The purpose of this article is to study the adaptations and representations from which four immigrant families, from different regions in India and settled in Tijuana (Mexico), recreate their religious practice. After belonging to a context where Hinduism is predominant, their religious practice becomes a minority when they migrate to Mexico. This situation identifies the negotiations between materiality and its relationship with spirituality on the part of believers themselves, since, without the intervention of a religious authority and in the absence of traditional temples in the place of arrival, families recreate the rituals at home. Following the methodological orientation of lived religion, we began by analyzing the materiality present in their household altars allowing us to study the processes of adaptation (changes and permanences) that take place when they move their daily lives from India to Mexico, specifically to the border between Tijuana and San Diego. We were also able to explore the emotions and meanings that individuals associate with the local elements, with which they continue their religious practice in a foreign country. As a result, the recreations through household altars reveal the elements that each individual values for his or her own religious practice. This article thus reflects on the practice of Hinduism in Tijuana, from a perspective centered on the believers themselves, in a context of religious autonomy as a consequence of migration. The article reflects on the production and mobilization of certain types of knowledge as alternatives to hegemonic knowledge, and/or to formal and institutionalized procedures. We employ the concept of socially productive knowledge and use this lens to reflect on the searches carried out by groups of relatives of the disappeared. How should family members use new knowledge to carry out their searches? These ways of knowing are at times through formal channels, and at other times not. Family members and collectives generate their own geographies of pain and terror, they place themselves in the territories to look for human remains, and they learn to decipher signs of context. This paper examines in-depth the root causes and consequences of Mexican forced displacement from a decolonial feminist perspective, emphasizing the intersections between the body and territory. The absence of quantitative and qualitative data on internal forced displacement in Mexico erases people and communities from the territory, making them invisible along the migratory routes and making them disappear on the map of contemporary geographies of terror. In this article, we focus on the embodied experiences of women, drawing upon extensive multi-sited binational research along the Mexico-US border. The article presents a specialized bibliography on the annihilation of bodies, geographies of terror, and places of memory in Mexico from 2006 to the present. More than 100,000 people are disappeared in Mexico, the urgency to find them has prompted groups to develop skills and knowledge to find their whereabouts and to conceive actions of resistance to oblivion and to appeal society to make its own their search and demand for justice. In this text I underline that the disappearance is also a discursive phenomenon where anonymity and criminalization of the victims of disappearance encourages the indifference and normalization of this crime; that the groups of victims generate counter-narratives that seek to subvert the hegemonic narrative about the disappeared and, based on three memory narratives, I propose that the counter-narratives in search of life seek to emphasize, not the disappearance, but the personality and daily moments of the absent people to generate resonance and build bridges of rapprochement towards those who are unaware of, or evade the depths of this crime in Mexico. This article is part of a larger project that focuses in part on the migration dynamics in large Mexican metropolitan areas or globalising cities. In particular, it develops a comparative analysis of the urbanised region of Puebla-Tlaxcala, the metropolis of Monterrey and Tijuana. All three metropolitan areas are important industrial centres that attract rural–urban as well as interstate migrations. Moreover, these urban centres are situated at routes used by migrants from Central and South America to get to the US. Yet, despite the increasing impact of migration(s) on urban areas, very little is known about its characteristics and municipal authorities have not identified inward or transmigration as issues of political importance. For our analysis we intend to map the different migrations through addressing the following question: How are migrations transforming the urban areas of Monterrey, Tijuana and Puebla-Tlaxcala and how are they inserted in and contributing to urban assemblages in these metropolitan zones? For this particular article we have chosen three distinct migratory groups to contrast: Germans in Puebla-Tlaxcala, Haitians in Tijuana and Indigenous populations in Monterrey. Regularization programmes for undocumented migrants are generally viewed as a form of transition from “illegality” to a secure legal status. Yet, as we argue in this article, in many countries, such as Mexico, this transition is often incomplete and reversible. This article discusses regularization programmes for undocumented migrants in Mexico before and after the introduction of the 2011 Migration