The monarch butterfly is a flagship species and pollinator whose populations have declined by 85% in the recent two decades. Their largest population overwinters in Mexico, then disperses across eastern North America during March to August. During September-December, they return south using two flyways, one that spans the central United States and another that follows the Atlantic coast. Migrating monarchs fly diurnally and roost in groups nocturnally. We sought to determine the criteria this species uses to select roost sites, and the landscape context where those sites are found. We developed species distribution models of the landscape context of Atlantic flyway roost sites via citizen scientist observations and environmental variables that affect monarchs in the adult stage prior to migration, using two algorithms (Maximum Entropy and Genetic Algorithm for Ruleset Prediction). We developed two model validation methods: a citizen scientist smartphone application and peer-informed comparisons with aerial imagery. Proximity to surface water, elevation, and vegetative cover were the most important criteria for monarch roost site selection. Our model predicted 2.6 million ha (2.9% of the study area) of suitable roosting habitat in the Atlantic flyway, with the greatest availability along the Atlantic coastal plain and Appalachian Mountain ridges. Conservation of this species is difficult, as monarchs range over both large areas and various habitat types, and most current monarch research and conservation efforts are focused on the breeding and overwintering periods. Dermatological complaints constitute a large portion of patient visits to both emergency departments and military clinics. Proper assessment to separate the benign diagnoses from life-threatening may prove challenging based on seemingly non-specific history and physical examination. Similarly, reflexive specialty consultation may delay treatment and overload the health care system. Phytophotodermatitis is caused by contact with sensitizing agents, including lime juice, which triggers localized skin reactions when exposed to ultraviolet A light. The resulting progression of erythema, edema, pain, and non-pruritic skin lesions presents a unique pattern limited to the area of initial psoralen contact. This uniquely limited pattern coupled with specific historical context provides evidence for diagnosis. We highlight the case of a 24-year- old otherwise healthy female returning from a leisure trip to Mexico with progressive worsening of erythematous bullae limited to her hands and wrists bilaterally, ultimately attributed to phytophotodermatitis from lime wedge exposure in her alcoholic beverages, commonly referred to as "Mexican Beer Hand." Fire exclusion was first implemented across large areas of California and other areas of western North America in the late 19th or early 20th centuries but few studies have investigated how forests in the early decades after this decision were impacted. Jeffrey pine-mixed conifer forests of northern Baja California, Mexico, offer an area where this can be examined since fire suppression did not begin until the early 1970's. We use repeated forest and fuel measurements taken over a 25-year period (1998–2023) and found significant changes in forest structure and fuel loads (increased tree density, fine fuel loads, large fuel loads, snag density, snag basal area) that together clearly demonstrate the cumulative effects of fire removal. Interestingly, Jeffrey pine became more dominant despite the lack of recent fire, which is counter to the shift towards more shade-tolerant tree species observed in many other fire-suppressed, frequent-fire forests in the western US. Although these changes in Baja California forests point towards increased fire hazard, they are still in relatively low hazard conditions compared to long-fire suppressed forests in the western US. Prescribed fire or managed wildfire could easily be applied to counter the increased fuel loads and tree densities detected in this work, without the need for mechanical manipulation. In addition to maintaining resilient forests, using fire will reduce the risk of losing the large astronomical observatory at this site to wildfire. Restoration and stewardship of resilient forest structures similar to those in Baja California is the only way forward to conserve similar forests of the Sierra Nevada, southern California mountains, and elsewhere in the western US. • Wildfires are impacting large areas of the western US forests. • Early fire suppression impacts are modest but are increasing hazards in the Sierra San Pedro Martir. • Prescribed fire can easily be used today in Baja California, Mexico, forests. • Prescribed fire can maintain high forest resiliency and protect the large telescope at this site. Abstract: The cultural practices associated with Euro-American settlement in the United States have altered forest structure and ultimately changed fundamental ecosystem processes. Coarse woody debris (CWD) and canopy cover are recognized as having great importance for many wildlife species and ecological processes. Little information is available from forests on historical levels of canopy cover and CWD before European settlement. A great deal of uncertainty exists concerning the long-term role of fire and the dynamics of CWD, especially in forests that once experienced frequent, low-moderate intensity fire regimes. The objective of this study was to quantify CWD and forest canopy cover in an area where harvesting has never occurred and limited fire suppression began in the 1970s. This study was done in Jeffrey pine-mixed conifer forests in the Sierra San Pedro Martir (SSPM) in northwestern Mexico. Canopy cover, canopy closure, and CWD were sampled on a grid of plots. Average canopy cover was 26.8%, average canopy closure was 40.1%. A total of 102 CWD pieces were measured, and nearly half of the plots (45.7%) had no CWD present. Average CWD density, percent cover, volume, and weight were 108piecesha−1, 1.5%, 47.5m3 ha−1, and 15.7tonnesha−1, respectively. All of the CWD sampled were in the later stages of decay. Less than average values for CWD density, percent cover, volume, and weight were recorded in 57%, 64%, 67%, and 69% of the plots, respectively. CWD