Purpose: Identify the national landscape of research on long supply circuits as a driving force for agroecology in Mexico. Methodology: Five databases were used to search for articles published between 2017 and 2023 using keywords such as "long supply circuit" and "agroecology". Theoretical and practical findings: A referential analysis was obtained on the relationship between long supply circuits and agroecology in the maize system in Mexico, highlighting a research gap. Transdisciplinarity and sustainability innovation originality: This recent and updated study contributes to state of the art in applying agroecology and long supply circuit in agricultural production systems. Conclusions and limitations: More research is needed on long supply chains as a tool to promote the efficiency of agroecological systems at a commercial scale. The information provided in this work is a scientific look at the state of the art of growing rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.) in Mexico, with special emphasis on its production as a main element in a multicultural system and the use of coverage as alternatives agroecological After a thorough review of the written information, it was found that this fruit is a viable option to increase the biodiversity of agroecosystems with tangible socioeconomic contributions and as an alternative contribution to monocultures such as African palm in the country with special significance for the Chiapas State, the establishment of this fruit as a food crop, for its high nutritional value, could be within the options as a regulatory food, within the agroecosystems, likewise, it constitutes an alternative production necessary for its adaptability to the manifest effects of irregularities as a result of climate change. In the present work a description is made about the development of rambutan cultivation in Mexico. The main scientific results obtained in the country are addressed to achieve productive and marketable successes at national and international level, the main obstacles and opportunities for their production are exposed by conventional and agroecological methods, their advantages and disadvantages. The results of a diagnosis made in a town of Villa Comaltitlán Municipality in Chiapas are presented. Finally, the reasons why it is necessary to start a training process based on the results of the investigations initiated a decade ago of having established the rambutan in this locality are observed. Objective: Quantify the development and production of kale (Brassica oleracea var. Acephala cultivar "dwarf blue curled") in field conditions with organic and mineral fertilization. Design/methodology: Kale was sown in a field in a completely rando design with five treatments and five repetitions per treatment (mineral soil fertilization, organic soil fertilization, mineral soil fertilization and foliar fertilization, organic soil fertilization and foliar fertilization and a control). After transplanting (dat) every 15 days in situ, the number of leaves was quantified and the phenological stages of the crop were identified. At 116 dat, with destructive sampling, the number length, fresh weight, resistance to penetration and ascorbic acid content in the kale leaves were quantified. Results: The growth kinetics of the plants in the organic soil and foliar fertilization excelled, compared to the other treatments. In the cuttings, 1.5 to 3 bunches per plant were obtained, the resistance increased in leaves with organic products. Ascorbic acid increased in the leaves with all fertilizations. Limitations implications: limited knowledge in the crop's management. Conclusions: Kale is a crop that responds to different fertilization sources. Organic soil and foliar fertilization are alternatives for kale agroecological production, It's a vegetable scarcely grown in Mexico. The crop can be produced in the Texcoco area. Objective: The objective is to know the qualities of vegetable producers who sell in agroecological street markets in San Andrés Cholula and Puebla. Methodology: Producers were censused and surveyed. Results: 16 producers were interviewed, basically young-adults, landowners where they have been applying various agroecological practices for the last seven years. Family work and female participation were highlighted, in addition to the fact that 87% achieved food self-sufficiency. The producers perceived the environmental situation of their localities as good-regular. They have been promoting agroecological production for personal and public health; the greatest satisfaction is the recognition of the quality of their products. Most of them studied university degrees and inherited agriculture by tradition. Limitations: The study relied on truthful information declared by the producers. Social movements are using education to generate critical consciousness regarding the social and environmental unsustainability of the current food system, and advocate for agroecological production. In this article, we explore results from a cross-case analysis of six social movements that are using education as a strategy to advance food sovereignty. We conducted participatory research with diverse rural and urban social movements in the United States, Brazil, Cuba, Bolivia, and Mexico, which are each educating for food sovereignty. We synthesize insights from critical food systems education and the political ecology of education in analyzing these cases. We compare the thematic similarities