The purpose of this research was to determine the relevance of the media in the prevention, education and contextual management of COVID-19. Methodology: descriptive non-experimental transectional research. An international survey validated by experts was applied, surveying 1082 people during a month. The countries with the highest participation were Peru, Colombia, Mexico, the United States and Russia. The data was processed using SPSS version 25. 64.7% of the respondents affirmed that the means were decisive in preventing the pandemic; 59.1% recognized the importance of the media for awareness and prevention of the pandemic, and 64% valued the importance of the media for the contextual management of the pandemic; demonstrating a significant relationship between the variables. Contributions: the need for strategic, prudent, ethical and socially responsible communication that benefits citizens in a pandemic situation is highlighted.

The longhorned tick Haemaphysalis longicornis is a highly invasive tick that is native to Asia. Since its detection in New Jersey in 2017, this tick has spread to 18 states in the Northeast, the Midwest, and the Southeast regions of the United States. In Mexico, H. longicornis has been detected only once in an imported horse at the inspection point in Piedras Negras, Coahuila. However, the risk of introduction and establishment of this tick species is high due to importation of live animals, the frequent legal transportation of numerous pets by tourists, the migration of wildlife across the extensive northern border that is more than 3,000 km long, and the inherent difficulty in detecting immatures stages on animals. The aim of this work is to provide Spanish-language information on the distribution of H. longicornis in North America, as well as the ecological and biological aspects of this tick. This work includes morphological images of H. longicornis aimed at facilitating its accurate identification. This effort provides useful information for veterinarians, government agency officials, and other professionals involved in animal health and tick control to aid in the effective prevention of the introduction and establishment of H. longicornis in Mexico. Background: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of avoidable blindness in children, particularly in Latin America, where hyperoxia is a significant risk factor. This study evaluated resource availability and use for administering and monitoring supplemental oxygen in Mexico. Methods: In 2011, an observational study in which 32 government neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) across Mexico were visited. Data collected included occupancy, staffing levels, and equipment to deliver and monitor supplemental oxygen. Preterm infants receiving oxygen were observed. In 2023, 13 NICUs were revisited, and similar data collected. Staffing levels were benchmarked against Argentinian and US recommendations. Results: In 2011, only 38% of NICUs had adequate medical and staffing levels to meet recommended cot-to-staff ratios for all shifts. Staffing ratios were worse during weekends and at night than during weekdays. Only 25.5% of cots had blenders, and 80.1% had saturation monitors. 153 infants were observed 87% of whom were being monitored. Upper and lower oxygen saturations were ≥ 96% in 53%, and ≤ 89% in 8%, respectively. Alarm settings were inadequate, as 38% and 32% of upper and lower alarms were switched off and 16% and 53% were incorrectly set, respectively. In the 13 NICUs with data from 2011 and 2023, cot-to-staff ratios deteriorated over time, and in 2023 no unit had recommended ratios for all shifts. Equipment provision did not change, with similar proportions of babies in oxygen being monitored (79% 2011; 75% 2023). Rates of hyperoxia decreased slightly from 54% in 2011 to 49% in 2023. More upper alarms were set (46% 2011; 75% 2023), but a higher proportion were incorrectly set (52% 2011; 68% 2023). Conclusions: Between 2011 and 2023, cot-to-staff ratios worsened, and equipment for safe oxygen delivery and monitoring remained insufficient. Despite available monitoring equipment, oxygen saturations often exceeded recommended levels, and alarms were frequently not set or incorrectly configured. Urgent improvements are needed in healthcare workforce numbers and practices, along with ensuring adequate equipment for safe oxygen delivery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder that produces inflammation in the gut mucosa, affecting nutrient digestion and absorption. CD affects 0.3% to 1.0% of the world's population and only 15% have a clinical diagnosis. The only effective treatment is a gluten‐free diet. The objective of this study was to develop a dough for gluten‐free pasta prepared with mixtures of flours from corn, amaranth, soy, and rice. According to the FAO standard of 1975, the resultant mixtures should have a protein content greater than 11.0% and a chemical rating of not less than 70. Three mixtures were obtained: corn‒soy (81‐19), corn‒rice‒soy (48‐37‐15), and corn‒rice‒amaranth (49‐32‐14). To improve the handling of the pasta and its physical characteristics (sedimentation, degree of absorption, and cracked shaped pasta) compared to a control (commercial) gluten‐free pasta, carboxymethylcellulose, an emulsifier (distilled monoglycerides), and egg albumin were added at concentrations of 0.3, 0.5, and 5.0%, respectively. The corn flour was pregelatinized, and the extrusion was repeated twice. The experimental pasta had a protein content of 14.0%, which was higher than the commercial pasta (4.5%), and a gluten content of less than 20 mg/kg which, according