The high prevalence of obesity in Mexico starting from the early stages of life is concerning and represents a major public health problem. Genetic association studies have reported that single nucleotide variants (SNVs) in SIRT1, an NAD+- dependent deacetylase that plays an important role in the regulation of metabolic cellular functions, are associated with multiple metabolic disorders and the risk of obesity. In the present study, we analyzed the effect that the SNVs rs1467568 and rs7895833 of the SIRT1 gene may have on cardiometabolic risk factors in a young adult population from Mexico. A cross-sectional study was carried out with young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 who had a body mass index (BMI) greater than 18.5 kg/m2. This study included 1122 young adults who were classified into the normal weight (n = 731), overweight group (n = 277), and obesity group (n = 114) according to BMI of whom 405 and 404 volunteers were genotyped for rs1467568 and rs7895833 respectively using TaqMan probes through allelic discrimination assays. We found that the male sex carrying the G allele of rs7895833 had slightly lower BMI levels (p = 0.009). Furthermore, subjects carrying rs1467568 (G allele) showed a 34% lower probability of presenting with hyperbetalipoproteinemia where female carrying rs1467568 had lower levels of total cholesterol (p = 0.030), triglycerides (p = 0.026) and LDL cholesterol (p = 0.013). In conclusion, these findings suggest that the presence of both SNVs could have a non-risk effect against dyslipidemia in the Mexican population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a palaeohydrological reconstruction of Lake Texcoco over the last 32.7 cal ka based on ostracod records consisting of two species, Candona patzcuaro and Limnocytherina axalapasco. Overall, the presence of these species suggests that Lake Texcoco was highly saline and experienced occasional desiccation periods. Moreover, this work helps improve our knowledge of L. axalapasco, an endemic species of central Mexico; their eggs could remain dormant‐resting to survive long dry periods. Four ostracod zones reflect the main environmental changes that occurred during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene. From 32.7 to 30 cal ka bp (Zone 4), Lake Texcoco's water levels were stable and alkaline with saline conditions. Zone 3, representing the period from 30 to 18 cal ka bp, includes a period of enhanced precipitation (greatest abundance of C. patzcuaro) from 30 to 26 cal ka bp. From 26 to 18 cal ka bp, an abundance of L. axalapasco reflects shallower and more saline conditions. The Last Glacial Maximum was characterised by cold and humid conditions with enhanced runoff, especially at 25.3, 21.9, and 20.7 cal ka bp. A sediment record from Lake Chalco, Basin of Mexico, revealed the presence of two endemic ostracod species during the latter part of Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 6 (146–130 ka) and MIS5 (130–72 ka), namely Candona alchichica and Limnocytherina axalapasco. Higher abundance of C. alchichica was found during MIS6, when prevailing conditions were cold, lake waters were fresh, and relatively deep bottom waters were anoxic. The species is typically associated with saline environments today, consistent with its presence in MIS5 sediments. The Chalco record, however, reveals that it coexisted with freshwater diatom species during MIS6. Thus, we suggest that C. alchichica had a wider salinity tolerance, ranging from freshwater to more saline environments. Examination of MIS5 substages provides further insights into ostracod species responses to changing lake conditions. During MIS5e, the lake water level declined and salinity and dissolved oxygen in the water column increased, thereby favouring L. axalapasco productivity, whereas C. alchichica productivity decreased. Enhanced runoff and lower than average evaporation during MIS5d coincided with the increasing abundance of C. alchichica, suggesting a period of relatively high lake level and more dilute waters. These environmental conditions, however, changed during MIS5c when lake stage dropped once again and L. axalapasco abundance increased. Shallow conditions during this substage were optimal for L. axalapasco. Subsequently, as the lake level continued to decline during MIS5b, both ostracod species disappeared from the sediment record. Finally, during MIS5a, runoff increased and both ostracod species reappeared in the record, with L. axalapasco dominating, suggesting another period of lake level recovery. Increased evaporation rates during the last part of this substage (75–72 cal ka BP) may have led to disappearance of ostracods from the sediment record. Objective: To improve the nutrition of the pineapple (Ananas comosus) cultivation using fertilizers. Design/Methodology/Approach: The Sistema Integrado para Recomendar Dosis de Fertilizantes (SIRDF) established the fertilization doses for pineapple in the Cutanic Acrisol (Endoclayic, Hyperdystric, Ferric) (ACct(ncehdfr)) --N(230kg)-P(183kg)-K(300kg)-- and Cutanic Acrisol (Endoclayic, Ferric) (ACct(ncefr)) --N(253kg)-P(138kg)-K(360kg)-- soil sub-units. The SIRDF doses were compared with the control dose (producer): N(85kg), P(85kg), and K(85kg). Results: The fruits harvested from the ACct(ncehdfr) soil to which the SIRDF dose was applied were larger (cm, without the crown), heavier (kg, with and without the crown), and also had higher °Brix values compared with control. This was not the case for the crown, which was heavier when the producer dose was applied. Meanwhile, the produce harvested from the ACct(ncefr) soil to which the SIRDF dose was applied included taller plants (cm), larger fruits (cm, with crown), larger crowns (cm), wider fruits (cm, circumference), heavier fruits (kg, with and without crown), and higher ºBrix values; on the contrary, the crowns were heavier (kg) in control. Study Limitations/Implications: Yield and fruit quality observations are affected by the quality of the Cabezona pineapple vegetable materials, agronomic management, and the attack of citrus mealybugs. Findings/Conclusions: The fruits produced using the SIRDF doses had lower ºBrix than the Cayena Lisa and MD pineapples. A 56-58 t ha-1 volume of fruit can be produced. We present a palaeohydrological reconstruction of Lake Chalco from 70 to 11.5 ka BP based on ostracod records consisting of three species: Limnocytherina axalapasco, Candona patzcuaro , and Cypridopsis vidua. Overall, the presence of these species helped investigate Lake Chalco water level fluctuations, and thus water salinity variations. Moreover, this work helped improve our knowledge of L. axalapasco and Candona alchichica , two endemic species of Central Mexico, the latter of which was replaced by C. patzcuaro after the cold and dry MIS4. Five ostracod zones reflect the main environmental changes that occurred during the Late Pleistocene. During 70–62 ka BP (Zone 5), shallow and very variable salinity conditions were inferred with a possible occupancy of submerged macrophytes. The Lake Chalco water level increased from 62 to 49 ka BP (Zone 4) and relatively less saline conditions were inferred. The warmer period from of 49–39 ka BP (Zone 3) was characterised by lower lake levels and a gradually increasing salinity. The evaporation rates continued to increase during 39–27 ka BP (Zone 2). However, a higher runoff input helped maintain a relatively high lake level. The Little Ice Age (LIA), AD 1350-1850, represents one of the most recent, persistent global climate oscillations. In Mexico, it has been associated with temperature decreases of 1.5-2 °C and mountain glacier advances, which are not accurately dated. We present new information about the nature of the LIA in central Mexico based on a decadal-resolution sediment sequence from high-altitude, tropical Lake La Luna, in the Nevado de Toluca volcano. We inferred past climatic and environmental changes using magnetic susceptibility, charcoal particles, palynomorphs, diatoms, cladoceran remains and multivariate statistics. The onset of the LIA corresponds with the beginning of a long-term trend to colder and drier climate ca. AD 1360-1910. The coolest and driest episode, ~AD 1660-1760, which corresponds with the Maunder Minimum in solar activity, was characterized by a cladoceran assemblage that showed the greatest dissimilarity to the modern one (no modern analogue), with the presence of cold-water species and Daphnia ephippia. The beginning of a warming trend ca. AD 1760, was