Inorganic aragonite occurs in a wide spectrum of depositional environments and its precipitation is controlled by complex physio‐chemical factors. This study investigates diagenetic conditions that led to aragonite cement precipitation in Cenozoic glaciomarine deposits of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. A total of 42 sandstones that host intergranular cement were collected from the CIROS‐1 core, located proximal to the terminus of Ferrar Glacier. Standard petrography, Raman spectroscopy and electron microprobe analysis reveal a prominent aragonite cement phase that occurs as a pore‐filling blocky fabric throughout the core. Oxygen isotope compositions (δ18O = −30·0 to −8·6‰ Vienna Pee‐Dee Belemnite) and clumped isotope temperatures (TΔ47 = 13·1 to 31·5°C) determined from the aragonite cements provide precise constraints on isotopic compositions (δ18Ow) of the parent fluid, which mostly range from −10·8 to −7·2‰ Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water. The fluid δ18Ow values are consistent with those of pore water, previously identified as cryogenic brine in the nearby AND‐2A core. Petrographic and geochemical data suggest that aragonite cement in the CIROS‐1 core precipitated from a similar brine. The brine likely formed and infiltrated sediments in flooded glacial valleys along the western margin of McMurdo Sound during the middle Miocene Climatic Transition, and subsequently flowed basinward in the subsurface. Consequently, the brine forms as a longstanding subsurface fluid that has saturated Cenozoic sediments below southern McMurdo Sound since at least the middle Miocene. Aragonite cementation in the CIROS‐1 core is interpreted to reflect its proximal position to sites of brine formation and greater likelihood of experiencing brines with sustained high carbonate saturation states and Mg/Ca ratios. This unusual occurrence expands the range of known natural occurrences of aragonite cement. Given the potential for cryogenic brine formation in glaciomarine settings, blocky aragonite, as the end member of the spectrum of aragonite cement morphology, may be more widespread in glaciomarine sediments than currently thought. The Victoria Land Basin forms part of the failed West Antarctic Rift, and preserves a Cenozoic succession up to 4 km thick that records the onset of Cenozoic glaciation, and the history of Antarctic glaciation over the past 34 Myr. This succession is relevant both to investigations of modern climate change and to studies of long-term palaeoclimate change in general. This study provides a sedimentological and stratigraphic review of the Victoria Land Basin succession, based on analysis of several continuous drillcores acquired since the 1970s, and supported by seismic stratigraphic analysis of a large array of seismic reflection data. An array of fifteen lithofacies is recognized within the Victoria Land Basin Cenozoic succession, including fossiliferous and diversely bioturbated mudrocks and diatomites, texturally mature sandstones and conglomerates, mixed mudstones and sandstones with dispersed gravel with restricted bioturbation, and diamictites and associated lithologies. These facies record a variety of marine, glaciomarine, proglacial and subglacial environments. Locally, volcanic and volcaniclastic deposits are interbedded in the succession. Lithofacies are arranged in repetitive vertical stacking patterns (depositional sequences) that record glacial advance-retreat cycles with attendant relative sea-level changes. Seven varieties of depositional sequences (stratigraphic motifs) are recognized within the succession as a whole, and interpreted to record a range of depositional settings from rifts unaffected by glacial ice (Motif 7), through varying degrees of glacial influence with abundant meltwater contributions (Motifs 6 to 3), to cold, polar glaciated environments such as that of today (Motifs 2 and 1). Overall, there is a gradual trend upward through the succession from Motif 7 at the base towards Motif 1 at the top, but the trend is not monotonic. A significant conclusion of this work is that a record of dynamic climate and glacial conditions is preserved through the entire 34 Myr period of the Cenozoic icehouse, at least in the Victoria Land Basin. Intervals characterized by consistent stratigraphic style (motifs) are recognized throughout the Victoria Land Basin succession. These intervals are of 1 to 6 Myr duration, each containing numerous depositional sequences; they are one to two orders of magnitude longer than glacial-interglacial cycles, and record periods during which environmental conditions varied in an internally consistent manner. These intervals are considered to reflect convolutions of orbital parameters that remained stable for periods of 106 a, and then switched to alternative configurations. Such intervals are directly analogous to 1 to 8 Myr intervals characterized by glaciogenic strata that are preserved within the late Palaeozoic of eastern Australia among other areas, and may be a recurring stratigraphic response to icehouse climate regimes through