to the Codex Alimentarius International Food Standard (2015), it is considered gluten‐free. The corn‒rice‒soy pasta obtained had an acceptance and liking similar to a commercial brand. This pasta may widen the gluten‐free products commercially available to CD patients in Mexico, which nowadays is limited and expensive. Practical Application: Raw materials available in our country were selected to promote their consumption and diversify the ingredients used in the production of gluten‐free products. The pasta obtained presented a higher nutritional content than a commercial gluten‐free pasta and was comparable to that of a pasta made with wheat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. To inform the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and vascular complications in Mexican adults with early- and late-onset diabetes. Materials and methods. Information from adults aged 20 years and over participating in the Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición 2018 was used. To compare variables, chi-square tests and Student's t-test were performed. Multiple logistic regression models of having micro and macrovascular complications were obtained. Results. Prevalence of diagnosed hypertension on early and late diabetes onset were 37.8 and 51.5%, dyslipidemia 42.6 and 43.8%, tobacco consumption 13.5 and 10.2% and obesity 46.5 and 43.0%, respectively. The average time since diagnosis was 16.9 years for those with early-onset diabetes and 8.9 years for those with late-onset. Peripheral vascular disease in the group with early-onset diabetes was 13.5% (20.2% in those with 10 years and more of diabetes duration), and 5.3% in late-onset diabetes group (7.2% in those with 10 years and more of diabetes duration). Conclusion. Adults with earlyonset diabetes presented higher proportion of macrovascular complications, probably due to the longer exposure time to hyperglycemia. Patients with early-onset diabetes require intensive treatment to prevent cardiovascular events. Between 2 and 8.5% of patients who recover from COVID-19 do not develop antibodies, and the durability of IgG antibodies is under scrutiny. Therefore, the presence and persistence of IgM and IgG antibodies were evaluated in a group of patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 from May to August 2020. Out of 2199 suspected COVID-19 cases, 1264 were confirmed for SARS-CoV-2 by rRT-PCR; 328 consented to participate in the study, with 220 participants followed for 9 months, including 124 men (56%) and 96 women (44%). The primary symptoms were headache, dry cough, and fever. IgG antibodies developed in 95% of patients within 4 weeks post-diagnosis, and a second evaluation at 9 months showed that 72.7% still had detectable IgG antibodies. Acaricides are the most widely used method to control the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus. However, its use increases production costs, contaminates food and the environment, and directly affects animal and human health. The intensive use of chemical control has resulted in the selection of genes associated with resistance to acaricides, and consumers are increasingly less tolerant of food contamination. This scenario has increased the interest of different research groups around the world for anti-tick vaccine development, in order to reduce the environmental impact, the presence of residues in food, and the harmful effects on animal and human health. There is enough evidence that vaccination with tick antigens induces protection against tick infestations, reducing tick populations and acaricide treatments. Despite the need for an anti-tick vaccine in Mexico, vaccination against ticks has been limited to one vaccine that is used in some regions. The aim of this review is to contribute to the discussion on tick control issues and provide a reference for readers interested in the importance of using anti-tick vaccines encouraging concerted action on the part of Mexican animal health authorities, livestock organizations, cattle producers, and academics. Objective: Occupational exposure to pesticides is a known risk for disrupting cellular immune response in flower workers due to their use of multiple chemical products, poor work conditions, and inadequate protection. Recently, the analysis of pesticide use patterns has emerged as an alternative to studying exposure to mixtures of these products. This study aimed to evaluate the association between exposure to different patterns of pesticide use and the cytokine profile of flower workers in the State of Mexico and Morelos, Mexico. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on a population of 108 flower workers. Serum levels of IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 cytokines were analyzed by means of multiplex analysis, and TNF-α and IFN-γ using an ELISA test. Pesticide use patterns were generated by principal components analysis. Results: The analysis revealed that certain patterns of pesticide use, combining insecticides and fungicides, were associated with higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, particularly IL-6 and IFN-γ. Conclusion: These findings indicate that pesticides may possess immunotoxic properties, contributing to increased inflammatory response. The authors investigated to what extent teachers' practices and school characteristics can influence students' civic knowledge, civic attitudes, and future participation in Chile, Colombia, and Mexico and how this can be related to their specific curricular structures and educational content. It uses data from the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study. The results show that in Chile, Colombia, and Mexico, teacher practices and attitudes relate to the civic outcomes. Although teachers' practices and attitudes significantly predict students' civic knowledge, this relationship does not seem relevant for students' expected participation and students' attitudes toward diversity. Still, the democratic environment of the school is a relevant variable in the case of expected participation of students and their attitudes toward diversity, which shows a possible indirect influence of teachers through the school environment. The results are discussed in relation to the civic education curriculum in place in the countries analyzed.