Law and illustrates that the status migrants obtain is precarious, that is insecure and conditional upon their ability to meet requirements for status renewal. Focusing on Central Americans in Mexico, we suggest that many migrants have been unable to obtain or renew their status after new procedures were put in place in 2011. Coining the legality granted through Mexico’s regularization process “precarious legality”, we attribute it to the contradiction between Mexico’s stated respect for migrants’ human rights and the de facto commitment to immigration control. Return migrants engage in high rates of self-employment, which scholars commonly attribute to the accumulation of financial and human capital while working abroad. Central to this scholarship is the assumption that self-employment is positive and leads to upward economic mobility among return migrants. This scholarship is limited, however, because it relies on large surveys and cross-sectional census data that treat self-employment as a single unidimensional status measured at one point in time. To improve conceptualization and measurement of self-employment, we engage three bodies of research that have thus far had little cross-fertilization: the literature on work and self-employment in Latin America, the scholarship on return migration and self-employment, and developments in economic theories of international migration. Drawing on results from the first longitudinal analysis of the labor market trajectories of Mexican return migrants in a large urban area in central Mexico, we identify three types of self-employment--survivalist, temporary, and prosperous. To explain these divergent self-employment pathways, we draw on biographical narratives and identify two sets of mechanisms--human capital formation and life-course stage. Overall, our investigation of self-employment types suggests a complex relationship between international migration experiences and the labor market mobility of return migrants that cannot be understood without taking into consideration migrants' social and economic circumstances before, during, and after migration. Consequently, our study yields insights into economic theories of international migration and provides direction for future research on return migration and labor market reintegration. Mexico is one of the largest recipients of international remittances in the world. Although there is increasing evidence of return migration in the country, little is known about the ways in which the impact of remittances on voter turnout differs according to temporary (circular) and permanent forms of migration. This paper aims to contribute to the literature by examining the interactive effect between remittances and return migration. Using a series of quantitative analyses based on aggregate data for all Mexican municipalities that held municipal elections between 2010 and 2012 and participated in the 2012 presidential election, the analysis confirms that voter turnout rates are negatively related to the percentage of households that receive remittances in a municipality. However, it reveals that the negative effect of remittances on voter turnout decreases as the percentage of households with return migrants in a municipality increases. This result is valid across elections at the presidential and municipal levels. Since the 90s the revitalized economy of the called Nuevo New South has recruited Latin immigrants at unused pace and scale; simultaneously, around neoliberal restructuration processes, emerging accelerated f lows of people with an origin in Central and Southern Mexico were the response to the increased demand for cheap labor in Southeastern United States. Supported on information collected at the municipality of Pahuatlán, Puebla, as well as at the counties of Durham and Orange, North Carolina, is proposed in this article to analyze the interlocking of two female migration patterns and the women's unstable precarious enrollment into the restaurant and cleaning industry. At southhuasteca region in Mexico, the otomi have excelled for its cultural vitality, as well as some social and political activism that inf luences their interethnic relations, economic activities and daily life. One example is the effective transnational migrant circuit ranging from the South Huastecan to the East Coast of the United States, which have consolidated over three migratory waves with different stakeholders. In that vein, it is my interest to make a general outline on international migration dynamics of this group: who are the social actors involved, which are the characteristics of their mobility, filed ethnic networks and use of remittances. In this article, we examine the role of the festivals known as Guelaguetzas that are organized among communities of Oaxacan (Oaxaca, Mexico) immigrants settled in California (United States), as a key factor for their internal consolidation process. We argue that all cultural activities displayed in such festivals allow a greater appreciation of the reconfiguration processes linking the places of origin and destination. Furthermore, the organization of these festivals entails the creation of cultural spaces that allow a resignification of their contents by emphasizing three core elements of the social identity for these Oaxacan immigrants: the migrant condition, indigeneity and the pan-Oaxacan dimension. This article forms part of the research project The Field of Human Rights