Preventive behavior and decision-making processes depend greatly on risk perception. Incorporating the affective component in risk assessment provides valuable information for understanding COVID-19-related risk. The study aimed to adapt and validate the COVID-19 Risk Belief Scale and evaluating Intuitive Risk Perception and its association with anxiety and worry. A crosssectional study was conducted analyzing data from 694 Mexican adults, which was collected through online platforms during 2020. The final CFA including 18 items showed adequate goodness-of-fit indices (RMSEA = 0.059, 90% CI [0.053, 0.065]; CFI = 0.95; TLI = 0.94; SRMR = 0.044) supporting a five-factor structure. Moderate levels of intuitive risk perception were found, as well as moderate to low levels of worry and somatic anxiety. Significant correlations between both measures and risk perception were observed. This study confirms the importance of the affective component within risk assessment and findings become highly significant considering the current worldwide pandemic conditions. Objective Although blood bank-based studies have shown that rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-related autoantibodies are present before the onset of RA, information on their positive predictive value (PPV) for development of RA in healthy individuals is scarce. This study was undertaken to assess the 5-year PPV of serum IgM rheumatoid factor (IgM-RF) and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) for the development of RA among healthy relatives of patients with RA. Methods Healthy relatives of RA patients were invited to participate in a cohort study. At baseline, information on participants' medical history was obtained, and serum levels of IgM-RF and anti-CCP antibodies were determined (by nephelometry and second-generation anti-CCP enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively). The subjects were followed up every 4 months via a structured interview (Community Oriented Program for Control of Rheumatic Diseases [COPCORD] questionnaire). When the COPCORD questionnaire indicated possible arthritis, subjects underwent an in-office rheumatology assessment including joint count. The study end point was defined as fulfillment of the American College of Rheumatology criteria for RA. Results Eight hundred nineteen initially healthy relatives of 252 patients with RA were included (69% female, 41% offspring, mean ± SD age 35 ± 12 years). Eleven (1.3%) were positive for both anti-CCP-2 and RF, 12 (1.5%) only for anti-CCP-2, and 16 (2%) only for RF. RA developed in 17 (2.1%) of the relatives during the 5-year followup (3,313 person-years for the seronegative group and 60.8 person-years for the anti-CCP-2-positive group). The PPV was 64% when both anti-CCP-2 and RF were positive and 58% when only anti-CCP-2 was positive. Offspring of patients with RA had an independent 3-fold increased risk of developing RA. Conclusion Results of the present study indicate that the magnitude of risk for developing RA in healthy relatives of patients with RA can be estimated using simple routine laboratory tests. Simple Summary: The low deciduous forest is an ecosystem covering 8% of México's surface and is present in 15 of the 32 states of the country. It has been observed that sheep and goats feeding in this high biodiverse biome can consume up to 80 plant species. In addition, the low deciduous forest biomass is frequently used to feed small ruminants in cut and carry systems. However, there is not enough information to provide guidelines for its sustainable use by ruminant livestock. In the present review, we present an interdisciplinary approach aimed at identifying the nutraceutical properties of this native vegetation system, involving disciplines like botany, ecology, agronomy, ethology, ethnoveterinary, nutrition, parasitology and chemistry. Nutraceuticals are defined as livestock feeds combining nutritional value with beneficial effects on animal health and productivity. The identification of nutraceutical properties amongst plant species of the low deciduous forest may contribute to the revalorization of this native vegetation system and provide information enabling the design of sustainable livestock feeding/management systems that benefit the nutrition and health of small ruminants, and ultimately human health through the consumption of animal products produced in this native vegetation system. The plant kingdom can influence the productivity and health of herbivores at different levels. However, demonstrating this process in a scientific manner entails substantial endeavors from different disciplines. In the present review, we will describe the features of a native vegetation system traditionally used by small ruminants and use its particularities to build an interdisciplinary approach to evaluate the nutraceutical properties of plants. Initially, we will establish the context of the low deciduous forest (LDF), considering some botanical and nutritional aspects, as well as the presence of plant secondary compounds (PSC) and gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN). Furthermore, we will focus on coevolutionary aspects that undoubtedly shaped the plants–nutrients–PSC–GIN–herbivore relationship. In addition, the concept of nutraceutical will be discussed to provide clarity and aspects to be considered for their evaluation. Then, ethological, agronomical, nutritional, PSC, parasitological and animal species issues are deepened placing emphasis on methodological approaches. Special focus is given to condensed tannins, as they are the fourth largest group of PSCs and the most studied in livestock sciences. Validation of the nutraceutical properties of plants from native vegetation systems should be seen as a process derived from many scientific disciplines that feed into each other in a cyclic manner. This overview describes a series of studies on the feeding behaviour of goats in the low deciduous forest (LDF) and some of the factors that affect such behaviour. Those multidisciplinary studies included field trials as well as controlled pen trials. Field observations were performed with the direct observation method (DOM) and by establishing a bite code grid adapted to the LDF, and the pen studies used a cafeteria strategy using leaves harvested from different plants of the LDF. Studies exploring the selection of feed resources used different selection indexes. Field observations showed that goats consumed >90 plant species from the heterogeneous vegetation, but only a few (7 - 15 species) represented >90% of the daily intake, and that differed between rainy and dry seasons. Although the LDF vegetation allows goats to match their crude protein requirements in both seasons, dietary energy was the limiting factor, and the condensed tannin (CT) content of the harvested diet was always high. Field and cafeteria studies suggested that goats optimize their diet with the resources available as they prefer to consume leaves with lower fibrous content while plant secondary metabolites (PSM) such as condensed tannins (CT) seemed less influential. Field and pen studies confirmed that CT blocking with polyethylene glycol did not modify the intake and selection of the CT-rich foliage which could be related to tannin-binding salivary proteins which were identified as an innate feature of the local goats. While pen studies showed that browsing experience helped goats select feeds of better digestibility and lower PSM content, helping them optimize their nutrition, field studies showed that adult goats consumed more plant species, performed larger bites, at higher strata than kids, while the proportion of life forms consumed was similar. Most field and pen studies showed that goats generally do not consume CT-rich foliage as a therapeutic self-medication strategy against gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN), instead, a prophylactic strategy seemed feasible. This behavioural feature could aim at different goals: (i) to avoid excess nitrogen in the rumen, (ii) to maintain the CP:energy balance (reducing energy loss due to urea urinary excretion), and (iii) to avoid exsheathment of GIN L 3 (affecting their life-cycle). The DOM showed that goats consume small quantities of plants containing toxic compounds and they shift from browsing early in the morning to grazing some hours later, and both strategies warrant further research. The DOM also helped to relate plant life forms consumed with the degree of GIN infection, which deepens our understanding of GIN epidemiology in heterogeneous vegetation ecosystems. The objective of this study was to determine the biological activity of anti-nutritional factors present in nine foliage and five fruit samples from forage-trees of Central Chiapas, México, in 2006. The anti-nutritional factors studied were total polyphenols and condensed tannins. The experimental design was completely-randomized, and statistics was done by regression and correlation analyzes. The method used was in vitro gas production in an N-enriched solution, and the addition of Poly-ethylene glycol (PEG-4000). Chemical composition and increase in gas production of samples (over 24 hours and total) were analyzed. Chemical composition varied widely among species. PEG raised significantly gas production (p<0.05) in foliage of L. collinsii, G. ulmifolia, A. pennatula and A. milleriana and in fruits of A. milleriana, G. ulmifolia y L. collinsii. In foliage samples, the increase in gas production was negatively related to high phenols and condensed tannin content of the species (FDN= r= -0.68, p<0.04 and r-0.67, p<0.03 respectively). In fruits, there was not relation between phenol and tannin content and gas production, but there was an inverse relation with fiber contents (FDN= r -0.97, p<0.06 and FDA= r -0.94, p<0.01). The forage-trees studied contain high levels of anti-nutritional factors, particularly in their foliage and PEG is useful to study their anti-nutritional activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The variability in the expression of different P-glycoprotein (P-gp) genes in parasitic nematodes of ruminants