Mexico is one of the main diversification centers of cacti in the world, with more than 500 endemic species, most of which remain nutritionally and functionally uncharacterized. The columnar cacti of the genus Pachycereus comprise five underutilized endemic Mexican species, whose nutraceutical properties have only been studied in the P. weberi species. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the nutritional quality and bioactive properties of etcho (P. pecten-aboriginum) and giant cardon (P. pringlei) fruit. The physical, chemical, and nutritional composition of etcho and giant cardon fruits were characterized, as well as the profile and content of bioactive compounds, antioxidant activity (ABTS•+ and DPPH•), and antiproliferative capacity in cervical (HeLa) and breast cancer (MDA-MB-231, MCF-7, and T-47D) cell lines. Our results suggest that etcho and giant cardon fruits are rich sources of essential nutrients and bioactive phytochemicals (including K, Mg, P, dietary fiber, polyphenolic compounds, vitamin C, betalains, and myo-inositol) with antioxidant and anticancer potential by inhibiting the proliferation of all evaluated cell lines with IC50 values in the range of 198 to 287 µg of gallic acid equivalents/mL. The classification of carbapenemases can help guide therapy. The present study evaluated the performance of the CPO detection test, included in the BD Phoenix™ NMIC-501 panel for the detection and classification of carbapenemases on the representative molecularly characterized strains collection from Mexico. Carbapenem non-susceptible isolates collected in Mexico were included. The clinical isolates (n = 484) comprised Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 154), Escherichia coli (n = 150), and P. aeruginosa (n = 180). BD Phoenix CPO NMIC-504 and NMIC-501 panels were used for the identification of species, antimicrobial susceptibility tests, and detection of CPOs. For the detection of carbapenemase-encoding genes, E. coli and K. pneumoniae were evaluated using PCR assays for blaNDM-1, blaKPC, blaVIM, blaIMP, and blaOXA-48-like. For P. aeruginosa, blaVIM, blaIMP, and blaGES were detected using PCR. Regarding E. coli, the CPO panels had a sensitivity of 70% and specificity of 83.33% for the detection of a class B carbapenemase (blaNDM in the molecular test). Regarding K. pneumoniae, the panels had a sensitivity of 75% and specificity of 100% for the detection of a class A carbapenemase (blaKPC in the molecular test). The Phoenix NMIC-501 panels are reliable for detecting class B carbapenemases in E. coli. The carbapenemase classification in K. pneumoniae for class A carbapenemases has a high specificity and PPV; thus, a positive result is of high value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyzed the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) data of 6519 clinical isolates of Escherichia coli (n = 3985), Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 775), Acinetobacter baumannii (n = 163), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n = 781), Enterococcus faecium (n = 124), and Staphylococcus aureus (n = 691) from 43 centers in Mexico. AMR assays were performed using commercial microdilution systems (37/43) and the disk diffusion susceptibility method (6/43). The presence of carbapenemase-encoding genes was assessed using PCR. Data from centers regarding site of care, patient age, and clinical specimen were collected. According to the site of care, the highest AMR was observed in E. coli, K. pneumoniae, and P. aeruginosa isolates from ICU patients. In contrast, in A. baumannii, higher AMR was observed in isolates from hospitalized non-ICU patients. According to age group, the highest AMR was observed in the ≥60 years age group for E. coli, E. faecium, and S. aureus, and in the 19–59 years age group for A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa. According to clinical specimen type, a higher AMR was observed in E. coli, K. pneumoniae, and P. aeruginosa isolates from blood specimens. Introduction: The life cycle analysis (LCA) is intended to be a quantitative tool to support decision making. The evaluation of uncertainties allows evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the estimates made. Monte Carlo Analysis is one of the most widely used methods to propagate uncertainty results. Objective: To know the uncertainty associated with the data and the models used to assess the impact on each category considered, according to the LCA methodology, for the management of Municipal Solid Waste in the Xalatlaco municipality, Mexico. Materials and Methods: In this study, an uncertainty analysis is carried out, using the Monte Carlo method, to evaluate the propagation of data uncertainty in the results of each impact category considered in the study and the comparison of the scenarios, to select the most convenient. Results and Discussion: The results show that the inventory data influence the results of each of the categories; however, the