and difference between these movements' education initiatives in terms of their emergence, initial goals, expansion and institutionalization, relationship to the state, theoretical inspirations, pedagogical approach, educational topics, approach to student research, and outcomes. Among these thematic areas, we find that student-centered research on competing forms of production is an integral way to advance critical consciousness about the food system and the political potential of agroecological alternatives. However, what counts, as success in these programs, is highly case-dependent. Coffee is one of the tropical crops of great relevance. Mexico occupies one of the first places to produce it. Chiapas is the state that contributes the most significant amount of grain to the national and international market, harvested by organized groups such as cooperatives of origin indigenous. In these regions, cultivation is divided into five stages: cultivation, harvest, wet processing, dry processing and roasting. Thus, the agroecological approach based on the agroforestry system of coffee in the community of Ocotepec allowed generating an intercultural dialogue with a Zoque indigenous cooperative, where its members expressed the need to develop information regarding their production process and thus take the relevant decisions. Concerning environmental impacts. The life cycle analysis was applied as a methodological tool to evaluate the process of producing a kilogram of ground coffee in its honey and specialty varieties offered to the national market, showing the most significant impacts for both types of coffee. Cultivation level (water consumption around 80% and land use with effects close to 98%), wet processing (impacting the ecotoxicity of water sources close to 99% followed by marine ecotoxicity with 73%) and in its distribution stage affecting at least 15 environmental categories, likewise, comparative tests were carried out to calculate the carbon footprint and the water footprint, with shade-grown honey coffee being the type of coffee that has the most negligible environmental impact and contributes the most profits to the cooperative. This article explains how an interracial alliance that promotes a radical restructuring of agriculture, featuring African American small-scale producers, farmers of Euro-American descent, Latino farmworkers, and Indigenous people, has come into existence. As I argue, this coalition formed due to changes in international political economy and within transnational activist networks. Specifically, the implementation of neoliberal international trade deals beginning in the 1970s disrupted farmers' livelihoods in the Global North and South. It drove migrants from countries such as Mexico and Guatemala to the United States with their experiences of agrarian reform, and it saw US farmers simultaneously begin to engage farmers of color in new and important ways. The transnational activist networks that facilitated visits and meetings subsequently provided opportunities for activists to learn from one another and have new experiences, which, as I explore, led people from diverse backgrounds to agree on various principles and forge a common vision. The study aims to typify the diversity of grassroots initiatives in Mexico, the circumstances (e.g. historical, social, ecological) in which they emerge, and the roles and power relationships they establish with different stakeholders to promote agroecology. It addresses the need to comprehend how grassroots initiatives contribute to social change and the massification of agroecology in Mexico. Analysis was done using PCA and social network analysis from 167 surveys. Results show that grassroots initiatives impact 18 indigenous groups in the center and south of Mexico, and focus on eco-friendly production, social justice, popular education, and food markets. Initiatives started because of three tipping points that responded to neoliberal policies, relocating local food and massifying agroecology. In the literature on how to make food systems just and sustainable, we often look at Alternative Food Networks (AFN) as a way forward. AFNs are initiatives that pose alternatives to conventional food systems (driven by productivism and harmful to human and environmental health). Despite this broad understanding of what AFNs can be, in practice, most cases presented in the literature look surprisingly alike. In this article, we challenge the scholars working on alternative food networks to look beyond the narrow definition of AFNs by considering cases of traditional agriculture and distribution systems. We illustrate this argument using the case of chinampas, a traditional agricultural system in Mexico City that contributes in different ways to local sustainability. Analysing semi-structured interviews conducted on site, we argue that chinampas can be defined as an alternative food network because of their modes of production, their diverse distribution channels, and their economic practices. We conclude that traditional food systems present an alternative to conventional food systems and should therefore be included in AFN research. Broadening the definition of AFNs so to include traditional and non-institutional practices can help identify diverse cases fitting this new lens, including in the Global North; it can also contribute to affirming the value of these traditional systems in building sustainable and just societies. The causes of