Sarcopenia is defined by the presence of decreased skeletal muscle mass, strength, and functionality in older people. Multicomponent interventions represent an alternative to non-pharmacological treatment for preventing disease progression. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a multicomponent intervention approach in women at risk of sarcopenia. Methods: A quasi-experimental pilot study of 12 weeks was conducted, with 24 sessions of dancing and resistance exercises and 12 sessions of nutritional education. The outcomes were changes in muscle mass, grip strength, gait speed, and body composition. The project was registered on Clinical Trials: NCT06038500 (14 September 2023). Results: Twelve women aged 55–75 years participated in this study; after the intervention, changes were found in the following variables: grip strength, from 18.70 (17.98–19.23) at baseline to 21.57 (20.67–23.16) kg (p = 0.002); gait speed, from 0.95 (0.81–1.18) at baseline to 1.34 (1.20–1.47) m/s (p = 0.003); and hip circumference, from 99.75 (94.75–110.37) at baseline to 97.65 (93.92–109.50) cm (p = 0.023). Other measurements that appeared without changes were appendicular skeletal muscle mass, from 21.17 (18.58–22.33) at baseline to 20.77 (18.31–22.39) kg (p = 0.875), and the appendicular skeletal muscle mass index, from 8.64 (8.08–9.35) at baseline to 8.81 (7.91–9.38) kg/m
2 (p = 0.875) after the intervention. Conclusions: The three-month multicomponent intervention in women at risk of sarcopenia improved their grip strength and gait speed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Objectives: We focused our study on examining the genotype and allele frequency of IL-6 (rs1800795), TNF-α (rs1800629) and IL-10 (rs1800872) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) on preeclampsia (PE) diagnosed Mexican pregnant women. Material and methods: A case-control study was designed including 86 preeclampsia patients and 100 normotensives pregnancies from Women's Hospital of Culiacan, Mexico. Genotyping of IL-6, TNF-α and IL-10 was performed using TaqMan SNP Genotyping. Results: Not significant association was found between development of PE and genotypic (p > 0.05) and allelic (p > 0.05) frequencies of IL-6, TNF-α and IL-10 SNPs. Genotype distributions of IL-6 (p = 0.599), TNF-α (p = 0.721) and IL-10 (p = 0.761) polymorphisms in the two groups were in agreement with Hardy--Weinberg equilibrium. Conclusions: According to the findings, the IL-6, TNF-α and IL-10 SNPs are not exponents of susceptibility to developing PE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Playful Learning Landscapes promote learning in community spaces. • Familismo , heritage representation, and the use of meaningful community spaces were important values for Latine families. • Cultural games, outdoor activities, and food routines were prominent STEM learning contexts in Latine families. • Co-created designs aligned families' funds of knowledge with play and early STEM principles. • Culturally situated environments increases the accessibility of informal STEM opportunities. Children from underserved, minoritized, and immigrant families have less access to early out-of-school STEM learning opportunities. Playful Learning Landscapes increase the accessibility of early STEM learning in everyday public spaces (e.g., bus stops, grocery stores) by merging principles of guided play and STEM learning goals with local community's values. We used community-based design research to (1) identify Latine families' funds of knowledge related to play, science, and math learning, and (2) create designs for playful environments merging families' values and practices with guided play and STEM learning principles. Our design partners were 32 parents, primarily Spanish-speaking immigrant mothers from Mexico, and two directors of a local community organization. The design process consisted of co-design sessions, interviews, inductive thematic analysis, elaboration, playtest and feedback, and iteration. Our findings showed that familismo , heritage representation, and the meaning of community spaces influenced the ways families engaged in STEM learning and the learning environments they desired in their community. Moreover, families' STEM practices were rooted in everyday experiences of playing cultural games, family food routines, and outdoor activities. Incorporating Latine parents in the design process and leveraging their funds of knowledge resulted in culturally situated designs aligned with playful and STEM learning principles. This study contributes to knowledge of Latine families' values and practices that can help create home-community connections to strengthen children's learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Patients with anti- N -methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor encephalitis (ANMDARE) show a wide range of behavioral abnormalities and are often mistaken for primary psychiatric presentations. We aimed to determine the behavioral hallmarks of ANMDARE with the use of systematic neuropsychiatric and cognitive assessments. Methods: A prospective study was conducted, with 160 patients admitted to the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery of Mexico, who fulfilled criteria for possible autoimmune encephalitis and/or red flags along a time window of seven years. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) antibodies against the NR1 subunit of the NMDAR were processed with rat brain immunohistochemistry and cell-based assays with NMDA expressing cells. Systematic cognitive, neuropsychiatric, and functional assessments were conducted before knowing NMDAR antibodies results. A multivariate analysis was used to compare patients with and without definite ANMDARE according to antibodies in CSF. Results: After obtaining the CSF antibodies results in 160 consecutive cases, 100 patients were positive and classified as having definite ANMDARE. The most frequent neuropsychiatric patterns were psychosis (81%), delirium (75%), catatonia (69%), anxiety-depression (65%), and mania (27%). Cognition was significantly impaired. A total of 34% of the patients had a predominantly neuropsychiatric presentation without seizures. After multivariate analysis, the clinical hallmarks of ANMDARE consisted of a catatonia–delirium comorbidity, tonic-clonic seizures, and orolingual dyskinesia. Conclusions: Our study supports the notion of a neurobehavioral phenotype of ANMDARE characterized by a fluctuating course with psychotic and affective symptoms, catatonic signs, and global cognitive dysfunction, often accompanied by seizures and dyskinesia. The catatonia–delirium comorbidity could be a distinctive neurobehavioral phenotype of ANMDARE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lupinus is a wide genus, comprising between 300 and 500 species, most of them represented in America. Mexico is a secondary distribution center with more than 100 species growing along the highlands. Due to morphological similarities, the taxonomy of wild Lupinus species is still incomplete. It is, therefore, useful to collect morphological, chemical, and molecular data for the correct differentiation of these plants. In the present work, the composition of the seed proteins of four species: Lupinus aschenbornii Schauer, Lupinus campestris Cham and Schlecht, Lupinus hintonii C.P. Smith, and Lupinus montanus Kunth were analyzed. Seeds were collected at Iztaccihuatl—Popocatepetl National Park. Both total proteins and single protein families, purified by chromatographic procedures, were analyzed by SDS-PAGE and 2D-electrophoresis and by LC-MS/MS analysis. Data were compared with those of domesticated species whose proteomes had been already described in the literature. The protein profile may be useful for species identification since they have specific characteristics in each single species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The purpose of this article was to describe our experience with the prenatal diagnosis of CHD in patients referred to our Fetal Cardiology Unit. Methods: Prospective cohort study of consecutive fetuses referred for advanced fetal echocardiography to our Fetal Cardiology Unit during a 3-year period (September 2015-September 2018).Results: Totally 809 fetuses were evaluated, with 1263 fetal advanced echocardiographies performed. Suspected cardiac abnormality was the most common indication for referral (62.2%). Only 7.3% of patients had known morbidities or risk factors for CHD. Mean gestational age at first examination was 25.6 ± 6.4 weeks. A total of 528 (65.3%) fetuses were found to have a cardiac defect: 40.7% had isolated CHD while 24.6% had associated anomalies. The most common defects found were ventricular septal defects (20.3%), followed by conotruncal defects (9.7%), hypoplastic left heart syndrome (9.3%), fetal arrhythmias (8.9%), and venous anomalies (8.7%). 31.6% presented abnormal genetic studies, the most frequent being Down syndrome (23/212, 10.8%), followed by DiGeorge syndrome (11/212, 5.2%).Conclusions: Prenatal screening and diagnosis of CHD in Mexico are feasible, with suspected cardiac abnormality being the main reason for referral to a specialized Fetal Cardiology Unit. Efforts must be made to make screening available to the general population in the first and second trimesters of pregnancy by fetal medicine or trained specialists, in order to identify fetal CHD and offer advanced echocardiography, genetic studies, timely fetal cardiac intervention in selected cases, and delivery in tertiary centers, to improve overall survival. Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.), one of the five domesticated Phaseolus bean crops, shows a wide range of ecological adaptations along its distribution range from Mexico to Argentina. These adaptations make it a promising crop for improving food security under predicted scenarios of climate change in Latin America and elsewhere. In this work, we combine long and short read sequencing technologies with a dense genetic map from a biparental population to obtain the chromosome-level genome assembly for Lima bean. Annotation of 28,326 gene models show high diversity among 1917 genes with conserved domains related to disease resistance. Structural comparison across 22,180 orthologs with common bean reveals high genome synteny and five large intrachromosomal rearrangements. Population genomic analyses show that wild Lima bean is organized into six clusters with mostly non-overlapping distributions and that Mesomerican landraces can be further subdivided into three subclusters. RNA-seq data reveal 4275 differentially expressed genes, which can be related to pod dehiscence and seed development. We expect the resources presented here to serve as a solid basis to achieve a comprehensive view of the degree of convergent evolution of Phaseolus species under domestication and provide tools and information for breeding for climate change resiliency. Lima bean is an important crop for improving food security in Latin America and elsewhere. Here, the authors assemble its genome, conduct population genomics analysis using genotyping-by-sequencing data, and identify differentially expressed genes between two pod developmental stages. Purpose: To compare the perception of the quality of life (QOL) of community-dwelling older adults with the phenotype of frailty. Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of baseline data of the "Cohort of Obesity, Sarcopenia and Frailty of Mexican Older Adults" (COSFOMA). Operationalization of frailty was carried out using the phenotype as follows: weight loss, self-report of exhaustion, low physical activity, slow gait, and weakness. QOL was measured using two scales: World Health Organization Quality of Life of Older Adults (WHOQOL-OLD), which is a specific instrument for the elderly population, and Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36), a generic instrument to evaluate the QOL related to health. One-way analyses of variance were conducted to assess the differences among the three phenotypes of frailty and QOL perception. Results: There were 1252 older adult participants who were analyzed; 11.2% (n = 140) had frailty, 50.3% (n = 630) pre-frailty and 38.5% (n = 482) were not frail. The mean (±SD) total score of the WHOQOL-OLD according to the phenotype of frailty was 60.3 (13.9) for those with frailty, 67.4 (12.7) pre-frailty and 72.4 (11.2) not frail (ANOVA, p < 0.001). The mean (±SD) of the SF-36 of the physical and mental component measures the sum, 38.9 (9.9) and 41.9 (11.3) with frailty, 45.7 (9.1) and 46.6 (9.8) pre-frailty, and 49.6 (7.3) and 49.4 (7.9) not frail, respectively (ANOVA, p < 0.001).Conclusions: Frailty is observed in 1/10 community-dwelling older adults. Those with frailty and pre-frailty had a lower perception of QOL compared with those who were not frail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Aim: There is a lack of studies related to the frequency, phenomenology, and associated features of catatonic syndrome in patients with anti‐NMDA receptor encephalitis (ANMDARE). This study aimed to measure the frequency of catatonia in this condition and to delineate its particular symptoms. Methods: A prospective study was done with all inpatients who fulfilled the criteria of definite ANMDARE admitted to the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery of Mexico from January 2014 to September 2018. The Bush–Francis Catatonia Rating Scale and Braünig Catatonia Rating Scale were administered at admission. Results: Fifty‐eight patients were included and catatonia was diagnosed in 41 of these patients (70.6%). Immobility, staring, mutism, and posturing were the most frequent catatonic signs. Catatonia was associated with delirium, hallucinations, psychomotor agitation, generalized electroencephalography dysfunction, and previous use of antipsychotics. Mortality was present in 10% of the total sample; it was associated with status epilepticus, and was less frequent in the catatonia group. After immunotherapy, all cases showed a complete recovery from catatonic signs. Conclusion: This systematic assessment of catatonic syndrome shows that it is a frequent feature in patients with ANMDARE as part of a clinical pattern that includes delirium, psychomotor agitation, and hallucinations. The lack of recognition of this pattern may be a source of diagnostic and therapeutic errors, as most physicians associate catatonia with schizophrenia and affective disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of the study was to know the perception of patients about the empathy of the nurses in the city of Monterrey, Mexico. A qualitative design with a phenomenological and exploratory approach was used. The sample consisted of people who were hospitalized for at least three days and aged 18 years to 35 years. It was obtained that although the patients stated that they were adequately cared for by the nurses, they also stated that they were not asked for opinions regarding care, as well as a lack of interest in the personal life of patients. Likewise, they mentioned the good skills nurses have to take care of patients, but they perceived that they had little initiative on their part in the crisis situations that they experienced. It is necessary to continue to preparing nurses in terms of communication, considering the option of patients and taking into account the personal life of the patients, being able to use it as a recovery factor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study examines the role of ethnic-racial socialization (ERS) and maternal autonomy granting in predicting ethnic-racial identity (ERI) exploration, resolution, and affirmation trajectories in a sample of Mexican-origin girls (N = 338) in early and middle adolescence at Wave 1. Latent growth curve analyses showed significant growth in ERI exploration, resolution, and affirmation over 3.5 years. ERS, autonomy granting, and their interaction were associated with ERI trajectories. Results also indicated significant differences between early and middle adolescents in the association between ERS, autonomy granting, and ERI exploration trajectories. Findings demonstrate the importance of concurrently examining contextual and developmental predictors of ERI formation. In addition, ERS may be particularly important for ERI development among early adolescents, whereas autonomy processes and development may play a more prominent role during middle adolescence. Public Significance Statement: This study advances knowledge regarding the development of ethnic-racial identity among Mexican-origin girls. It provides avenues for promoting positive ethnic-racial identity development by demonstrating the role of autonomy granting and ethnic-racial socialization in its formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EFFECT of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on plants ,APPLE diseases & pests ,PLANT cuticle - Abstract