identified by a diatom assemblage dominated by species with affinities for higher pH values (>6) and the greatest dissimilarity to the modern assemblage. This less cold, but still dry period, corresponds with historical reports of cattle and crop losses that predated the Mexican wars of Independence (AD 1810-1821) and Revolution (1910-1924). Modern conditions, established around AD 1910, resemble those during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (ca. AD 1200). No clear evidence of modern, human-induced environmental change was recorded, indicating that Lake La Luna is an ideal site in Mexico to monitor future impacts of global change. Almost no studies have been done with respect to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) polymorphism and sequence diversity in bats, although they account for one in five living mammalian species. We analysed MHC Class II DRB polymorphism and sequence diversity in two Mexican verpertilionid bat species, the widespread continental species Myotis velifer and the narrowly distributed (and endangered) island endemic Myotis vivesi. We find extensive DRB polymorphism in the widespread M. velifer, similar to that commonly reported in other mammals. The geographically restricted M. vivesi by contrast shows only very limited polymorphism. We conclude that M. vivesi has undergone a dramatic loss of MHC polymorphism. The objective of the study was to identify key elements of the feeding ecology of the dolphinfish, which is a high tropic predator important for sport and artisanal fishing in the Mexican Pacific. Feeding habits were investigated during the years 2000–2003. This species is seasonal in the southern Gulf of California and probably remains there because of the abundant prey. The contents of 232 dolphinfish stomachs were analyzed, identifying 98 prey species, although only eight of these were well-represented in the diet. The most important prey by weight was the fish Hemiramphus saltator, however by number and frequency of occurrence was the crustacean Hemisquilla californiensis. No differences in the diet were found between males and females, although there was an ontogenic diet shift between seasons. There was no relationship between dolphinfish size and prey size, because dolphinfish fed preferentially on prey with an average size of 4.7 cm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Little is known concerning the epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii infection in people and animals in rural Mexico. Serum samples and tissues from 150 dogs (Canis familaris), 150 cats (Felis catus), 65 opossums (Didelphis virginianus), 249 rats (Rattus spp.), 127 mice (Mus musculus), and 69 squirrels (Spermophilus variegatus) from the Durango area were evaluated for T. gondii infection. Using a modified agglutination test and a serum dilution of 1:25, antibodies to this parasite were found in 68 (45.3%) of 150 dogs, 14 (9.3%) of 150 cats, 11 (16.6%) of 66 opossums, 2 (0.8%) of 249 rats, 4 (3.1%) of 127 mice, and 0 of 69 squirrels. Tissues (brain and heart) of dogs, cats, opossums, rats, mice, and squirrels were bioassayed in mice for the presence of T. gondii. Viable T. gondii was isolated in tissues from 3 of 28 seropositive dogs and 5 of 8 seropositive cats, but not from the other animals. The DNA obtained from the 3 T. gondii isolates from dogs, 6 isolates from 5 cats, and 4 isolates from free-range chickens from Mexico, previously isolated, were genotyped. The PCR-RFLP typing, which used 11 markers (B1, SAG1, SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29-2, L358, PK1, and Apico), identified 5 genotypes. One genotype (the 4 chicken isolates) belongs to the clonal Type III lineage, three genotypes were reported in previous reports, and 1 genotype is unique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In the eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO), dolphinfish (Coryphaena spp.) are caught incidentally by the tuna purse-seine fishery; therefore, the records of this fishery are a good source of information to analyze the distribution of dolphinfish. To determine the spatiotemporal distribution of dolphinfish and catch variability in the three types of tuna-fishing sets (on schools associated with dolphins or with floating objects, or on unassociated schools), statistical analyses were made of the 1998–2005 records taken by scientific observers on board tuna-fishing vessels. The incidental catch did not show a well-defined annual or seasonal distribution pattern. Two high catch areas were observed, the first located in Mexican offshore waters (15–25°N), with 15% of the total catch, and the second located in offshore waters of the central EPO (0–10°N), with almost 60% of the total catch. The incidental catch was significantly different among years and seasons (H 7,780 =54.6, p <0.05 for years, and H 3,780 =42.7, p <0.05 for seasons), the greatest catch being recorded during 1999 and the first two quarters, respectively. Sets on floating objects recorded most of the incidental catch of dolphinfish, followed by unassociated sets, while dolphin-associated sets recorded the lowest catch. Almost 80% of the total catch was fished in waters with sea-surface temperatures between 25°C and 28°C. The mean size of dolphinfish was significantly different (H 2,777 =12.8, p <0.05) by set type, but the smallest specimens caught were associated with floating objects. Among sets associated with floating objects, the incidental catch of dolphinfish was greatest in sets on logs, branches, etc. (PALO sets), though those on FADs (fish-aggregating devices) were the most numerous in the central EPO. Municipal waste is a potential source of infection for Toxoplasma gondii as it may contain contaminated meat with parasite tissue cysts and cat excrement with parasite oocysts. Therefore, we sought to determine the prevalence of T. gondii infection and associated characteristics in two populations exposed to municipal solid waste in Durango, Mexico. Ninety waste pickers and 83 waste workers of Durango City, Mexico were examined for T. gondii infection. They were tested for anti- T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies using enzyme-linked immunoassays. In addition, socio-demographic and behavioural characteristics from each participant were obtained. Nineteen (21.1%) of the 90 waste pickers and seven (8.4%) of the 83 waste workers were positive for anti- T. gondii IgG antibodies. The difference in prevalence among the groups was statistically significant ( P =0.03). Waste pickers aged 31–50 years showed a significantly higher prevalence (40.9%) than waste workers of the same age group (2.9%, P < 0.001). Anti- T. gondii IgM antibodies were found in two (2.2%) of the waste pickers but in none of the waste workers. The seroprevalence of T. gondii was significantly higher in workers of the waste transfer station (25.0%) than in drivers or helpers of waste vehicles (2.5%) ( P =0.03). Multivariate analysis showed that T. gondii infection was associated with consuming food found in the garbage [adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 4.4; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.6–11.8] and with lack of education (adjusted OR = 3.2; 95% CI 1.1–8.8). From this study, we conclude: (i) waste pickers may represent a risk group for T. gondii infection; (ii) lack of education might be a contributing factor for T. gondii infection; (iii) the higher the exposure to garbage, the higher the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection; (iv) Eating food products from the garbage may represent an important route for T. gondii infection. Objective: To assess Mexican physicians' knowledge about the human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer and their opinions and practices related to screening, managing, and counselling women on these topics. Methodology: In August 2002 we surveyed 1206 general practitioners (GPs) and obstetricians- gynaecologists (Ob-Gyns) working in a nationally representative sample of public and private facilities in urban Mexico. Eligible physicians completed a self administered questionnaire. We conducted a weighted analysis and used x² tests to compare GPs and Ob-Gyns on outcome variables. Results: 76% of recruited physicians responded to the survey. 