coefficients of variation are less than 25%. The comparison of the Base Scenario with the best option (Scenario 3), allows us to identify that in all the categories the results present lower impacts with respect to the Base Scenario except for ozone layer depletion. Conclusions: The importance of the uncertainty analysis in the Life Cycle Analysis as support in decision making is verified. The implementation of Scenario 3 is feasible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Correct nutrition is important for keeping good health; to attain that, the diet has to include vegetables such as quelites. The objective of this study was to determine the glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) of rice and a tamal prepared with and without two species of quelites: "alache" (Anoda cristata) and "chaya" (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius). The GI was measured in 10 healthy subjects, 7 women and 3 men, with the following mean metrics: age, 23 years old; body weight, 61.3 kg; height, 1.65 m; body mass index, 22.7 kg/m2; and basal glycemia, 77.4 mg/dL. Capillary blood samples were collected within 2 h after the meal. White rice (rice with no quelites) had a GI of 75.35 ± 15.6 and a GL of 36.17 ± 7.8; rice with alache had a GI of 33.74 ± 5.85 and a GL 33.74 ± 1.85. White tamal had a GI of 57.33 ± 10.23 and a GC of 26.65 ± 5.12; tamal with chaya had a GI of 46.73 ± 22.1 and a GL of 23.36 ± 11. The GI and GL values recorded for the combination of quelites with rice and tamal confirmed that quelites could be a good alternative for healthy diets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The causes of deforestation and forest degradation are complex and often region-specific. Socioeconomic factors have been identified as the primary driver, having a strong impact on landscape structure as they degrade or improve the ability of landscapes to provide habitats for a variety of species. Coffee agroforestry systems have great potential to provide habitats for multiple species. However, this coexistence depends on a fragile balance as most coffee producers are poor and highly vulnerable to variations in the price of agricultural products, and coffee plants are susceptible to crop pests and diseases, among other factors. We conducted an in-depth analysis of the drivers of land use change in a high-biodiversity landscape in southern Mexico where shaded coffee systems favor the connectivity of several protected natural areas. We elaborated land-use change maps using high-resolution images and conducted 106 semi-structured interviews to gather information on the causes of land-use change. The types of land cover across 7409 ha changed over ten years (2005–2015): 3658 ha (49%) due to habitat loss and degradation, 2370 ha (32%) to habitat gain, and 1381 ha (19%) to conversion from other non-forest areas. In all cases, the predominant drivers were the incidence of pests and diseases and the lack of profitability of coffee, which influenced the strategies available to producers. The volatility of coffee prices, the incidence of pests and diseases, and the lack of a sustainable national coffee policy are serious threats to the conservation of shaded coffee systems and biodiversity in this region. Alopecia, or alopecia syndrome is the partial or complete loss of hair from an animal's body. Following a previous report on bats with alopecia, in this work we complemented the list of bat species with alopecia available in the literature through 2023, adding phyllostomids (Artibeus planirostris, Carollia perspicillata), an emballonurid (Peropteryx pallidoptera), molossids (Molossus rufus, Nyctinomops macrotis), and vespertilionids (Corynorhinus rafinesquii, Eptesicus fuscus, Nycticeius humeralis, Myotis austroriparius, M. grisescens, M. velifer). We also explored factors that may explain alopecia in the first records of this condition in ten Pteronotus mesoamericanus females from Oaxaca, southeastern Mexico, recorded from November 2020 to January 2022. In those individuals, hair loss was observed on the back and head; six of them were lactating and four showed no evidence of reproductive activity. In addition, we documented alopecia on the thorax in four individuals of three species: Artibeus lituratus (one pregnant female and one male with scrotal testes), Pteronotus fulvus (one pregnant female), and Artibeus toltecus (one pregnant female). The alopecic bats presented mild alopecia (the affected area ranged from 1–5 cm2), and only one female showed moderate alopecia (8.1 cm2). Alopecia in P. mesoamericanus, P. fulvus, A. toltecus, and A. lituratus may be due to hormonal or nutritional imbalances associated with reproduction. In addition, in A. lituratus it may also be the result of environmental stress when foraging in an urban area. The causal agents of alopecia in bats are still not fully known, and it is probably a multifactorial phenomenon. La alopecia, o síndrome de alopecia es la pérdida parcial o total del pelo del cuerpo de un animal. Siguiendo un informe previo sobre murciélagos con alopecia, en este trabajo complementamos la lista de especies de murciélagos con alopecia disponibles en la literatura hasta 2023, agregando filostómidos (Artibeus planirostris, Carollia perspicillata), un embalonúrido (Peropteryx pallidoptera), molósidos (Molossus rufus, Nyctinomops macrotis) y vespertiliónidos (Corynorhinus rafinesquii, Eptesicus fuscus, Nycticeius humeralis, Myotis austroriparius, M. grisescens, M. velifer). También exploramos los factores que pueden explicar la alopecia en los primeros registros de esta condición en diez hembras de Pteronotus mesoamericanus de