geological time. Abstract: Understanding of Neogene climate in Antarctica has been an intractable problem for over 20 years. Competing models of the effect of Pliocene climatic warmth have not yet been reconciled. New sedimentological and paleontological data from Dry Valley Drilling Project core (DVDP-10) demonstrate a dynamic climate regime for the early and mid-Pliocene record preserved in the floor of Taylor Valley. This succession of interbedded mudrocks, sandstones, conglomerates and diamictites includes evidence for times when the coastal plain landscape of Taylor Valley may have been vegetated by higher land plants. Biostratigraphic data from DVDP-10 are utilized to correlate to the more detailed and finely resolved record in the AND-1B core in southern McMurdo Sound. Accordingly, the interval in DVDP-10 that records dynamic environmental fluctuations with a possible vegetated coastal plain land system is bracketed at 4.92–4.25Ma. These data suggest that low altitude terrains of the Dry Valleys during the Early Pliocene were subjected to glacial-interglacial cycles in which some interglacials were largely ice-free. Abstract: Integration of data from fully cored stratigraphic holes with an extensive grid of seismic reflection lines in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, has allowed the formulation of a new model for the evolution of the Cenozoic Victoria Land Basin of the West Antarctic Rift. The Early Rift phase (Eocene to Early Oligocene) is recorded by wedges of strata confined by early extensional faults, and which contain seismic facies consistent with drainage via coarse-grained fans and deltas into discrete, actively subsiding grabens and half-grabens. The Main Rift phase (Early Oligocene to Early Miocene) is represented by a lens of strata that thickens symmetrically from the basin margins into a central depocenter, and in which stratal events pass continuously over the top of the Early Rift extensional topography. Internal seismic facies and lithofacies indicate a more organized, cyclical shallow marine succession, influenced increasingly upward by cycles of glacial advance and retreat into the basin. The Passive Thermal Subsidence phase (Early Middle Miocene) is recorded by an evenly distributed sheet of strata that thickens somewhat into the depocentre but is continuous across and over the earlier rift strata to the margins of the basin. Internally, it contains similar facies to the underlying Main Rift, but preserves more evidence for clinoform sets and large channels, and in core comprises many short, condensed and strongly top-truncated stratal cycles with continued, periodic glacial influence. These patterns are interpreted to record accumulation under similar environmental conditions but in a regime of slower subsidence. The Renewed Rifting phase (Middle Miocene to Recent, largely unsampled by coring thus far) is represented by intervals that thicken significantly into the basin depocentre and that are complicated by evidence of magmatic activity (McMurdo Volcanic Group). This succession is further divided into lower and upper intervals, separated by a major unconformity that displays increasing angular discordance towards the western basin margin and Transantarctic Mountain Front. The youngest part of the stratigraphy was accumulated under the influence of flexural loading imposed by the construction of large volcanic edifices, and was formed in an environment in which little sediment was supplied from the western basin margin, suggesting a change in environmental (glacial) conditions at possibly c. 2 Ma. The Cenozoic stratigraphy of the southern Victoria Land Basin preserves archives of both climate change and the complex rift history of the basin, and coincidences between key stratal surfaces in seismic data and evidence for environmental change in drillcores suggest that tectonic and climatic drivers may be causally linked. Cryogenic-brine precipitated carbonates (cryogenic-brine carbonates) have proven to be a valuable proxy for tracing the origin, nature, and distribution of Cenozoic brines that reside beneath McMurdo Sound (MMS) and adjacent McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV), Antarctica. Of particular significance is the predominance of cryogenic-brine aragonite cements found in several stratigraphic sections in this region, reflecting the initial chemistry and conditions under which the brines formed. To fully explore this aspect, this paper presents a comprehensive examination of cryogenic-brine aragonite cements in all sediment cores recovered in New Harbor, an embayment that connects the MDV and MMS. Petrographic and isotopic analyses of the cements reveal a diverse range of brine-forming environments in the glacial outlet system during the middle Miocene Climatic Transition and the Early–Middle Pleistocene Transition. These environments span subglacial and ice-contact proglacial lakes to sub-ice-shelf fjords, occurring as cold-based, continent-sized Antarctic ice sheets expanded over the continental margin. Subsurface infiltration of the brines triggered