43% of Ob-Gyns had performed a hysterectomy in the last year to treat a case of CIN I or II. With respect to HPV, while 80% of respondents identified the virus as the principal cause of cervical cancer, many lacked detailed knowledge about this association. Ob-Gyns were more likely than GPs to have heard about specific oncogenic strains of HPV (p<0.001). Nearly all respondents thought that women should be informed that HPV causes cervical cancer; nevertheless, physicians believed that positioning cervical cancer as a sexually transmitted infection (STI) could cause problems in partner relationships (60%), confusion (40%), and unnecessary anxiety among women (32%). Conclusions: Mexican physicians support patient education on the HPV-cervical cancer link. However, findings suggest the need to present clear messages to women (emphasising, for example, that only certain types of HPV are oncogenic), to consider the conflicts such information might create for couples, and to further educate physicians about this topic and about overall cervical cancer screening and treatment protocols. Objectives: People in developing countries often seek medical advice for common ailments from pharmacies. As one example, pharmacists routinely diagnose and treat symptomatic sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We aimed to assess the quality of advice provided in Mexico City pharmacies by presenting hypothetical STI related syndromes and recording pharmacy attendants' suggested diagnoses and treatments.Methods: We interviewed the first available attendant in each of a 5% random sample of Mexico City's pharmacies. We inquired about the training, age, and experience of the attendant and about the typical number of clients coming for treatment of suspected STIs. After considering three hypothetical case studies, attendants recommended diagnoses, treatments, and, sometimes, physician follow up.Results: Most Mexico City "pharmacists" are actually clerks, with trained pharmacists rarely available on the premises. The average pharmacy attendant was 32 years old, with a median of 5 years' experience at that pharmacy, but very limited (if any) training. 62% reported seeing 10 or more clients with genital or vaginal infections per month. Depending on the case study, attendants provided appropriate diagnoses in 0-12% of cases, recommended appropriate treatments in 12-16% of cases, and suggested physician follow up for 26-67% of cases.Conclusions: In general, surveyed pharmacy personnel were unable to diagnose accurately or offer appropriate treatment advice when presented with classic, common STI symptoms. Given the volume of clients seeking advice from this source, training pharmacy attendants could significantly help to reduce the burden of disease associated with STIs in Mexico City. The concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were measured in muscle tissue of Coryphaena hippurus captured in the southern Gulf of California to determine inter-annual variations and their relation with environmental parameters for the period 2006–2015; additionally, health risk to consumers was assessed according to levels of studied elements and rate of fish consumption in northwest Mexico. During 2014 and 2015 the levels of As, Cd, Cu, and Zn were significantly lower than the rest of the years; in the case of As, it was also significantly lower in 2010. Oceanic Niño Index was negatively correlated with Zn concentrations in fish, while sea surface temperature was negatively correlated with Zn, Pb and Cd concentrations in dolphinfish. The simultaneous occurrence of the analyzed elements in muscle of dolphinfish indicated that health effects on consumers are not likely to occur; nevertheless, fishermen with elevated fish consumption might be at risk. • Levels of Cd, Cu, and Zn were significantly lower during 2014 and 2015. • Cu correlated negatively with fork length and weight of fish. • Zn in fish correlated negatively with Oceanic Niño Index. • Hazard quotients for As and Cd were more elevated than the rest of the elements. The prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii was determined in sera from 105 domestic cats from Durango City, Mexico. Using a modified agglutination test, antibodies to this parasite were found in 21% of the 105 cats, with titers of 1:25 in 3 cats, 1:50 in 4 cats, 1:200 in 5 cats, 1:400 in 2 cats, 1:800 in 2 cats, 1:1,600 in 4 cats, and 1:3,200 or higher in 2 cats. Cats older than 1 yr had a significantly higher frequency of infection than that found in cats younger than 0.5 yr (41 vs. 13.2%, respectively; odds ratio = 4.55; 95% CI = 1.24-17.18; P = 0.01). Overall, the seroprevalence of T. gondii antibodies in cats in Durango, Mexico, is much lower compared with those reported in other countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum are structurally similar parasites, with many hosts in common. The prevalence of antibodies to T. gondii and N. caninum was determined in sera from dogs from Durango City, Mexico. Using a modified agglutination test, antibodies to T. gondii were found in 52 (51 .5%) of the 101 dogs with titers of 1:25 in 27, 1:50 in 11, 1:100 in 5, 1:200 in 4, 1:400 in 2, 1:800 in 2, and 1:3,200 or higher in 1. Antibodies to N. caninum were determined by the indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and the Neospora sp. agglutination test (NAT). Two of the 101 dogs had N. caninum antibodies; these dogs did not have T. gondii antibodies, supporting the specificity of the tests used. The N. caninum antibody titers of the 2 dogs were: 1:400 by IFAT and 1:200 by NAT in 1, and 1:25 by NAT and IFAT in the other. Patterns of genetic structure among marine populations involve a variety of dispersal mechanisms and spatial scales. Pelagic species, such as the dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus, epitomize the open and continuous nature of the marine environment due to their extensive migrations. Many studies have revealed that oceanic pelagic species tend to be genetically homogeneous over local and often extended geographic scales and only show levels of differentiation among extreme localities or ocean basins. Here we present genetic data suggesting genetic heterogeneity in the dolphinfish at geographic scales much smaller than those predicted by those generalizations. Mitochondrial NADH1 gene RFLPs revealed a highly significant (ΦST = 0.029, P = 0.004, AMOVA) molecular genetic structure among fish from Baja California Sur (BCS), Sinaloa and Hawaii, consistent with heterogeneous haplotype frequencies (P = 0.014, exact test of genetic differentiation) and a depressed molecular diversity in fish sampled off BCS. Environmental changes have been associated with natural climatic variability or human activity. Water resources management is, perhaps, the most drastic change observed in the coastal environment. However, external forcings such as the El Niño event have important implications in the global and regional hydrological balance. These environmental changes have an impact on the density and biomass of the ichthyofauna in the Terminos Lagoon (TL) for the past 30 years, presumably, associated with variations in the temperature and surface salinity of the sea. Therefore, in the present study, δ18O was quantified in otoliths of two important species due to their dominance: Stellifer lanceolatus and Eucinostomus gula , and to understand the environmental changes reflected in both species. The δ18O was analyzed in otoliths of these two species captured in 1998/1997, 2006/2007 and 2016/2017 and were compared with in situ temperature and salinity data. Sea surface temperature and salinity increased by 2 °C and 9, respectively, between 1997 and 2017. Stellifer lanceolatus δ18O values was in isotopic equilibrium with seawater calcite; while, E. gula is not in isotopic equilibrium. The δ18O of S. lanceolatus and E. gula varied significantly with the increase in salinity (R2 = 0.8987 and R2 = −0.2964) and not with the sea surface temperature. S. lanceolatus is an excellent bioindicator of changes in sea surface salinity in this region of the Gulf of Mexico. • δ18O in Stellifer lanceolatus was in isotopic equilibrium with seawater calcite. • δ18O in Eucinostomus gula wasn't in isotopic equilibrium with seawater calcite. • δ18O of both species varied significantly with the increase in salinity. • S. lanceolatus is an excellent bioindicator of changes in salinity. The population has aged; there is a greater risk of osteoporosis and hip fracture. We describe the standards of care for hip fractures in various hospitals of Mexico. A total of 1042 subjects participated. Its incidence is high, and it is expected to increase due to aging in our country. International guidelines provide standardized