Oaxaca, sureste de México, registradas desde noviembre de 2020 hasta enero de 2022. En esos individuos se observó pérdida de pelo en el dorso y la cabeza; seis de ellos estaban lactando y cuatro no mostraron evidencia de actividad reproductiva. Además, documentamos alopecia en el tórax en cuatro individuos de tres especies: Artibeus lituratus (una hembra gestante y un macho con testículos escrotados), Pteronotus fulvus (una hembra gestante) y Artibeus toltecus (una hembra gestante). Los murciélagos alopécicos presentaron alopecia leve (el área afectada osciló entre 1–5 cm2), y solo una hembra presentó alopecia moderada (8.1 cm2). La alopecia en P. mesoamericanus, P. fulvus, A. toltecus y A. lituratus puede deberse a desequilibrios hormonales o nutricionales asociados con la reproducción. Además, en A. lituratus también puede ser el resultado del estrés ambiental cuando se alimenta en un área urbana. Introduction: Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I) is a lysosomal storage disease present in 1:100,000 newborns. Variants in the IDUA (alpha-L-iduronidase) gene decrease the enzyme activity for glycosaminoglycans metabolism. MPS I patients exhibit clinical manifestations that fall on the Hurler, Hurler–Scheie, and Scheie syndrome spectrum. Case presentation: We present a male Mexican patient with respiratory exacerbations requiring recurrent hospitalizations. He showed macrocephaly, coarse facies, hepatomegaly, umbilical hernia, and dorsal kyphosis. The sequencing of the IDUA gene revealed the following genotype: c.46_57del12/c.1205G>A. He received combined therapy with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and enzyme replacement. Mexican case reports were analyzed to estimate the prevalence of the associated genetic variants. Conclusion: Despite the challenges of managing this rare disease in Mexico, our patient benefited from the combined therapy. The discrete clinical manifestations and prompt evaluation by a geneticist were crucial in establishing a diagnosis, enabling an early intervention by a multidisciplinary team. Prenatal exposure to dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p´ -DDE) may interfere with fetal development; however, studies evaluating anthropometry and gestational age at birth show inconsistent results. Typically, p,p´ -DDE exposure has been measured during the third trimester and missed the key early pregnancy period. We evaluated the association between p,p´ -DDE exposure before week 18 of pregnancy and anthropometry at birth, as well as gestational length, in 170 mother–child pairs from a cohort study in a flower-growing mexican region. Maternal serum p,p´ -DDE concentrations were determined by gas chromatography. The associations between p,p´ -DDE and z-scores of birth weight, birth length, and gestational age were evaluated by linear multiple regression models. Logistic regression models were used for low birth weight and small size for gestational age. Effect modification by child's sex was explored. The average gestational age at the blood sample extraction was 10.6 weeks. p,p' -DDE was detected in 64.7% of mothers, at a geometric mean of 0.24 ng/mL. Prenatal p,p´ -DDE exposure was not associated with the birth outcomes in the whole sample. However, a high p,p´ -DDE exposure was marginally associated with greater small for gestational age risk in male newborns (OR≥0.076ng/mL vs <0.076 ng/mL = 3.09, 95% CI: 0.61; 15.58), but not in female (p for interaction = 0.08). Even though, we found no reductions in anthropometric measurements or gestational length associated with early prenatal p,p´ -DDE exposure, the potential effect modification by infant's sex in terms of small for the gestational age risk deserves future studies. Objectives: Current irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) treatments have limited efficacy and probiotics like Bacillus clausii (B. clausii) were found to be effective in the management of several gastrointestinal disorders. This phase III trial assessed the efficacy and safety of adding B. clausii (four strains: O/C, N/R, SIN, T), versus placebo, to conventional treatment of pediatric IBS in Mexico. Methods: Patients aged 6–17 years 11 months with IBS (Rome IV) for at least 2 months were randomized to receive either B. clausii (oral suspension, total dose 4 billion spores/day) or placebo once daily for 8 weeks. All patients also received conventional treatment. The primary endpoint was the difference in the proportion of patients with clinical improvements at Week 8 (Global Assessment Questions [GAQ]). Secondary endpoints included responders by Subject's Global Assessment of Relief for Children with IBS (SGARC); number/consistency of stools; abdominal distention/bloating; abdominal pain/intensity; and IBS behavior. Results: 73.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 67.3–80.0; B. clausii n = 129) and 78.5% (95% CI 72.5–84.4; placebo n = 130) of patients had symptom improvement (p = 0.8182). For Week 8 SGARC, 19.2% (B. clausii) and 20.9% (placebo) reported complete symptom relief. Stool evaluations, bloating, abdominal pain/intensity, and IBS behavior were similar between groups. Both treatments were well tolerated. Conclusion: No significant differences in efficacy between B. clausii and placebo were demonstrated in addition to conventional treatment. The sample size calculation was based on an expected placebo/conventional treatment response of 30–40%. However, the actual treatment response observed was 80% and, thus, a study with larger population would be warranted. In addition, this study was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, when such controlled