Defenders in Mexico. This time the author analyzes the evaluation carried out in Mexico by the Committee of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, in which the Mexican State and Civil Society submitted their reports on compliance with the Convention. In this exercise, the author highlights three groups that suffer different types of discrimination within the country: the indigenous peoples, the migrant population, and people of African descent in Mexico. This article applies social network analysis methods to recent internal migration studies for two regions in northern Mexico. Using data from 1995 Conteo (Census) and 2015 EIC (Intercensal Survey), the findings reveal that there are significant differences between both regions. In 1995, the northwestern region centrality indicator was more concentrated than for the northeastern region. The objective of this study is to review and compare the educational systems in the United States and Mexico, with a focus on the attention paid to immigrant children. The research is of a documentary type. The results indicate that in spite of both countries' interest in offering elementary education, exclusion is reflected in the scholastic failure of students who do not adjust to established parameters. In this sense, we can conclude that educational processes, and specifically the programs designed for teaching immigrant children in the United States, tend to exclude and segregate these children because of their cultural and social differences. The Mexican educational system, on the other hand, requires students to adapt to school practices that are univocal and centralized, thus preventing education from covering students' needs and expectations. ABSTRACT Migration often leads to new transnational patterns of consumption, because migrants create new ways in which they, and their families, relate to material objects. The literature on migration and materiality has documented migrants constructing and reconstructing their identities, and creating relationships based on the acquisition of material artifacts. However, little is known about the affective component involved in the construction of migrants' houses, especially when they are unfinished. In this article I provide an ethnographic analysis of the relationship between unfinished houses, migration trajectories, familial obligations, and future aspirations of migrants and their families in Oaxaca, Mexico. Unfinished migrant houses populate the landscape of Oaxacan migrant communities as a reminder of the difficulties of migration. They also give hope to the families of migrants that dream of seeing their children return to a finished house. The house, and the process of building it, is entangled in emotions of presence and absence, success and failure, cruel optimism and hopeful aspirations. I argue that by looking at unfinished houses, and what they represent to migrants and to their families, we can expand our understanding of the relationship between undocumented migration, materiality, and the creation of multiple futures in uncertain contexts. This essay examines the conception of Hollywood stardom within the US Mexican press of the silent era, presenting a case study of Hollywood's transnational reception while proposing a reconsideration of the conception of Mexican in silent film. Critics and fans selectively Mexicanized Hollywood via stars like Ramón Novarro, framing them as positive emissaries of the nation. Nonetheless, journalists persistently reminded readers that their own aspirations of stardom were futile, discouraging them from migrating to Hollywood. The tensions evident in this distance between ordinary readers and exceptional stars hinged precisely upon stratifications within concurrent conceptions of the transnational Mexican community: gender, race, and class. Using a mixed methodology, we analyzed the association between recent immigration and school enrollment and age-grade gaps of migrant children between 8 and 15 years old from the United States to Baja California, as well as the experience of these children on their insertion in Mexican schools. The quantitative analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and a multinomial logistic model, based on the 2010 Population Census Microdata, which indicated that being a recent migrant considerably increases the risk of school non-enrollment and backwardness in Baja California. The qualitative analysis was based on a series of semi-structured interviews in Tijuana, Baja California, in order to understand the experience of school insertion. This analysis revealed that school continuity and permanence of migrant children coming from the United States has a close relationship with their socioeconomic status, therefore, with the economic, social and cultural capitals that families can use in favor of their children. In this research are presented new findings about the international emigration of the Mexican working class and the configuration of new inter-metropolitan areas connections. The increased presence of Canadians in Mexico has been apparent during the last two decades, especially in certain localities. The evolution and the most recent characteristics of this population was analized through comparative and complementary analysis of data from census information and immigration administrative records. The study results confirm the steady increase of Canadians in Mexico, as well as the diversification of