recommendations for the care of people with hip fractures, while hip fracture registries provide a means to compare care with local, national, and international clinical standards and establish improvement processes., Objective: Describe the standards of care for hip fractures in various hospital centers of the Mexican Social Security Institute., Methods: This was an observational, multicenter, longitudinal, and descriptive study. It included 24 hospital centers in Mexico. Informed consent was obtained. Data were recorded during the hospital stay, epidemiological data, and management, and follow-up was carried out 30 and 120 days after discharge. The information was analyzed using SPSS version 22.0., Results: A total of 1042 subjects aged 79.5 ± 7.6 years participated, mostly women (n = 739; 70.9%) from the community (n = 1,021; 98.0%) and with functional independence (Barthel 80.9 ± 22.2). The transfer time to the emergency room was 4.6 ± 14.6 days. Pertrochanteric hip fracture was the most common (n = 570, 54.7%). The most common type of procedure was dynamic hip screw (DHS) (n = 399; 40.1%). Documented thromboprophylaxis was granted in 91.5% (n = 953) and antibiotic prophylaxis in 53.0% (n = 552) of the patients. The goal of 36 h for the surgical procedure was achieved in 7.6% of the subjects (n = 76), with the most frequent cause being a delay in scheduling (n = 673, 67.6%). The mean time from emergency room to surgery was 7.8 ± 7.0 days. The acute mortality rate was 4.3%. Secondary pharmacologic prevention upon discharge occurred in 64.2% of patients. At 30 days, 370 subjects (37.1%) were lost to follow-up, with a mortality of 3%, while at 120 days, 166 subjects (27.8%) were lost, with a mortality of 2.8%., Conclusion: In the hospital centers where the study was carried out, there are still no standards of care for hip fractures, which makes it necessary to rethink the care for this population group through a strategy focused on meeting those standards., (© 2024. Background: The aging population prompts studying risk factors and markers to predict healthy aging. Telomere length is a promising candidate for assessing various age-related traits., Aim of the Study: To investigate the association between physical performance and telomere length., Methods: We enrolled 323 older Mexican adults from the "Cohort of Obesity, Sarcopenia, and Frailty of Older Mexican Adults" affiliated with the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social and assessed their physical performance using the Short Physical Performance Battery, dividing participants into low (≤7) and high (>7) groups. Absolute telomere length was determined by qPCR, and individuals were classified into short (≤4.22 kb) and long (>4.22 kb) groups. We calculated the mean and adjusted mean, considering sex and age, among others, with 95% CI. We estimated the effect size between physical performance and telomere length using Cohen's d for unequal group sizes and calculated the odds ratio for physical performance based on telomere length., Results: Participants with low physical performance had significantly shorter telomeres (mean 4.1 4.4 4.7 kb, adjusted mean 3.5 4.0 4.5 kb, p <0.001), while those with high physical performance exhibited longer telomeres (mean 5.5 5.7 5.9 kb, adjusted mean 4.7 5.3 5.8 kb, p <0.001), with a medium-to-high telomere length effect size (d = 0.762). The odds of low physical activity increased 2.1 3.6 6.1 -fold per kb of telomere attrition (adjOR 1.7 3.3 6.3 , p <0.001)., Conclusion: Decreased physical function is associated with shorter telomere length. COVID-19 has been contained; however, the side effects associated with its infection continue to be a challenge for public health, particularly for older adults. On the other hand, epigenetic status contributes to the inter-individual health status and is associated with COVID-19 severity. Nevertheless, current studies focus only on severe COVID-19. Considering that most of the worldwide population developed mild COVID-19 infection. In the present exploratory study, we aim to analyze the association of mild COVID-19 with epigenetic ages (HorvathAge, HannumAge, GrimAge, PhenoAge, SkinAge, and DNAmTL) and clinical variables obtained from a Mexican cohort of older adults. We found that all epigenetic ages significantly differ from the chronological age, but only GrimAge is elevated. Additionally, both the intrinsic epigenetic age acceleration (IEAA) and the extrinsic epigenetic age acceleration (EEAA) are accelerated in all patients. Moreover, we found that immunological estimators and DNA damage were associated with PhenoAge, SkinBloodHorvathAge, and HorvathAge, suggesting that the effects of mild COVID-19 on the epigenetic clocks are mainly associated with inflammation and immunology changes. In conclusion, our results show that the effects of mild COVID-19 on the epigenetic clock are mainly associated with the immune system and an increase in GrimAge, IEAA, and EEAA., (© 2024. Introduction: The end of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been declared by the World Health Organization on May 5, 2023. Several vaccines were developed, and new data is being published about their effectiveness. However, the clinical trials for the vaccines were performed before the Omicron variant appeared and there are population groups where vaccine effectiveness still needs to be tested. The overarching goal of the present study was to analyze the effects of COVID-19 vaccination before and after the Omicron variant in patients considering comorbidities in a population from Nuevo Leon, Mexico., Methods: Epidemiological COVID-19 data from the Mexican Social Security Institute were collected from 67 hospitals located in northeastern Mexico, from July 2020 to May 2023, and a total of 669,393 cases were compiled, 255,819 reported a SARS-CoV-2 positive reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) test or a positive COVID-19 antigen rapid test., Results: Before Omicron (BO, 2020-2021), after 14 days of two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, BNT162b2 and ChAdOx1 vaccines were effective against infection in non-comorbid and all comorbid subgroups, whereas after Omicron (AO, 2022- 2023) there was no significant effectiveness against infection with none of the vaccines. Regarding hospitalization BO, BNT162b2, ChAdOx1, CoronaVac and mRNA-1273 significantly protected non-comorbid patients whereas BNT162b2, ChAdOx1, and mRNA-1273, protected all comorbid subgroups against hospitalization. AO, BNT162b2, ChAdOx1, CoronaVac and mRNA-1273 were effective against hospitalization in non-comorbid patients whereas for most comorbid subgroups BNT162b2, ChAdOx1 and CoronaVac were effective against hospitalization. Non-comorbid patients were protected against death as an outcome of COVID-19 during the BO period with most vaccines whereas a reduction in effectiveness was observed AO with mRNA-1273 vaccines in patients with hypertension, and diabetes mellitus., Discussion: BO, COVID-19 vaccines were effective against infection, hospitalization, and death whereas AO, COVID-19 vaccines failed to protect the population from COVID-19 infection. Background: Diabetes education is an integral part of the treatment for the metabolic control of patients with diabetes. The use of the Internet as a tool for diabetes education, as well as its acceptance, is still under study., Aim: To assess the usability of the educational website "I understand my diabetes" designed for patients with type 2 diabetes attending primary care clinics., Material and Method: A cross-sectional study was done in 110 patients with type 2 diabetes from two family medicine clinics, each of whom was assigned a user account on the educational website "Entiendo mi diabetes." The web site assigned a user name and password to each patient. They were able to access the educational website at home. After a 15-day review period, participants were asked to evaluate usability using the Computer System Usability Questionnaire. Additionally, we developed an eight-item questionnaire usability focusing on diabetes care. Sociodemographic data, blood pressure, and anthropometric measurements were recorded. Glucose levels and lipid profiles were also measured., Results: The patients with diabetes had a mean age of 52.7 years and a median of 5 years since they were diagnosed with diabetes. The website received a good usability rating from 89.1% of participants, with favorable assessments in all three dimensions: 87.3% for information, 