The authors explore the intersection of AI and equity in education, presenting a workshop designed for marginalized youth in urban Mexico. This reflective essay stems from their participation in the International Society for Technology in Education’s AI and education course. The lead author, a language education researcher who emphasizes equity in her scholarship, crafted a presentation on AI’s everyday applications for marginalized Mexican youth. Collaborating organically, the co-authors positioned this project as the course’s final collective output, fostering a unique blend of expertise and community engagement. The lead author designed the presentation for an organization with which she has partnered for over a decade, an educational project that supports learning and life skills, rooted in Don Miguel Ruiz’s Four Agreements, for children who live in a community of unofficial housing on the edge of railroad tracks in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The project aimed to bridge the global application of AI to marginalized Mexicans, facilitating a two-hour workshop in Spring 2023. Two additional faculty, technology education researchers, joined the effort to promote computational literacy equitably through culturally relevant pedagogy. They highlight their diverse scholarly backgrounds, positioning themselves as individuals from the margins, and share their motivation for creating a cogent and engaging workshop for the youth. Aims: This study aimed to identify exposure to human, swine, and avian influenza A virus subtypes in rural companion and hunting dogs, backyard pigs, and feral pigs. Methods and Results: The study took place in a region of southeastern Mexico where the sampled individuals were part of backyard production systems in which different domestic and wild species coexist and interact with humans. We collected blood samples from pigs and dogs at each of the sites. We used a nucleoprotein enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay to determine the exposure of individuals to influenza A virus. Haemagglutination inhibition was performed on the positive samples to determine the subtypes to which they were exposed. For data analysis, a binomial logistic regression model was generated to determine the predictor variables for the seropositivity of the individuals in the study. We identified 11 positive individuals: three backyard pigs, four companion dogs, and four hunting dogs. The pigs tested positive for H1N1 and H1N2. The dogs were positive for H1N1, H1N2, and H3N2. The model showed that dogs in contact with backyard chickens are more likely to be seropositive for influenza A viruses. Conclusions: We demonstrated the essential role hunting dogs could play as intermediate hosts and potential mixing vessel hosts when exposed to human and swine‐origin viral subtypes. These results are relevant because these dogs interact with domestic hosts and humans in backyard systems, which are risk scenarios in the transmission of influenza A viruses. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to implement epidemiological surveillance of influenza A viruses in backyard animals, particularly in key animals in the transmission of these viruses, such as dogs and pigs. Background: Hospitalizations for ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSC) incur substantial costs on the health system that could be partially avoided with adequate outpatient care. Complications of chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus (DM), are considered ACSC. Previous studies have shown that hospitalizations due to diabetes have a significant financial burden. In Mexico, DM is a major health concern and a leading cause of death, but there is limited evidence available. This study aimed to estimate the direct costs of hospitalizations by DM-related ACSC in the Mexican public health system. Methods: We selected three hospitals from each of Mexico's main public institutions: the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), the Ministry of Health (MoH), and the Institute of Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE). We employed a bottom-up microcosting approach from the healthcare provider perspective to estimate the total direct costs of hospitalizations for DM-related ACSC. Input data regarding length of stay (LoS), consultations, medications, colloid/crystalloid solutions, procedures, and laboratory/medical imaging studies were obtained from clinical records of a random sample of 532 hospitalizations out of a total of 1,803 DM-related ACSC (ICD-10 codes) discharges during 2016. Results: The average cost per DM-related ACSC hospitalization varies among institutions, ranging from $1,427 in the MoH to $1,677 in the IMSS and $1,754 in the ISSSTE. The three institutions' largest expenses are LoS and procedures. Peripheral circulatory and renal complications were the major drivers of hospitalization costs for patients with DM-related ACSC. Direct costs due to hospitalizations for DM-related ACSC in these three institutions represent 1% of the gross domestic product (GDP) dedicated to health and social services and 2% of total hospital care expenses. Conclusions: The direct costs of hospitalizations for DM-related ACSC vary considerably across institutions. Disparities in such costs for the same ACSC among different institutions suggest potential disparities in care quality across primary and hospital settings (processes and resource utilization), which should be further investigated to ensure optimal supply utilization. Suicide is defined as the action of harming oneself with the intention of dying. It is estimated that worldwide, one person dies by suicide every 40 s, making it a major health problem. Studies in families have suggested that suicide has a genetic component, so the search for genetic variants associated with suicidal behavior could be useful as potential biomarkers to identify people at risk of suicide. In Mexico, some studies of gene variants related to neurotransmission and other important pathways have been carried out and potential association of variants located in the following genes has been suggested: SLC6A4, SAT-1, TPH-2, ANKK1, GSHR, SCARA50, RGS10, STK33, COMT, and FKBP5. This systematic review shows the genetic studies conducted on the Mexican population. This article contributes by compiling the existing information on genetic variants and genes associated with suicidal behavior, in the future could be used as potential biomarkers to identify people at risk of suicide. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the progressive and irreversible functional and/or structural impairment of the kidney; its main etiologies include hypertension and diabetes. Mexico has the second highest prevalence of CKD worldwide with a high economic burden affecting public and private health systems. Patients with higher knowledge about CKD increase their adherence to preventive treatment. In this study we aim to describe the knowledge of CKD in a sample of Mexican high-risk population, comparing it with general Mexican population, medical students and nephrologists. A cross-sectional, observational study was performed divided in two phases: translation and validation of the knowledge questionnaire to Spanish, and cross-sectional survey to evaluate the knowledge of CKD in patients with diagnosis of diabetes and/or hypertension. We interviewed medical students, general population, and nephrologists to attain validation of the questionnaire in Spanish. The questionnaire was answered by 1,061 participants within the high-risk population. The results of the questionnaire were: 22/24, 18/24, 13.8/24, and 13.4/24 in nephrologists, medical students, normal subjects, and high-risk population, respectively. The questions with least correct answers were related to kidney functions and CKD risk factors. To our knowledge this is the first time a questionnaire for CKD knowledge is applied in Mexican population. These findings suggest poor understanding of kidney functions, risk factors, and symptoms of CKD. It is important not only to provide medical treatment to chronic illness but also awareness of the consequences of not achieving goals of treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urbanized areas can impose selective pressures on insects which can be identified at the individual level based on animal physiological condition. Physiological condition can be measured from variables such as body size, body mass or energetic budget of individuals. We examined whether body mass, wing spot size and energy reserves (proteins, lipids and carbohydrates) were reduced as urbanization increases, using adults of two damselflies, Hetaerina americana and H. vulnerata, in Central Mexico. We used a Habitat Integrity Index to assess the degree of urbanization in our sampled sites, considering biophysical attributes and the impact of anthropogenic activities. We did not find relation of above individual variables with urbanization degree. These results support possible resilience of rubyspot damselflies in the face of radical changes such as urbanization. Our finding echoes other results in damselflies research. Implications for insect conservation: Our results highlight the resilience of these damselflies species in the face of urban disturbances. Thus design cities considering not only requirements of humans is essential to promote the presence and conservation of these and other species of insects in cities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the literature on how to make food systems just and sustainable, we often look at Alternative Food Networks (AFN) as a way forward. AFNs are initiatives that pose alternatives to conventional food systems (driven by productivism and harmful to human and environmental health). Despite this broad understanding of what AFNs can be, in practice, most cases presented in the literature look surprisingly alike. In this article, we challenge the scholars working on alternative food networks to look beyond the narrow definition of AFNs by considering cases of traditional agriculture and distribution systems. We illustrate this argument using the case of chinampas, a traditional agricultural system in Mexico City that contributes in different ways to local sustainability. Analysing semi-structured interviews conducted on site, we argue that chinampas can be defined as an alternative food network because of their modes of production, their diverse distribution channels, and their economic practices. We conclude that traditional food systems present an alternative to conventional food systems and should therefore be included in AFN research. Broadening the definition of AFNs so to include traditional and non-institutional practices can help identify diverse cases fitting this new lens, including in the Global North; it can also contribute to affirming the value of these traditional systems in building sustainable and just societies. The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of agroclimatic factors on the abundance of Anastrepha ludens (Loew) and A. obliqua (Macquart), in orchards of creole "Barranqueño" mango (Mangifera indica L.) in the municipalities of Amatitán, San Cristóbal de la Barranca, and Tequila (Jalisco, Mexico). Eighty-four Multilure traps were established to catch specimens from May to September 2021.The most abundant species was A. ludens (98.7%). The greatest abundance of A. ludens occurred during the postharvest (June) and at new vegetative growth of the mango -with and abundant presence of newly fallen fruit on the ground- (July) in all the municipalities, while A. obliqua was in June. The index of flies captured per trap per day (FTD) had values greater than 0.010, which showed that the study area has a high prevalence of pests. There was a significant correlation (P-value = 0.001) between the abundance of A. ludens with precipitation (19.30-260.60 mm) and minimum temperature (16.7–22.20 °C). The abundance of A. obliqua was very low (504 individuals in total) and did not correlate with any variable. The altitude range (842-1151.75 m asl) could influence the mango phenology and explain the differences in the abundance of these species. These results are evidence that precipitation and the survival of adults of these species, do not have a cause-effect relationship, and that population fluctuations between both Anastrepha species may be correlated with mango phenology and altitude. One approach to prioritise conservation efforts is to identify hotspots that are either species-rich or that harbour a high proportion of narrow-ranged species with varying functional roles. Given this, we have developed full ant species distribution models as tools for identifying biodiversity and hotspot areas in Mexico. We predicted ant species richness and potential areas of endemism using the more complete data available from across America (i.e., including both North America and South America) and habitat/ecological specificity (functional diversity) in a species distribution model (SDM). In Mexico, the ecoregions more relevant for ant species richness and endemism are Mesoamerica, Petenes, Sierra Madre Oriental, Trans-Mexican Volcanic, and the Sierra Madre Occidental. While for hypogeic and arboreal ants the hotspots were localized in the tropic biomes, for epigeic and subterranean ants, hotpots were most prevalent in the tropics and desert. Moreover, the geographical patterns suggest that some hotspots for ants converge with those hotspots proposed for other invertebrates and vertebrates. Implications for insect conservation: Our study highlights the importance of hotspots areas for biodiversity conservation, and provides data and maps for ant conservation programs. Simple Summary: A disease outbreak in a Swedish herd of beef cattle which may be related to a tick-borne infection initiated an in-depth study to investigate the presence of bacteria and viruses in clinically healthy and diseased cattle, as well as in wild deer and boars from the region and in ticks collected from the cattle and deer. The results indicated unusual types of Mycoplasma as possible causative factors, probably in combination with immune suppression due to granulocytic anaplasmosis caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum. The latter bacterium was widespread in the herd and was also found in wild deer in the region, and in ticks collected from the cattle and deer. Genetic comparisons indicated that Anaplasma phagocytophilum was circulating among the cattle population, while circulation between cattle and deer occurred infrequently. An outbreak of disease in a Swedish beef cattle herd initiated an in-depth study to investigate the presence of bacteria and viruses in the blood of clinically healthy (n = 10) and clinically diseased cattle (n = 20) using whole-genome shotgun sequencing (WGSS). The occurrence of infectious agents was also investigated in ticks found attached to healthy cattle (n = 61) and wild deer (n = 23), and in spleen samples from wild deer (n = 30) and wild boars (n = 10). Moreover, blood samples from 84 clinically healthy young stock were analysed for antibodies against Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia divergens. The WGSS revealed the presence of at least three distinct Mycoplasma variants that were most closely related to Mycoplasma wenyonii. Two of these were very similar to a divergent M. wenyonii variant previously only detected in Mexico. These variants tended to be more common in the diseased cattle than in the healthy cattle but were not detected in the ticks or wild animals. The DNA of A. phagocytophilum was detected in similar proportions in diseased (33%) and healthy (40%) cattle, while 70% of the deer, 8% of ticks collected from the cattle and 19% of the ticks collected from deer were positive. Almost all the isolates from the cattle, deer and ticks belonged to Ecotype 1. Based on sequencing of the groEL-gene, most isolates of A. phagocytophilum from cattle were similar and belonged to a different cluster than the isolates from wild deer. Antibodies against A. phagocytophilum were detected in all the analysed samples. In conclusion, uncommon variants of Mycoplasma were detected, probably associated with the disease outbreak in combination with immune suppression due to granulocytic anaplasmosis. It highlights the stigmatization of the LGBT community and the lack of respect for differences. Although universal biometrics have been broadly called for, and there are many validated technologies to recognize adults, these technologies have been ineffective in newborns and young children. The present work describes the development and clinical testing of a fingerprint capture system for longitudinal biometric recognition of newborns and young children to support vaccination and clinical follow-up. The reader consists of a high-resolution monochromatic imaging system with an ergonomic industrial design to comfortably support and align infant fingers for imaging without a platen. This imaging approach without a platen, also called free-space imaging, reduces fingerprint distortion and ensures a more consistent finger placement. This system was tested in a newborn ward and immunization clinic at an urban hospital in Baja, California, Mexico, from 2017 to 2019. Nearly five hundred children were enrolled and followed for up to 24 months. With a protocol of imaging all ten fingers, the failure to enroll (FTE) rate was < 1% when acquiring at least two fingers for all ages and < 2% when enrolling at