this population in terms of migratory status and the areas and territories where it is present. Three main groups are identified: a) the employed population; b) retirees; and c) children under 16 years of age. Also notable are long-stay tourists, known as snowbirds. It is concluded that these immigration patterns are essentially associated with the integrationist model in North America (nafta), the opening to foreign investment and tourism in Mexico, the increase in the retired population in Canada, and the historical ties between the Mennonite communities in the two countries. The purpose of this paper is to determine the effect of labor income prior to migration on the income obtained by migrants in the destination economy, in the case of temporary Mexican migrants in the United States. The data used comes from the Emif Norte survey conducted between 1999 and 2009. High relative and absolute mobility is observed. Hourly income is multiplied by a factor of four in the destination economy, while the effect of a 10 % increase in labor income in Mexico results in less than a 1 % increase in labor income in the United States. Most studies about human trafficking touch on men as the main promoters, consumers, aggressors, and generators of the dynamics that spark, maintain, and reproduce it. However, little boys and adolescent and adult males can also be victims. In addition, there is little evidence of prevention work in this field based on a perspective of examining masculinities and with the purpose of transforming the sexist mentality. This article reviews the relationship between the migration of Central American women and the different forms of violence that accompany it. The author analyzes the three stages of the migratory process, departure, transit, and arrival, in order to show how violence is intertwined with all three. She shows how the lives of many women are marked by their different experiences of violence both in their communities of origin and in their destinations, and how these events are an important factor in their decision to migrate, to stay in some point along their way, or to return to their places of origin. The article presents a critical evaluation of the academic production on return migration from the United States to Mexico from 2008 to 2015. Our findings reveal that current research has been limited to studying the return of adult men and their insertion into labor markets, as well as the economic and demographic impacts of return. Analyses of migratory trajectories, integration, and experience of children, women and youth, and other studies with a focus on family dynamics are rare or virtually inexistent. This article proposes the use of the concept "subjective itinerary" as an analytical tool to examine the elements that constitute the return migration process of Mexican youth who belong to the 1.5 generation. A decade-long, five-state, mixed-method study of students encountered in Mexican schools with previous experience in the United States suggests there may be 400,000 such students in educación básica alone (elementary and middle school). The focus here, however, are data from 68 educators asked how they have responded to such students and their families. We offer an emergent taxonomy of teacher sensemaking about these students and teachers' responsibilities to respond. We then assert that because they are at the interface between a national institution (school) and transnational phenomena (migration), educators can provide key insight into how migration is shaped and negotiated. This article reports partial results of an anthropological study of Mexican minor migrants repatriated from the United States across the Tamaulipas/Texas border. The author's aim is to analyze some of the potential risks these young people face on their journey. The study is based on documentary sources and interviews with male and female teens between the ages of 14 and 17 from Southern and Central Mexico, who were housed at a Tamaulipas Center for the Care of Border Minors. Specifically, the study deals with risks such as being the possible victims of the region's organized crime, contacting coyotes (human smugglers), being taken by them to "safe houses," crossing the Rio Grande, and, finally, being detained by Border Patrol agents. Return migration to Mexico is a growing phenomenon. According to the National Migration Institute, 1.6 Million Mexicans have been repatriated between 2010 and 2014. As consequence, hundreds of thousands of families are coming back to Mexico with their children. These children (transnational students), have grown up and studied in the United States. Today, they have to adapt to the Mexican school system, study in a different language, and learn different contents and cultural codes. This paper adds a new perspective to this research from critical applied linguistics by focusing on the educational challenges monolithic schools have to face. First, it offers a demographic description of transnational students in Mexico. Second, it focuses on their identity and linguistic challenges. Third, it discusses possible theoretical solutions, such as the creation of third intercultural spaces (Bhabha, 1994; Unesco, 2006) by including students' funds of knowledge (González, Moll & Amanti, 2005) or multi-competences (Cook, 2002). Governments, civil society, and policymakers assert the potential of international migration to foster development and alleviate poverty. Often