85.5% for quality, and 88.2% for interface. Regarding usability specifically for diabetes care, 98.2% rated it as having good usability., Conclusion: The website for education about the disease in patients "I understand my diabetes" had an adequate usability evaluation by patients, so they also considered it very useful for diabetes care. Although primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) is the treatment of choice in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), challenges may arise in accessing this intervention for certain geodemographic groups. Pharmacoinvasive strategy (PIs) has demonstrated comparable outcomes when delays in pPCI are anticipated, but real-world data on long-term outcomes are limited. The aim of the present study was to compare long-term outcomes among real-world patients with STEMI who underwent either PIs or pPCI. This was a prospective registry including patients with STEMI who received reperfusion during the first 12 hours from symptom onset. The primary objective was cardiovascular mortality at 12 months according to the reperfusion strategy (pPCI vs PIs) and major cardiovascular events (cardiogenic shock, recurrent myocardial infarction, and congestive heart failure), and Bleeding Academic Research Consortium type 3 to 5 bleeding events were also evaluated. A total of 799 patients with STEMI were included; 49.1% underwent pPCI and 50.9% received PIs. Patients in the PIs group presented with more heart failure on admission (Killip-Kimbal >I 48.1 vs 39.7, p = 0.02) and had a lower proportion of pre-existing heart failure (0.2% vs 1.8%, p = 0.02) and atrial fibrillation (0.25% vs 1.2%, p = 0.02). No statistically significant difference was observed in cardiovascular mortality at the 12-month follow-up (hazard ratio for PIs 0.74, 95% confidence interval 0.42 to 1.30, log-rank p = 0.30) according to the reperfusion strategy used. The composite of major cardiovascular events (hazard ratio for PIs 0.98, 95% confidence interval 0.75 to 1.29, p = 0.92) and Bleeding Academic Research Consortium type 3 to 5 bleeding rates were also comparable. A low socioeconomic status, Killip-Kimball >2, age >60 years, and admission creatinine >2.0 mg/100 ml were predictors of the composite end point after multivariate analysis. Mexico is an important producer/exporter of cattle and cattle products. In the last decade, an increase in antibiotic resistance in E. coli pathotype strains from livestock environments has been reported. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and antibiotic resistance profiles of E. coli pathotype strains from the feces of beef or dairy cattle reared in the states of Aguascalientes (AG, central) and Nuevo Leon (NL, northeastern) in Mexico. One hundred and ten fecal samples were collected (beef cattle-AG = 30; dairy cattle-AG = 20; beef cattle-NL = 30; dairy cattle-NL = 30). From these, E. coli was isolated using selective/differential media and confirmed on chromogenic media. Multiplex PCR was used to identify diarrheagenic E. coli, and the Kirby-Bauer technique was used to determine the antimicrobial susceptibilities. All the animals harbored E. coli, and pathotypes were found in 34 animals from both, beef and dairy cattle, mainly from Aguascalientes. Of the positive samples, 31 harbored a single E. coli pathotype, whereas three samples harbored two different pathotypes; EHEC was the most prevalent, followed by EPEC, ETEC, and EIEC or the combination of two of them in some samples. Most pathotype strains (19/37) were isolated from beef cattle. Neither the animals' productive purpose (beef or dairy cattle) (r = 0.155) nor the geographic regions (Aguascalientes or Nuevo Leon) (r = -0.066) had a strong positive correlation with the number of E. coli pathotype strains. However, animals reared in Aguascalientes had up to 8.5-fold higher risk of harboring E. coli pathotype strains than those reared in Nuevo Leon. All pathotype strains were resistant to erythromycin, tetracycline, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and all dairy cattle pathotype strains were further resistant to five β-lactams (χ 2 , P = 0.017). Foodborne disease outbreaks linked to consumption of vegetables have been often attributed to human enteric viruses, such as Norovirus (NoV), Hepatitis A virus (HAV), and Rotavirus (RoV). Information about the occurrence of these viruses is scarce in many fresh-producing countries. Viral contamination detection of indicators, such as somatic coliphages, could indirectly reflect the presence of viral pathogens, being a valuable tool for better viral risk assessment in food industry. This study aimed to establish the occurrence and correlation of foodborne viruses and somatic coliphages in leafy greens in northern Mexico. A total of 320 vegetable samples were collected, resulting in 80 composite rinses, 40 of lettuce and 40 of parsley. Somatic coliphages were determined using the EPA 1602 method, while foodborne viruses (HAV, RoV, NoV GI, and GII) were determined by qPCR. The occurrence of RoV was 22.5% (9/40, mean 2.11 log gc/g) in lettuce and 20% (8/40, mean 1.91 log gc/g) in parsley. NoV and HAV were not detected in any samples. Somatic coliphages were present in all lettuce and parsley samples, with mean levels of 1.85 log PFU/100 ml and 2.28 log PFU/100 ml, respectively. Spearman analysis established the correlation of somatic coliphages and genomic copies of RoV, resulting in an r 2 value of - 0.026 in lettuce and 0.349 in parsley. Although NoV or HAV were undetected in the samples, the presence of RoV is a matter of concern as leafy greens are usually eaten raw, which poses a potential risk of infection., (© 2024. Background: The most common traumatic injury among older individuals worldwide is hip fracture. Higher incidence after 70 years old and women (80-85%). Hospital discharges in Mexico have little evidence., Objective: Describe hospital discharges from hip fractures in the Mexican public health system from 2013 to 2022., Material and Methods: A descriptive study using open data on hospital discharges from the Mexican public health system from 2013-2022, available by the General Direction of Health Information of the Secretary of Health, focused on discharge reports for hip fractures in people aged ≥ 60 years and any sex. The study describes individual variables, hospital discharge, and the federal entities where health care was provided., Results: Between 2013 and 2022, there have been 230,060 (2.11%) discharges due to hip fractures in people aged ≥ 60 years within the Mexican public health system; the highest concentration in patients with ≥ 80 years old and women (69.2%). Microorganisms naturally colonize rock-based materials in outdoor environments, thereby contributing to their degradation. Fungi, especially in tropical environments with abundant water and favorable temperatures, play a significant role in biodegradation. However, many aspects of the microorganism-stone interaction, including fungal colonization dynamics and the impact of treatment applications, remain unclear. This study conducted a four-year in-situ evaluation of fungal community dynamics on limestone surfaces in the Temple of the Warriors at the Chichén Itzá archaeological site in Mexico, focusing on cleaning and treatment using nanoparticles (NPs). These NPs included zinc oxide (ZnO) and CaZn 2 (OH) 6 ·2H 2 O (CZ)-based NPs synthesized via sol-gel (CZ-SG) and mechanochemical methods (CZ-MC), as well as CZ/Ca(OH) 2 -based products (CZ:Ca-SG). The microbial colonization cover was assessed using colorimetric measurements, and the surface was sampled for fungal community isolation and identification. The results demonstrated significant impacts of cleaning and nanomaterial applications on cultivable fungal communities (melanized filamentous, hyaline, and microcolonial fungi), altering composition, dynamics, and stone surface coloration. In particular, ZnO NPs caused 50 % decline in fungal species and individuals, whereas CZ:Ca-SG NPs displaced most species, indicating effective inhibition of the cultivable fungal community. Microcolonial fungi (MCF), known for their tolerance to withstand harsh environmental conditions, were the only fungal group found in the CZ:Ca-SG treatment. In contrast, CZ-SG and CZ-MC increased the abundance of melanized species, resulting in darkening and reduced color intensity. This study highlights the importance of microcolonial fungi that are tolerant to cleaning and coating procedures in the preservation of stone cultural heritage. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were assessed in sediments (n = 7) collected from the mouth of the Balsas River, Pacific Coast, Mexico. The total PAH levels ranged between 142.1 and 3944.07 μg kg -1 in the summer and 137.65-3967.38 μg kg -1 in the winter, probably reflecting the anthropogenic activities of the region. Calculation of the four analytical ratios of [Anthracene/(Anthracene + Phenanthrene)]: [Fluoranthene/(Fluoranthene + Pyrene)], [Fluoranthene/Pyrene: Fluoranthene/(Fluoranthene + Pyrene)], [Indeno [123-cd]Pyrene/(Indeno [123-cd]Pyrene + Benzo [ghi]Perylene)]: [Benzo [a]anthracene/(Benzo [a]Anthracene + Chrysene)], and [Anthracene/Phenanthrene]: [Fluoranthene/(Fluoranthene + Pyrene)] revealed a mixed PAH source, from petroleum and biomass combustion. Significant statistical correlations (r 2  = 0.90) between the 4 and 5 ringed PAHs denote that adsorption is the principal mechanism for accumulation in sedimentary archives. Ecotoxicological indices (Mean Effect Range Medium Quotient and Mean Probable Effect Level Quotient) indicated moderate pollution with adverse biological impacts on ambient benthonic organisms. The calculations of Toxicity Equivalent Quotient and Mutagen Equivalent Quotient values proposed that the region is highly polluted by mutagenic and carcinogenic PAH compounds. The genotoxic evaluation of Lutjanus guttatus (Spotted rose snapper) presented significant DNA damage and discrepancies in Ethoxyresorufin-O-Deethylase activity. There is the notion that dysregulation of executive function (EF), which disrupts behavior and cognitive processes, may explain the emotional impairment which leads to increasing sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) intake. We aimed to test whether anxiety and depression mediate the association between self-reported problems in EF and sugar sweetened beverage intake in Mexican adults between 18-40 years. An open survey advertised as a 'mental health and sugar sweetened beverages study' was conducted, participants were recruited through Facebook ads. Males and females, between 18-40 years, able to read and write, and currently residing in Mexico were included. We analyzed data using causal mediation analysis with latent variables using a structural equation modelling framework. Significant indirect effects were found for somatic symptoms of depression (β = 6.601, SE = 2.657, p < .05) and anxiety (β = .679, SE =.334, p < .05). In depression model no significant direct effects of EF were found in the depression model, however they were found in the anxiety model (β = 1.335 SE =.566, p < .05). Somatic symptoms of depression were a total mediator, and anxiety a partial mediator. The results suggest that EF increased the probability of emotional symptoms, which led to a higher consumption of SBBs.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to global social confinement that had a significant impact on people's lives. This includes changes such as increased loneliness and isolation, changes in sleep patterns and social habits, increased substance use and domestic violence, and decreased physical activities. In some cases, it has increased mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder., Objective: The objective of this study is to analyze the living conditions that arose during social confinement in the first wave of COVID-19 within a group of volunteers in Mexico City., Methods: This is a descriptive and cross-sectional analysis of the experiences of volunteers during social confinement from 20 March 2020 to 20 December 2020. The study analyzes the impact of confinement on family life, work, mental health, physical activity, social life, and domestic violence. A maximum likelihood generalized linear model is used to determine the association between domestic violence and demographic and health-related factors., Results: The findings indicate that social confinement had a significant impact on the participants, resulting in difficulties within families and vulnerable conditions for individuals. Gender and social level differences were observed in work and mental health. Physical activity and social life were also modified. We found that suffering from domestic violence was significantly associated with being unmarried ( OR = 1.4454, p-value = 0.0479 ), lack of self-care in feeding habits ( OR = 2.3159, p-value = 0.0084 ), and most notably, having suffered from a symptomatic COVID-19 infection ( OR = 4.0099, p-value = 0.0009 ). Despite public policy to support vulnerable populations during confinement, only a small proportion of the studied population reported benefiting from it, suggesting areas for improvement in policy., Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that social confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the living conditions of people in Mexico City. The AcrAB-TolC efflux pump (EP) confers multidrug resistance to Salmonella enterica , a major etiological agent of foodborne infections. Phytochemicals that inhibit the functions of AcrAB-TolC EP present ideal candidates for reversal of antibiotic resistance. Progressive technological advancements, have facilitated the development of computational methods that offer a rapid low-cost approach to screen and identify phytochemicals with inhibitory potential against EP. In this study, 71 phytochemicals derived from plants used for medicinal purposes in Mexico were screened for their potential as inhibitors of Salmonella AcrB protein using in silico approaches including molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Consequently, naringenin, 5-methoxypsoralen, and licarin A were identified as candidate inhibitors of AcrB protein. The three phytochemicals bound distal/deep pocket (DP) and hydrophobic trap (HPT) residues of AcrB protein critical for interactions with inhibitors, with estimated binding free energies of -95.5 kJ/mol, -97.4 kJ/mol, and -143.8 kJ/mol for naringenin, 5-methoxypsoralen, and licarin A, respectively. Data from the 50 ns MD simulation study revealed stability of the protein-ligand complex and alterations in the AcrB protein DP conformation upon binding of phytochemicals to the DP and HPT regions. Based on the estimated binding free energy and interactions with three out of five residues lining the hydrophobic trap, licarin A demonstrated the highest inhibitory potential, supporting its further application as a candidate for overcoming drug resistance in pathogens. Background: Plenty of evidence shows how social isolation and loneliness are associated with increased risk for numerous diseases and mortality. But findings about their interactive or combined effects on health outcomes and mortality remains inconclusive., Objective: Analyze the longitudinal association of loneliness, social isolation and their interactions, with the all-cause mortality among older adults in Mexico., Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted. Mexican adults older than 50 years were included. Data from the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS) in the 2015 and 2018 waves were used. The subjects were classified according to their level of loneliness and the presence of social isolation. Multivariate logistic regression analyzes were performed to determine the degree of association between loneliness and social isolation with all-cause mortality at a 3-year follow-up., Results: From the total sample of 11,713 adults aged 50 years or over, 707 (6%) did not survive, 42% presented loneliness, and 53% were classified as socially isolated. After multivariate adjustment only social isolation (OR = 1.30, 95%CI:1.03-1.64) was associated with all-cause mortality, loneliness (Mild: OR = 0.83, 95%CI:0.59-1.16; Severe: OR = 1.03, 95%CI:0.71-1.64), and the interaction between loneliness and social isolation were not associated with all-cause mortality., Conclusion: Social isolation, but not loneliness or their interaction, was associated with all-cause mortality in Mexican adults older than 50 years. Veterinary medicine and animal science (VMAS) students coexist in asocial, geographic, and economic context that influences personal and career decisions. The goal of this study was to analyze students' perceptions of Animal Welfare (AW) and World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) topics by gender, religion, and stage of study at the school of veterinary medicine in the northeastern Mexican border area. Survey response rate was 60% of VMAS student enrollment, which was divided in basic, intermediate, and advanced academic levels. Student respondents reported animal production followed by animals for companionship and wildlife appreciation as their job placement expectations after graduation. Students in the basic training stage rated AW in general practice to be more important compared with those in intermediate and advanced training (p < 0.005). Compared with intermediate and advanced level students, students at the basic level considered bioethics, sustainable food production, and OIE animal welfare topics more important (p < 0.05). Regarding gender differences, compared with male students, their female counterparts rated AW more important, depending on areas of work practice and OIE topics (p < 0.05).