least four fingers. The verification (1:1) true accept rate (TAR) was 77% for newborns enrolled at ≤ 3 days of age and 96% for those enrolled at ≥ 4 days of age, both at a time gap of 15–30 days after enrollment at a false accept rate (FAR) of 0.1%. Using the top-ranked match score, the identification rate (1:many) was 86% for the ≤ 3 days enrollment age and 97% for age ≥ 4 days for a single finger at 15–30 days after enrollment. The enrollment protocol and the frequency of updating will increase for infants compared to adults. However, these data suggest that a high-resolution, free space imaging technique may fill the final gap for universal biometrics across all populations called for by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16.9. Background: We summarize comparative ethnoornithological data for ten Mexican Indigenous communities, an initial step towards a comprehensive archive of the avian diversity conserved within Mexico's Indigenous territories. We do so by counting highlighted species listed for bird conservation status on widely recognized "red lists" and their cultural value to build biocultural policies in Mexico for their conservation. Methods: Indigenous bird names for each study site were determined to allow calculation of the "Scientific Species Recognition Ratio" (SSRR) for high cultural value birds obtained across communities. This demonstrated patterns of cultural prominence. A matrix of 1275 bird versus seven biocultural values was analysed using a correspondence analysis (InfoStat/L-v2020) to illustrate patterns of concordance between bird conservation status and cultural values. Results: This paper contributes to quantitative and qualitative data on the role of ethnoornithology and ethnobiology in biocultural conservation. The areas studied provide refugia for almost 70% of the Mexican avifauna within a fraction of 1% of the national territory, that is 769 bird species recorded for all communities. The global correspondence of regions of biological and linguistic megadiversity is well established, while linguistic diversity is widely accepted as a good proxy for general cultural diversity. Our correspondence analysis explained 81.55% of the variation, indicating a strong relation between cultural importance and bird conservation status. We propose three main categories to establish a bioculturally informed public policy in Mexico for the conservation of what we described as high, medium, and bioculturally prominent bird species all include cultural value in any material or symbolic aspect. High are those species appearing on any threatened list, but also considered in any endemic status, while medium include threatened listed species. The last category included species not necessarily listed on any threat list, but with a wide range of social and cultural uses. We suggest that the concept might be extended to other species of biocultural importance. Conclusions: We argue that bird conservation policies should be biocultural, that is they should recognize birds of cultural value on a par with bird species "of special interest" because they are most critical for biodiversity conservation. The desire of local people to protect their traditional community lands and livelihoods can be an effective biodiversity conservation strategy, which should be recognized in national biocultural policies. Serjania is among the largest Neotropical genera of Sapindaceae and comprises ∼240 species. Traditionally, the genus has been defined by its schizocarpic fruits separating into three distally winged mericarps. However, recent phylogenetic studies have revealed that fruit type is not consistent within the genus and that it also includes a few species having capsular fruits that were previously placed in other genera. A phylogenetic analysis is presented based on nuclear ITS and chloroplast trnL-F sequences. The ingroup consisted of 48 species broadly sampled from across the geographic range and taxonomic spectrum of Serjania and focusing on species with atypical fruits. An ancestral character state reconstruction of fruit type was performed and demonstrated that the ancestral fruit type of the genus is strongly supported to be a schizocarp, but there are at least five independent derivations to capsular fruits and at least one transition back from capsules to schizocarps. Also, transitions from winged to wingless mericarps have occurred at least twice. Infrageneric classification is problematic and all of the sections that were represented by more than one species come out as poly- or paraphyletic. Our limited sample of taxa precludes the possibility of a new classification at present and a broader phylogenetic sample of the genus will be needed to understand relationships and determine which lineages warrant formal recognition. In addition to the phylogenetic study, Serjania frutescens, a new capsular-fruited species from Michoacán, Mexico, is described, illustrated, and compared with its putative closest relatives. A key is provided to differentiate this species from other Mexican Serjania with capsular fruits, and new synonymies and lectotypifications associated with capsular-fruited Serjania tortuosa and S. sonorensis are established. Phylogenetic results suggest that these two are cryptic species and at least superficially indistinguishable by morphology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To efficiently face the accelerated landscape transformation and its consequences in restructuring biotic communities and ecosystem services, one first question is which regional systems deserve prioritization for empirical assessments and interventive strategies. For the particular case of vector-borne disease control, we should consider generalist predators exhibiting differential responses to land-use change, as is the case of odonate insects. Thus, our aim was