such as Haemonchus contortus (Hco-pgp) may be caused by different factors including nematode biology, geographical region and anthelmintic pressure. This study analysed the relative expression level of 10 P-gp genes in two H. contortus (Hco-pgp) field isolates from Yucatan, Mexico: 1) PARAISO (IVM-resistant) and 2) FMVZ-UADY (IVM-susceptible). These isolates were compared with a susceptible reference isolate from Puebla, Mexico, namely "CENID-SAI". In all cases H. contortus adult males were used. The Hco-pgp genes (1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 16) were analysed for each isolate using the RT-qPCR technique. The Hco-pgp expressions were pairwise compared using the 2 -ΔΔCt method and a t-test. The PARAISO isolate showed upregulation compared to the CENID-SAI isolate for Hco-pgp 1, 3, 9, 10 and 16 (P < 0.05), and the PARAISO isolate showed upregulation vs. FMVZ-UADY isolate for Hco-pgp 2 and 9 (P < 0.05), displaying 6.58- and 5.93-fold differences (P < 0.05), respectively. In contrast, similar Hco-pgp gene expression levels were recorded for FMVZ-UADY and CENID-SAI isolates except for Hco-pgp1 (P <0.1), which presented a significant upregulation (6.08-fold). The relative expression of Hco-pgp allowed confirming the IVM-resistant status of the PARAISO isolate and the IVM-susceptible status of the FMVZ-UADY isolate when compared to the CENID-SAI reference isolate. Therefore, understanding the association between the Hco-pgp genes expression of H. contortus and its IVM resistance status could help identifying the genes that could be used as molecular markers in the diagnosis of IVM resistance. Positive Psychology has been devoted to enhancing well-being within organizations during the first two decades of the current millennium. Unfortunately, little data is available on current assessment related to positive psychology practices in the workplace. Therefore, to assess organizational well-being in a valid and reliable way, a new scale has been created and validated by the Institute for Wellbeing and Happiness at Tecmilenio University in Mexico: the BEAT Questionnaire whose main contribution to previous models is the element of meaningful work. EFA and CFA were carried out to determine and confirm the scale's structure; internal consistency tests were performed too; additionally, convergence with measures of engagement, labor resources, and worker relations were also confirmed, and discriminant validity was tested by comparing associations with job search intentions and negative relationships in the workplace, yielding an instrument with four clearly defined latent dimensions, composed by 24 highly consistent items, convergent with three other valid and reliable scales. All procedures complied with statistical requirements, delivering a valid and reliable instrument for measuring well-being in the workplace.

This study aimed to compare growth and slaughter performance of layer-type slow-growing Rhode Island Red male chickens grown with and without access to an area with vegetation in the tropics. Raised until 115 days of age, a total of 156, 1-day-old birds were randomly allocated to two treatments: total confinement (TC) and partial confinement (PC), with 6 replicates of 13 birds each. Birds grown under TC conditions reached a live weight of 2016.68 g while those raised with access to outdoors attained 1981.07 g, without statistical differences. Feed intake and daily feed intake were higher (P < 0.05) in birds farmed with TC management, during the last 17 days of the trial. Treatments did not significantly (P > 0.05) affect bird's other productive parameters and carcass traits. Results from this study suggested that slow-growing Rhode Island Red males may be raised with access to outdoors without any adverse effect on productive performance and carcass quality in the Mexican Tropic. Based on the results of this study, a rearing period of 84 days of age is recommended for Rhode Island Red male chickens raised in both TC and PC production systems.

Two new spongian furanoditerpenes, 3β-hydroxyspongia-13(16),14-dien-2-one ( 1 ) and 19-dehydroxy-spongian diterpene 17 ( 2 ), along with five known terpenes, the spongian furanoditerpenes 9-nor-3-hydroxyspongia-3,13(16),14-trien-2-one ( 3 ), 3β,19 dihydroxyspongia-13(16),14-dien-2-one (epispongiadiol) ( 4 ) and spongian diterpene 17 ( 5 ), the furanoditerpene ambliol C ( 6 ), and the sesterterpene scalarin ( 7 ), were isolated from the methanolic extract of the sponge Spongia tubulifera , collected in the Mexican Caribbean. The planar structures of the new compounds were elucidated by 1D/2D NMR and IR spectroscopic analysis, high resolution electrospray mass spectrometry (HRESIMS), and comparison of their spectral data with those reported in the literature. Absolute configurations were determined by comparison of the experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectrum with those calculated by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). Compounds 1 , 4 , and 6 displayed weak cytotoxic activity against different human tumour cell lines.