social conditions may have resulted in better diet, greater family stability, less psychological stress, and lower risk of infections exacerbating IBS, thereby improving symptoms in both groups. Background. Antimicrobial resistance is a global concern. Analysis of sterile fluids is essential because microorganisms are defined as significant in most cases. Blood, cerebrospinal, and pleural fluids are frequently received in the microbiology lab because they are associated with considerable rates of morbi-mortality. Knowledge of epidemiology in these samples is needed to choose proper empirical treatments due to the importance of reducing selection pressure. Methods. We used retrospective laboratory data of blood, CSF, and pleural fluid collected from patients in Mexico between 2019 and 2020. Each laboratory identified the strains and tested susceptibility using its routine methods. For Streptococcus pneumoniae, a comparative analysis was performed with data from the broth microdilution method. Results. Forty-five centers participated in the study, with 30,746 clinical isolates from blood, 2,429 from pleural fluid, and 2,275 from CSF. For blood and CSF, Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most frequent. For blood, among gram negatives, the most frequent was Escherichia coli. Among Enterobacterales, 9.8% of K. pneumoniae were carbapenem-resistant. For S. pneumoniae, similar resistance percentages were observed for levofloxacin, cefotaxime, and vancomycin. For CSF, the most frequent gramnegative was E. coli. In Acinetobacter baumannii, carbapenem resistance was 71.4%. The most frequent species detected for pleural fluid was E. coli; in A. baumannii, carbapenem resistance was 96.3%. Conclusion. Gram-negative bacteria, with E. coli most prevalent, are frequently recovered from CSF, blood, and pleural fluid. In S. pneumoniae, the routine, conventional methods showed good agreement in detecting resistance percentages for erythromycin, levofloxacin, and vancomycin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The identification of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales and Pseudomonas aeruginosa is important for treating and controlling hospital infections. The recommended methods for their identification require a long waiting time, technical training, and expertise. Lateral flow immunoassays such as NG-Test CARBA 5® overcome these needs. We analyzed 84 clinical isolates of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales and P. aeruginosa from four different hospitals in a two-year period. Antimicrobial resistance patterns were confirmed with the broth dilution method. Evaluation of KPC, VIM, NDM, IMP, and OXA-48-like enzymes was performed and compared to NG-Test CARBA 5 and phenotypic assays. Enterobacterales represented 69% of isolates and P. aeruginosa represented 31%. Carbapenemase-producing strains were 51 (88%) of Enterobacterales and 23 (88.4%) of P. aeruginosa; 20 (34%) and 23 (88%) were Class B ß-lactamases, respectively. The NG-Test CARBA 5® assay for Enterobacterales showed high sensitivity (98%), specificity (100%), and PPV (100%); however, it did not for P. aeruginosa. The Kappa concordance coefficient was 0.92 for Enterobacterales and 0.52 for P. aeruginosa. NG-Test CARBA 5® is a fast and easy-to-use assay. In Enterobacterales, we found excellent agreement in our comparison with molecular tests. Despite the low agreement in P. aeruginosa, we suggest that this test could be used as a complementary tool. The physiographic, climatic, and ecological characteristics of the mountainous regions of Oaxaca are unique and host geographically isolated populations of Peromyscus mexicanus. Populations of P. mexicanus from the Sierra Madre del Sur in the Gulf side (SMG) and Pacific side (SMP), Oaxaca, were compared at the craniodental and molecular genetic levels (cytochrome b sequences). The geographic isolation of both sides of the Sierra Madre del Sur are expected to have led to genetic isolation between populations of P. mexicanus in each area and from populations of eastern México. Our results show that the Oaxacan SMG and SMP populations are genetically different, as are populations of eastern México. Populations in the Oaxaca SMG-SMP are more genetically similar to P. gymnotis than to P. mexicanus from eastern México. We recommend that the Oaxacan SMG population be classified as P. totontepecus and the SMP population as P. angelensis, with the Putla population, which is morphologically and morphometrically different, as the subspecies, P. a. putlaensis. Las características fisiográficas, climáticas y ecológicas de las regiones montañosas de Oaxaca son únicas y albergan poblaciones de Peromyscus mexicanus aisladas geográficamente. Se compararon a nivel craneodental y genético molecular (secuencias del citocromo b) poblaciones de P. mexicanus de las Sierras Madre del Sur en la vertiente del Golfo (SMG) y del Pacífico (SMP) de Oaxaca. Por el aislamiento geográfico de ambas vertientes de la Sierra Madre del Sur, se espera aislamiento genético entre las poblaciones de P. mexicanus y a su vez con las poblaciones del este de México. Los resultados muestran que las poblaciones de SMG y SMP son genéticamente diferentes, al igual que las poblaciones del este de México. Las poblaciones de SMG-SMP de Oaxaca están más próximas genéticamente a P. gymnotis que a P. mexicanus del este de México. This study provides evidence of the seasonal and spatial variation of metal(lloid)s in particulate matter minor to 2.5 microns (PM2.5) in the Toluca Valley Metropolitan Area (TVMA), the fifth largest urban center in Mexico. Four sites were sampled between 