to infer land uses in Mexico where odonates (i.e., damselflies and dragonflies) might have some potential to predate mosquitoes of medical relevance. The study area included the hydrological basins of central Mexico. We modelled 167 species of odonates, four species of mosquitoes, and 51 land-use categories. Inferring spatial co-occurrence patterns from data mining and complex networks, we identified: (1) the ecological network of odonates and mosquitoes and (2) the land uses shared by these two groups. We inferred that 34% of odonate species co-occur with mosquitoes of medical relevance mainly in some preserved—mountain mesophyll cloud forest, high evergreen rainforest, and low tropical dry forest—but also in highly modified—human settlements, irrigation-based and pastures crop fields—land uses with strong human presence. Dry farming, or techniques of cultivating crops in regions with domineering dry seasons, was central to Black agricultural life across the Black diaspora, but especially in the Black Pacific. Ecologically, the Black diaspora transformed semi-arid ecosystems in both the Atlantic and Pacific. However, there is a dearth of Black narratives that draw on the ecological and botanical relationships held with the land. Through a collaborative botanical and historical approach that blends historical ecology and botany, we evaluate how Black placemaking occurred despite arid climatic stressors and as a result of ecological and cultural knowledge systems. Highlighting Black agricultural life in Costa Chica, Mexico and Blackdom, New Mexico, we argue that people and plants made cimarronaje (or collective and situated Black placemaking) possible in the Western coasts and deserts of Mexico and New Mexico through botanical knowledge systems of retaining water and cultivating a life in water-scarce environments. Conservation biogeography, which applies principles, theories, and analyses of biodiversity distribution patterns to address conservation challenges, can provide valuable insight and guidance to policy making for protection of biodiversity at multiple scales. The temperate and tropical ecosystems of the Nearctic-Neotropical transition in the small western state of Colima, Mexico, support a mosaic of remarkably diverse fauna and flora and provide a rare opportunity to determine spatial distribution patterns of terrestrial vertebrate species, assess human-induced threats, and identify potential conservation strategies. We analyzed the spatial distribution patterns and correlated them with the current land cover and extent of the protected areas. Despite its limited geographic extension, 29% (866) of all vertebrates, and almost a quarter of both endemic and threatened species in Mexico, live in Colima. Our analysis identified clear high-richness concentration sites (i.e., "hotspots") coincident for all groups and that elevation and both temperate and tropical ecosystems composition exert significant influence on richness patterns. Furthermore, current species´ distribution also showed significant correlation with natural and disturbed landcover. Significant hotspots for all species groups coincided poorly with the limited protected areas in the state (only 3.8%). The current state of natural land cover (less than 16%) in the state, coupled with its remarkable biological importance, highlights the need for further complementary conservation efforts including expansion and creation of new protected areas, significant restoration efforts and other conservation measures to maintain this uniquely biogeographic and biological diverse region of the country. Soil respiration is a critical ecological process and is a hierarchical component of ecosystem respiration that regulates the global carbon cycle. But there is scarce knowledge on respiration dynamics in water-stressed ecosystems and the influence of biocrusts. Soil respiration-values varied from 0.099 to 0.828 µmol s−1 m−2 after extraordinary rains; after this period, recorded values were null or negative at the most (0.000 to −0.055 µmol s−1 m−2). Shrubland soil with and without biocrusts showed the highest net CO2 exchange values and in disturbed soil with and without biocrusts (0.067; 0.059; 0.048, and 0.023 µmol s−1 m−2). The results showed that shrubland soil with BSC absorbed more CO2 than the rest of the experimental variants. Accordingly, the observed low precipitation combined with high temperatures and evapotranspiration could not activate the BSC respiration process. Such an event seemed to occur under specific temperature and moisture conditions, anyhow related to extraordinary rain events to emit CO2 to the atmosphere. Reports of negative soil respiration values in drylands are very scarce, so we discuss the possible processes that could cause this phenomenon for our study area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Mexico–China economic relationship is highly asymmetric, although the amount of total trade between the two countries has grown rapidly in the last ten years. Chinese exports to Mexico have grown exponentially and have diversified into different economic sectors. In contrast, Mexican exports to China have also grown but at a much slower pace and the pattern shows more concentration in fewer products. Paradoxically, in the context of the United States–China trade war, the Mexican economy has benefitted from the increase in tariffs that the United States has imposed on Chinese products. In 2019, for the first time, Mexico displaced China as a main trade partner of the United States. In this context, this article analyses the current economic relationship of Mexico with China and the United States in a triangular scheme, the impact of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement on the China–Mexico relationship, and Mexico's trade relationship with both economies in the context of the trade war. The present study examined the validity of the coronaphobia phenomenon with healthcare professionals using a psychometric approach. Using SurveyMonkey, an adapted version of the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale—Healthcare version (CAS-HC) was administered to 231 adult healthcare professionals in Mexico. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that dysfunctional coronavirus anxiety symptoms cohered into a reliable, single factor structure of coronaphobia. A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated that the classification features of the CAS-HC were strong, but supported a less stringent cut-score for this population. Construct validity was supported by the positive correlations between the CAS-HC and measures of depression and generalized anxiety, while known groups validity was found with high CAS-HC scores exhibited by those working in emergency rooms, triage, and intensive care units. The findings collectively support the coronaphobia construct with healthcare professionals, and the finding that over one third of the participants in the study scored in the clinical range on this measure points to the critical importance of assessing and alleviating this form of distress in this vulnerable but indispensable workforce. Background: Grit is used by birds mainly for grinding hard food items but can also serve a nutritional role as a source of minerals. Ingestion of grit by birds has been documented primarily in species that feed on seeds and invertebrates. Although feeding mainly on nectar and small arthropods, hummingbirds also ingest grit, but why they do so is unclear. We quantified the number of grit particles in the stomachs of six species of hummingbirds during an annual cycle in a seasonal ecosystem of West Mexico. Methods: We compared the number of grit particles in the stomachs of different hummingbird species (Mexican Violetear Colibri thalassinus, Amethyst-throated Mountaingem Lampornis amethystinus, White-eared Hummingbird Basilinna leucotis, Rivoli's Hummingbird Eugenes fulgens, Broad-tailed Hummingbird Selasphorus platycercus, and Rufous Hummingbird S. rufus), and between sex and age categories during the different seasons of a year. To determine if grit was used to grind ingested arthropods, we examined the relationships between the number of grit particles, the biomass of arthropods ingested, and their chitin content. Results: Although species did not differ in the number of grit particles in their stomachs, we found that grit was mostly ingested by female individuals, with only one male of one species (Mexican Violetear) presenting grit in its stomach. We also found that female hummingbirds had grit in their stomachs during the rainy and the cold-dry season (June–February) but not during the warm-dry season (March–May). Our analyses revealed no relationship between the number of grit particles and the amount of ingested arthropods and arthropod chitin content. However, high grit consumption was related to wasp ingestion on Mexican Violetears. Conclusions: Our results indicate that grit is used mainly by female hummingbirds. The seasonal variation in the ingestion of grit by female individuals suggests that it can be used to meet mineral requirements related to breeding; however, this topic needs further exploration. Additionally, the use of grit was proportionally higher in juvenile individuals, suggesting it is used for grinding arthropods during a period of fast development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. To identify barriers, facilitators and proposals for improvement in the implementation of CPG from the perspective of health professionals. Materials and methods. Qualitative study through 85 semi-structured interviews with those responsible for the implementation, dissemination and application activities, and of the operational personnel in primary care centers and hospitals in seven states of Mexico. The content was coded and analyzed with ATLAS.ti 7.0. Results. The main barriers found were the failure to update the CPGs and low alignment with other standards, and the impossibility of implementing them due to work overload and limited resources. Conclusions. The effort to implement CPG seems to have been erratic and insufficient, and the evaluation of its use non-existent. It is proposed to create integrated and contextualized strategies that prove to be more effective and efficient for the successful implementation of the CPG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Conservation planning requires information at adequate scales for decision-making and priority definition. Considering the importance of the Usumacinta river basin, we assessed the distribution of vertebrate richness (amphibians, birds and mammals), threatened species, and their representativeness in protected areas (PAs). We overlapped distribution polygons derived from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species over a 72 km2 grid of the watershed and overlapped the PAs. For the three groups we defined areas of high species richness and threatened species (hotspots), and defined three conservation targets (25, 50 and 75% of species richness of each group) and their representativeness in PAs. We found hotspots for birds and mammals, and high heterogeneity within the three groups. In total 81, 98 and 94% of amphibians, birds and mammals are present in at least in one PA, as well as 69, 78 and 53% of threatened amphibians, mammals and birds, respectively. Most of the high richness cells are not protected—only 26% of the 50% species richness cells and 10% of the 75% target cells. We highlight the need for complementing the PA system in the three countries comprising the study area (Mexico, Belize and Guatemala) in order to protect vertebrate diversity and reduce the growing threats to the basin.