almost instantaneous precipitation of aragonite cements below the sediment-water interface at low temperatures near 0 °C. Driven by the hydraulic gradient, the brines facilitated slow yet pervasive precipitation of an unusual form of aragonite characterized by coarse, blocky and poikilotopic morphologies—distinct from the typical acicular and fibrous aragonite dominating near-surface strata. The oxygen isotopic compositions of brines, as derived from aragonite precipitates, vary among different environments, displaying an increasing trend from ∼ –30 to –5 ‰ VSMOW toward MMS. The 18O depletion is primarily controlled by the availability of periodic saline water replenishment and the relative contribution of seawater versus meltwater during the cryoconcentration process. The ubiquity of brine-forming environments on the Antarctic continental margin suggests their potential existence during past ice ages, which may be identified by the presence of distinct cryogenic-aragonite cement patterns as documented in this study. Briny groundwater is present below the extremely cold and dry surface of the McMurdo Dry Valleys and below the seafloor of the adjacent McMurdo Sound in Antarctica. The lack of reliable groundwater samples in the region, however, has long limited understanding of its origin, nature, and spatial distribution. In this regard, intergranular carbonate cements, widespread in subsurface Cenozoic strata and recently recognized as brine precipitates, provide an indirect means of solving these issues. This study examines the petrography and isotope geochemistry of intergranular aragonite cement phases that occur in subsurface Pliocene-Quaternary sedimentary sections that formed in the lower Taylor Valley (cores DVDP-10, -11) and in offshore McMurdo Sound (core AND-1B). Aragonite cement in the coastal Taylor Valley sections is characterized by very low δ18O values (−26.9 to −19.4‰ VPDB) compared to values in the offshore section (−12.5 to −2.7‰ VPDB). These differences are interpreted to reflect two settings for cryogenic brine formation, which produced isotopically distinct brines during Quaternary glaciation. In the coastal region, seawater-meltwater mixtures were isolated and cryogenically concentrated in an ice-dammed lake setting that formed in response to the expansion of the East and West Antarctic Ice Sheets into the lower Taylor Valley. In McMurdo Sound, cryogenic concentration of seawater occurred in a semi-isolated flexural trough that was deepened by lithospheric depression of volcanic edifices and the expanded West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Aragonite cement phases serve as excellent proxies for tracing the extents of subsurface brine bodies along the continental margin of Antarctica. Given the propensity for cryogenic brine formation in glaciomarine settings, the likelihood of brine cements in rock records from other analogous high-latitude, cold settings must not be overlooked. Brine formed through the cryogenic concentration of seawater remains one of the least understood components of Earth's cryosphere. Cryogenic brine is a prominent feature of the McMurdo region of Antarctica, where it has been documented below the Taylor Glacier, in numerous ice-covered lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, and in an extensive, seaward-flowing groundwater system in the Taylor Valley. A much larger and less studied body of brine exists offshore in the McMurdo Sound subsurface, where it saturates the pore space and has precipitated intergranular cement in Cenozoic glaciomarine strata deep within the Victoria Land Basin. This review examines the nature and distribution of brine in the McMurdo region to assess its volume, genesis, and significance. Constraints on subsurface fluid migration are considered in the context of available data. Geochemical data indicate that the brine is the product of seawater freezing, with water-rock interaction and evaporation, especially in the McMurdo Dry Valleys where brines stayed close to the surface, leading to further compositional modification. The volume of brine in the region is currently estimated at 27,000 km3. However, accounting for the widespread distribution of brine-precipitated carbonate cement requires that a much larger volume of brine moved through the subsurface in the past. Brine geochemistry is consistent with a genetic relationship between brine in the Taylor Valley and offshore in the subsurface of the Victoria Land Basin. Chronostratigraphic constraints point toward episodic, rather than continuous brine formation. A proposed scenario involves flooding of the McMurdo Dry Valleys during Neogene periods of relative warmth to form fjord-like systems, which were then cut off during subsequent cooling and ice sheet growth. Isolated bodies of seawater were concentrated via freezing to form brine, which percolated into the subsurface and flowed seaward. Among the enduring features that may record the presence of brine in the geologic record, brine-precipitated cement phases hold the most promise for preservation on Earth as well as on Mars.
