Objective: To determine the structural and phenological characteristics of four major tree species in the tropical deciduous forests. Design/Methodology/Approach: To determine their structure, ≥10 cm wide trees were registered at a height of 1.30 m in 30 sites of 500 m². For phenological purposes, seven sites were selected. The following phenological stages were evaluated: dormancy, vegetative, flowering, fruiting, and seeding. Results: Four hundred and five individuals belonging to the four species under study were found: copal ancho (Bursera copallifera (Sessé & Moc.) ex DC. Bullock), Mexican kidneywood (Eysenhardtia polystachya (Ortega) Sarg.), tecolhuixtle (Mimosa benthamii (J.F. Macbr. var. bentha-mii)), and tepemezquite (Lysiloma divaricatum (Jacq.) Macbride). Tepemezquite ranked first according to the Relative Importance Value Index. Based on the phenological characteristics observed, three species lost foliage at some time of the year and only tecolhuixtle was evergreen. Study Limitations/Implications: The results and conclusions are limited only to individuals with ≥10 cm in diameter. Further results can be extrapolated from this data. Findings/Conclusions: The structural and phenological features of the four species evaluated in ejido El Limón have similar characteristics to those that have been described for this type of vegetation in other locations in Mexico. Se registra Painteria leptophylla como planta hospedera, de donde emergieron los brúquidos Stator limbatus y Merobruchus politus en Hidalgo, México. El daño a las semillas en esta planta fue 20% de S. limbatus y 17% para M. politus. Se añade como planta hospedera a Mimosa sp., para M. politus; además se presenta un nuevo registro de distribución para el estado de Hidalgo de la especie Acathoscelides rufovittatus. Painteria leptophylla is recorded as a host plant from which the bruchids Stator limbatus and Merobruchus politus emerged at Hidalgo, Mexico. The damage to seeds was 20% by S. limbatus and 17% by M. politus. The Mimosa sp. plant is a new host for M. politus , and Hidalgo a new geographical record for Acathoscelides rufovittatus. Tropical deciduous forests are diverse ecosystems. They are threatened in Mexico, and little is known about the germination of many of the seeds from this ecosystem. The aim of this research was to evaluate the seed germination of six timber species from a tropical deciduous forest, under the premise that the heavier the seeds, they will produce greater germination than those lighter and smaller. Mature fruits from six tree species were gathered in the municipal area of Huehuetlan el Chico, Puebla. The variables were humidity content, weight of 100 seeds, germination, germination speed and the mean of germination time in light and darkness at 30 °C. Every factor to be determined was considered a treatment with four replications of 25 seeds each, in a completely randomized design. An ANOVA was carried out using the data and the means were compared using Tukey’s test (p£0.05). The seeds of the species showed a similar humidity content to others found in this type of vegetation. Seed weight depended on each species and had no influence on the percentage of germination. In addition, the light/darkness condition did not determine germination, either, except in Pitecellobium acatlense and Tabebuia impetiginosa for the speed and mean time of germination. Dalberghia congestiflora had one of the highest percentages, it produced more germinated seeds per day, and it also reached 50% germination in a shorter time than the others. • The legume genus Mimosa has > 500 species, with two major centres of diversity, Brazil (c. 350 spp.) and Mexico (c. 100 spp.). In Brazil most species are nodulated by Burkholderia. Here we asked whether this is also true of native and endemic Mexican species. • We have tested this apparent affinity for betaproteobacteria by examining the symbionts of native and endemic species of Mimosa in Mexico, especially from the central highlands where Mimosa spp. have diversified. Nodules were tested for betaproteobacteria using in situ immunolocalization. Rhizobia isolated from the nodules were genetically characterized and tested for their ability to nodulate Mimosa spp. • Immunological analysis of 25 host taxa suggested that most (including all the highland endemics) were not nodulated by betaproteobacteria. Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA, recA, nodA, nodC and nifH genes from 87 strains isolated from 20 taxa confirmed that the endemic Mexican Mimosa species favoured alphaproteobacteria in the genera Rhizobium and Ensifer: this was confirmed by nodulation tests. • Host phylogeny, geographic isolation and coevolution with symbionts derived from very different soils have potentially contributed to the striking difference in the choice of symbiotic partners by Mexican and Brazilian Mimosa species. Tropical forests will experience relatively large changes in temperature and rainfall towards the end of this century. Little is known about how tropical trees will respond to these changes. We used tree rings to establish climate-growth relations of a pioneer tree, Mimosa acantholoba, occurring in tropical dry secondary forests in southern Mexico. The role of large-scale climatic drivers in determining interannual growth variation was studied by correlating growth to sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, including the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Annual growth varied eightfold over 1970–2007, and was correlated with wet season rainfall ( r=0.75). Temperature, cloud cover and solar variation did not affect growth, although these climate variables correlated with growth due to their relations with rainfall. Strong positive correlations between growth and SSTA occurred in the North tropical Atlantic during the first half of the year, and in the Pacific during the second half of the year. The Pacific influence corresponded closely to ENSO-like influences with negative effects of high SSTA in the eastern Pacific Niño3.4 region on growth due to decreases in rainfall. During El Niño years growth was reduced by 37%. We estimated how growth would be affected by the predicted trend of decreasing rainfall in Central America towards the end of this century. Using rainfall predictions of two sets of climate models, we estimated that growth at the end of this century will be reduced by 12% under a medium (A1B) and 21% under a high (A2) emission scenario. The article focuses on the cultural and ecological roles of Mimosa species in the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley, Mexico, based on a fieldwork study. The fieldwork included interviews, plant surveys and collections, and market visits in the Valley from 1994 to 2002. Through this study, information regarding the uses of the Mimosa species within the Valley, its status as a multipurpose species and its potential role in local management strategies were gathered. The 15 useful Mimosa. species reported in the study area represent about 50 percent of all the useful Mimosa species found in Mexico. Mimosa (M.) adenantheroides, M. brevispicata and M. purpusii, reportedly, are the recent-most among those 15 species. Nine species are shrubs and the other six are either shrubs or trees. These species are used mostly as fodder for goats as well as a source of wood for fuel and construction, mainly of fences and animal shelters. Leaves, branches, and roots of M. albida are used in traditional medicines. Some species are used as living fences protecting corn-fields.