The effect of maize grain supplementation on the resilience and resistance of browsing Criollo goat kids against gastrointestinal nematodes was evaluated. Five-month-old kids (n = 42), raised worm-free, were allocated to five groups: infected + not supplemented (I-NS; n = 10), infected + maize supplement at 108 g/d (I-S108; n = 8), maize supplement at 1% of body weight (BW) (I-S1%; n = 8), maize supplement at 1.5% BW (I-S1.5%; n = 8), or infected + supplemented (maize supplement 1.5% BW) + moxidectin (0.2 mg/kg BW subcutaneously every 28 d) (T-S1.5%; n = 8). Kids browsed daily (7 h) in a tropical forest for 112 days during the rainy season. Kids were weighed weekly to adjust supplementary feeding. Hematocrit (Ht), hemoglobin (Hb), and eggs per gram of feces were determined fortnightly. On day 112, five goat kids were slaughtered per group to determine worm burdens. Kids of the I-S1.5% group showed similar body-weight change, Ht and Hb, compared to kids without gastrointestinal nematodes (T-S1.5%), as well as lower eggs per gram of feces and Trichostrongylus colubriformis worm burden compared to the I-NS group (P > 0.05). Thus, among the supplement levels tested, increasing maize supplementation at 1.5% BW of kids was the best strategy to improve their resilience and resistance against natural gastrointestinal nematode infections under the conditions of forage from the tropical forest., (© L. The aim of this study was to assess whether family members perceive health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of family members with rheumatic illnesses differently from the perceptions of these patients themselves. Cross-sectional study of consecutive patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) attending two outpatient rheumatic clinics. HRQoL was assessed using the Spanish version of the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Scale (WHODAS-II) questionnaire; the "proxy" version is available for relatives. All patients and one proxy per patient separately answered the questionnaire at the clinic. Differences were determined by coefficients of determination (r (2)), Z scores, and meaningful differences of 30 %. Two hundred and ninety-one patients (111 SLE, 100 RA, and 80 AS) and their respective proxies were included. The mean age was 35 ± 13 years in SLE, 49.5 ± 14 years in RA, and 40 ± 14 years in AS patients. Divergent perceptions between patients and their proxies were found in 57 % of the SLE group, in 69 % of the RA group, and in 47 % of the AS group as per WHODAS-II global score. Stronger disagreement occurred for all the three groups in domains representing cognition and interaction with other people: around 60 % in the SLE group, 80 % in the RA group, and 40 % in the AS group. A substantial proportion of family members perceived the HRQoL of rheumatic family members differently from the perception of the patients themselves, most of the time biased toward underestimation, suggesting problems in the dynamics of efficient communication and social support.

A case control study was conducted to know risk factors associated to HIV infection in Yucatan, Mexico jails. Repeated imprisonment, having more than eleven intercourses couples and having sex with other men were statistically related to HIV infection. Tattooing and intravenous drugs abuse were no significant risk factors.

The aim of this study was to evaluate daily weight gain (DWG), total dry matter (DM) intake, rumen degradability of forage, and urinary excretion of mimosine metabolites by hair sheep in a silvopastoral system with high densities of Leucaena leucocephala. A completely randomized design was carried out with two treatments: treatment 1 (T1) silvopastoral system with leucaena at a density of 35,000 plants/ha and treatment 2 (T2), leucaena at a density of 55,000 plants/ha. Leucaena was associated with tropical grasses Panicum maximum and Cynodon nlemfluensis. Twenty-four male Pelibuey lambs of 23.2 ± 3.4 kg live weight (LW) were used (12 lambs per treatment). Results showed differences (P < 0.05) in DWG of T1 (106.41 ± 11.66 g(-1) sheep(-1)) with respect to that of T2 (81.33 ± 11.81 g(-1) sheep). Voluntary intake was higher in lambs from T1 (83.81 ± 04.07 g DM/kg LW(0.75)) with respect to that from T2 (71.67 ± 8.12 g DM/kg LW(0.75)). There was a difference in color of urine between sheep of T1 and T2, the latter giving positive results for the presence of metabolites derived from mimosine (3-4 dihydroxypyridine and 2-3 dihydroxy pyridone). Rumen degradability of DM of L. leucocephala was higher (P < 0.05) compared to that of P. maximum and C. nlemfluensis (72.94 ± 0.40 vs. 67.06 ± 1.50 and 63.25 ± 1.51 %, respectively). It is concluded that grazing at high densities of L. leucocephala affects daily weight gain of hair sheep, possibly due to ingestion of high amounts of mimosine which may exert an adverse effect on voluntary intake.