deforestation and forest degradation are complex and often region-specific. Socioeconomic factors have been identified as the primary driver, having a strong impact on landscape structure as they degrade or improve the ability of landscapes to provide habitats for a variety of species. Coffee agroforestry systems have great potential to provide habitats for multiple species. However, this coexistence depends on a fragile balance as most coffee producers are poor and highly vulnerable to variations in the price of agricultural products, and coffee plants are susceptible to crop pests and diseases, among other factors. We conducted an in-depth analysis of the drivers of land use change in a high-biodiversity landscape in southern Mexico where shaded coffee systems favor the connectivity of several protected natural areas. We elaborated land-use change maps using high-resolution images and conducted 106 semi-structured interviews to gather information on the causes of land-use change. The types of land cover across 7409 ha changed over ten years (2005–2015): 3658 ha (49%) due to habitat loss and degradation, 2370 ha (32%) to habitat gain, and 1381 ha (19%) to conversion from other non-forest areas. In all cases, the predominant drivers were the incidence of pests and diseases and the lack of profitability of coffee, which influenced the strategies available to producers. The volatility of coffee prices, the incidence of pests and diseases, and the lack of a sustainable national coffee policy are serious threats to the conservation of shaded coffee systems and biodiversity in this region. La Montaña, one of seven regions making up the state of Guerrero, Mexico, has high social-ecological vulnerability. Its extreme poverty and marginalization levels are among the country's highest, superimposed in a context of severe ecosystem degradation. We evaluated the social-ecological resilience of two indigenous communities of this region engaged in agroecological projects by integrating the Resilience Assessment and MESMIS methodological proposals, using qualitative and quantitative indicators. The most critical aspects were the low quality of forest fragments, crop losses through hurricanes, lack of access to information, low socioeconomic infrastructure and lack of gender equity. On the other hand, formal and informal social organization is a major strength. Crop losses due to drought or pests are not significant, but a more critical situation is foreseen in the face of climate change. Local efforts drive the main strategies to maintain a minimum level of resilience but will not be sufficient if unaccompanied by structural changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Landraces and bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars grown in Mexico are diverse, as are consumer preferences and agroecological production environments. Mexican common bean cultivars were analyzed using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) finger-printing to examine the genetic relationships within and among races, based on the genotyping of 112 bred cultivars developed in Mexico. Molecular analysis of dry bean germplasm will be useful to corroborate previous cultivar characterizations and establish the genetic basis of improved germplasm, to facilitate the use of that diversity, and to implement the use of markers in selection. Germplasm included 111 cultivars belonging to Mesoamerica (25), Jalisco (39), Durango (28), and Nueva Granada (19) races, which are commonly cultivated throughout the bean-producing areas of Mexico. A Mexican P. coccineus species cultivar (Blanco Tlaxcala) was also included for comparison. Broad genetic diversity was found within bean races, and diversity values between races were similar. Most of the Nueva Granada germplasm was clearly different from that of alt other races, whereas the P. coccineus cultivar was distinct from all P. vulgaris cultivars. A based on the AFLP analysis did not clearly match with that made on the basis of racial classification. This mismatch was probably due to genetic recombination between Andean (Nueva Granada) and Mesoamerican (Jalisco, Durango, and Mesoamerica) gene pools. Utilization of contrasting parents for specific crosses has also contributed to broadening the genetic basis of common bean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To determine whether the Agroecological Educational Center Los Álamos (Centro Educativo Agroecológico Los Álamos, CEA), located in the state of Tlaxcala, Mexico, fulfills the elements of structure and function to be identified as an agroecological beacon. Design/Methodology/Approach: A mixed approach was used (quantitative and qualitative). A study case of the CEA was constructed to understand both the context and the structural and functional characteristics that currently configure it. First, an exhaustive review of secondary information related to the structure and functioning of agroecological beacons in other regions or countries was made. In a second stage, a comparative analysis of the structural and functional characteristics of agroecological beacons was conducted with the data generated in the study case. In the third stage, factors were analyzed that make possible or limit the CEA to develop as an agroecological beacon. Results: The CEA performs and fulfills with participant youth the function of agroecological beacon, since it is an efficient tool for education, training, knowledge exchange and promotion