2013 and 2014, which included urban and industrial areas, in the dry-cold (November-February) and dry-hot (March-May) seasons; PM2.5 was collected using high- and medium-volume samplers. Metal(lloid) concentrations in PM2.5 were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry (ICP‒MS). The highest 24-hour PM2.5 concentration in the northern area was observed, and the PM2.5 concentrations were independent of the season. Five metal(lloid)s with a recovery percentage above 80% were considered to be reported (Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Sb). The maximum concentrations of metal(lloid)s were observed during the dry-cold season, and concentrations were up to one hundred or thousand fold with respect to the dry-hot season. Background. Survival and recurrence rates following locoregional colon cancer surgical resection are highly variable. Currently used tools to assess patient risk are still imperfect. In the present work, we evaluate, for the first time, the prognostic value of the recently developed HALP (hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet) index in Hispanic colon cancer patients. Patients and Methods. We conducted a retrospective cohort study in Mexican patients with a nonmetastatic colon cancer diagnosis who underwent surgical resection. We determined the preoperative HALP score optimal cut-off value by using the X-tile software. We plotted survival curves using the Kaplan–Meier method and performed a multivariate Cox regression analysis to explore the association of preoperative HALP score with two primary endpoints: overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Results. We included 640 patients (49.8% female). The optimal HALP cut-off value was 15.0. A low HALP index was statistically significantly associated with a higher TNM stage. Low HALP score was statistically significantly associated with shorter median OS in the Kaplan–Meier analysis (73.5 vs. 84.8 months) and in the multivariate Cox regression analysis (HR = 1.942, 95% CI = 1.647–2.875). There was no significant association between the HALP score and DFS. Conclusions. Our findings show that the HALP index is an independent factor associated with survival in Hispanic patients, despite recurrence. It seems to reflect both the anatomical extent of the disease and traditionally unaccounted nutritional and inflammatory factors that are significant for prognosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wounds represent a medical problem that contributes importantly to patient morbidity and to healthcare costs in several pathologies. In Hidalgo, Mexico, the Bacopa procumbens plant has been traditionally used for wound-healing care for several generations; in vitro and in vivo experiments were designed to evaluate the effects of bioactive compounds obtained from a B. procumbens aqueous fraction and to determine the key pathways involved in wound regeneration. Bioactive compounds were characterized by HPLC/QTOF-MS, and proliferation, migration, adhesion, and differentiation studies were conducted on NIH/3T3 fibroblasts. Polyphenolic compounds from Bacopa procumbens (PB) regulated proliferation and cell adhesion; enhanced migration, reducing the artificial scratch area; and modulated cell differentiation. PB compounds were included in a hydrogel for topical administration in a rat excision wound model. Histological, histochemical, and mechanical analyses showed that PB treatment accelerates wound closure in at least 48 h and reduces inflammation, increasing cell proliferation and deposition and organization of collagen at earlier times. These changes resulted in the formation of a scar with better tensile properties. Immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR molecular analyses demonstrated that treatment induces (i) overexpression of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) and (ii) the phosphorylation of Smad2/3 and ERK1/2, suggesting the central role of some PB compounds to enhance wound healing, modulating TGF-β activation. Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element that by its antioxidant properties has been studied to elucidate its participation in the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes. We evaluated the association between cardiometabolic traits and serum Se levels in a sample of adults from southern Mexico. In 96 nondiabetic individuals, anthropometric data and clinical biochemistry measurements were analyzed. Serum total Se levels were measured with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Serum Se level in the whole sample was 10.309 ± 3.031 μg mL−1 and no difference between the women and men was observed (p = 0.09). Additionally, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) was significantly associated with serum Se level (β = −0.07 ± 0.03, p = 0.02, analysis adjusted for age, sex and BMI). Furthermore, sex shows significant interaction with FPG on the serum Se levels (p = 0.01). A follow-up analysis revealed the particular association between FPG and Se levels in women (β = −0.10 ± 0.04, p = 0.01). Introduction. After several months of COVID-19 lockdown, addressing the implications related to the emotional distress and well-being of the population during confinement has become increasingly evident. Objective. To explore, through a lexicometric and content-based approach, the responses related to discomfort and emotional well-being during the first confinement due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Method. Subjects included 2,555 adults in Mexico, mainly women (78.3%), with an average age of 46. Data were drawn from an online survey published on social