such claims are rooted in macroscale geopolitical analyses of migration and development, which mask the localized, uneven, and embodied ways family members 'left behind' bear the costs and subsidize the U.S./Mexico (inter)national integration project. Informed by feminist geopolitics, this article demonstrates how the left behind disproportionately bear the hidden costs of neoliberal restructuring and migration. We draw upon Mexican Migration Project ( MMP) ethnosurvey data to frame the narratives of migrant family members left behind. Narratives were constructed through in-depth interviews conducted in rural Veracruz. We conclude that in the absence of geographically specific examinations of the hidden costs associated with neoliberal development and migration it is possible that 'migration for development' programs and policies may exacerbate inequities that will perpetuate migration and further weaken Mexican origin communities. Despite high rates of out-migration, Mexican indigenous communities play a crucial role in biodiversity conservation. However, little is known about migrants' role in environmental management. This research brief explores the case of the Purépecha of San Pedro Ocumicho, Michoacán, and its transborder community in the Coachella Valley of California. We find that migrants maintain strong cultural ties to their community of origin. However, many are undocumented, are unable to access steady and well-paid employment, and would be unable to return to California were they to visit Mexico. Furthermore, government structures in Ocumicho are weak, providing few opportunities for migrants to contribute. These factors currently preclude migrants from influencing environmental decision making in their home community. Our findings point to the need for more comprehensive and longitudinal studies to better document and explain the variations in migrant support for environmental governance in their communities of origin. Discourse theory is useful for understanding the creation of borders, whether material or imaginary. This paper addresses three situations on Mexico's southern border between 2000 and 2015 in which elements of discourse theory may be applied. The outcomes were the following: 1) correlations may be made between the elements of the discourse moving from the northern to the southern border, but not in the opposite direction; 2) the process of securitising the discourse about migrants is continuous, and new securitising elements are regularly added; 3) an "elastic borders" phenomenon exists, where borders extend or retract, thereby creating new border regions; and 4) discourses around the southern border are constructed with more pejorative elements than the northern, despite the fact that crime rates are higher in the north. We use data from three rounds of the Mexican Family Life Survey to examine whether migrants in the United States returning to Mexico in the period 2005-2012 have worse health than those remaining in the United States. Despite extensive interest by demographers in health-related selection, this has been a neglected area of study in the literature on U.S.-Mexico migration, and the few results to date have been contradictory and inconclusive. Using five self-reported health variables collected while migrants resided in the United States and subsequent migration history, we find direct evidence of higher probabilities of return migration for Mexican migrants in poor health as well as lower probabilities of return for migrants with improving health. These findings are robust to the inclusion of potential confounders reflecting the migrants' demographic characteristics, economic situation, family ties, and origin and destination characteristics. We anticipate that in the coming decade, health may become an even more salient issue in migrants' decisions about returning to Mexico, given the recent expansion in access to health insurance in Mexico. Using a representative survey on a municipality in Mexico City, the article explores the relevance of both social networks and place attachments for US migration. By comparing households with and without migrants, the logistic regression models show that social networks make emigration more selective with respect 'education', but less selective regarding 'sex' and 'marital status'. These results shed new light on the mechanism through which social networks operate in urban settings. Even if a municipality that is very homogeneous in terms of poverty and employment opportunities, variations on the socio-demographic profile of the would-be emigrants to the USA are found depending on the household′s social networks. As for territorial variables, the general impression is one of placelessness, apart from attachment to the municipality, but here again social networks act as an intervening variable. In many developing countries property rights over rural land are maintained through continuous personal use instead of by land titles. We show that removing the link between land use and land rights through the issuance of ownership certificates can result in large-scale adjustments to labor and land allocations. Using the rollout of the Mexican land certification program from 1993 to 2006, we find that households obtaining certificates were subsequently 28 percent more likely to have a migrant member. We also show that even though land certification induced migration, it had little effect on cultivated area due to consolidation of farm units. This article considers the trajectory of the Cusi family, a family of Italian immigrants in Mexico. After arriving in the 1880s, the family accumulated significant land, which was later expropriated under redistributive policies of the 1930s. The Cusis' class status, however, does not explain this expropriation entirely, and this article turns to the family's Italian heritage to explain it more fully. In doing so, it tracks the perception of the Cusis over a 50-year span and points to the shifting boundaries of the Mexican nation. Finally, it analyses a memoir written by a member of the Cusi family as a response to those shifting boundaries and an effort to claim a place in the nation. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This article analyzes the use of remittances by recipient families in Mexico. The results show regional differences, in the sense that the migratory tradition of a region explains that a greater proportion of remittances are intended for business investment. Two facts favor this relationship: the higher age of migrants and heads of households receiving remittances (which, therefore, are in a more advanced stage of the life cycle of savings), and the greater development of the institutions involved in the migration process. The data used for this analysis comes from the Encuesta Nacional de Ingresos y Gastos de los Hogares (ENIGH) and from interviews with the resident colony of Guanajuato in California, United States. In this article we will ponder Mexico's double discourse in managing the migration situation on its southern border. On the one hand, the containment policy that is putting undocumented migrants at risk; while, on the other hand, the claim of protecting human rights. Felix Candela’s hyperbolic paraboloid reinforced concrete structures - also known as hypars - were not only masterly used in his well-known religious buildings but they were also ingeniously and profusely employed to roof a vast number of industrial buildings during the Mexican industrialisation era. Candela’s inverted hypar shells prototype for industrial buildings became a trademark for a systematic and standardised construction method which crossed the Mexican borders to reach and influence the work of other architects and engineers further afield. In the United Kingdom this is exemplified by the John Lewis Warehouse (JLW) at Stevenage in which Candela worked as co-designer and consultant of the post-War architectural firm Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall (YRM) and the engineers Clarke Nicholls and Marcel.The JLW represents a unique structure in the repertoire of Candela’s work outside Mexico for two main reasons. Firstly, it stands as Candela’s first European project and secondly it represents a structure in which ‘automatic beauty’ was achieved through economic efficiency and the use of more sophisticated construction methods than those conventionally used in Mexico. Moreover, and beyond its structural and constructional merits the JLW yields a spatial richness which transformed the ephemeral of the working day to forge spaces of mnemonic identification. Built in 1963, the JLW is an epitome of structural art amongst the industrial buildings of Britain's post-Austerity period. This paper presents a discussion on purview of the immigration issue that develops through the participatory mechanisms of different institutions in the governmental, intergovernmental and civil society areas which featured prominently in the consulting, decision making and ideas-formulation processes that addressed the migratory phenomenon in Mexico (highlighting the think tank experts of migration and the FaithBased Community Organizations). A theoretical analysis of the relational conception of interagency is developed and interpreted as structurally hybrid. This analysis combines material and symbolic practices because it works as an anchor for the political strategies, and it strengthens the rhetoric of dialog, thus creating decision makers and providing imaginary models of the "integrated management of migration". The discussion presented here is complemented by examining the relation between migrants and the institution "Casa del Migrante" in Chiapas, Mexico --which provides them humanitarian aid--, and by recovering information from the study case, applied at the time of their traffic by the southern border and within the focused groups. International migration has become an important topic of discussion from a policy and humanitarian perspective. Part of the debate includes a renewed interest in understanding the factors that influence decisions about migration to the US among Mexican youth still residing in their country of origin. The purpose of this study was to advance knowledge specifically about internal and external religiosity and their influence on youths' migration aspirations. The data for this study were collected in 2007 from students enrolled in an alternative high school program located in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. The findings indicated that as external religiosity increases, the desire to work or live in the USA decreases. Furthermore, as internal religiosity increases, the desire to work or live in the USA and plans to migrate increase. The results are interpreted and discussed in light of previous research on religious and cultural norm adherence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