of agroecology. This favors its dissemination and scaling in the peasant communities where the young people who participate in the CEA are from. Study Limitations/Implications: The results are only applicable to the study case due to the limitations present in this methodology in terms of its results not allowing to elaborate general explanations. Findings/Conclusions: The CEA complies with sufficient elements to catalog it as a sectorial agroecological beacon, which is contributing a methodological and strategic light to respond to the challenge of intergenerational transmission of understanding, knowledge and agroecological projects in the peasant indigenous youth sphere. The Mexican government has decided to ban imports of genetically modified (GM) maize, to rely on agroecology for maize production to satisfy domestic yellow maize requirements. No economic impact assessment of this policy decision was made public, and the implications of this decision for users of yellow maize and consumers are significant. This article measures the economic surplus generated from Mexican GM yellow maize imports and domestic conventional yellow maize production over the last 20 years, and projects the economic surplus generated over five years from adopting agroecology for yellow maize production. We explore three likely scenarios and find that in all of them, yellow maize processors lose almost twice as much economic surplus as producers. In the most conservative loss estimate (Scenario 1), the surplus loss in five years is equivalent to 35% of the economic surplus generated over the last 21 years from GM maize imports and domestic Mexican conventional production. In all simulated Scenarios, between 2024 and 2025 the price of a metric ton of yellow maize will increase 81percent because of the change in production systems (from conventional to agroecology). These financial losses will ultimately factor into the prices consumers pay for poultry and red meat products, resulting in higher domestic retail food prices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Developing countries such as Mexico have diverse food retail channels classified into three main groups: Supermarkets in their diverse variants (hypermarkets, medium and small supermarkets, and gourmet supermarkets); traditional food supply channels classified in Traditional markets, Tianguis, and grocery stores and Alternative markets. Despite the wide array of options, there is a lack of information on consumers' perceptions of these different spaces. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to analyse consumers' perceptions of Traditional markets, Tianguis, Supermarkets and Alternative markets in central Mexico. A questionnaire was applied with three sections: free word association (FWA), purchase habits and socioeconomic aspects. Four hundred and eighty consumers were surveyed, 120 in each type of market. The words mentioned during the FWA were grouped according to category and dimension and were analysed with a chi‐squared test. The relationship between categories and markets was analysed by multiple correspondence analysis and the remaining variables by descriptive statistics. Supermarkets were related to processed foods and nonfood items and were considered accessible, practical and modern spaces. Traditional markets and Tianguis were perceived as traditional and associated with social commitment and fresh foods but were also perceived as lacking in infrastructure, insecure and impractical. Alternative markets were viewed as innovative spaces offering alternative foods, albeit expensive. The interviewed consumers were mostly women. Those approached in Supermarkets and Alternative markets tended to be millennials, and in Tianguis and Traditional markets tended to belong to Generation X (born between 1965 and 1982). Also, most of those in Alternative markets had university or postgraduate degrees. In conclusion, consumers had a clear perception of the different types of markets as well as their advantages and disadvantages. This study contributes to empirical knowledge on the persistence of traditional markets and the incorporation of alternative markets in developing countries in spite of the growth of Supermarkets. Intercultural universities in Mexico have been created since 2001, currently there are 12, the last one to be created is the Intercultural University of Baja California in San Quintin. These universities are governed by an intercultural model that states that they must incorporate linguistic expressions and manifestations and knowledge of indigenous peoples in their substantive functions as well as in their scientific activity, but some of them have also incorporated cultural and sustainable expressions in their architecture. In this sense, there are experiences of these universities that incorporate different cultural and sustainable elements in their architecture. Based on the above, this study presents some experiences of Intercultural Universities in Mexico that recover cultural and sustainable elements in their architecture. Methodologically, we resorted to reflexive ethnography by conducting several interviews with the architect of the UICEH. Some of the results obtained in the research show the importance of how, through the architectural spaces, elements of interculturality and sustainability are embodied, including some related to local cultures where the Universities have an impact. Crops that offer multiple types of value, for