutions. In the private sector, we find the characteristics of the patient-centered model coexisting with the traditional physician-centered approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the 1930s in Colombia, artists such as Ignacio Gómez Jaramillo, took Mexican muralism as an important part of their careers thus engaging with public art for the first time in the country. In 1936, Gómez Jaramillo travelled to Mexico for two years in order to study muralism, to learn the fresco technique and to transmit the Mexican experience of the open-air-schools. Gómez Jaramillo returned to Colombia in 1938 and in 1939 painted the murals of the National Capitol. Although Gómez Jaramillo's work after 1939 is well known, his time in Mexico has been barely studied and very few scholars have analyzed the artist's work in light of his Mexican experience. While in Mexico, Gómez Jaramillo joined the LEAR (La Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios) with whom he crated the murals of the Centro Escolar Revolución. These murals depict politically engaged images that, apparently, little had to do with his more historical work back in Colombia. This text proposes a careful reading of the artist's work at the CER and a rereading of the National Capitol murals in light of a more politicized vision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been assumed that plant biomass partitioning to stems and roots at the ecosystem level follows a single strategy according to which the stem biomass scales isometrically with root biomass, a hypothesis known as 'isometric scaling'. In this study, we examined an alternative theory used for plants: plant biomass is allocated preferentially to the plant organ that harvests the limiting growth resource, a theory known as the 'balanced growth hypothesis'. Our objective was to test these two alternative hypotheses across a water availability gradient. We quantified the stem and root biomass in a seasonally dry tropical forest (SDTF) in three regions of the Yucatán peninsula along a precipitation gradient. Reduced major axis analysis showed that the slopes of the relationship between stem and root biomass across the study regions were statistically similar and significantly different from 1.0 (common slope = 2.5), which contrasts with the 'isometric scaling' hypothesis. The allometric coefficient was different between regions along the precipitation gradient, which showed that plant biomass allocation to stems is higher in high than in low water availability regions where biomass is allocated in greater proportions to roots. The stem:root ratio increases following the low to high water availability gradient. Our results showed that plant biomass allocation in the SDTF follows a simple allometric strategy in which greater plant biomass is allocated to stems irrespective of water availability, suggesting to the forest level that plant biomass allocation strategy is invariant across the water availability gradient. Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare genetic disorder caused by pathogenic variants (PV) in at least 22 genes, which cooperate in the Fanconi anemia/Breast Cancer (FA/BRCA) pathway to maintain genome stability. PV in FANCA, FANCC, and FANCG account for most cases (~90%). This study evaluated the chromosomal, molecular, and physical phenotypic findings of a novel founder FANCG PV, identified in three patients with FA from the Mixe community of Oaxaca, Mexico. All patients presented chromosomal instability and a homozygous PV, FANCG: c.511-3_511-2delCA, identified by next-generation sequencing analysis. Bioinformatic predictions suggest that this deletion disrupts a splice acceptor site promoting the exon 5 skipping. Analysis of Cytoscan 750 K arrays for haplotyping and global ancestry supported the Mexican origin and founder effect of the variant, reaffirming the high frequency of founder PV in FANCG. The degree of bone marrow failure and physical findings (described through the acronyms VACTERL-H and PHENOS) were used to depict the phenotype of the patients. Despite having a similar frequency of chromosomal aberrations and genetic constitution, the phenotype showed a wide spectrum of severity. This article explores the spontaneous and emotional dimensions of social protest and the expressive dimensions of constructing movement identities. It analyzes how a "party mood" that prevailed in a Mexico City social movement organization, the Asamblea de Barrios, created the conditions for the emergence of Superbarrio, a masked crusader for justice who used humor and drama to help the urban poor confront the corruption and mismanagement of the Mexican state. Superbarrio drew on Mexico's culture of wrestling and the wrestling audience's cognitive and emotional responses. He represented an innovation in the movement's action repertories that used the emotional dramaturgy of wrestling for framing purpose. This proved crucial in sustaining effective challenges to