Background: The third wave of COVID-19 in Mexico produced a high demand for hospital care, which is why it was created a multidisciplinary group to optimize decision-making: the Interinstitutional Command for the Health Sector (COISS, according to its initials in Spanish). So far, there is no scientific evidence of the COISS processes or their effect on the behavior of epidemiological indicators and the hospital care needs of the population in the context of COVID-19 in the entities involved., Objectives: To analyze the trend on epidemic risk indicators throughout the COISS group's management in the third wave of COVID-19 in Mexico., Material and Methods: Mixed study: 1) non-systematic review of information from technical documents issued by COISS, 2) secondary analysis of open-access institutional databases through the description of healthcare needs of cases notified with COVID-19 symptoms, and an ecological analysis by each Mexican state on the behavior of hospital occupancy, RT-PCR positivity, and COVID-19 mortality in two-time points., Results: The COISS activity in identifying states with epidemic risk generated actions aimed at a reduction in hospital occupancy of beds, positivity by RT-PCR, and mortality from COVID-19. Conclusions: The decisions of the COISS group reduced the indicators of epidemic risk. Epidemiological data indicate that Mexico holds the 19th place in cumulative cases (5506.53 per 100,000 inhabitants) of COVID-19 and the 5th place in cumulative deaths (256.14 per 100,000 inhabitants) globally and holds the 4th and 3rd place in cumulative cases and deaths in the Americas region, respectively, with Mexico City being the most affected area. Several modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors have been linked to a poor clinical outcome in COVID-19 infection; however, whether socioeconomic and welfare factors are associated with clinical outcome has been scanty addressed. This study tried to investigate the association of Social Welfare Index (SWI) with hospitalization and severity due to COVID-19. A retrospective analysis was conducted at the Centro Médico Nacional "20 de Noviembre"-ISSSTE, based in Mexico City, Mexico. A total of 3963 patients with confirmed or suspected COVID-19, registered from March to July 2020, were included, retrieved information from the Virology Analysis and Reference Unit Database. Demographic, symptoms and clinical data were analyzed, as well as the SWI, a multidimensional parameter based on living and household conditions. An adjusted binary logistic regression model was performed in order to compare the outcomes of hospitalization, mechanical ventilation requirement (MVR) and mortality between SWI categories: Very high (VHi), high (Hi), medium (M) and low (L). The main findings show that lower SWI were independently associated with higher probability for hospital entry: VHi vs. Hi vs. M vs. L-SWI (0 vs. +0.24 [OR = 1.24, CI 95% 1.01-1.53] vs. +0.90 [OR = 1.90, CI 95% 1.56-2.32] vs. 0.73 [OR = 1.73, CI 95% 1.36-2.19], respectively); Mechanical Ventilation Requirement: VHi vs. M vs. L-SWI (0 vs. +0.45 [OR = 1.45, CI 95% 1.11-1.87] vs. +0.35 [OR = 1.35, CI 95% 1.00-1.82]) and mortality: VHi vs. Hi vs. M (0 vs. +0.54 [OR = 1.54, CI 95% 1.22-1.94] vs. +0.41 [OR = 1.41, CI 95% 1.13-1.76]). We concluded that SWI was independently associated with the poor clinical outcomes in COVID-19, beyond demographic, epidemiological and clinical characteristics.

A longitudinal study, from 2018 to 2021, identified impacts on the nutritional and functional status of older adults when face-to-face activities at a social assistance center in Mexico were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 71 older adults were evaluated at three different periods: 18 months prior, three months before the pandemic, and 12 months after the onset of the pandemic. Seventy-one older adults completed follow up. Anthropometric measurements, dietary intake, physical tests, and health screening for malnutrition, dependence, and physical frailty, were evaluated. There was a significant decrease in lean body mass and body water in the older adults assessed, in addition to a significant reduction in the frailty scale and gait speed. Finally, a significant reduction in ingested energy and several nutrients such as protein, and carbohydrates, was found, yet an increase in sugar and cholesterol intake was noted.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-coronavirus (CoV)-2 infection in children and adolescents primarily causes mild or asymptomatic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and severe illness is mainly associated with comorbidities. However, the worldwide prevalence of COVID-19 in this population is only 1%-2%. In Mexico, the prevalence of COVID-19 in children has increased to 10%. As serology-based studies are scarce, we analyzed the clinical features and serological response (SARS-CoV-2 structural proteins) of children and adolescents who visited the Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez (October 2020-March 2021). The majority were 9-year-old children without comorbidities who were treated as outpatients and had mild-to-moderate illness. Children aged 6-10 years and adolescents aged 11-15 years had the maximum number of symptoms, including those with obesity. Nevertheless, children with comorbidities such as immunosuppression, leukemia, and obesity exhibited the lowest antibody response, whereas those aged 1-5 years with heart disease had the highest levels of antibodies. The SARS-CoV-2 spike receptor-binding domain-localized peptides and M and E proteins had the best antibody response. In conclusion, Mexican children and adolescents with COVID-19 represent a heterogeneous population, and comorbidities play an important role in the antibody response against SARS-CoV-2 infection., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Scaphocephaly (SC) is defined as an elongation of the anteroposterior axis of the skull resulting from the abnormal fusion of the sagittal suture. This study describes the "Peau d'ours" technique and results for correcting SC. We conducted a consecutive and retrospective analysis of patients treated from 2011 to 2016. We evaluated the gender, age, and surgical outcomes. A total of 53 patients were enrolled with a mean age of 19 months old. The advantages of this technique are healthy coronal and lambdoid suture preservation and symmetrical parietal bone flap opening. This technique is safe and simple to reproduce, allowing good surgical outcomes with a low incidence of secondary craniosynostosis. Background and Aim: Uric acid (UA) is a product of the catabolism of purines, and its increase in blood may be related to the development of cardiometabolic diseases. Whether UA is the result or causal determinant of the appearance of risk factors for cardiometabolic disease is not yet known. UA levels among the young student population in San Luis Potosi have increased in recent years, which may be indicative of a serious future public health concern. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the association of sociodemographic, lifestyle and cardiometabolic determinants with UA levels in children and adolescents in San Luis Potosí., Methods and Results: A total of 730 students (54.1% female and 45.9% male, 6-19 years old) participated in the study. The subjects attended one of five public schools located in San Luis Potosí. Venous blood samples were collected, blood serum was separated by centrifugation, and UA concentrations were measured with an automated analytical platform. UA was associated with most of the independent variables studied. It presented a positive correlation with body mass index (r = 0.363, p < 0.01). Male sex, socioeconomic status, total screen time, exercise, adequate sleep, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol explained 23%-39% (p < 0.001) of the variability of plasma concentrations of UA in children and adolescents., Conclusion: Early detection of these determinants will prevent future diseases. Background: Thiopurines are effectively prescribed for immune and oncology diseases but their toxicity leads to severe myelosuppression. Therefore, TPMT genetic variants have been used to adjust dosing for poor and intermediate metabolizers, significantly preventing adverse drug reactions. In 2018, the Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium included NUDT15 rs116855232 to also guide thiopurines dosing. This variant is not present in Caucasians but have been identified in 10% of Asian and Latin American populations. Despite research efforts to portrait the world's genetic variation, few studies include the investigation of NUDT15 in large samples., Methods: Fifteen NUDT15 and TPMT variants were retrieved for 1270 Mestizos and 20 Natives genotyped from previous studies using the GSA-Illumina microarray. After bioinformatic quality controls, genotypes were available for 12 variants, TPMT rs2842949, rs2842950, rs2842934, rs1800460, rs12201199, rs12663332, rs2518463, rs4449636, rs12529220, rs3931660, rs200591577, and NUD15 rs116855232. Allele frequencies and haplotypes were assessed using PLINK, R, and Haploview. Dosing inferences were described according to the Clinical Pharmacogenomics Implementation Consortium., Results: We report relevant populations differences in actionable TPMT*3B and NUDT15 rs116855232 as the allele frequency of the former is higher in Mestizos compared to Caucasians, and for the latter we report twofold and 1.35-fold higher allele frequencies in Natives and Mestizos compared to Mexicans from Los Angeles., Conclusions: TPMT*3B and NUDT15 rs116855232 actionable markers showed population differences that ought to be considered as dosing inferences highlight the relevance of routine genotyping of these variants for the prescription of thiopurines in Mexican populations., (© 2021. Background: Good sleep is essential for physical and mental health throughout life. However, there are few reports describing the sleep problems experienced by communitydwelling older people., Objective: To describe the prevalence of sleep disorders and their relationship with medical conditions in communitydwelling older people., Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study with 1678 older people (60 years and over) from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Mexico City. Sleep duration, sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, insomnia and risk of obstructive sleep apnea were evaluated, alongside with sociodemographic variables and medical conditions., Results: Participants self-reported an average sleep duration of 6.04 (± 1.5) hours per night, approximately half had poor sleep quality (49.1%), and 2 out of 10 experienced daytime sleepiness (19.1%); one third had insomnia (30.8%) and risk of obstructive sleep apnea (27.5%). A pattern of higher prevalence of sleep problems was observed in older adults with depression, with cognitive impairment, with difficulties in basic activities of daily living and in those taking medications for the nervous system., Conclusions: This study showed that older people sleep few hours, have low sleep quality, and have a high prevalence of sleep disorders. Background: To determine the association between oral health condition and development of frailty over a 12-month period in community-dwelling older adults., Methods: Population-based, case-cohort study derived from the Cohort of Obesity, Sarcopenia, and Frailty of Older Mexican Adults (COSFOMA) study, including data from years 2015 and 2016. Using latent class analysis, we determined the oral health condition of older adults with teeth (t 0 ), i.e., functional teeth, presence of coronal caries, root caries, periodontal disease, dental calculus, dental biofilm, root remains, xerostomia, and need for dental prosthesis. Edentulous was considered as a separate class. Criteria of the Frailty Phenotype (t 1 ) by Fried et al. were used: weight loss, self-report of exhaustion, walking speed, decreased muscle strength, and low physical activity. The presence of three or more criteria indicated a frail condition. The strength of the association (odds ratio, OR) between oral health condition and development of frailty was estimated through bivariate analysis. Multiple logistic regression was used to adjust for the other variables of study: sociodemographic data (sex, age, marital status, level of education, paid work activity, and living alone), comorbidities, cognitive impairment, depressive symptoms, nutritional status, and use of oral health services., Results: 663 non-frail older adults were evaluated, with a mean age of 68.1 years (SD ± 6.1), of whom 55.7% were women. In t 0 , a three-class model with an acceptable value was obtained (entropy = 0.796). The study participants were classified as: edentulous persons (6.9%); Class 1 = Acceptable oral health (57.9%); Class 2 = Somewhat acceptable oral health (13.9%); and Class 3 = Poor oral health (21.3%). In t 1 , 18.0% (n = 97) of participants developed frailty. Using Acceptable oral health (Class 1) as a reference, we observed that older adults with edentulism (OR 4.1, OR adjusted 2.3) and Poor oral health (OR 2.4, OR adjusted 2.2) were at an increased risk of developing frailty compared to those with Acceptable oral health., Conclusion: Older adults with edentulism and poor oral health had an increased risk of developing frailty over a 12-month period., (© 2021. Metagenomic and traditional paleolimnological approaches are suitable to infer past biological and environmental changes, however, they are often applied independently, especially in tropical regions. We combined both approaches to investigate Holocene Prokaryote and Eukaryote diversity and microbial metabolic pathways in ancient Lake Chalco, Mexico. Here, we report on diversity among a large number of lineages (36,722 OTUs) and functional diversity (27,636,243 non-clustered predicted proteins, and 6,144 annotated protein-family genes). The most abundant domain is Bacteria (81%), followed by Archaea (15%) and Eukarya (3%). We also determined the diversity of protein families and their relationship to metabolic pathways. The early Holocene (> 11,000 cal years BP) lake was characterized by cool, freshwater conditions, which later became warmer and hyposaline (11,000-6,000 cal years BP). We found high abundances of cyanobacteria, and fungi groups associated with mature forests in these sediments. Bacteria and Archaea include mainly anaerobes and extremophiles that are involved in the sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon cycles. We found evidence for early human impacts, including landscape modifications and lake eutrophication, which began ~ 6,000 cal years BP. Subsaline, temperate conditions were inferred for the past 5,000 years. Finally, we found nitrogen-fixing bacteria and protein-family genes that are linked to contaminated environments, as well as several fungal pathogens of crops in near-surface sediments.

Cantaloupes contaminated with pathogens have led to many high-profile outbreaks and illnesses. Since bacterial virulence genes (VGs) can act in tandem with antibiotic-resistance and mobile genetic elements, there is a need to evaluate these gene reservoirs in fresh produce, such as cantaloupes. The goal of this study was to assess the distribution of antibiotic-resistance, virulence, and mobile genetic elements genes (MGEGs) in cantaloupe farm environments. A total of 200 samples from cantaloupe melons ( n  = 99), farm workers' hands ( n  = 66), and production water ( n  = 35) were collected in México. Each sample was assayed for the presence of 14 antibiotic-resistance genes, 15 VGs, and 5 MGEGs by polymerase chain reaction. Our results indicated that tetracycline ( tetA and tetB ) (18% of cantaloupe, 45% of hand samples) and sulfonamide ( sul1 ) (30% of cantaloupe, 71% of hand samples) resistance genes were frequently detected. The colistin resistance gene ( mcr1 ) was detected in 10% of cantaloupe and 23% of farm workers' hands. Among VGs, Salmonella genes invA and spiA were the most abundant. There was a significantly higher likelihood of detecting antibiotic-resistance, virulence, and MGEGs on hands compared with water samples. These results demonstrate a diverse pool of antibiotic-resistance and VGs in cantaloupe production.