example, in terms of economy, culture, and health, frequently lack information on the basic ecological interactions that play a significant role in their persistence. Chayote (Sechium edule, Cucurbitaceae), a widespread squash valued for its nutritious fruit, is one example. We aimed at describing the assemblage of flower visitors to this crop at 2400 m where stingless bees, reported as the main pollinators, are naturally absent. We implemented flower exclusions, performed field observations, and inspection of pollen loads of captured visitors to be able to draw distinctions between primary and secondary pollinators. We recorded a total of 60 species or morphospecies of insects visiting the flowers. Bees, wasps, and flies, present in all sites and consistently carrying abundant pollen, are the main pollinators of S. edule at high altitudes. Our study adds to the building evidence of the fundamental role that native bees and wasps play as crop pollinators in subsistence farming. Basic ecological knowledge is essential to inform agricultural management policies and to foresee preventable food scarcity problems, especially in view of climate change scenarios that predict drastic alterations in plant geographical distributions. Between 2012 and 2016 a virulent strain of coffee rust reduced Mexican yields by more than 50%, and it is still devastating production. The government has responded by replacing traditional arabica plants vulnerable to the pathogen with resistant, high-yielding varieties to recover the sector and encourage long-term adaptation to a disease that cannot be eradicated. However, this contribution will attempt to show that the intractable nature of the epidemic and the biological characteristics of resistant varieties threaten the survival of independent coffee organisations and their agroecological shade coffee systems. With little or no possibility of recovering production without the use of resistant plants, the alternative production and marketing models that these organisations have constructed over the past three decades face unprecedented challenges. In this paper we explore the depth dimension of agroecological scaling. Through interviews, focus groups and participant observation, we explore the link between agroecology and the recovery and maintenance of ecosystem functions through three case studies in peasant communities in southern Mexico. These communities have contrasting ecological, social and historical contexts, but all engage in autonomous initiatives for agroecology and nature protection. In the middle of the last century, there were two types of agronomic scientists in Mexico. One group perceived traditional agriculture as backward and in need of modernization with advanced technologies. The other group, engaged in intensive fieldwork, studied and found inspiration in peasant and indigenous systems. This latter group of researchers who studied and described the biocultural richness of these systems provided the foundations for the development of agroecology in Mexico. Mexican indigenous systems also inspired many of the pioneers of agroecology at the global level. In this review, we strive to describe the historical landmarks of the development of agroecological education and research in the past and present in Mexico, while elaborating on the challenges that this discipline faces today and in the future. In this article the author reflects on the interculturality displayed by students of Mayan Intercultural University of Quintana Roo in Mexico. He shares his experience of attending the graduation ceremony. He informs that students from small towns are given a chance to study at a place where courses are given in Mayan and Spanish. He observes that student speakers who spoke at the graduation ceremony were creating their own interculturality by recalling their rural background and culture.

Although it is the most widely accepted form of organic guarantee, third party certification can be inaccessible for small-scale producers and promotes a highly market-oriented vision of organics. By contrast, participatory guarantee systems (PGS) are based on principles of relationship-building, mutual learning, trust, context-specificity, local control, diversity, and collective action. This paper uses the case study of the Mexican Network of Local Organic Markets to explore how PGS can be used to support a more alternative vision of organics, grounded in the notion of food sovereignty. It presents some of the key challenges and opportunities associated with the approach, and highlights its potential to serve as a locally-based institution for collective action, thereby offering some structural support to alternative agri-food initiatives. Alternate food networks (AFN) in Mexico and France are seen as an anti-systemic, post-capitalist social behavior and a form of anticommodity production. We report on two local market initiatives in Mexico, comparing similar institutions in southern France. Despite the adverse situation facing peasant agriculture, consumers and producers—urban and rural—are mobilizing to vindicate the ethical, agroecological, and cultural dimensions of food and support the smallholder family economy, seeking more direct, face-to-face relationships. The participation of women in AFN is definitive, as consumers, producers, and processors, and as organizers and promoters as well. AFN are one dimension of a process of the “Return of the Peasants,” that is, ideological