the authorities and led to dozens of imitators. This article argues that the public's response to strategic dramaturgy is mediated by the emotions dramatic representations of conflict arouse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nowadays, it is well established that biopsy is the gold standard for medical diagnosis of liver disease; however, recent studies have shown numerous discrepancies in biopsy assessment, even when it is evaluated by senior pathologists. Fluorescence spectroscopy is a tool that has been of utility in the diagnosis of different diseases based on biopsy analysis. Thus, fluorescence study of liver samples with five different degrees of fibrosis is presented. Paraffin-preserved human liver tissue was provided on white plastic cassettes by the Hospital General de Mexico "Dr. Eduardo Liceaga". Specimens were diagnosed by two independent-senior pathologists in a double-blind test and classified into five different groups: F0, F1, F2, F3, and F4, according to the METAVIR scale for liver fibrosis. Fluorescence spectroscopy measurements were performed using three different excitation wavelengths: 385, 405, and 450 nm. Besides, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) measurements were taken with white light to determine morphological changes in the tissue and to compare the results with medical diagnosis. The spectral analysis at excitation wavelengths of 385 nm and 405 nm showed poor correlation with medical diagnosis. Likewise, in order to discard all possible error-sources involved in the measurements, an exhaustive study was carried out; it included the determination of the fluorescence noise produced by paraffin, cassette, and the tissue itself. At 450 nm excitation wavelength, no fluorescence by the cassette was detected and noise-subtraction methods were not required, this allows a high correlation of hepatic fibrosis stages between pathological diagnosis and spectroscopic analysis. For this excitation wavelength, 89.87% correlation with DRS measurements and 82.00% with medical diagnosis were obtained. This work demonstrates that fluorescence spectroscopy using 450 nm excitation wavelength might work as a complementary tool to grade hepatic fibrosis in human liver specimens. Background and Objective: Little information is available on how to assess the impact of research studies conducted in government hospitals in Latin America and specifically in Mexico. We aimed to determine the returns on investment of the research projects that were carried out in the Hospital General "Dr. Manuel Gea Gonzalez" (HGMGG), a general university hospital located in Mexico City, using a categorization model. Methods: We conducted a study including bibliometric analyses of publications associated with all research studies performed during the period 2016-2019 in the HGMGG and investigator interviews, according to the payback framework categorization model. Results: All studies analyzed had a positive impact based on outcomes in 5 "payback categories": (1) knowledge; (2) research targeting, capacity building, and absorption; (3) policy and product development; (4) health benefits; and (5) broader economic benefits. Conclusions: To date, it has not been possible to establish a set of indicators that show the results of the investigations carried out by medical specialists in training, who carry out the bulk of medical care in general hospitals and in the National Institutes of Health in Mexico. We identified, in the 5 categories of the payback framework model, different areas of opportunity to improve the benefits of the hospital's medical services through the development of scientific research projects. In the present study, the potential of three isolated microalgae strains from Bahía de La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico and identified as Schizochytrium sp. (Inner key: LPU-1), Chaetoceros sp. (LPU-2), and Chaetoceros sp. (LPU-3) for the cultivation of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was tested. The effects of isolated strains on the population growth and nutritional content (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and fatty acid composition) of B. plicatilis were evaluated. The feeding essay of B. plicatilis was carried out at 32 ± 2°C. Treatments were established using a monoalgal and dialgal diet: Schizochytrium sp. (LPU-1), Schizochytrium sp. (LPU-1)/Chaetoceros sp. (LPU-2), Chaetoceros sp. (LPU-2), Chaetoceros sp. (LPU-3), Chaetoceros sp. (LPU-2)/Chaetoceros sp. (LPU-3). The results show that the rotifers population growth ratio was higher with Schizochytrium sp. (LPU-1) 0.88 ± 0.43, Chaetoceros sp. (LPU-3), 0.87 ± 0.37, and from both 0.87 ± 0.40. The results show that the native microalgae of a North Pacific area mixed are an excellent source of nutrients for the growth and enhancement of the nutritional value of the rotifers, which can be used in the future to feed the larvae of marine fish more nutritionally and economically.