dynamics in forests that experience frequent, low-moderate intensity fires are fundamentally different than those having long-interval, high-severity fires. There was a large amount of variability in all CWD and forest canopy cover measurements taken from Jeffrey pine-mixed conifer forests in the SSPM. Spatial heterogeneity in forest structure should be included in the desired conditions of xeric, pine-dominated forests in the United States that once experienced frequent, low-moderate intensity fire regimes. It should be noted that heterogeneity by itself may not lead to sustainable forests unless that heterogeneity includes stand structures that are resistant/resilient to high-severity fire, drought, insects, and disease. Frequent-fire forests were once heterogeneous at multiple spatial scales, which contributed to their resilience to severe fire. While many studies have characterized historical spatial patterns in frequent-fire forests, fewer studies have investigated their temporal dynamics. We investigated the influences of fire and climate on the timing of conifer recruitment in old-growth Jeffrey pine-mixed conifer forests in the Sierra San Pedro Martir (SSPM) and the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada. Additionally, we evaluated the impacts of fire exclusion and recent climate change on recruitment levels using statistical models with realized as well as fire suppression and climate change-free counterfactual scenarios. Excessive soil drying from anthropogenic climate change resulted in diminished recruitment in the SSPM but not in the Sierra Nevada. Longer fire-free intervals attributable to fire suppression and exclusion resulted in greater rates of recruitment across all sites but was particularly pronounced in the Sierra Nevada, where suppression began >100 years ago and recruitment was 28 times higher than the historical fire return interval scenario. This demonstrates the profound impact of fire's removal on tree recruitment in Sierra Nevada forests even in the context of recent climate change. Tree recruitment at the SSPM coincided with the early-20th-century North American pluvial, as well as a fire-quiescent period in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Episodic recruitment occurred in the SSPM with no "average" recruitment over the last three centuries. We found that temporal heterogeneity, in conjunction with spatial heterogeneity, are critical components of frequent-fire-adapted forests. Episodic recruitment could be a desirable characteristic of frequent-fire-adapted forests, and this might be more amenable to climate change impacts that forecast more variable precipitation patterns in the future. Historical forest conditions are often used to inform contemporary management goals because historical forests are considered to be resilient to ecological disturbances. The General Land Office (GLO) surveys of the late 19th and early 20th centuries provide regionally quasi-contiguous data sets of historical forests across much of the Western United States. Multiple methods exist for estimating tree density from point-based sampling such as the GLO surveys, including distance-based and area-based approaches. Area-based approaches have been applied in California mixed-conifer forests but their estimates have not been validated. To assess the accuracy and precision of plotless density estimators with potential for application to GLO data in this region, we imposed a GLO sampling scheme on six mapped forest stands of known densities (159-784 trees/ha) in the Sierra Nevada in California, USA, and Baja California Norte, Mexico. We compared three distance-based plotless density estimators (Cottam, Pollard, and Morisita) as well as two Voronoi area (VA) estimators, the Delincé and mean harmonic Voronoi density (MHVD), to the true densities. We simulated sampling schemes of increasing intensity to assess sampling error. The relative error (RE) of density estimates for the GLO sampling scheme ranged from 0.36 to 4.78. The least biased estimate of tree density in every stand was obtained with the Morisita estimator and the most biased was obtained with the MHVD estimator. The MHVD estimates of tree density were 1.2-3.8 times larger than the true densities and performed best in stands subject to fire exclusion for 100 yr. The Delincé approach obtained accurate estimates of density, implying that the Voronoi approach is theoretically sound but that its application in the MHVD was flawed. The misapplication was attributed to two causes: (1) the use of a crown scaling factor that does not correct for the number of trees sampled and (2) the persistent underestimate of the true VA due to a weak relationship between tree size and VA. In Mediterranean environments in western North America, historic fire regimes in frequent-fire conifer forests are highly variable both temporally and spatially. This complexity influenced forest structure and spatial patterns, but some of this diversity has been lost due to anthropogenic disruption of ecosystem processes, including fire. Information from reference forest sites can help management efforts to restore forests conditions that may be more resilient to future changes in disturbance regimes and climate. In this study, we characterize tree spatial patterns using four-ha stem maps from four old-growth, Jeffrey pine-mixed conifer forests, two with active-fire regimes in northwestern Mexico and two that experienced fire exclusion in the southern Sierra Nevada. Most of the trees were in patches, averaging six to 11 trees per patch at 0.007 to 0.014 ha(-1), and occupied 27-46% of the study areas. Average canopy gap sizes (0.04 ha) covering 11-20% of the area were not significantly different among sites. The putative main effects of fire exclusion were higher densities of single trees in smaller size classes, larger proportion of trees (≥ 56%) in large patches (≥ 10 trees), and decreases in spatial complexity. While a homogenization of forest structure has been a typical result from fire exclusion, some similarities in patch, single tree, and gap attributes were maintained at these sites. These within-stand descriptions provide spatially relevant benchmarks from which to manage for structural heterogeneity in frequent-fire forest types.