spaces where farmers and consumers collectively are redefining the values of the agro-food system. This article discusses the potential of coupling participatory action research (PAR) with agroecological principles to address food insecurity in indigenous communities. It argues that combining these two approaches can lead to culturally and environmentally appropriate, context-oriented strategies to empower community members and strengthen community food sovereignty and food security. This article draws on a recent study of Mayan communities in the Yucatán State, Mexico, and demonstrates the strengths of an agroecologically focused PAR approach in addressing local challenges faced by rural communities in their struggle to become food sovereign and secure, but its weakness when it comes to influencing policy overarching structures threatening community food sovereignty. In 2005, torrential rains associated with Hurricane Stan devastated farm systems in southern Mexico. We present a case study on the impacts of and responses to Hurricane Stan by coffee households in three communities in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, with the objective of illuminating the linkages between household vulnerability and resilience. We analyze data from 64 household surveys in a cluster analysis to link household impacts experienced to post-Stan adaptive responses and relate these results with landscape-level land-cover changes. The degree of livelihood change was most significant for land-constrained households whose specialization in coffee led to high exposure and sensitivity to Stan and little adaptive capacity. Across the sample, the role of coffee in livelihood strategies declined, as households sought land to secure subsistence needs and diversified economically after Stan. Nevertheless, livelihoods and landscape outcomes were not closely coupled, at least at the temporal and spatial scale of our analysis: We found no evidence of land-use change associated with farmers' coping strategies. While households held strong attitudes regarding effective resource management for risk reduction, this knowledge does not necessarily translate into capacities to manage resilience at broader scales. We argue that policy interventions are needed to help materialize local strategies and knowledge on risk management, not only to allow individual survival but also to enhance resilience at local, community and landscape scales. Significant attention has been given to the relationship between small coffee farms and biodiversity in recent years. This article argues that the interest in "bird-friendly" coffees and other forms of biodiversity marketing have much to learn from the 15-year development of another relatively successful, environmentally friendly coffee product: certified organic coffee. This Mexican case study argues that organic coffee emerged as a result of a series of institutional transformations that, in interaction with particular ecosystems, have left their imprint on the agricultural landscape. The emergence of organic coffee in Mexico arose from more than a decade of populist agrarian organizing and accompanying organizational innovations, and depended upon the substantial amount of preexisting "social capital accumulation" in the Mexican countryside. Eco-labeling efforts focus on certification criteria and marketing, and pay insufficient attention to the social processes that can lead to the outcome of a sustainable product and sustainable agricultural landscapes. Given the obvious consequences of conventional agriculture and the limitations of organic agriculture, agroecological management strategies such as Push–Pull are increasingly considered since, in addition to production purposes, these systems channel economic, ecological, and social viability of that production. The successful introduction of these systems, still little implemented outside Africa, necessarily requires field effectiveness studies of laboratory and/or greenhouse proposals. Therefore, this study evaluated the field effectiveness of Push–Pull strategies designed for the management of S. frugiperda in maize crops in Morelos, Mexico. Most of the evaluated systems presented lower levels of fall armyworm infestations than those of the maize monoculture. Mombasa—D. ambrosioides, Mulato II—T. erecta, Mulato II—C. juncea, Tanzania—T. erecta and Tanzania—D. ambrosioides systems presented higher yields and profits than those observed in monocultures. Chemical control is the main method used to combat fall armyworm in maize crops. However, its indiscriminate use usually leads to a more complex scenario characterized by loss of its effectiveness due to the development of resistance of the insect pest, emergence of secondary pests, and reduction of the populations of natural enemies. For this reason, efforts to develop strategies for agroecological pest management such as Push–Pull are increasingly growing. In this context, the present study was carried out to evaluate field effectiveness of Push–Pull systems for S. frugiperda management in maize crops in Morelos, Mexico. In a randomized block experiment, the incidence and severity of S. frugiperda, the development and yield of maize were evaluated in nine Push–Pull systems and a maize monoculture. The Push–Pull systems presented incidence/severity values lower than those of the monoculture. Morphological development and maize yield in the latter were lower than those of most Push–Pull systems.