Whole pod and seeds of velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) were included in diets for growing sheep used to validate previously estimated ME values of 9.7 MJ and 12.6 MJ for whole pod and seed respectively. Twenty-four lambs, 15 females and nine males of 18.7 ± 2.4 kg average weight, were allocated in three treatments using a completely randomized block design with eight replicates per treatment. Each group was given a diet with a ratio of 60% of Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) and 40% of a supplement with the addition of 0%, 50% whole pod or 66% of M. pruriens seeds, for TI, TII and TIII respectively. Diets were formulated to meet the requirements for 100-g daily live weight gain (LWG). The total dry matter intake (836 g a(-1) d(-1), forage + supplement), LWG (90 g a(-1) d(-1)) and feed conversion (9.66 kg DM/kg LWG) of lambs from TIII were lower (P < 0.05) compared to 941 g, 121 g, and 7.78 kg DM/kg LWG from TII and 976 g, 132 g and 7.50 kg DM/kg LWG from TI respectively. No difference was found (P > 0.05) between TI and TII in the three evaluated variables. The ME values of whole pod and seeds of M. pruriens used in this work were validated. It was concluded that M. pruriens can be included as a component in diets for growing sheep, as a partial replacement of conventional feedstuffs.

A prospective, descriptive study was conducted at the Trauma and Orthopedics Service from January 1st, 2006 to January 1st, 2009; all patients with a diagnosis of open pelvic fracture were included. A total of 112 patients with pelvic fracture were seen at the Emergency Room; 12 of them with an open pelvic fracture; 75% were males, most of them ages 31 to 45 years of age; they were stabilized with a circular pelvic binder and external fixators with a V technique; a gastrointestinal bypass with colostomy was performed; 3 patients died within the first few hours due to hypovolemic shock, 5 survived a mean of 25 days and died due to other causes, and four patients were discharged alive. These lesions have a mortality rate of 66.66%; mediate mortality resulting from massive bleeding occurred in 25% and survival was 33.33%. The most frequent fractures (39.28%) according to the Tile classification were type C, which are the most unstable ones; according to the Bircher-Hargrove classification, most cases were type C, which are the most severe lesions and involve a high mortality rate and risk of contamination; it is therefore important to perform a gastrointestinal bypass and an emergency colostomy as part of the initial patient management.

There are many plants in Mexico with medicinal properties, some of them used in alternative medicine to treat cancer, such is the case of Rhoeo discolor L. Hér Hance (Commelinaceae family); however, there are not scientific reports that validate their antitumoral property. The present study shows the protective effects of the Rhoeo discolor aqueous crude extract (ACE) against rat liver cancer using the resistant-hepatocyte model. The carcinogenesis protocol consisted on the initiation with N-diethylnitrosamine, followed by the promotion with 2-acetylaminofluorene and a partial hepatectomy. After 24 days, the gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase positive, corresponding to altered hepatocytes foci (AHF), were quantified. Additionally to discard a possible carcinogenic effect of ACE, it was first tested as promoting agent instead 2-acetylaminofluorene, and second, ACE was administered as initiator and promoter instead of the whole carcinogenic treatment. In summary, firstly, ACE administration reduced the number and area of preneoplastic lesions with dose below 20mg/kg body weight and secondly, ACE administration neither presented a promoting or initiator effects nor induced the development of AHF. Results of this investigation justify continuing with further studies of Rhoeo discolor components to develop chemoprevention strategies as an option in the treatment of cancer.
