This article presents, for the first time, complete annual series of the Mexican population by states during the period 1820-70. It is based on the available contemporary surveys and the most recent estimates, as well as on some calculations made in order to fill the remaining gaps. We also estimate the percentage changes and the growth rates among significant years that are implicit in the new series. These, together with other indicators, allow us to conclude that Mexican demographic growth was slow. To conclude, we explore the most significant factors that may explain such behavior, namely, wars, invasions and political instability, epidemics, and economic development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two new species of Echinoderes are described from Mexico. Echinoderes abeli sp. nov. is described from the archipelago Islas Marias in the Mexican Pacific Ocean west coast. The species is characterized by very short and stout lateral terminal spines, middorsal spines on segments 4 to 8 and lateroventral spines on segments 6 to 9, lateroventral tubes on segment 2 and 5, midlateral tubes on segment 4, and sublateral ones on segment 8, and in laterodorsal positions on segment 10, as well as glandular cell outlets type 2 in subdorsal positions segment 2. The second new species, Echinoderes wilberti sp. nov. is described from the Caribbean coast in Yucatan. The new species show great resemblance with another species, Echinoderes horni , that occurred at the same locality. The only notable difference is a pair of subdorsal tubes on segment 2, present in E. wilberti sp. nov. only. However, barcoding of COI demonstrated the two morphospecies differed genetically more than 8%. This result shows that small morphological differences might be supported by much more conspicuous molecular differences. Based on the high level of morphological similarity between E. wilberti sp. nov. and E. horni , as well as a third Caribbean species, Echinoderes parahorni , a species group, the E. horni group, is proposed to accommodate this potentially monophyletic group of species. 'Milano-type' salami from 13 European and American countries were analysed to establish their nutritional value in relation to fat and fatty acid composition. The fat content, fatty acid profile, ratio of n-6/n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, ratio of hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic fatty acids (h/H) and the contribution to the daily intake recommended for the population were studied. Differences (P<0.05) in the dry matter, pH, water activity, fat content, and percentages of saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids were found. Principal component analysis permitted samples to be separated into three different groups: (1) salamis from Chile, Mexico and Brazil, with high n-6/n-3 ratios (14-16), medium iodine index (73-76) and high h/H ratios (2.6-2.7); (2) European salamis and salamis from Costa Rica and USA, with medium and high n-6/n-3 ratios (8-15), low iodine index (62-72) and low h/H ratios (2.1-2.6); and (3) products from Peru, with the lowest n-6/n-3 ratio (7.2), the highest iodine index (about 80) and medium h/H ratio (2.5).