This paper describes PAH concentrations in apple crops that are growing in rural terrains in Mexico City. The concentrations of individual PAHs showed great variability, there being low and high molecular weight compounds in dry (high molecular weight for Tlahuac 7.06 μg/g and Milpa Alta 3.96 μg/g) and wet months (high molecular weight for Tlahuac 11.25 μg/g and Milpa Alta 12.05 μg/g). Some PAHs indicators and cross plot ratios Ant/(Ant + Phe) and Flu/(Flu + Pyr) define fossil fuels and vegetation combustion as the source of contamination over the cuticle of the apples. It is likely that deposition (dry and wet) is the principal source o f contamination over the apple surface. This study reveals the presence of PAHs in apples due to the high air contamination of Mexico City. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The state of Nayarit occupies a strategic position in Mexico; it encompasses the vertex of three important mountain ranges (Eje Volcánico Transversal, Sierra Madre Occidental and Sierra Madre del Sur); this largely determines its high floristic diversity. In the state, Asteraceae is the most diverse family of flowering plants, with 122 genera and 447 species. This paper includes an updated list of species of Asteraceae found in Nayarit and this diversity is compared to that found in the neighbouring states. A list of the endemic species to Nayarit is also included. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This column provides an overview of child and adolescent mental health services in Mexico, where prevalence rates of mental disorders among young people are up to twice as high as U.S. and Canadian rates. The mental health care system in Mexico is underdeveloped and underfunded, and for the approximately 40% of the population with no insurance, access to and quality of care are particularly poor. This column offers policy recommendations aimed at better meeting the needs of this vulnerable population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Genomic selection has been proposed for the mitigation of methane (CH
4 ) emissions by cattle because there is considerable variability in CH4 emissions between individuals fed on the same diet. The genome-wide association study (GWAS) represents an important tool for the detection of candidate genes, haplotypes or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) markers related to characteristics of economic interest. The present study included information for 280 cows in three dairy production systems in Mexico: 1) Dual Purpose (n = 100), 2) Specialized Tropical Dairy (n = 76), 3) Familiar Production System (n = 104). Concentrations of CH4 in a breath of individual cows at the time of milking (MEIm) were estimated through a system of infrared sensors. After quality control analyses, 21,958 SNPs were included. Associations of markers were made using a linear regression model, corrected with principal component analyses. In total, 46 SNPs were identified as significant for CH4 production. Several SNPs associated with CH4 production were found at regions previously described for quantitative trait loci of composition characteristics of meat, milk fatty acids and characteristics related to feed intake. It was concluded that the SNPs identified could be used in genomic selection programs in developing countries and combined with other datasets for global selection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

BEEF cattle , *CATTLE , *CATTLE weight , *SIMMENTAL cattle , *GENETIC variation , *ZEBUS , *HEIFERS , *CATTLE fertility - Abstract
The National Institute of Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research in Mexico has been active for decades in researching genetic improvement in beef cattle. This review uses master theses, congress papers and scientific articles published from 1987 to 2020 to summarize much of the relevant research, and addresses research challenges and outlook over the short-, medium- and long-term in this area. Research done over the last 34 yr has evaluated the productive and reproductive performance of Bos indicus and Bos taurus x Bos indicus beef cattle raised under tropical conditions. Multibreed genetic evaluations have been done for Simmental-Simbrah and Charolais-Charbray populations in Mexico. Analyses have quantified the importance of maternal effects on growth traits, and estimated heritability and genetic correlations for growth and reproductive traits in male and female Bos taurus and Bos indicus animals. The genotype-environment interaction has been confirmed to influence expression of weaning weight in Simmental cattle. Age adjustment factors have been developed for maternal age for weights at birth and weaning, and prototypes of national genetic evaluation were developed for stayability and heifer fertility. Genetic diversity has been quantified for Simmental, Charolais and Simbrah populations, and SNPs identified that are associated with growth traits in Simmental and Simbrah populations. Short-term goals include development of selection indices and prediction of the genetic merit of carcass traits. Over the medium-term, emphasis is needed on genomic evaluations for tolerance to heat stress, residual feed intake and health traits, while in the long-term the goal is to make interbreed genomic predictions.