Abstract. In this paper we analyse six communities with seven Mimosa species in the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán valley, Mexico. All species are endemic to Mexico and four are endemic to the valley. Mimosa species are found in (1) the 'matorral xerófilo' (arid tropical scrub): Mimosa calcicola, M. lacerata, M. luisana, M. polyantha and M. purpusii, and (2) the 'selva baja caducifolia' (tropical deciduous forest): M. adenantheroides, Mimosa texana var. filipes. Most of them occur in similar soil environments, while M. polyantha and M. calcicola establish in particular soil conditions and only M. luisana establishes in two different sites showing a wider range of adaptation to soil characteristics. The communities studied include 24 plant families, 51 genera and ca. 70 species (5% of the total flora estimated in the valley). Heterogeneity was found among the communities. Our results point to the replacement of 'matorral xerófilo' and 'selva baja caducifolia' by 'matorral espinoso' (thorny scrub). Thorny species (e.g. Acacia cochliacantha, Mimosa spp.) are becoming the dominant/codominant elements in the communities. Within the communities, Mimosa species have a significant influence on soil pH, organic matter and electrical conductivity values. These species contribute to ameliorate soil nutrient conditions (OM, N[sub tot], P, Ca, Mg, Na and K contents) as well as other environmental factors (e.g. temperature, shade) under their canopy in degraded plant communities and may serve as 'resource islands'. Two new taxa of Mimosa are described from the Chihuahuan Desert region, M. setuliseta Villarreal from the southern portion and M. emoryana Benth. var. canescens Villarreal from the eastern portion. • Most of the strains isolated were nodule associated bacteria. • Pseudomonas was frequently isolated from the nodules. • Mimosa pudica contains the largest number of genera as nodule associated bacteria. • Burkholderia and Brevibacillus are potential new nodulating bacteria. • Indoleacetic acid synthesis was common among the isolated strains. Central southern Mexico contains highly diverse legumes. In this study, nodule-associated bacteria (NAB) were isolated from wild legume nodules and from nodules on Phaseolus vulgaris plants used as a plant-trap in soils from the same areas as the wild legumes. The bacteria were identified through the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, tested for plant growth-promoting (PGP) activities and the production of antimicrobial compounds, and analyzed for potential nodulation by amplifying the nodC gene. Several genera with PGP activity were isolated from legume nodules, including Achromobacter, Acinetobacter, Bacillus, Brevibacillus , Brevibacterium, Burkholderia, Cupriavidus, Dyella, Ensifer, Enterobacter, Herbaspirillum, Kosakonia, Labrys, Microbacterium, Moraxella, Paraburkholderia, Pseudomonas, Rhizobium, Stenotrophomonas; and Aeromonas, Marinococcus Pseudarthrobacter and Pseudoxanthomonas were found in plant legume nodules for the first time. Pseudomonas was the most common bacteria, and Mimosa pudica was colonized by the largest number of genera (6 different genera). A Burkholderia strain from the Burkholderia cepacia complex and a firmicutes strain harbor the nodC gene, identifying them as potential novel nodulating bacteria and showing that most of the strains isolated in this study were NAB. The most frequent PGP activity identified among the strains isolated from wild legumes was IAA synthesis. Two bacteria, Stenotrophomonas sp. and Rhizobium sp., synthesized more than 250 μg/ml, which is more than the level of synthesis reported in this study for Azospirillum brasilense Sp7 (59.77 μg/ml). Nitrogen fixation and antimicrobial compound production were not common, but the production of siderophores was frequently found among all the strains. Leguminous plants have received special interest for the diversity of β-proteobacteria in their nodules and are promising candidates for biotechnological applications. In this study, 15 bacterial strains were isolated from the nodules of the following legumes: Indigofera thibaudiana, Mimosa diplotricha, Mimosa albida, Mimosa pigra, and Mimosa pudica, collected in 9 areas of Chiapas, Mexico. The strains were grouped into four profiles of genomic fingerprints through BOX-PCR and identified based on their morphology, API 20NE biochemical tests, sequencing of the 16S rRNA, nifH and nodC genes as bacteria of the Burkholderia genus, genetically related to Burkholderia phenoliruptrix, Burkholderia phymatum, Burkholderia sabiae, and Burkholderia tuberum. The Burkholderia strains were grown under stress conditions with 4% NaCl, 45°C, and benzene presence at 0.1% as the sole carbon source.