networks from June 3 to July 5, 2020. The open answers of the subjects about discomfort and emotional well-being during lockdown, together with suggestions to improve the handling of the pandemic, were analyzed using word frequency analysis (clouds) and thematic content analysis. Result. Findings highlighted the implications of lockdown, including loss of social interaction, teleworking and overexposure to the news, associated with discomfort. In turn, activities related to self-care, doing household repairs, and sharing activities with the family were linked to well-being. Discussion and conclusion. Findings show that time was a key factor to transition from well-being to boredom, where space and material resources played a preponderant role during confinement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The population of Mexico has a considerable genetic substructure due to both its pre-Columbian diversity and due to genetic admixture from post-Columbian trans-oceanic migrations. The latter primarily originated in Europe and Africa, but also, to a lesser extent, in Asia. We analyze previously understudied genetic connections between Asia and Mexico to infer the timing and source of this genetic ancestry in Mexico. We identify the predominant origin within Southeast Asia—specifically western Indonesian and non-Negrito Filipino sources—and we date its arrival in Mexico to approximately 13 generations ago (1620 CE). This points to a genetic legacy from the seventeenth century Manila galleon trade between the colonial Spanish Philippines and the Pacific port of Acapulco. Indeed, within Mexico we observe the highest level of this trans-Pacific ancestry in Acapulco, located in the state of Guerrero. This colonial Spanish trade route from East Asia to Europe was centred on Mexico and appears in historical records, but its legacy has been largely ignored. Identities and stories were suppressed due to slavery, assimilation of the immigrants as ‘Indios’ and incomplete historical records. Here we characterize this understudied Mexican ancestry. There are antagonistic positions to the prohibition of smoking in closed spaces. This article aims to evaluate the opinion on the law that regulates the consumption of tobacco in public spaces in Nuevo León, Mexico. A cross-sectional study, with systematic probability sampling, using a telephone survey, was done with a sample of 1,070. The items of the law were analyzed, based on age, sex, education, and smoking through descriptive statistics, multivariate logistic regression, odds ratios, and confidence intervals. It was realized that 79.3% agreed to prohibit smoking in closed places and 76.8% in terraces, 93.4%, support protecting workers from exposure. In casinos and clubs, the law was mostly not followed; 62.2%, were willing to denounce this negation of the law. Active smoking discouraged the belief in damage to health (OR: 0.2; CI95%: 0.1–0.9) and the prohibition of special areas for smokers (OR: 0.2; 95% CI: 0.1–0.3). Age 25–39 years (31.3%), female (60.4%) and preparatory-or-technical schooling (37.7%) predominated. The opinion favorable to the implementation of the law prevailed. Caranx caninus, C. sexfasciatus, Chloroscombrus orqueta, Selene brevoortii, S. peruviana, and Selar crumenophthalmus are species with economic importance for local artisanal fisheries and are regular components of the fish assemblage at Barra de Navidad coastal lagoon in the Pacific coast of Mexico. The working hypothesis was that carangid species in the lagoon share a common food base but the proportion of main food categories in the diet will be different for some groups of species due to differences in key morphological characteristics of the carangids. A total of 1251 individuals were used for diet analyses. Stomach content analyses showed that five species feed on benthic invertebrates and small fish while one species was mostly a plankton feeder. A partial sharing of main food resources was found for most of the studied species, but significant differences in the proportion of food categories in the diet were identified for several groups of species. Another aspect of diet variation was associated with predator size whereby larger individuals tended to consume the largest prey. A plausible explanation for the variation observed in feeding habits is based on morphological differences among groups of species which favor piscivory or planktivory in some cases. This paper is the first published report on the feeding habits of all six species in any Mexican estuarine habitat and of four species in Eastern Pacific estuarine waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. The CF variants incidence is highly variable and even undetermined in some countries like Mexico. Methods: In this study, the allele frequencies of 361 variants in the CFTR gene were investigated in 1455 Mexicans without a CF or CFTR-related disorders (CFTR-RD) diagnosis. We also performed a statistical comparative analysis against allele frequencies of different populations to measure genetic differences in the prevalence of CFTR variants. Results: In the vast majority of cases, the allele frequencies of this cohort were comparable to those found in other populations. However, some variants displayed significant differences in their allele frequencies when compared with European and African populations. Conclusions: This study provides information about CFTR variants to predict the prevalence of CF in Mexico and uncover other unknown but frequent pathogenic variants in the country. Additionally, other CFTR-RD variants have also been studied using population data of the same CFTR variants.
